And my fingers for battle . . ."
(Psalm 144:1)

The Daily Brief

1. UN: South Sudan's Food Crisis 'Worst in the World'- Worthy News

The United Nations called South Sudan's food crisis the 'worst in the world' and urged donor nations who pledged $618 million to make good on their promise.

- Father, we pray those countries who pledged assistance for this food crisis will fulfill their promises, quickly. We speak abundant provision for this food crisis.

- He has given food and provision to those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him; He will remember His covenant forever and imprint it [on His mind]. (Psalm 111: 5)

2. Foreign Policy Conundrum: Qatar Purchased Billions of U.S. Arms - and Supports Hamas - Business Insider

Qatar recently cemented an enormous weapons deal with the United States. But this week, the tiny, resource-rich Gulf kingdom with out-sized geopolitical ambitions -- and a seemingly bottomless pocketbook -- might be setting itself up for more problematic relations with the U.S., Business Insider reported.

- Father, forgive us for selling weaponry to Qatar, who in turn supports Hamas. Forgive us for any ties with countries who would use money and/or weapons against Israel. Provide leaders for the United States who will stand true to Israel in every respect.

- For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice;(Psalm 33:22)

3. U.S. Releases Images Showing Russian Military Firing into Ukraine - USA Today

The United States released a series of satellite images Sunday that appear to support its claims that Russian forces have fired across the border into Ukraine to support rebels there, suggesting a new level of direct Russian involvement in the conflict, USA Today reported.

- Father, we pray wisdom for our leaders on how to respond to this news about Russia. Provide many righteous counselors with solutions to this conflict.

- Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22)

4. Religious Freedom Forfeit in Obama's LGBT Exec Order - Christian Post

President Barack Obama's latest executive order bars employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity among businesses that have federal contracts, according to The Christian Post.

- In the strong name of Jesus, we come against the promoting of something against God's plan for mankind and we come against the abuse of executive orders to promote it. Father, cause the scales to fall off this person's eyes to see Your plan for America and Your plan for him. Please bless us with God-fearing leaders.

- "For you ignore God's law and substitute your own tradition." (Mark 7:8)

5. IRS Promises Atheists It Will Intrude on Churches - Worthy News

The Alliance Defending Freedom has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the Internal Revenue Service for any documents about the IRS having adopted new protocols and procedures for investigating churches.

- We bind up this vile use of the IRS to silence the free speech rights of American churches to speak the Word of God as written. Father, strengthen Your people so that they may stand strong against this unconstitutional intrusion. May the plans of the enemy fall dead to the ground.

- "For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die." (Philippians 1:20)

6. Obama Prepares 'Executive Amnesty' To Millions of Illegal Immigrants - Time

When President Obama issues executive orders on immigration in coming weeks, pro-reform activists are expecting something dramatic: temporary relief from deportation and work authorization for perhaps several million undocumented immigrants. If the activists are right, the sweeping move would upend a contentious policy fight and carry broad political consequences, Time reported.

- Dear Lord, we ask that all plans to bypass the system of checks and balances provided by our Constitution would fall useless to the ground and that there not be a way around Congress for approval of that which is unlawful. Father, we pray for such an outcry of public disapproval against this plan that it would be dropped and tyranny would be stopped. In Jesus' Name, amen!

- "The Lord has sworn by His right hand And by the arm of His strength: 'Surely I will give your grain As food for your enemies; And the sons of the foreigner shall not drink your new wine, for which you have labored.'" (Isaiah 62:8)

7. Rancher: Gov't 'Bullying People' Who Have Been on Lands 'for Generations' - CNSNews.com

Ranchers from Western states told Congress last week that they are routinely threatened and bullied by federal land management officials, including the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service and Fish and Wildlife.

"I sit before you today to let you know what's going on up there, and I hope that we can come to some kind of agreement on what needs to be done and move forward on it, because enough is enough when it comes to bullying people that have been on this land for generations," Michael Lucero, fourth generation rancher in New Mexico, said in his sworn testimony at the hearing of a House Natural Resources subcommittee on "Threat, Intimidation and Bullying by Federal Land Management Agencies, Part II."

