The Middle East in Focus

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

1. 3 Israelis said killed, at least 11 others hurt in Istanbul bombing - Times of Israel

Turkish officials said three Israelis were among the five people killed in a suicide bombing that rocked a main pedestrian thoroughfare in the heart of Istanbul on Saturday. At least 11 Israelis were among the 36 injured in the explosion.

Turkish authorities identified another of the people killed as an Iranian national.

Israeli officials named one fatality as Dimona-native Simha Damri, 60, who was in Istanbul as part of a culinary tour with her husband Avi, who was also injured in the attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that two Israelis had been killed and said it was possible there was a third Israeli fatality. (Read more)

2. The culinary tour that ended in disaster - YNET News

Three Israelis were murdered and 11 others wounded in the Istanbul suicide bombing on Saturday morning - Avraham Goldman, 69, from Herzliya; Yonatan Suher, 40, from Tel Aviv; and Simcha Damri, 60, from Dimona.

Simcha Damri and her husband Avi, who was moderately wounded in the attack, were on a culinary tour to experience the tastes of Turkey when ISIS terrorist Mehmet Ozturk blew up himself near their tour group.

The group had breakfast on Saturday morning and began to walk down the popular pedestrian boulevard of Istiklal Street. "I saw a store that had 'XOXO' written on it; I wanted to take a picture of it to send to my daughter in Israel," Avi recounted. He hung back from the group, intending to message 24-year-old Adi a message of kisses and hugs.

"Suddenly, I heard a terrible explosion, and everything was flying. I couldn't see my wife," he said.(Read more)

- Abba Father, we pray for all affected by this terrorist attack. We pray for comfort for the survivors and families left behind. We ask that You surround them with Your presence and fill them with Your peace. We ask that You touch those who are wounded and bring them quick and complete healing. We pray that You deliver them from any spirit of trauma. We ask these things in the name of Yeshua, amen.

3. Breaking the Silence receives most of its funding from Europe - Israel National News

NGO Monitor, a watchdog which tracks extremist anti-Israel NGOs, on Friday revealed that the leftist organization Breaking the Silence received 78% of its budget between 2012 and 2015 from European governments, including Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, and the EU.

Additional amounts came from the New Israel Fund, NGO Monitor revealed. During those years, Breaking the Silence's budget amounted to some 6.8 million shekels, or $1.8 million. The revelation comes in the wake of the investigative report on Breaking the Silence which aired on Channel 2 on Thursday and found that the group has apparently been collecting sensitive information on IDF methods and equipment.

"Major donations from European governments have enabled the members of Breaking the Silence to implement their radical agenda, including obtaining potentially classified information with no connection to ethics or human rights," Professor Gerald Steinberg of NGO Monitor said in a statement Friday.

"All of Breaking the Silence's activities, including false campaigns regarding alleged war crimes and revelations regarding potential espionage, are enabled by the financial support of foreign governments. The latest revelations highlight the need for European governments to implement vital transparency and oversight, without the excuses offered in the past, and adopt strict guidelines regarding secret funding processes for political NGOs that do so much damage in the Arab-Israeli context," added Steinberg. (Read more)

- Father, we ask that You stop the funneling of money from these countries to the Breaking the Silence organization or any other organization that seeks to do harm to Israel. We pray in the name of Yeshua, amen.

4. After declaring autonomy, Syrian Kurds 'open to ties with Israel' - Times of Israel

After the main Syrian Kurdish group officially declared areas under its control in northern Syria a federalized autonomous region this week, the Syrian regime and opposition, as well as Turkey, immediately rejected the declaration.

The group was also not given a seat at the table of peace negotiations taking place in Geneva.

Despite not being recognized, the Syrian Kurds have fully governed their region for two years. Their governance has been overwhelmingly democratic, egalitarian and secular in a region where totalitarian and Islamist ideologies prevail. (Read more)

- Father God, we ask that You send angels to bring peace and protection to the Syrian Kurds. We ask that a bond of friendship, trust and alliance form between them and Israel. In the name of Yeshua, amen.

5. Report: Iranian Commander Assures Hamas Tehran Will Never Cease Fighting Against Israel; Says Nuclear Deal Changed Nothing - Algemeiner

Iran has been making serious attempts to restore relations with Hamas, the Hebrew news site Walla reported on Thursday.

According to the report - based on an interview an anonymous Hamas source gave to the Lebanon-based pan-Arab news outlet Al-Mayadeen - Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds force, met with a Hamas delegation in Tehran last month, during the anniversary celebrations of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, to try to mend soured relations.

