The Daily Brief Tuesday, October 30, 2012

"The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters."
(Psalm 29:3)

The Daily Brief

1. Over a dozen dead, over 6 million without power as Sandy pummels the East Coast - Fox News

Monster Storm Sandy slammed into the East Coast Monday, killing at least 16 people, hurling a record-breaking 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City and knocking out power to an estimated 6.2 million people.

b.) Resident Warns People Will Be 'Fighting In The Streets' For Gas, Food In Sandy Wake - AP

A strengthening Hurricane Sandy churned north Monday, raking ghost-town cities along the Northeast corridor with rain and wind gusts. Subways and schools were closed across the region of 50 million people, the floor of the New York Stock Exchange was deserted, and thousands fled inland to await the storm's fury.

c.) Mammoth storm Sandy plunges NYC into darkness - AP

Much of New York was plunged into darkness Monday by a superstorm that overflowed the city's historic waterfront, flooded the financial district and subway tunnels and cut power to hundreds of thousands of people.

- Lord, we pray that this storm would be used by the Holy Spirit and Your angels to cause people to cry out to You. Lord, raise up Your church in unity to move in outreach as You did for Katrina. Lord, guide people to Your desired haven for them.

Lord, let this be a wakeup call for America. Let this be an awakening for the Northeast especially , the home of our original thirteen colonies. May the prayers of prior generations and the freedoms people fought for be answered in this hour, and may we have a new birth of freedom under God.

May this storm be used for good, cleansing darkness out of our land and causing Your light to shine across this great nation. We pray for mercy, Lord. Bring our people out of their distress and calm the storm. As souls melt in desperation, let their spirits be awakened to You. Let Your kingdom come as a result of this storm. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

- "For He commands and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm, So that its waves are still. They they are glad because they are quiet; So He guides them to their desired haven. Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! Let then exalt Him also in the assembly of the people, and praise Him in the company of the elders. (Psalm 107:23-32)

2. Obama campaign fears impact of Hurricane Sandy - AFP

A top aide to Barack Obama voiced fears Sunday that Hurricane Sandy could hurt the president's re-election chances by reducing turnout, as the impending storm forced both candidates to cancel campaign stops.

- Lord, we pray that the storm would not hinder or stop the election. We pray that people will vote for life, freedom, and the protection of marriage between a man and woman. However You choose to do that Lord, we pray for righteousness to arise out of this storm. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

- The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. (Proverbs 21:1)

3. Over $60,000 in Welfare Spent Per Household in Poverty - Weekly Standard

New data compiled by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee shows that, last year, the United States spent over $60,000 to support welfare programs per each household that is in poverty. The calculations are based on data from the Census, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Congressional Research Services.

- Lord, we offer praise that our government has a heart to help those in need, but we cry out that this assistance be rendered wisely. For those who are receiving welfare payments, but who are perfectly capable of caring for themselves, we ask that they be weeded out of this system and put back to into the work force. But for those who are truly in need, we ask that principles of wise stewardship be applied by those in authority to help them. May we as a people practice the principle of "moderation in all things." In Jesus' Name, we pray, amen.

- Can He give bread also? Can He provide meat for His people? (Psalm 78:20)

4. Syria truce in tatters as jets bomb capital - UK Telegraph

Syrian air force jets bombed rebellious suburbs of Damascus yesterday, leaving the United Nations-based ceasefire in tatters.

- Lord, we still pray for Syria to come in alignment with Your purposes. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

- So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land. (Ezekiel 22:30)

5. UPDATE: Sandy's Death Toll Hits 39; Damage Could Top $20 Billion
- Associated Press

Millions of people from Maine to the Carolinas awoke Tuesday without electricity, and an eerily quiet New York City was all but closed off by car, train and air as superstorm Sandy steamed inland, still delivering punishing wind and rain. The U.S. death toll climbed to 39, many of the victims killed by falling trees. More than 8.2 million people across the East were without power. Airlines canceled more than 15,000 flights around the world, and it could be days before the mess is untangled and passengers can get where they're going. Read more.