Lucero said his family's ranch was first established by a San Diego Land Grant and was eventually designated as land under the jurisdiction of the Forest Service. He claimed the federal government is "driving us completely from the land." (Read more)

- Father God, once again we cry out to You for deliverance from the hand of tyranny under this administration. We stand in the gap on behalf of these landowners, who have owned and managed these ranches for generations. We ask You to cause this government to back down, and to assume its rightful role to help our citizens rather than to harass us. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

- "Let My people go." (Exodus 9:1)

8. Obama: New Sanctions Against Russia Will Have 'An Even Bigger Bite' - ABC News

The United States will unleash a new round of sanctions against Russia in the wake of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, President Obama said today.

"The cost on Russia will continue to grow," the president said in a statement at the White House emphasizing Russian "energy, arms and finance" as targets. "Today is a reminder that the United States means what it says."

Obama said Russia has, so far, "failed to cooperate with the investigations" into the downing of the Malaysian aircraft, adding that he and key European leaders "are united in our view that the situation in Ukraine ought to be resolved diplomatically."

Obama said he has been coordinating closely with European allies to ensure a unified response. Earlier today, the European Union agreed to a new package of sanctions on Russia, for the first time imposing "sectoral" sanctions on Russia's finance and energy industries, as well as banning arms exports to Russia. (Read more)

- In this week that marks the outbreak of World War I, pray that these sanctions will have their desired effect, so that war may be avoided. Pray!

- "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5:16)

OPERATION PROTECTIVE EDGE

This week, for all the headlines cited below, please join us in proclaiming THIS DECREE:

"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of YHWH our God." (Psalm 20:7)

1. Hamas denies ready for 24-hour truce - Jerusalem Post

Military death toll at 53 after 10 soldiers killed Monday; IDF kills senior Islamic Jihad officer and strikes home of Hamas's Haniyeh, amid massive airstrikes; rocket barrage fired at central Israel in wee hours

Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said on Tuesday that Israel needed to leave the current operation in Gaza with a clear victory.

Bennett added that Israel must not just "try its best," but to end Operation Protective edge with a "decisive victory." (Read more)

2. Finance Minister Lapid: Hamas is Holding Gazan Civilians Hostage
- Israel National News

In an interview with Bloomberg TV on Tuesday Finance Minister Yair Lapid said that Hamas is holding the citizens of Gaza "hostage", and that Israel demands nothing less than a demilitarization of the Gaza Strip to force an end to attacks on Israeli civilians.

"No other country on earth" would tolerate thousands of rockets being fired indiscriminately on its civilian population, said the Yesh Atid party leader, who went on to point out that despite that Israel had accepted three separate ceasefire proposals - all of which had been rejected by Hamas.

Lapid also addressed tensions with the White House, after US Secretary of State was roundly criticized in Israel for responding to Hamas's rejection of a truce by working with Hamas's allies to offer an alternative which stunned Israeli observers, as it called on Israel to essentially give in to all of the Islamist group's demands. (Read more)

3. Hamas Spells it Out: Our Aim is the Extermination of the Jews - Israel National News

As the 22nd day of the IDF's Operation Protective Edge in Gaza draws to a close, MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute) has published a video in which a Hamas cleric lays out the organization's "doctrine" in its fight against Israel: genocide.

Speaking in a televised address from Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, the preacher said that Hamas's aim was to "totally exterminate" the Jews living in Israel, because "wherever the Jews lived they spread corruption". (Read more and view the clip here.)

4. In Leaked Tape, Hostile Obama Tries to Force PM to Accept Truce - Israel National News

Damning evidence has emerged of US President Barack Obama's dismissal of Israel's position in favor of supporting the position of Hamas and its allies during ceasefire talks.

A "senior US official" leaked an audio recording of a telephone conversation between Obama and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to Channel One. In it the 35-minute conversation, which took place on Sunday, the US President appears downright hostile at points, and even cuts off Netanyahu in the middle of his protestations over a one-sided truce proposal which would have seen Hamas receive all its key demands, but that Israel ultimately rejected. (Read the transcript here.)

