Bush Nominee for Surgeon General Under Fire

For all of liberals' interest in science, their attention to medical risks and consequences is increasingly selective. This tendency is obvious in their pursuit of funds for research that requires the destruction of human embryos. The same is true in their criticism of physicians who speak truthfully about the health risks of homosexuality. President Bush's nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. James Holsinger, has been harshly condemned for a 1991 paper in which he outlined the medical risks posed by homosexual behavior. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) lashed out at the administration for nominating Holsinger, saying, "The [U.S.] Surgeon General's office is no place for bigotry that would trump sound science."

However, "sound science" is on Holsinger's side. The CDC reports that homosexuals make up the single largest category of the more than 600,000 males with AIDS in the United States. Other diseases such as hepatitis, cancer, gonorrhea, and syphilis are increasingly prevalent in the homosexual community. While politicians may be willing to whitewash these medical facts, groups like the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association take the concerns seriously--even going so far as to outline these same health risks on their website. Dr. Holsinger is being vilified not for compromising the facts, but for bringing them to light.

The same can be said of Gen. Peter Pace, who defended the ban on homosexuals in the military. He wasn't nominated to a second term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff because the White House said it would be "contentious." It hardly seems fair we are asking our military to fight on foreign shores when the administration is unwilling to fight for our military leaders on Capitol Hill.

· Praise God for the wisdom of President Bush in choosing Dr. James Holsinger for the position of U.S. Surgeon General. Dr. Holsinger walks in truth -- a commodity much-needed in our government today. Continue to cover him in prayer as he prepares to face hearings this month in the Senate, which must confirm his nomination. Bind the spirit of deception that would seek to gain ground in those hearings; loose wisdom upon the members of the Senate as they weigh the nomination of Dr. James Holsinger for U.S. Surgeon General.
