"Great is Thy faithfulness . . ." (Lam. 3:23)

The Daily Brief

1. IDF: Explosive donkey attacked forces in Gaza- Ynet News

Forces operating near Gaza attacked by explosive-laden donkey, and IDF claim this is not the first time Palestinians have used such animals to attempt and kill IDF forces - read details of this bizarre terror practice.

According to the IDF, ground forces operating in Gaza Strip were attacked by an explosives-laden donkey. According to the IDF blog, which first reported the story, sending animals - specifically donkeys - to their death in service of terrorist purposes is not such a rare phenomena as one might think.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, it is truly amazing the lengths to which the Palestinians will go to harm and destroy and kill. We are appalled at how they use animals, women and children, as devices for their evilness. We offer praise to You that the young IDF soldiers have been able to discern when even simple animals have been used to carry dangerous explosives. We ask You to confront the Palestinians, and continue helping the IDF soldiers to discern this kind of danger. We pray this in the Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen.

-"Blessed is that man who makes the Lord his trust, and does not respect the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. Many, O Lord my God, are Your wonderful works which You have done; and Your thoughts toward us cannot be recounted to You in order; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered." (Psalm 40:4-5)

2. Canadian PM Stephen Harper Courageously Slams Hamas' Terrorism- Canada Free Press

Canadian Prime Minister Harper dominates all western political leaders, in terms of his courageous advocacy of Israel's right to defend itself with all necessary and justifiable force. In this area, no western leader can match Harper's eloquence, tough-mindedness and principled and articulate vocal opposition to Hamas' terrorism.

And that unfortunately includes the hapless and sadly" missing in action" US President Obama. In the wake of Israel's bombing of Gazan missile installations, in reaction to hundreds of missiles being launched by Hamas at Israeli citizens, Harper recently publicly remarked that "self defense is not merely an Israeli right to be exercised in the abstract, but an Israeli obligation that must be defended by all Western nations."Harper further stated that "failure by the international community to condemn these reprehensible actions will encourage these terrorists to continue their appalling actions.''

Harper, on behalf of Canada, called on its allies and partners to recognize that these terrorist acts [by Hamas] were unacceptable and that solidarity with Israel was the best way of stopping the conflict.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, we offer high praise for the courage and righteous speech of Canadian Prime Minister Harper, who speaks up for Your special land Israel and her people, in a world who often condemns the actions of Israel. We ask You to protect and bless Prime Minister Harper and the nation of Canada for this stand. We pray this in Jesus' Name, Amen and Amen.

- "Blessed is he who blesses you, and cursed is he who curses you." (Numbers 24:9b)

3. Russia Involved in Malaysian Airline Crash- Washington Post

Russia supplied sophisticated missile launchers to separatists in Eastern Ukraine, a U.S. official told the Washington Post. Meanwhile, separatists prevented international investigators from gaining unfettered access to the crash site on Saturday.

- Father, we see how conflict in one country affects other countries, and the peace of the world. In the name of Jesus, we bind up the greed for land and influence of Russia in the Ukraine, and pull down the hindrances to access to the area of the crash so that there may be closure for the families and recovery of parts for the airline.

- Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins." (Psalms 7:9)

4. A Desperate Cry from Iraq's Christians - Breitbart

Iraq's Christian leaders have just made a desperate cry for help. Patriarch Louis Raphael I Sako, head of Iraq's Catholic church, has issued an appeal "to all who have a living conscience in Iraq and all the world."

The situation for Iraq's Christians has been steadily deteriorating ever since the 2003 invasion, in part because the U.S. never acknowledged that Christians were being targeted by Islamists and did not prioritize protection of Christians or other minorities.

But with the recent sweep through Mosul and other Iraqi cities by the jihadi group ISIS, Iraq's Christians look to be on the verge of genocide.

On June 16th it was reported that ISIS had marked the doors of Christians in red. Patriarch Sako's letter confirms that rumor. While no one yet knows what this ominous sign foretells, Sako and other Christian leaders are pleading with the world to intervene before the meaning of the sign is made clear.

Earlier this week, Iraqi human rights activist Pascale Warda came to Washington from Baghdad to raise the alarm with the State Department and members of Congress. She was accompanied by Bishop Yousif Habash, who now resides in Elizabeth, New Jersey, but who is originally from Qaraqosh, a city 15 miles from Mosul which was also recently overrun by ISIS, where the Christians still speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, awaken Your remnant to hear these desperate cries for help from our brothers and sisters in Christ! We ask for the leaders of the world to rise up and intervene for Iraq's Christians. We cover these Christians with the Blood of Jesus. We speak protection, and place the angels of God over them. Open the eyes of their enemies to see the angels guarding them, and they will flee or turn to You, Lord Jesus. We ask this in the Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen.