The source quoted conversations between Soleimani and top Hamas representative in Lebanon Osama Hamdan and Hamas politburo members Mohammad Nasser and Maher Obeid.

"The world has changed since the Arab Spring," Suleimani reportedly said during the meeting. "Neither Iran nor Hamas is as it was before. But Hamas and Iran have the desire for a strong uprising in Palestine and confrontation against Israeli aggression. It is imperative to create a new basis for our relations. Over the past few years, many mistakes were made, some on the part of Hamas and some on Iran's part. Nevertheless, we both know that the resistance is in danger, and we know that the only country that can support Palestinian resistance is Iran." (Read more)

- Abba, the warnings of Prime Minister Netanyahu have fallen on the deaf ears of the world. We ask that You would take the scales off of the eyes of world leaders so they might see the real heart of the Iranian Regime. They have never hidden their hate for Israel or America! We pray that You protect Israel against all plans of terrorism from any nation. In the name of Yeshua, amen.

6. Jordan: Video cameras to be up 'in days' at Jerusalem shrine - Fox News

AMMAN, Jordan - A government spokesman says Jordan will install cameras "within days" at a tense Jerusalem shrine revered by Muslims and Jews.

The surveillance was to have been set up months ago to lower friction that has contributed to ongoing Israeli-Palestinian violence. Disagreement between Jordan and Israel over what the cameras can show apparently contributed to the delays.

Israel wants cameras installed everywhere in the compound, including in two mosques, to document alleged hoarding of stones by Palestinians for clashes with Israeli troops. Jordan, custodian of the shrine, only wants cameras in open areas to show alleged violations by Israeli security forces. (Read more)

-- Father, we ask that You move on the government and King of Jordan and cause them to also want to have more cameras installed. We pray that they would desire more visibility and earnestly want the cameras for people's protection. We pray that this not just be a move for appearances, but that they really desire an increase in safety. In the name of Yeshua, amen.

The Daily Brief

1. McConnell Repeats: Senate Will Not Vote on Another Obama Nominee to Supreme Court - CNSNews.com

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said on NBC's "Meet the Press" today that he would not be holding a Senate vote on President Barack Obama's nomination to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Obama this week nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Garland currently serves on U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

McConnell indicated on "Meet the Press" that he would hold no vote on a Supreme Court nomination during the regular session of the Senate before this November's elections and that he would hold no vote on a Supreme Court nominatoin during a lame-duck session held after the election and before the new Congress and new president are sworn into office next January. (Read more)

- Father, we thank You that the Republican leadership in the U.S. Senate is holding the line on refusing to hold hearings on any nominees for Supreme Court justice this year. Bless them, Lord, in Jesus' name, amen.

- "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged . . ." (Joshua 1:9)

2. Little Sisters of the Poor At The Supreme Court - Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation

This Wednesday, The Little Sisters of the Poor will appear in front of the Supreme Court to fight for religious freedom.

There is an easy solution that protects the Little Sisters' religious freedom and the right of the government to offer these services to women who want them. Rather than trying to force religious plans to offer these services, the better solution is for the government to provide these services through the ACA healthcare exchange to any employees who want them but can't get them through employer plans.

The Little Sisters are not trying to prevent the government from providing these services, but object to the government's insisting the Little Sisters provide them (especially since the government has already refused to ensure that those free services are provided to one in three Americans). Giving all women access to contraception through the healthcare exchange is a simpler and fairer way for the government to provide these services to more women while protecting the religious freedom of the Little Sisters, who never wanted this fight and just want to get back to caring for the elderly in need. (Read more)

- Father God, once again we lift up the eight justices of the U.S. Supreme Court before You, who rules in the High Court of heaven. Abba Father, we ask for a ruling in this case that is according to Your will and for the blessing of this charitable organization. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the saints!"
(Rev. 15:3,4)

3. Christian Grandmother Fined for Refusing Gay Wedding Floral Order Given Hope as Case Elevated to Higher Court - Christian Post

A Southern Baptist grandmother and florist fined fore refusing an order for a gay wedding has been given new hope after the Washington Supreme Court agreed to hear her religious freedom case.

Barronelle Stutzman, owner of Arlene's Flowers in Richland, was told she must pay a fine for turning down an order in 2013 to design custom floral arrangements for a same-sex marriage ceremony, despite her argument that her religious faith prevents her from doing so.

"Barronelle and many others like her around the country have been willing to serve any and all customers, but they are understandably not willing to promote any and all messages," said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner.