5. Israeli Aircraft Hit Home of Hamas Leader Haniyeh - Israel National News

Israeli aircraft hit the home of Hamas's top leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, inside the Shati region of Gaza on Monday night, his son said. "The Israeli enemy struck our house twice," Abed Salam Haniyeh said in a statement quoted by AFP. The Reuters news agency quoted Gaza's interior ministry as having said that the airstrike caused damage but no casualties. An IDF spokeswoman had no information on the report but was checking for details. (Read more)

6. 10 Israeli soldiers killed in action Monday evening - ICEJ News

Gaza-based terror organizations announced they would initiate a 24-hour cease-fire on Monday morning to mark the Moslem holiday of Id al-Fitr. However, on Monday afternoon, a large barrage of rockets was fired at Israeli cities and four IDF soldiers were killed and many more wounded by a mortar round which landed amidst them at their staging area near the border with the Gaza Strip. Another soldier was killed when an anti-tank missile hit the bulldozer he was manning. In the evening, an attempt by terrorist commandos to infiltrate Kibbutz Nahal Oz through an attack tunnel was broken up by the quick reaction of IDF troops in the area, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers and at least one terrorist. (Read More)

7. Netanyahu warns Israelis to brace for an extended conflict - ICEJ News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday evening that Israelis must prepare themselves for an extended period of war and hardship, following continued rocket fire by Gaza-based terror organizations and a thwarted attempt by terror commandos to infiltrate Kibbutz Nahal Oz in southern Israel using an attack tunnel.

"We will not end the operation in Gaza without neutralizing the terror tunnels," Netanyahu said at a press conference in Tel Aviv. "The action against the tunnels is a first and necessary step to the demilitarization of Gaza. The process of preventing the arming of Gaza, the demilitarization, needs to be part of any solution. And the international community must aggressively demand that."

His comments came amidst a growing chorus from the international community calling for an end to the fighting, regardless of the lingering threats to Israel. (Read More)

8. Israel's friends rally to her defense - ICEJ

The ICEJ Canada Branch helped organize a large rally on the front lawn of the Ontario Parliament Buildings at Queen's Park Toronto Monday, to support Israel in its fight with Gaza-based terror militias.

"The Canadians for Israel Rally was realized by a passionate, strong and solidified grassroots group in Toronto to voice solidarity with Israel, her fight against terrorism (Hamas), with a focus on freedom and democracy that both our countries embrace' said ICEJ Canada National Director Donna Holbrook. She added that the scene featured "a sea of Canadian and Israeli flags and signs that read "Through Fire and Water: Canada Stands with Israel" (from our PM Stephen Harper's speech in Knesset in January this year.)"

Holbrooks own speech at the event focused on why Christians support Israel, including God's eternal promises to this nation, emphasizing the need for our continued support for Israel through our solidarity visits there. (Read More)

9. Hamas -- Not Israel -- Struck Hospital - Gary Bauer

Evidence is growing that the "hit" on the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City this week was not an Israeli bomb but instead a misguided rocket fired by Islamic Jihad. Radar and sensors detected the paths of four rockets fired by Islamic Jihad at the time and Israel has released aerial photographs tracing their paths. The Israeli Defense Forces confirm they did not carry out any strikes in that area.

Of course this information will not stop the Israel-bashers at the U.N. and in the media. In addition, the radical Islamic world will not accept the facts either. From the earliest ages, children raised in radical Islamic cultures are taught that Jews/Israelis are the source of all suffering and must be destroyed.

10. Iranian General Promises End of America and Israel - Gary Bauer

The Daily Caller reports that Iranian Brigadier General Hossein Salami has promised that Iran will seek revenge for the deaths of the Gaza "martyrs." Iran is currently negotiating with the Obama Administration on its "right" to have a nuclear weapons program.

General Salami said, "We are confident that Allah's promise will come true and in the end the Islamic world will be the graveyard of America and the Zionist regime's policies. The flag of Islam will be raised."

I feel confident that General Salami is in for a big disappointment and that the God of Abraham will prevail!

11. Hamas Tunnel Horror - Gary Bauer

With each passing day, Israel is discovering how close Hamas came to striking a terrible and deadly blow. As many as 40 complex, fortified tunnels have been discovered by the Israeli Defense Forces leading from Gaza into Israel. The tunnels, in many cases, extend right into the middle of Israeli communities.

Credible sources in Israel are reporting that Hamas was planning a major attack on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which falls on September 24th this year. Hundreds of Hamas commandos, dressed in IDF uniforms, would have emerged in the middle of the night in dozens of Israeli communities. The chaos and death toll would have been catastrophic.

As the reality of this potential catastrophe sunk in, Israelis have united as never before. They are in no mood to be told by the U.N., "Euroweenies" or the Obama Administration that there must be a ceasefire.

- Lord God in Heaven, we once again come before Your Throne of Grace, praising You for miraculously showing Israel the plans of the enemy before they could take effect. Instead, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, You have once again delivered the Israelis from an attack so horrific, it would have indeed "wiped out" much of that nation. Abba Father God, help each of us who are called to pray for the peace of Jerusalem to NOT LET UP, but to continue pressing in, until victory is in hand. Thank You, Lord, amen and amen and amen. Amen.

