The Daily Brief

1. Obama to nominate Brennan as CIA head - BBC

US President Barack Obama is to nominate John Brennan as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, White House officials have said. If confirmed, Mr Brennan will replace Gen David Petraeus, who resigned last year after admitting to an affair. Chuck Hagel is to be put forward as the president's next defence secretary, replacing Leon Panetta.

- Lord, we pray for the leaders in Congress to have Godly wisdom and discernment in regards to confirming these two nominations. We pray for your guidance in these important appointments. May the new leaders discern the times and make correct judgments. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

- He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful; and a wise man's heart discerns both time and judgment. (Ecclesiastes 8:5)

2. Tax Code May Be the Most Progressive Since 1979 - CNBC

With 2013 bringing tax increases on the incomes of a small sliver of the richest Americans, the country's top earners now face a heavier tax burden than at any time since Jimmy Carter was president.

- Lord, what is "progressive" to man may not be progressive in Your sight. Lord, we have prayed and continue to pray for provision for our country. Lord, we pray our country will progress in Your kingdom and Your ways. We pray that tax decisions will be fair and just and for financial burdens to be lifted. May there be repentance for using taxes wrongly. In the name of Jesus, our Provider, we pray. Amen.

- And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' (Luke 18:13)

3. Abyss of debt still threatens America even though fiscal cliff has been avoided - UK Telegraph

If the infamous fiscal cliff in America was averted, why is no one celebrating? Because the abyss below just got deeper.

- Lord, the Abyss is threatening America in so many ways. We have fiscal debts and spiritual debts. Lord, forgive us and deliver us from evil. In the name of Jesus, our Salvation, and Deliverer we pray. Amen.

- Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us, and do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. (Luke 11:3-4)

4. Flu infections sweep America hospitalizing thousands and leaving 18 children dead of complications, and it's going to get worse - Daily Mail UK

The U.S. has been hit with a particularly aggressive early flu season this year with widespread reports of the illness across the country, hospitalizing 2,257 people and leaving 18 children dead before the end of 2012. And health officials say the numbers haven't even peaked yet.

- Lord, we pray for a healing of this flu disease. We pray that You would show people how to prevent and be cured of this disease. In the name of Jesus, our Healer we pray. Amen.

- Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits; Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases. (Psalm 103: 2-3)

5. Controlled Chaos And The Battle For The Human Mind - Personal Liberty

The psychopathic political elites use controlled chaos to advance their agenda of continued theft of wealth and liberties and gradual march to one world government. The recent "fiscal cliff" negotiations are a perfect example of this controlled chaos. Their chaos is the result of ongoing manufactured crises, one piled upon the other. Political elites love for the public to be whipped into a state of frenzy over thoughts of impending doom.

- Lord, the Holy Bible says Satan is the author of confusion. This chaos and confusion is a big prayer request. We are praying that the Prince of Peace take control. May Your kingdom come and Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Let spirits of chaos, confusion, and division be bound by the authority of the blood of Jesus, and in the name of Jesus. Amen.

- For God is not the author of confusion but of peace. (1 Corinthians 14:33)

Government critics say they remain skeptical that the government will improve rights standards within the justice system, following an official announcement yesterday that labor camps would be overhauled.

State media quoted Meng Jianzhu, secretary of the Central Politics and Law Commission, saying that China would end the practice of sending people to labor camps, a policy which denies alleged offenders a trial. (UCA News) Read more.

3. CUBA: Dramatic increase in religious freedom violations in 2012

CSW documented a dramatic increase in violations of freedom of religion or belief in Cuba in 2012.

CSW has called on the Cuban leader, Raul Castro, to ensure that significant improvements are made in upholding religious freedom in 2013 after recording a dramatic increase in violations across the country as the government cracked down on religious organisations and individuals.

Church leaders in different parts of the country reported ongoing violations in the final weeks of the year. An unregistered Protestant church affiliated with the Apostolic Movement in Camaguey was threatened with demolition on 29 December. The following day, nine women affiliated with the Ladies in White movement in Holguin were arrested in the early hours of the morning and held in prison until Sunday morning Mass had ended. The Daily Jot:

Mocking God

The communist dictator "president" of Venezuela Hugo Chavez is dying of cancer. Aside from his alliance with Israel-hating Iran, Chavez has been one of the most outspoken critics of America. Notwithstanding, the occupant of the Oval office has congratulated him on his fixed democratic "wins" and has rubbed elbows with Chavez at various gatherings of world leaders. Chavez has praised the US president on occasion. They are comrades in the socialist rebellion. The UK Telegraph reports that the man who six years ago at the beginning of his third term raised his right hand and proclaimed, "Fatherland, socialism or death . . . I swear by Christ, the greatest socialist in history." He now is near death.