- As the East Coast begins to recover from the impact of Sandy, and as our residents take stock of its devastation, we ask that you continue in prayer over all details related to this storm. We continue to ask our Lord to comfort the millions who are afflicted tonight, as the sun sets on their darkened and cold homes. Please pray for a miracle of God's grace to intervene in the life of each one. Pray!
- "Pray without ceasing." (Eph. 5:17)

The Daily Jot

Sandy is nothing compared with the spiritual storm ahead

Hurricane Sandy left death and devastation in its wake. As post-storm reports flow in, there are incredible pictures of the damage this storm did a week before the US elections. Many people just want to count it as an act of nature. Some want to say it is the result of man-made global warming. Others understand the great power of these storms and believe their source is the highest power. Whatever to which people want to credit the source of such devastation, these disasters bring out the best and the worst in people. There are many acts of selflessness and heroism. There are many acts of self centeredness and violence. It is true that we cannot know the heart, only YHVH knows.

A storm the size of Sandy should call us all to self examination, introspect, even repentance. It used to be that in insurance documents such storms were considered an "Act of God." Nowadays, people like to explain these things away. My personal opinion is that YHVH uses these types of phenomena to get our attention. This hit a week before the election. It is considered one of the largest storms in the history of our nation. Is there anything symbolic that we can take away from this? To me, the answer is quite simple. Sandy is no where near as devastating as what we as a nation face in the future if we continue our ways of turning our backs on the one true God, YHVH.
Homosexual marriage, alliances with Islam, fiscal irresponsibility, a lack of accountability, acceptance of lies, changing the nature of the Messiah in the way He is worshipped and the meaning of his example and teachings, being readily deceived by leaders and preachers--this is just a small list of the ingredients of the spiritual storm we shall face as a nation unless we repent from our wicked ways. 1 Peter 4:17-18 says, "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of YHVH: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of YHVH? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?"
Additionally, Yeshua says in Matthew 5:45 the Father "makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." We have seen the physical storm come upon both the just and the unjust. We need to pray for those whose lives were devastated by this storm, that they might know YHVH and see his righteousness and blessings. As in Matthew 8 when Yeshua was asleep during the great storm and waves were coming over the ship. "He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm." Last night, the winds were roaring and the rain blasting, but we were comforted. It is always good to be in the same boat with Yeshua when the storm comes.
Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

On the Campaign Trail

On the Campaign Trail:

7 Days Until Election Day

1. One Week To Go

With just one week left until Election Day, this critical election remains a toss-up. According to the RealClearPolitics.com average of polls, Mitt Romney has a slight advantage -- 48% to 47.1% over Barack Obama.

Here's some more encouraging news: A new Gallup survey suggests Gov. Mitt Romney has a fairly substantial lead among early voters. You wouldn't know it from Gallup's headline, "In U.S., 15% of Registered Voters Have Already Cast Ballots." But toward the end of the report is this crucial fact: "Romney currently leads Obama 52% to 45% among voters who say they have already cast their ballots."

Now here is an important caveat. We don't know where all those early votes are concentrated. As I noted last week, the presidential race is really several mini-contests to see which candidate can get 270 votes in the Electoral College. Key people in Ohio are telling us that the Obama machine is turning out its vote in that critical swing state. Without Ohio, Romney's path to 270 and the White House is more complicated, but by no means impossible.
Here's why: The number of competitive states appears to be expanding. The Obama campaign has dispatched Bill Clinton to Minnesota, which last voted for a Republican presidential candidate in 1972. If Minnesota is really in play, then Obama is really in trouble! (Gary Bauer)

2. Obama, Romney Carefully Hit Trail Again After Storm

Mitt Romney on Tuesday attended a relief effort in Ohio for the victims of superstorm Sandy - staying in the public eye but keeping away from political talk with just seven days left before Election Day. "We have heavy hearts, as you know, with all of the suffering going on," said Romney, standing on an equipment box inside a Kettering, Ohio, gymnasium. "I appreciate what you have done."

Romney spoke for about five minutes, talking about Massachusetts' efforts while he was governor to help Hurricane Katrina victims, before he began collecting food and other staples.

The Obama campaign said former President Bill Clinton will make two stops Tuesday in Colorado -- in Commerce City and Denver. Clinton's trip is part of a swing through battleground states and states with strong Democratic bases, which include Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.
Both candidates and their running mates have tempered their campaigns, eager not to appear out of sync with more immediate worries over flooding, power outages, economic calamity and personal safety. The storm will dominate the news and distract a nation of voters during the crucial handful of days that remain before Nov. 6.