- "So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy." (Psalm 106:10)

OPERATION NORMANDY:

Praying over the invasion of illegal immigrants on our southern border

This week please join us in proclaiming THIS DECREE over the headlines below:

"Rescue me and deliver me out of the hand of aliens,
Whose mouth speaks deceit
And whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood."
(Psalm 144:11)

1. Legal Experts: Executive Order on Immigration Tough to Challenge - Newsmax

When President Barack Obama picks up a pen to use his presidential powers on immigration reform, he's likely to have a clear path with little legal leverage for opponents to fight back, Politico reports.

"The court route, I don't see it," former Bush immigration official Jan Ting said of Obama's expected executive action next month. Added UCLA law professor Hiroshi Motomura: "There isn't really anyone who would be in a position to complain."

The president, under fire for his handling of the border crisis and a massive influx of young immigrants from Central America, is expected to create his own vision for immigration as the House refuses to act on reforms. (Read more)

- Whatever plans this "president" has to move his immigration agenda forward by means of executive order cannot "get off the ground" without funding. Contact your own member of Congress and demand that any executive order signed by the president, allowing these immigrants to gain admission to our country, be made null and void though the withholding of funds -- funds that can only be released by an act of Congress. Act, and pray. Amen.

- "Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power . . ." (Psalm 110:3)

2. Sessions: Obama Move on Illegals Would 'Alter Constitutional Framework' - Newsmax

Congress must act immediately to stop President Barack Obama's proposed use of executive power to help millions of illegal immigrants, Sen. Jeff Sessions says.

Sessions, a member of the Senate Budget Committee and the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship, fears that without congressional action, the laws set down by the Founding Fathers will be altered forever.

"It would be if Congress doesn't utilize every power it has, particularly the power of the purse, to stop it. Then it would be an incredible assertion of executive power vis-à-vis Congress," the Alabama Republican said Monday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show." (Read more)

3. Democrat state goes ballistic against illegals - WND

More than 5,000 chant 'Impeach, impeach' in Boston

The protests against illegal immigration flared up in an unusual place this weekend when more than 5,000 people rallied in Boston, Massachusetts, an area that has historically voted for Democrats. Organizers hope the surprisingly large turnout will set the stage for a new wave of protests planned for Saturday in Tennessee and two other states.

It was not only the size of the Boston crowd and its enthusiasm for the issue but it's location in a "blue state" that has organizers of this Saturday's protests excited.

"I think it's a sign of the times, a symptom of the problem we've got going on here. I think it shows this illegal immigration issue goes beyond party politics," said James Neighbors, founder of Overpasses for America and one of the groups organizing the protests.

"This has nothing to do with party politics whatsoever," he said. "This is about the future of America for all Americans regardless of whether liberal or conservative, libertarian, whatever. This is about America, and we're going to be undermined by our own federal government if we don't stop it." (Read more)

4. Feds Ask Massachusetts to House Illegal Immigrants at Unused Shopping Malls - Breitbart

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick (D) said that the Obama administration asked whether his state had facilities to house up to 1,000 illegal immigrant children at military bases or unused shopping malls. (Read more)

5. Bachmann: 'We Saw Border Processing, Not Border Security' - CNSNews.com

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), recently returned from a trip to the Southwest border, says no one is being turned away: "We saw border processing, not border security," Bachmann said in a news release describing her trip to Brownsville, McAllen and Laredo.

"While the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agency performs admirably on a daily basis, their purpose has become people processing -- not stopping foreign nationals from unauthorized entry into the U.S. "Currently, not one person who attempts to come into the country is stopped; instead, they are taken to a processing center before a decision is made if they will be allowed to stay," she added. 6. Obama Mulling Work Permits for Millions of Illegal Aliens - CNSNews.com

White House officials led by Domestic Policy Council Director Cecilia Munoz and White House Counsel Neil Eggleston, along with Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, have been working to chart a plan on executive actions Obama could take, hosting frequent meetings with interest groups and listening to recommendations from immigration advocates, law enforcement officials, religious leaders, Hispanic lawmakers and others.