"We hope the Washington Supreme Court will affirm the broad protections that both the U.S. Constitution and the Washington Constitution afford to freedom of speech and conscience." (Read more)

- Lord God, we plead for justice in this case. Praise God for the courage of this sweet sister for standing up for the convictions of her faith, even in the midst of afflictions and threats. Thank You, Jesus! Amen.

- "And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off?" (Luke 18:7)

4. Nun Gives Eyewitness Account of Islamic State's Murder of 4 Missionaries of Charity in Yemen - CNSNews.com

The sole survivor of an attack by Islamic State terrorists on the Missionaries of Charity home in Yemen earlier this month, Sister Sally, recounted the treatment of her fellow sisters at the hands of the militants who "tied them up, shot them in the head and smashed their heads," according to the handwritten account obtained by the National Catholic Register.

Sister Sally, the superior of the sisters' community in Yemen, gave her account of the massacre to Sister Rio, and the account was recorded by another Missionary of Charity, Sister Adriana. Copies of the handwritten account were reproduced in full by the National Catholic Register and the Catholic news site, Aleteia.

Sister Adriana wrote, "5 young Ethiopian men (Christian) began running to tell the sisters ISIS was here to kill them. They were killed one by one. They tied them to trees, shot them in the head and smashed their heads." (Read more)

- Father, it is so difficult and even painful for us to read this account, but we cannot hide our eyes from witnessing these atrocities any longer. We ask You comfort the hearts of any survivors, and show Yourself to be MIGHTY on behalf of Your children who are suffering untold agonies in the hands of our enemy. We ask this in Your name, amen and amen.

- "O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongs; O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show yourself." (Psalm 94:1)

5. Obama Tweets from Havana Hours After Dissidents Detained During Weekly Rights Protest - CNSNews.com

President Obama landed in Cuba on Sunday afternoon, hours after dozens of dissidents from the Ladies in White movement were detained during a post-Mass, pro-democracy march, in what has become a weekly ritual of protest and arrest over almost a year. "Obama, traveling to Cuba isn't fun," read a banner carried by the demonstrators. "No to human rights violations."

Any hopes that this week's demonstration, on the eve of Obama's arrival, would be tolerated were quickly put to rest, as police handcuffed and bussed away dozens of the protesting women, and a handful of men. Ladies in White was established more than a decade ago by wives and relatives of political prisoners. (Read more)

- Father, people are still hopeless and discouraged by the denial of the truth that Cuban leadership has not changed. Please encourage their hearts and let them know that intercessors are praying for Truth to reign in their land. Cause them to be courageous as they love their captors and reach out with life in Jesus Christ to others. Cause many to stand strong for what they believe and fill them with Your Word. Help them to encourage one another and sing Praises to You! Intervene and set them free! In Jesus' Name, Amen!

- "Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; And attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon You, For You will answer me." (Psalm 86:6,7)

6. Turkey says Istanbul suicide bomber was member of Islamic State - Reuters

A Turkish member of the Islamic State militant group was responsible for Saturday's suicide bombing in Istanbul that killed three Israelis and an Iranian, Turkey's interior minister said.

The attack in Istiklal Street, Istanbul's most popular shopping district, is the fourth such bombing in Turkey this year and the second one by Islamist militants. In January a suicide bomber blew himself up in Istanbul's historic heart, killing 12 German tourists. NATO-member Turkey is on heightened alert after the bombings, which have killed more than 80 people. A soccer match between Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce and Galatasaray was canceled on Sunday and the stadium evacuated on what appeared to be a security threat.

Interior Minister Efkan Ala identified Saturday's bomber as a man from a southern Turkish province, adding that five people had been detained so far in connection with the blast. 'We have determined that Mehmet Ozturk, born in 1992 in Gaziantep, has carried out the heinous attack on Saturday in Istanbul. It has been established that he is a member of Daesh,' Ala told a news conference broadcast live on television, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State. (Read more)

- Lord, as these jihadists rage across the Middle East, more and more innocent lives are lost. We pray that Your power will stop this evil. Be with the families of the victims, and grant them eyes to see Your Love and ears to hear the whisper of Your Holy Spirit.

"Surely the righteous shall give thanks to Your Name. Let evil hunt the violent man to overthrow him." (Psalm 140:13)

7. Israel warns: Don't travel to Turkey - Israel National News

Israel's government on Sunday warned against travel to Turkey after three of its citizens were murdered in an Istanbul suicide bombing the previous day. The country's anti-terrorism office raised its threat assessment and 'recommends avoiding visits to Turkey,' it said in a statement. 'Yesterday's deadly attack in Istanbul, in which a group of Israeli tourists was hit, underscores the threat against tourist targets throughout Turkey.'