- "Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I." (Psalm 61:1-2)

5. Don't Let The EPA Garnish Wages!- dickmorris.com

The Environmental Protection Administration has published a proposed rule giving it the power to seize property, bank accounts, and garnish wages without going through a judicial proceeding to collect its fines. Only the IRS has this power now.

The EPA is not asking Congress, it wants to take this power by executive action.

Increasingly EPA fines are huge and crippling and apply not just to traditional pollution but to carbon dioxide emissions that, they say, further global warming.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, there have been a number of reports of how the EPA agency is using their regulations to collect huge fines and seize personal property for their agendas, instead of being an agency to protect basic environmental concerns, yet also encourage growth. We cry mercy from You, Father, as our rights and property ownership is being stripped more and more. We ask in the Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen.

- "The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut out." (Proverbs 10:31)

6. Drug-resistant superbug infections explode across U.S. hospitals: 500% increase foreshadows 'new plague' caused by modern medicine- Natural News

Drug-resistant superbug infections have reached near-epidemic levels across U.S. hospitals, with an alarming 500% increase now documented in a study just published in the August issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology (the journal of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America). (1) Lead author of the study, Dr. Joshua Thaden, warned "This dangerous bacteria is finding its way into healthcare facilities nationwide... A CRE epidemic is fast approaching... Even this marked increase likely underestimates the true scope of the problem given variations in hospital surveillance practices."

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, we know that in many ways this epidemic of deadly germs could have been avoided if basic procedures had been followed, and if our society had a less 'entitled' attitude for 'instant' medical help. We ask You for mercy Lord, and for You to rise up and confront leadership on all levels on how to stop this growing health nightmare. In Jesus' Name we pray, Amen and Amen.

-"Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." (Psalm 50:15)

7. Obama Administration Hid Huge Spike of Families Crossing Border- Daily Caller

New data shows the White House has painted a false picture of the Central American migration by hiding a huge spike in "family units" who are illegally crossing the Texas border, according to the Daily Caller.

- How sad, Oh, Lord, to know our very own government has tried to deceive its own people by falsehood. We hold this situation up to You for Your correction, so that our land may be a land of laws and that Your kind of justice may prevail.

-"So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter. Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey." (Isaiah 59:14-15)

8. Obama to Sign Executive Order for LGBT Workers, No Exemptions for Religious Groups- CNS News

President Barack Obama plans to sign executive orders Monday prohibiting discrimination against gay and transgender workers in the federal government and its contracting agencies, without a new exemption that was requested by some religious organizations, CNS News reported.

- Mighty Lord, we come against this executive order in the strong name of Jesus and declare that it will never be implemented. We speak failure to its intent and purpose to cast down Godly morals in this country under a false pretense of "equality." Thank You for raising up a hand against this order which is being issued to bypass the check and balance of Congress. Forgive us, Lord for having these kinds of leaders.

-"It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness." (Proverbs 16:12)

9. Ex-Israeli envoy to US Michael Oren: Kerry wasn't invited, shouldn't be coming; cites "long history" of unsuccessful diplomacy in the region
- Times of Israel

Michael Oren, who until recently served as Israel's ambassador in Washington, said US envoy John Kerry was coming to the region "to our chagrin." US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected in Cairo Monday for discussions surrounding a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The White House said Kerry would seek "an immediate cessation of hostilities based on a return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement," and stressed the need to protect civilian life both "in Gaza and in Israel." In strikingly outspoken comments to Channel 2 on Monday afternoon, Oren cited Kerry's "long history" of unsuccessful diplomacy in the region, the Obama administration's strained relations with Egypt, and the "tension" in ties between the Obama administration and Israel.