Galatians 6:7 says, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." Chavez may well be a not-to-be-living-to-much-longer example of what happens when you mock YHVH. There are a lot of people in the world who claim to be Christians and that Yeshua Jesus was a socialist. Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega, another "elected" socialist, is one. The US president's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, is yet another. Socialists often claim Christianity as socialism based on Acts 4:32, "And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common."
The difference here is that the early disciples of Christ in Acts voluntarily out of the love of their hearts gave one to another. In Socialism and Communism, government becomes god and distribution of personal property by the state is compulsory. Chapter II. Proletarians and Communists of the Communist Manifesto says, "But Communism abolishes eternal truths, it abolishes all religion, and all morality, instead of constituting them on a new basis; it therefore acts in contradiction to all past historical experience." The idea of invoking Jesus Christ or YHVH God in support of the socialist cause given the truth of its manifesto, is no less than mocking YHVH God.
Communists invoke God in order to manipulate Christians into believing that Jesus was a socialist and therefore it is a good deed to accept the government as an instrument of God. In a sense, there are many ministries that do the same, only they do not have the authority to force Christians to give up their property for their cause--they just ply on emotions to do so. I remember years ago some preacher claiming that Hugo Chavez had made a commitment to Christ. Knowing Chavez by his fruits, I do not believe that he did. He has mocked YHVH. He has manipulated the hearts of people into believing a socialist lie. He has profited from the ernest hands of the poor. Who else has such leaders like Chavez?
Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Pro-Life News

First pro-life bill introduced in 113th Congress

Friday, January 4th was the first full day of the 113th Congress, and with it came the first of hopefully many new pro-life bills. Wasting no time, Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) introduced the "Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act" which would stop the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from providing federal family planning assistance under Title X to abortion businesses until they certify they won't provide and refer for abortions. This bill is similar to previous legislation introduced in the 112th Congress by former representative Mike Pence who has since gone on to become Governor-elect of Indiana.

"Congressman Pence has been a champion in the fight to protect innocent human life and I hope to continue his leadership in the House," Blackburn said. "As a woman, I believe America deserves better than abortion. America shouldn't celebrate abortion and our taxpayers shouldn't subsidize abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood, who profit from the destruction of human life with taxpayer money. It's fiscally irresponsible and morally indefensible."
Planned Parenthood and pro-abortion advocates have taken to the social media airwaves griping about the introduction of the bill, but their factiousness belies a genuine fear. They say, "2013 is starting to look a lot like 2011." By that they are referring to this shocking little graph.
In 2011, the greatest number of pro-life laws were passed, and 2012 brought the second greatest number. Make no mistake-the abortion industry and her allies are reeling on their heels in spite of the passage of ObamaCare and the re-election of the most pro-abortion President ever. Notice in the graph that recent election years typically see a decrease in pro-life legislation (presumably to avoid controversy), but not so in 2010. The number actually went up in that election year showing wildly positive gains since 2008. The bottom line is that the pro-life movement isn't going to quit until it wins. . .
Take this post and share it with as many people as possible. Take it upon yourself to mobilize prayer for pro-life legislation. Let's agree together in prayer and press in for even more pro-life laws in the 113th Congress as well as throughout the state legislatures. Investigate and cover in prayer your elected officials who potentially may introduce new legislation like Blackburn. The pressure and opposition is great, but I believe God is raising up prophetic voices in Congress and the states to do just that.

Joel Rosenberg: The Hagel Nomination

President appoints Hagel to be Secretary of Defense:

Here's why it's a terrible choice that will send wrong message to Iran

by Joel C. Rosenberg

The President has nominated fmr Sen. Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. President Obama on Monday nominated former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense. It's a terrible choice and will send the wrong message at precisely the wrong time to Iran, Hamas and Radical Islamic enemies of the U.S. and Israel in the Middle East.

Interestingly, the Washington Post editorial page has come out strongly against Hagel. So have significant number of liberal Democrats. At least ten Democrat Senators are considering voting against his nomination, largely due to his weak and ineffectual approach to dealing with the mullahs in Iran who are steadily pursuing nuclear weapons.