Tens of thousands of Israelis visit nearby Turkey each year despite strained diplomatic relations between the two countries. Besides the three murdered, another ten Israelis were wounded, foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said. (Read more)

- Father, we ask that You protect Your people and all Westerners against this radical Islamic violence. Grant Israelis wisdom at this difficult time.

- "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." (Proverbs 9:10)

8. Paris attacks suspect reported to be planning new acts - CNSNews.com

The top suspect in last year's Paris attacks told investigators after he was captured that he was planning new operations from Brussels and possibly had access to several weapons, Belgium's foreign minister said Sunday. Salah Abdeslam had claimed that "he was ready to restart something from Brussels, and it's maybe the reality," Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said.

Reynders gave credence to the suspect's claim because "we found a lot of weapons, heavy weapons in the first investigations, and we have seen a new network of people around him in Brussels."

Abdeslam, captured Friday in a police raid in Brussels, was charged Saturday with "terrorist murder" by Belgian authorities. He is a top suspect in the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris that left 130 people dead. (Read more)

- Lord, we thank You that Belgian authorities were able to capture Salah Abdeslam. We know he did not work alone - so we pray that EVERY terrorist involved in plots against the West will be thwarted before they are able to do more harm.

"Your fierceness has deceived you, the pride of your heart...though you make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there, says the Lord." (Jeremiah 49:16)

9. Courting Egypt, Hamas removes all signs of Muslim Brotherhood from Gaza - Jerusalem Post

In what appears to be an attempt to detach itself from its mother organization in Egypt, Hamas has removed all signs of the Muslim Brotherhood from the streets and mosques in Gaza. All the pictures and slogans related to the group have been taken down and removed from public view. The London-based Arab daily A-Sharq al-Awsat reported Monday that Hamas' Public Works Department started removing images of senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders, including the image of the movement's founder, Hassan al-Banna, and ousted Egyptian president Mohammad Morsi.

Hamas has also removed a major banner which was hung in central Gaza over the past few years. The banner contained the images of the current and previous emirs of Qatar, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and two of Hamas' senior leaders, Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashaal, with the caption: "Jerusalem waits for the men." In lieu of this belligerent banner, Hamas erected another reading: "The resistance does not direct its weapons to the outside, our compass is directed to Palestine's liberation." With this, Hamas seemingly delivers a placating message to Egypt, according to which it will not intervene in the latter's internal arena.

This move by Hamas comes after Egypt has reportedly demanded that the Palestinian Islamist group cut its ties with the Brotherhood and show no presence in Sinai in exchange for Egypt's opening of the Rafah border crossing and its undertaking not to flood Hamas' tunnels. According to the report, Hamas also decided to remove all Muslim Brotherhood religious slogans from the mosques in the coastal territory. (Read more)

- Lord, appearances are always deceiving, and in the case of Islam, more so . . . for the Moslems only know how to lie. We pray that the Egyptian authorities are not deceived by this maneuver, but instead have their eyes wide open to make policy according to TRUTH. We pray that Egypt will not open the Rafah border crossing. In Your name, amen.

- "Do not be deceived . . ." (Galatians 6:7)

10. UN condemns 'unacceptable' North Korea missile tests - Space Daily

The UN Security Council on Friday strongly condemned North Korea over its ballistic missile launches and demanded Pyongyang to refrain from further violations of UN resolutions. Backed by China, Pyongyang's ally, the council said in a unanimous statement that 'all these launches were unacceptable' and 'constituted a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions.'

The statement was adopted during a closed-door meeting called by the United States after North Korea test-fired two medium-range ballistic missiles, the latest in a string of provocative acts from the reclusive regime. Council members 'strongly condemned and expressed grave concern at the ballistic missile launches' and declared that North Korea 'shall refrain from further actions in violation' of UN resolutions. (Read more)

- Father, we again pray that You will remove Kim Jong-Un from power in that nation, and grant North Korea the ability to repent and be changed.

- "To do evil is like sport to a fool." (Proverbs 10:23a)

Let us remember communism

As the occupant of the Oval Office begins his historical trip to Cuba, let us remember communism. Fidel Castro and his brother Raul were part of the Soviet Union's expansion into the Western Hemisphere. In October 1962, many of us in America were huddled around our little black and white televisions watching the news, hoping and praying that President John F. Kennedy was able to prevent Soviet leader Nikita Krushchev from nuking us from Cuba. Krushchev, the Castro brothers, and Che Guevara had made Cuba the staging ground for communist expansion. Now we have a "president" who is embracing their legacy by breaking protocol and taking a nostalgic visit to the West's communist homeland.