- Father God, we praise You for words of truth spoken by Michael Oren. As Secretary of State John Kerry and the UN's Ban Ki-moon gathering in Egypt with the leaders of Hamas as well as Mahmoud Abbas of the PA, to negotiate a" ceasefire", we cry out for mercy, O Lord. We let out a roar of righteous anger, frustration and pain, these US and UN "peacemakers" want to stop Israel from doing what it must do for its own survival. Spare Your people, O Lord, and let not Israel and its IDF be unjustly persecuted by the western world. We ask this in Your name, amen. [Prayer offered by a friend from Australia.]
- "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies." (Psalm 18:2,3)

10. Flight 17 victims' bodies finally heading home - CBS News

GRABOVO, Ukraine -- The train carrying the remains of most of the victims of downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 reached the Ukrainian government-controlled city of Kharkiv on Tuesday, a final stop before they were to be flown back to the Netherlands where their ill-fated journey began.

Dutch officials told CBS News Tuesday morning that forensic experts from the Netherlands would work through Tuesday night, at least, to try and identify the victims in Kharkiv. They were then to be moved onto a Dutch Royal Air Force C-130 already at Kharkiv airport for a flight back to the Netherlands.

The plane wasn't expected to depart before Wednesday morning, and the officials said another C-130 might have to be sent from the Netherlands to handle the remains.

1. Two American-born Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza fighting - Fox News

Two American-born soldiers for the Israeli Defense Forces were killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip, their families confirmed Sunday.

Stuart Steinberg confirmed the death of his Max Steinberg, 24, to The Associated Press on Sunday. Steinberg, whose family lives in Southern California's San Fernando Valley, was a sharpshooter for the Golani Brigade. He was one of 13 Israeli soldiers killed in fighting Sunday during the first major ground battle in two weeks of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Earlier Sunday, the IDF said in a statement that Sgt. Nissim Sean Carmeli, 21, was killed in combat in the Gaza Strip. Carmeli was from South Padre Island, Texas, said Deputy Consul General of Israel to the Southwest Maya Kadosh. She said Carmeli moved to Israel four years ago and added that the consulate helped his family get a flight there Sunday. (Read more)

- Lord God Almighty in heaven, we thank You for the testimony of these two fallen heroes. We thank You that they loved Your land and Your people so much that they actually joined the IDF in fighting for Israel's freedom.

We thank you, too, that friends in Israel are reporting this news: "On Monday night a young 21 year old soldier Sean Carmeli, was buried [in Israel] and some 18,000 people came to his funeral. They did not know him, but because his parents lived in the USA a public cry went out to honor him for his family. The funeral was at 11pm yet 18,000 came to pay their respects for this brave young combat soldier."

Thank You for the unshakeable bond of friendship that exists between America and Israel, "for such a time as this." In Your name, amen.

5. PM Excoriates Hamas on International News Channels - Israel National News

Netanyahu brands Hamas 'the enemy of the Palestinian people', says terror organization using aid to 'blow up our kindergartens.'

"They [Hamas] have taken billions of dollars," he told Sky Arabic. "Instead of building kindergartens with it, they're building tunnels, concrete tunnels to blow up our kindergartens."

"They are the enemies of the Palestinians," the Prime Minister said. "I can tell you that we opened up a hospital, a field hospital, a humanitarian field hospital on the edge of Gaza, and Hamas doesn't let the people come there. They're hiding rockets in hospitals; they're hiding arms in hospitals; they're shooting from hospitals. So they just don't care." (Read more)

6. Seven more IDF soldiers and officers killed in clashes with Hamas - Jerusalem Post

Seven IDF soldiers and officers were killed in battles with terrorists in Gaza and southern Israel on Monday, as the IDF continued to consolidate its hold on areas of Gaza and destroy sections of Hamas's terror network.

Four were killed when their military jeep was hit with an anti-tank missile fired by a Gazan terrorist squad, which used a cross-border tunnel to infiltrate southern Israel on Monday morning, and three were killed in exchanges of fire in Gaza.

The terrorists who entered Israel surfaced from a tunnel near Kibbutz Nir Am, and were dressed in IDF uniforms. They were detected by an IDF lookout, after the army received an intelligence alert from the Shin Bet warning of an imminent attack. (Read more)

7. Revealed: Hamas Wore IDF Uniforms in Latest Infiltration Attempt - Israel National News

The IDF's initial investigation regarding Hamas's latest infiltration attempt from Gaza proved shocking Monday, after it revealed that Hamas has been blending into the Israeli side of the border - by replacing their clothing with replicas of IDF uniforms. The terrorists who attempted to infiltrate an Israeli kibbutz earlier Monday changed their headgear for IDF helmets, according to the report, as well as other similar-looking gear.

As a result, it said, forces on the ground did not recognize for several minutes that the "unit" within sight was actually a terror cell.