1. "Mr. Hagel has long been an opponent of unilateral American sanctions against Iran - among other American adversaries - viewing them as counterproductive," notes the New York Times. "Notably, he was one of only two senators to vote against the Iran-Libya sanctions act in 2001, arguing that it would undercut efforts to engage with Tehran."
- New York Times

2. The editors of the Washington Post have come out strongly against the Senate confirming Hagel. "Mr. Hagel's stated positions on critical issues, ranging from defense spending to Iran, fall well to the left of those pursued by Mr. Obama during his first term - and place him near the fringe of the Senate that would be asked to confirm him," notes a Post editorial headlined, "Chuck Hagel is not the right choice for defense secretary."

Noted the Post: "Hagel repeatedly voted against sanctions, opposing even those aimed at the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, which at the time was orchestrating devastating bomb attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq. Mr. Hagel argued that direct negotiations, rather than sanctions, were the best means to alter Iran's behavior. The Obama administration offered diplomacy but has turned to tough sanctions as the only way to compel Iran to negotiate seriously."

Also: "Mr. Obama has said that his policy is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and that containment is not an option. Mr. Hagel has taken a different view, writing in a 2008 book that 'the genie of nuclear weapons is already out of the bottle, no matter what Iran does.'

The former senator from Nebraska signed on to an op-ed in The Post this September that endorsed 'keeping all options on the table' for stopping Iran's nuclear program. But Mr. Hagel has elsewhere expressed strong skepticism about the use of force."
-- Washington Post

3. "NBC political director Chuck Todd said Monday there is a 'soft count' of 10 Senate Democrats who might oppose Chuck Hagel's nomination to head the Department of Defense," reports Politico.

Update: Taxes

Democrats Demand More Of Your Money

If you thought Democrats would be satisfied with the $600 billion in tax hikes they got in the fiscal cliff deal, think again. The Hill reports today that Democrats are demanding at least $1 trillion more in higher taxes now!

Why? Simply because they believe you are undertaxed. On CNN yesterday, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said, "I can tell you that there are still deductions, credits, special treatments under the tax code which ought to be looked at very carefully. I think we need to open our minds on tax revenue." What Durbin really wants to open is your wallet!

Stephen Moore has a very revealing column in yesterday's Wall Street Journal. Moore interviewed Speaker John Boehner about his lessons from the fiscal cliff negotiations with Barack Obama. Boehner repeatedly tried to explain to the president that we have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. Moore wrote:

"[Boehner] repeated this message so often, he says, that toward the end of the negotiations, the president became irritated and said: 'I'm getting tired of hearing you say that.'"

I don't know if Boehner was surprised by this presidential retort. If he was, he should not have been. Obama sees no problem, moral or otherwise, with piling mountains of debt on our children and grandchildren. Steel yourselves, my friends. It's going to be a rough ride. (Gary Bauer)

The Good News Corner

The Good News Corner:

Billy Graham's Prayer for the New Year

Our Father and our God, as we stand at the beginning of this new year we confess our need of Your presence and Your guidance as we face the future.

We each have our hopes and expectations for the year that is ahead of us-but You alone know what it holds for us, and only You can give us the strength and the wisdom we will need to meet its challenges. So help us to humbly put our hands into Your hand, and to trust You and to seek Your will for our lives during this coming year.

In the midst of life's uncertainties in the days ahead, assure us of the certainty of Your unchanging love.

In the midst of life's inevitable disappointments and heartaches, help us to turn to You for the stability and comfort we will need.

In the midst of life's temptations and the pull of our stubborn self-will, help us not to lose our way but to have the courage to do what is right in Your sight, regardless of the cost.

We pray for our nation and its leaders during these difficult times, and for all those who are seeking to bring peace and justice to our dangerous and troubled world. We pray especially for Your protection on all those who serve in our armed forces, and we thank You for their commitment to defend our freedoms, even at the cost of their own lives. Be with their families also, and assure them of Your love and concern for them.
Bring our divided nation together, and give us a greater vision of what You would have us to be. Your Word reminds us that "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord" (Psalm 33:12).
As we look back over this past year we thank You for Your goodness to us-far beyond what we have deserved. May we never presume on Your past goodness or forget all Your mercies to us, but may they instead lead us to repentance, and to a new commitment to make You the foundation and center of our lives this year.
And so, our Father, we thank You for the promise and hope of this new year, and we look forward to it with expectancy and faith. This I ask in the name of our Lord and Savior, who by His death and resurrection has given us hope both for this world and the world to come.

Amen.