In his controversial book "The New Persecuted, Inquiries into Anti-Christian Intolerance in the New Century of Martyrs" written in 2001, Antonio Socci wrote that 45 million Christians were martyred in the last century--mostly at the hands of communist and Islamic regimes. From 1900 to 1999, over 100 million deaths occurred because of communism. The Miami Herald reported on April 23, 2006 that Fidel Castro was responsible for 31,173 executions and prison deaths since he took power in 1959. Some 5,728 were killed by firing squads. He refused medical attention to those trying to escape the island by boat, resulting in another estimated 77,000 deaths. Nearly all the sources indicate an exact number of deaths caused by Castro's regime is unattainable, with some estimating the death toll over 1.5 million.

This is the regime the US "president" is honoring by his trip to Cuba. The same regime that endorsed his 2012 presidential re-election bid through the voice of Mariela Castro, Raul's then 50 year old daughter. On June 4, 2012, she said, "As a citizen of the world, I would like him to win...I believe that [sic the "president"] is a fair man, and [sic the "president"] needs greater support to be able to take this decision. If [sic the "president"] counted on the full support of the American people, then we could normalize our relationship and have better relations than what we had under President Carter." Carter had lifted all restrictions on US travel to Cuba during his presidency. This "president" tops that with a state visit.

The Communist Manifesto states: "...Communism abolishes eternal truths, it abolishes all religion, and all morality, instead of constituting them on a new basis." This is the basis for all socialism and progressivism as well. It is godless and evil. The Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, 22, "Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil." 2 Timothy 3:13 says, "Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived." There is great deception in the vain words of socialists and communists. They ply the nature of humans with powerful words like "rights" when, in reality, they wish to kill, steal and destroy. Let us remember communism and those who run to it.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Classic Hymns

Songs Our Grandmothers Sang:

MY ANCHOR HOLDS

"An anchor for the soul, firm and secure." (Hebrews 6:19)

Lyrics

Though the angry surges roll On my tempest driven soul, I am peaceful, for I know, Wildly though the winds may blow, I've an anchor safe and sure, That can evermore endure.

Refrain

And it holds, my anchor holds:
Blow your wildest, then, O gale,
On my bark so small and frail;
By His grace I shall not fail,
For my anchor holds, my anchor holds.

Mighty tides about me sweep, Perils lurk within the deep, Angry clouds o'ershade the sky, And the tempest rises high; Still I stand the tempest's shock, For my anchor grips the rock.

Refrain

I can feel the anchor fast As I meet each sudden blast, And the cable, though unseen, Bears the heavy strain between; Through the storm I safely ride, Till the turning of the tide.

Refrain

Troubles almost 'whelm the soul; Griefs like billows o'er me roll; Tempters seek to lure astray; Storms obscure the light of day: But in Christ I can be bold, I've an anchor that shall hold.

Refrain

Signs and Wonders

A 'Tail' of Two Comets

Two comets that will safely fly past Earth later this month may have more in common than their intriguingly similar orbits. They may be twins of a sort.

Comet P/2016 BA14 was discovered on Jan. 22, 2016, by the University of Hawaii's PanSTARRS telescope on Haleakala, on the island of Maui. It was initially thought to be an asteroid, but follow-up observations by a University of Maryland and Lowell Observatory team with the Discovery Channel Telescope showed a faint tail, revealing that the discovery was, in fact, a comet.

The orbit of this newly discovered comet, however, held yet another surprise. Comet P/2016 BA14 follows an unusually similar orbit to that of comet 252P/LINEAR, which was discovered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) survey on April 7, 2000.

The apparent coincidence may be an indication of twin nature in that comet. P/2016 BA14 is roughly half the size of comet 252P/LINEAR and might be a fragment that calved off sometime in the larger comet's past.

"Comet P/2016 BA14 is possibly a fragment of 252P/LINEAR. The two could be related because their orbits are so remarkably similar," said Paul Chodas, manager of NASA's Center of NEO Studies (CNEOS) at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

"We know comets are relatively fragile things, as in 1993 when comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered and its pieces linked to a flyby of Jupiter. Perhaps during a previous pass through the inner-solar system, or during a distant flyby of Jupiter, a chunk that we now know of as BA14 might have broken off of 252P."

Observations made by the Hubble Space Telescope of comet 252P/LINEAR, and by NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility of comet P/2016 BA14 will further investigate their possible twin nature. (Space Daily) Read more here.

"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea." (Luke 21:25)