The revelation was only uncovered after a commanding officer asked his unit at the scene to identify the other unit, and a second glimpse revealed that they were carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles instead of IDF-issued guns.

The terrorists then opened heavy fire at the IDF soldiers, who eliminated nine terrorists; the remainder fled, likely back to Gaza. (Read more)

8. Hamas tells social media activists to always call the dead 'innocent civilians'- MEMRI

The Interior Ministry of Hamas issued guidelines to Gaza social media users on how they should report events, advising them to depict all casualties as "innocent civilians," and not to show evidence of rockets fired from population centers.

According to a report by MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute) on Thursday, the campaign is being called the "Be Aware - Social Media Activist Awareness Campaign," and an instructional video was posted on its official website and social media accounts.

"The guidelines are aimed at ensuring preservation of the line of Hamas and other Palestinian organizations; preventing the leaking of information that would be of military value to Israel; bolstering Hamas's propaganda efforts outside the Gaza Strip, in both the Arab world and the West; and preventing damage to Hamas's image," said the report. Hundreds of protesters looted shops, burned cars and attacked a synagogue. 1. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has ordered National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexican border - Newsmax

Gov. Rick Perry is deploying up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the Texas-Mexico border over the next month to combat what he said Monday were criminals exploiting a surge of children pouring into the U.S. illegally.

Perry, a vocal critic of the White House's response to the border crisis who is himself mulling a second presidential run, said the state has a responsibility to act after "lip service and empty promises" from Washington.

"I will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor," the governor said.

The deployment of National Guard troops, which may act in a law enforcement capacity under state authority, will cost Texas an estimated $12 million per month. They will simply be "referring and deterring" immigrants and not detaining people, Texas Adjutant General John Nichols said. But he added that the National Guard could take people into custody if need be.

"We think they'll come to us and say, 'Please take us to a Border Patrol station," Nichols said. (Read more)

3. Cartels suspected as high-caliber gunfire sends Border Patrol scrambling on Rio Grande - Fox News

RINCON PENINSULA, Texas -- U.S. Border Patrol agents on the American side of the Rio Grande were forced to take cover Friday night when high-caliber weaponry was fired at them from the Mexican side of the river, sources told FoxNews.com.

The weapons were fired at the U.S. side of the riverbank in the area of the Rincon Peninsula across the Rio Grande from Reynosa, Mexico, at about 8:30 p.m., sources said. Bullets ricocheted into an area where Border Patrol agents were positioned, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, told FoxNews.com.

Border Patrol sources confirmed Gohmert's account, and said the shots may have been fired by .50-caliber weapons.

"We don't have any armor that can stop a .50-caliber round, so our Border Patrol agents had to take cover when the rounds were richocheting around them," said Gohmert, who has been in the area for the last week to get a first-hand look at the border situation.

"When the shooting stopped, about 40 to 50 people came out on the U.S. side and turned themselves in. So clearly the rounds were being fired to suppress every effort to stop anybody intervening with anyone or anything coming across," Gohmert added. "We have no idea what or how many or whom came across with the other illegal immigrants."

Sources said they believe the gunfire came from members of Mexican drug cartels, which include former military members trained in shooting that type of weaponry. (Read more)

The Daily Jot (Part One)

Hating Jews in Europe
Monday, July 21, 2014

The headlines promulgated by the mainstream news media are showing violent anti-Israel protests throughout Europe. "Pro-Palestinian Protestors and demonstrators," as they call them, are throwing bottles, burning the Israeli flag, setting cars on fire, setting up fire barricades, attacking riot police and generally behaving like animals instead of human beings. They are protesting Israel's move on Gaza to put an end to the constant stream of missiles being fired against Israeli citizens by the Muslim Brotherhood-sponsored, peace partner of the White House, and new partner of the Palestinian Authority--the terrorist group Hamas. The mainstream news media, however, isn't telling the whole truth.