"When the nation's largest city and even its capital are endangered, when so many people are in peril and face deprivation, it's hard to get back to arguing over taxes," said historian and presidential biographer Douglas Brinkley. (Fox News) Read more.

3. The top five reasons Barack Obama should not be re-elected as President

"CHOOSE YOU TODAY WHOM YOU SHALL SERVE . . ."

[Editor's note: we submit this information to you for your own prayerful consideration, as you consider your own vote next week for who will serve as our next President.]

INTRODUCTION:
"...and if it seems evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day
WHOM you will serve..."
(Joshua 24:15)

Here we go . . . this clip makes some interesting points about where our nation is headed.

Let's pray it all through on behalf of this beloved nation. No doubt things are changing right before our eyes. A line is drawn in the sand on November 6th, and Jesus is standing on both sides witnessing the hearts of all the people, particularly HIS own.

Encouraging you to stand firm, pray and vote!

Suspend The Election?

Suspend The Election?

Even though much of the East Coast is shutting down as Hurricane Sandy approaches, we are monitoring left-wing media and websites. I don't think this is serious, but I want to clue you in on an idea that has the left buzzing today.
No one in the federal government has suggested this yet, but some liberal commentators are raising the prospect that the damage from Hurricane Sandy could be so widespread in the Northeast that the election should be suspended.

There was a notable exchange this morning on CNBC between Andrew Ross Sorkin and New York Times columnist John Harwood. Sorkin asked Harwood if there was any precedent for suspending an election. Harwood responded that he wasn't aware of any for the presidential election. But primary elections in New York City were cancelled on the morning of September 11, 2001.

Again, I don't want to be alarmist. It's not clear to me who would benefit or who would be hurt by any delay. Obama's early vote in certain states has been strong. So much so that liberal commentators are suggesting it will make up any advantage Romney has on Election Day. From Obama's perspective, that argues for holding the election sooner rather than later.
The Romney/Ryan ticket certainly has momentum right now. Benghazi was starting to get the attention of more and more voters. Sandy may have stopped that.

I can't imagine a delay in the election. Any attempt to stall the voting would be fought in the courts and quickly rise to the Supreme Court. But even with this major storm, we continue to be on the job. Our prayers are with those in the path of Hurricane Sandy, as well as the first responders in the affected states. (Gary Bauer)

Jobs Report Delay Possible

Obama Labor Department May Delay Jobs Report Til After Election

POLITICO reported that the numbers release on Friday would give a boost in numbers to Romney. "Republican pollster Ed Goeas of The Tarrance Group, who helped conduct the poll, said the president turns some voters off when he talks about good economic news because there is a disconnect between what they're experiencing and what he's describing. He warns that a bad jobs report Friday could be a game-changer."

But wait, later on today the U.S. Labor Department came out and . . . said the hurricane might just delay the release of the jobs report on Friday. The Wall Street Journal reports of the statement released by the Labor Department:
The U.S. Labor Department on Monday said it is "working hard to ensure the timely release" of the October jobs report, saying it intends to released the report on schedule Friday despite Hurricane Sandy.

"It is our intention that Friday will be business as usual," said Carl Fillichio, a senior press advisor at Labor. Mr. Fillichio's statement provided clarity to an earlier Labor statement that said the agency would assess how to handle data releases this week after the "weather emergency" is over.

There is no doubt that this is a political strategy. Many believe it is a desperation, and that might be, or it may just be politically strategic for the Obama campaign. I mean if you had terrible jobs numbers and you were a Republican, wouldn't you try to hide them too, especially in a close election? I think so.
The Bureau of Labor is already somewhat suspect after the numbers that came out earlier this month which saw a significant drop in unemployment numbers, but then it was discovered that the entire state of California was not even counted. This will be a roller coaster ride in the final week before the election. (Freedom Outpost) Read more.

- The Lord has much to say in His Word about those who deal falsely. In this week of severe judgment, may those who are manipulating these figures for political purposes stop, take heed, and change course quickly. Pray that this week's unemployment data WILL be released, in truth!

-"'Do not steal. "'Do not lie. "'Do not deceive one another." (Leviticus 19:11)