Advocates and lawmakers who were in separate meetings Friday said that administration officials are weighing a range of options including reforms to the deportation system and ways to grant relief from deportation to targeted populations in the country, likely by expanding Obama's two-year-old directive that granted work permits to certain immigrants brought here illegally as youths. That program, called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, has been extended to more than 500,000 immigrants so far. (Read more)

The Daily Jot

White House offended over Israeli criticism--Wow!

AP says the White House is offended by Israel's criticism of Secretary of State John Kerry's handling of Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel. The criticism stems from Kerry bypassing the Palestinian Authority, and moving to directly engage with the terrorist group Hamas and its allies, Turkey and Qatar, to broker a cease in hostilities. The White House has taken a very pro-terrorist stance in joining with Islamists in blaming Israel for its aggressive retaliation against Hamas, who has been firing thousands of missiles at Israeli civilian targets. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said of Israel, "It's simply not the way partners and allies treat each other."

When you look at the track record, it is unclear whether Psaki is speaking of the White House, who is favoring the terrorists, or Israel, who is criticizing Kerry's bias. Let us remember April 2009 when then White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel threatened Israel with allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons if Israel didn't give up land for peace; or in March 2010 when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was left by himself at the White House while the "president" withdrew for a private dinner because Netanyahu refused to sign a written promise on concessions of Jewish settlements; or Netanyahu having to leave the White House from the back entrance past the trash dumpsters.
Is that how you treat an ally? Let us remember Kerry's April testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee blaming Israel for undermining the "peace process" by building new houses and not releasing Palestinian prisoners on time, saying, "Poof, that was sort of the moment." And let us remember the April 29th Daily Beast report that Kerry said Israel risks becoming an apartheid state. Now, Haaretz is reporting that "...Kerry ruined everything. Very senior officials in Jerusalem described the proposal that Kerry put on the table as a 'strategic terrorist attack.'" The White House, the State Department, and Kerry himself continue to put the blame on Israel for a "misinformation campaign."

The White House's and Kerry's commitment to Israel is in question by their own words and actions. Joel 3:2 says, "I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and divided my land." Kerry's and his fellow politicians' attempts to divide the land of Israel have lasting and destructive prophetic consequences for this nation. A veteran ambassador with a commitment to Israel would never use "apartheid" and "Israel" in the same context. From the abundance of your heart, your mouth speaks. Kerry should show some self respect and resign. So should the "president."

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

MELT THE PHONE LINES!

MELT THE PHONE LINES!

The issue of illegal immigration is once again before Congress and the American people due to a man-caused crisis at the southern border. Obama is demanding $3.7 billion in additional spending, while his Democrat allies in the Senate are proposing to spend a billion less.

In the House, Rep. Hal Rogers (R-KY), chairman of the Appropriations Committee, introduced legislation today that authorizes only enough spending to see federal agencies through the end of the fiscal year -- about a fifth of what Obama requested.

In addition, it includes a number of policy changes that Democrats reject, such as amending a 2008 law in order to speed up deportations, lifting environmental restrictions that impede Border Patrol operations on federal lands and preventing certain criminals from applying for asylum.

It is unclear whether the House can pass this legislation. The reason for that is Senate Democrats are reportedly scheming to jam their entire comprehensive immigration reform bill into whatever the House passes. But the phones lines on Capitol Hill are reportedly melting down in support of other immigration-related bills.

A new poll found that 77% of Americans want individuals streaming across our border from Central America to be returned to their home countries -- and that includes 64% of Hispanics. Moreover, most Americans (57%) believe this "humanitarian crisis" is due to the belief that Obama is granting illegal immigrants amnesty.

As we reported yesterday, Barack Obama is preparing to do just that. He is expected to issue new executive orders within weeks granting a mass amnesty to as many as five million illegal immigrants. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) is warning that doing so would effectively gut immigration enforcement in America. He's right.

To counter that, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Marsh Blackburn (R-TN) have introduced bills (S. 2631 and H.R. 5160) that would prevent federal funding for any expansion of Obama's "deferred action" program. That was Obama's 2012 executive order that granted amnesty to more than 520,000 teenaged and adult illegal immigrants who were brought into America as children by their parents.

Senator Sessions said:

"The American people have begged and pleaded for years for our laws to be enforced. We have people in our own country living in violence, fear and poverty every single day. They have demanded an immigration policy that puts their jobs, wages and communities first. Every citizen should pick up the phone and ask of their congressional representative: Where do you stand?"