The whole truth is that these thousands of protestors in London and France are immigrated Islamists as instigated by anti-Jewish propaganda and communist-driven anarchist groups. The France Interior Ministry has banned such protests, but, as Reuters reports, "The far-left New Anticapitalist Party, an organizer of last Sunday's rally and the banned one in Paris, urged protesters in Paris to defy the ban, prompting police to issue a warning." Strange, still no mention of Islam. The mainstream media is so set on making the anti-Israel protests look like spontaneous, justice-minded reactions to the Jewish crackdown on the poor occupied palestinians, that they have forgotten one small detail: the one about Islam and its hatred for Jews and Israel.
For years, the Daily Jot has been warning about the increasing Islamic population in Europe and in the United States. It is almost 10% in France and nearly 5% in England--as compared with about 2% in the United States (officially only .8%), according to muslimpopulation.com, which cites Pew Research and its own internal estimates. The concentrated Islamic population in European cities is a ready made formula for violence when Israel decides to defend itself or when someone "insults" the so-called prophet Muhammad. Remember the anarchy in the streets in Paris in 2005, across Europe in 2012, and again in 2013, now again in 2014?

If there were riots where all the Jews live around the world whenever they feel insulted by Muslims, the news media would certainly have their reaction. Somehow, I don't believe that the headlines would be so kind as they are to the "Pro-Palestinian Protestors." But we must remember that Islam is the "religion of peace" so if it lights a match to neighborhoods around the world, it must be justified to do so. The real headlines should read, "Jew Haters Burn Paris and London." That's what it is all about--hate. "Palestinian" schools in Israel teach that Jews are pigs and should be hated. I know, I've seen it first hand. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

The Daily Jot (Part Two)

Christian persecution and the White House

In February 2012, WorldNetDaily (WND) reporter Aaron Klein reported "Several knowledgeable Egyptian and Arab security officials claimed the U.S., Turkey and Jordan were running a training base for the Syrian rebels in the Jordanian town of Safawi in the country's northern desert region." As it turned out, several news sources have reported that Syrian rebels who joined the Islamic State (of Iraq and Syria) (IS), were trained in 2012 by US instructors at that secret base in Syria. Jordanian officials said dozens of future IS members were trained by the US and the IS leader was released when the "president" shut down an Iraqi prison in 2009. Now Christians are among those suffering the impact.

This radical militant group has swept across Syria and Iraq, invading, murdering and claiming territory. It is an al Qaeda offshoot and is attempting to establish a worldwide caliphate. In doing so, it has given an ultimatum to Christians living in northern Iraq: convert to Islam, pay the tax, or die. Reuters reports that the IS issued a statement announcing: "We offer them three choices: Islam; the dhimma contract - involving payment of jizya; if they refuse this they will have nothing but the sword." The statement was issued in the name of the IS in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh and had been distributed and read it the mosques in the city of Mosul.
Reuters reports the statement said Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, which the group has now named Caliph Ibrahim, had set a Saturday, July 19 deadline for Christians who did not want to stay and live under those terms to "leave the borders of the Islamic Caliphate...After this date, there is nothing between us and them but the sword." Reuters reports that Mosul's Christian population was 100,000 ten years ago, but because of persecution and war dwindled to about 5,000 last month before the IS took over the city. Reuters reports that a resident there said, "The vast bulk of those have since fled, leaving perhaps only 200 in the city." A similar decree was issued in the Syrian city of Raqqa in February.

The US "president" has taken many terrible "decisions" during his occupation of the White House. In nearly any previous history of America, he likely would have been impeached, tried for treason, or even convicted of high crimes and misdemeanors. A man who says he is Christian has overseen some of the worst treatment of Christians in his own country, and has contributed to the suffering of Christians around the world. Titus 1:10 begins, "For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers... " And in verse 16 concludes: "They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." Draw your own conclusions.

Calling Israel to Prayer and Fasting

Joel Rosenberg on Fox Interview:

A Message for P.M. Netanyahu
"Call the nation of Israel to prayer & fasting during this Gaza war."

(Washington, D.C.) - It is time for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to call his nation to a special time of prayer, fasting and reading the Bible.

This is what all the wise kings of Israel and Judah did in ancient times when facing war and serious threats, and it is time to do so again.

This was the message I shared on the Fox News Channel today as I was interviewed by anchor Shannon Bream.

You can watch the interview by clicking here (it begins 1:50 minutes into the clip). You can also read a transcript of the interview here.

Top Marine to Obama: Get in the Fight

Top Marine to Obama: Get in the Fight

It's highly unusual for a high-ranking soldier, let alone a high-ranking Marine, to publicly question White House and Pentagon policy. Yet that's exactly what four-star General James Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps, did yesterday in Washington.

Speaking at the Brookings Institute Tuesday, Amos said the Obama administration paved the way for the emergence of the Islamic State of Syria and Iraq (ISIS) by completely withdrawing American troops in 2011.

"I have a hard time believing that had we been there, and worked with the government, and worked with parliament, and worked with the minister of defense, the minister of interior, I don't think we'd be in the same shape we're in today," Amos said.

Amos also blasted the White House for failing to live up to its obligations around the world.

"We may think we're done with all of these nasty, thorny, tacky little things that are going on around the world -- and I'd argue that if you're in that nation, it's not a tacky, little thing for you. We may think we're done with them, but they're not done with us," Amos said.

"We're probably the only country in the world that has the resources and the capability to be able to do some of this that others can't," Amos added.

Perhaps Amos felt free to voice opinions on White House policy because he is set to retire this fall. Now, his comments are likely to influence the debate within the defense community about how to handle the myriad of crises going on around the world.

Unlike most issues in Washington, the argument surrounding American engagement around the world does not split along party lines. One strand of the GOP, represented by Rick Perry, believes the United States cannot retreat into an isolationist posture. The other, represented by Rand Paul, believes engagement will lead to prolonged wars like the one in Afghanistan.

Amos is clearly in Perry's camp. He also gave voice to a growing concern among DOD brass: that the troops who sacrificed by fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are becoming disillusioned as the gains they made disappeared.

"It breaks our hearts," Amos said, referring to the fall of the Anbar province in Iraq, which Marines won in 2010. He noted that 852 Marines were killed and another 8,500 injured in Iraq.

"They believed that they'd made a difference," he said. (Yahoo Finance) Read more.

The Good News Corner

Family of Jailed Chinese Pastor Escape to United States

"We were incredibly disturbed to hear of the absurd 12-year sentence handed down to Pastor Zhang Shaojie last week. Pastor Zhang is an innocent man whose only crime was to shepherd a thriving community of Christians who had worshipped peacefully in Nanle County for years." -Isaac Six, International Christian Concern

(China)-On July 4, 2014, the state-sanctioned Nanle County church pastor, Shaojie Zhang, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in China, charged with "fraud" and "gathering a crowd to disturb public order."

His daughter, Huixin (Yunyun) Zhang, together with her husband and one-year-old Sun Zhulei, escaped China to the U.S. on July 14, with the help from ChinaAid. Although Yunyun's visa appellation at the US Embassy in Beijing was rejected in April, since her father's imprisonment, her family has reportedly been given advance parole authorization by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

The family is now in Dallas, Texas, where the First Baptist Church of Midland is providing support for them.

In China, meanwhile, after the Nanle County case raised international attention, the Nanle County government claimed that it had nothing to do with religious persecution.

Pastor Zhang's defense lawyers contest that Nanle County authorities, including the court that sentenced Pastor Zhang, have handled this case in a way that "continuously violated Chinese criminal procedure law." ChinaAid reports that "there have been several accounts of human rights lawyers and international media reporters being beaten, harassed and even been placed under administrative detention by Chinese authorities." Yue Lina, one of the Christians from Nanle Church, was forced into a mental hospital by local authorities.

Pastor Zhang's family has decided to bring an appeal to Puyang City, hoping for a better result in a higher court than at the county level.

Yellowstone Earthquake Threat High In 2014, Says USGS;

What Does This Mean For A Volcano Eruption?

The threat of the Yellowstone volcano blowing its top has some people fearing the possibility since a supervolcano eruption has the power of a nuclear explosion. But if the United States Geological Survey (USGS) now says the Yellowstone earthquake threat is high, then is there any reason to worry in the coming years?

Yellowstone conspiracy theory supporters claim USGS is hiding earthquake data in order to prevent national panic, and when it was claimed the National Guard was preparing for an "event" at Yellowstone National Park, the conspiracy theorist websites took that information and ran with it. To a certain extent, these fears are justified. For example, the British Geological Survey claims the threat of a supervolcano is more likely than the dangers posed by global warming or World War 3.
But to put those fears into perspective, as we recently reported, the USGS calculates the odds against a Yellowstone volcano eruption as 730,000 to one, and a premier researcher named Dr. Robert Smith claims the odds are 1,000,000 to 1, which some may find comforting. Even though asphalt roads melting sounds scary, it's actually a regularly occurring event and the damage was already repaired.

But the fires of controversy may be stoked once again since the USGS has updated its national seismic hazard maps for the first time since 2008. As you can see, some of the higher risk areas (shown in red) happen to be centered around Yellowstone National Park. (See map and article here.)

"And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near."