ACTION ITEM:

Call your representatives right now at 202-224-3121. Urge your senators and representative to support the rule of law. Demand that they prevent another Obama amnesty by supporting the Cruz/Blackburn bills.

> > > A note from CHPP:

Many of you have told us that, when you are trying to call your own member of Congress or the Senate, you are not able to get through. We have had the same experience ourselves, so we have had to go to "Plan B" --

Go to Google and look up the name of your member. THEN, check to see where his district offices are located . . . Each member also maintains 2 or 3 offices in his or her own state, to serve their constituents.
Call that office and ask to speak to the member of the (Congressman's) staff in charge of legislation. When you reach that person, you can then release your message. The member WILL get your vote, in time.

Update: 2014 Mid-Term Elections

The 2014 Mid-Term Elections Are Coming Up!

We are less than 100 days away from the 2014 mid-term elections, which will be held on November 4! It's vital that believers across the nation get involved and vote for godly candidates this year.

Here's why:

-The United States Senate and House of Representatives will be elected.

-Most state Senates and Houses will be elected.

-Most state executive offices (governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, etc.) will be elected.

-Important ballot measures will be voted on. Some of these will decide key issues such as the legality of same-sex marriage and marijuana use.

Voting is a privilege and a fundamental freedom that we've been blessed with!

Unfortunately, only half of the Christian community is registered to vote. And an even more shocking fact is that only half of those who are registered actually vote! (1) This means that a meager 25% of the Church participates in elections and plays a part in setting our government leadership in place. Imagine how the nation would change if 100% of the Church voted! Or even 75%!

To assist you in voting for godly leadership, we've developed simple, easy-to-use election guides for each state. We encourage you to select yours, and use it to aid you in voting this year! Please click on your state to see your election guide.

We encourage you to do your part in changing the nation this year!

[Footnote from CHPP: In the United States Senate, in every midterm election, only one-third of the seats are to be filled again -- 33 senators from as many states. Thank you, USRPN, for providing this valuable resource for our readers!]

The Good News Corner

Victory: Ground Zero Cross Can Remain in September 11 Museum

In a decision that represents a ringing affirmation of the presence of faith in the life of our nation, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals has rejected the American Atheists' challenge to including the famed "Ground Zero Cross" in the National September 11 Museum.

While the entire opinion is worth reading, two excerpts were particularly important. First, the court unequivocally rejected the most dangerous aspect of American Atheists' challenge - the argument that acknowledging the historical importance of faith constitutes improper "religious promotion." To the contrary, the "accurate account of human history" often "requires reference to religion:"

American Atheists point to no precedent holding that when a religious symbol or artifact with genuine historical significance is included in a public historical display, the actual purpose is necessarily religious promotion. To the contrary, the Supreme Court has long recognized that an accurate account of human history frequently requires reference to religion: "The history of man is inseparable from the history of religion." Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421, 434 (1962). Indeed, as Justice Jackson observed in Illinois ex rel. McCollum v. Board of Education, 333 U.S. 203 (1948) (Jackson, J., concurring), "it is a proper, if not an indispensable, part of preparation for a worldly life to know the roles that religion and religions have played in the tragic story of mankind. The fact is that, for good or for ill, nearly everything in our culture worth transmitting, everything that gives meaning to life, is saturated with religious influences," id.
Next, once the display is constitutionally appropriate, it is up to the museum to determine which artifacts to display. It is not up to offended observers to determine how a museum tells the story of our shared history. Here, the court relied on our ACLJ Supreme Court case, Pleasant Grove City v. Summum:

Rare tornado and violent weather slams Boston area; brought heavy rains, lightning and flooding to Boston

Police and emergency crews in the city of Revere, Massachusetts, outside Boston scrambled to clean up after a rare tornado touched down on Monday, downing power lines, damaging homes and overturning at least one car.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down during a storm that brought heavy rains, lightning and flooding to Boston and many of its northern suburbs. State emergency management officials said they were not aware of injuries or fatalities from the storm.

"We are in the process of evaluating the aftermath of the severe storm that passed through Revere this morning," Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo said on his official Twitter page. (Boston Globe) Read more.

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near."

Today's Birthdays

Today's Birthdays on the Hill

Almost every day of the year, a member of Congress or a Senator is celebrating a birthday. Let's lift up these men and women, day by day in prayer on their special day, that God might bless them and show them His love for each one. Indeed, let's move together in obedience to the Lord's mandate in I Timothy 2:1-4. It is written:
"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."
