The Middle East in Focus

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

1. IDF to beef up Gaza border fence as protests persist - Times of Israel

The IDF on Wednesday said it would begin building a new border fence with the Gaza Strip in an effort to bolster security and prevent Palestinians from being able to breach the barrier into Israel.

According to officials, the high-tech electronic fence will stretch for 65 kilometers (40 miles) along the entire length of the border between Israel and Gaza.

The current border is marked by a smaller barbed-wire fence equipped with sensors and surveillance cameras, but will be replaced with one similar to the barrier built over the past few years along the Egyptian border, which is 7 meters (21 feet) high at its highest point.

2. Another intifada brewing? Israel calls in troops to try to stop escalating violence - Fox News

Israel's military deployed hundreds of troops Wednesday to help police trying to stop a wave of deadly Palestinian shooting and stabbing attacks that have triggered panic across the country.

Police also say they shot and killed a Palestinian who had stabbed a 70-year-old Israeli woman outside Jerusalem's main bus station. Investigators say the woman was moderately wounded.

Eight Israelis and 30 Palestinians -- including 13 identified by Israel as attackers -- have died in a month of unrest, with dozens of other people wounded.

The attacker attemped to board an Egged bus before being shot dead by Border Police. The station was evacuated and searched by police.

4. Israel Calls Citizen Gun Owners a 'Force Multiplier' Against Terrorism, Eases Gun License Rules - The Blaze

In an effort to stem a wave of Palestinian attacks targeting civilians on buses, light rail stops and on city streets, the Israeli government Wednesday decided to ease citizens' access to guns, calling legal gun owners a "force multiplier" in combating terrorism.

"In light of the security situation, I have decided to make it easier to obtain a gun permit," Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said in a statement Wednesday. "In recent weeks, many citizens helped the Israel Police neutralize terrorists carrying out attacks. Citizens trained in the use of firearms are a force multiplier in the struggle against terror."

The move followed a call last week from Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat - himself a licensed and trained gun owner - urging Israelis with gun licenses to carry their guns with them when they leave their homes.

6. Police to Restrict Muslim Entry to Temple Mount on 'Day of Rage' - Israel National News

The Commander of the Jerusalem District of the Police, Moshe Edri, on Thursday evening held a security assessment, following which he announced that police would restrict the entry of Muslim worshipers into the Temple Mount on Friday.

According to Edri's instructions, Muslim men aged 40 and over and women of all ages will be allowed into the compound.

The Jerusalem Police will continue to employ reinforcements around the capital, especially around the Old City and traffic routes used by worshipers at the Western Wall and the Temple Mount.

7. Israel, at UN, says will not accept international presence on Temple Mount - AFP

United Nations (United States) (AFP) - Israel told the UN Security Council on Friday that it will not allow an international force to be deployed in east Jerusalem to quell violence around the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque.

"Let me be crystal clear -- Israel will not agree to any international presence on the Temple Mount. Such a presence would be a change in the status quo," Israeli Deputy Ambassador David Roet told the UN Security Council.

1. Russia and Iran Moving to Corner the Mideast Oil Supply - American Thinker

It looks like Vladimir Putin and the ayatollahs are preparing to corner the world's oil supply - literally. Last May I wrote on this site that Iran was in the process of surrounding the Saudi/Wahhabi oil reserves, along with those of the other Sunni Gulf petro-states. I added that, "Iran's strategy to strangle Saudi/Wahhabi oil production also dovetails with Putin's interests. As the ruler of the second largest exporter of oil, he would be delighted to see the Kingdom's production eliminated or severely curtailed and global prices soar to unseen levels. No wonder he is so overtly supporting Iran." We've now seen Putin take a major, menacing step in support of the Iranians by introducing combat forces into Syria. Many analysts argue that he's doing this both to protect his own naval base at Tartus and as some sort of favor to the Iranians.

~Father, we know in these last days there will be many wars and rumors of wars. There seems to be no end to the greed in man's heart. We ask You to protect the natural resources of our land, and all the lands where You have placed these resources, from unscrupulous terrorists who wish to exploit these nations and steal these resources for evil purposes. Use these resources for good and not for evil. In Your Name, we pray, Amen.

- "I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army--your horses, your horsemen fully armed and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords." (Ezekiel 38:4)

2. China Joining Russia In Syria Brings Risks Of World War - News Investor

American Decline: Chinese forces head to Syria to join with Russia in filling Obama's power vacuum and purportedly fight the Islamic State. A false move involving NATO member Turkey could mean world war. Russian and Chinese military sources now confirm that Chinese warships are en route to the Middle East to get in on some of the action of humiliating the U.S. In just a week and a half, Moscow has upended the dynamics of power in the Mideast by taking on the role that President Obama relinquished: acting like a superpower in a regional conflict that has implications extending far beyond the region.

~Lord, over the years we have heard many preachers talk about Russian and Chinese armies combining their resources to go down to Israel in the Battle of Armageddon, and perhaps this is a prelude to their common desire to destroy Your people and nation. We speak confusion to their ranks, and we ask You to station your angels among these forces, so that things will be done, according to Your desire, and Your timing. In Your Name, we pray Amen.

- "A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace." (Ecclesiastes 3:8)

3. Joseph's Tomb Set on Fire by Palestinians in Anticipation of Friday "Day of Rage" - Breaking Israel News

A Palestinian mob set fire to Joseph's Tomb Thursday evening, the site containing the remains of the Biblical patriarch Joseph, located in the city of Nablus.

Security forces belonging to the Palestinian Authority managed to disperse the over hundred-strong mob, Channel 2 reported, and put out the flames at the tomb. IDF forces arrived on scene once the riot was quelled.

- Father, we speak peace to all the violence that is happening in Israel. You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. We bind fear, and release Your power and love over this region.

- "A quick-tempered person does foolish things, and the one who devises evil schemes is hated." (Proverbs 14:17)

4. Because of Defense Spending Cuts, Navy Won't Have Aircraft Carrier in Middle East Anymore - Daily Signal (Heritage Foundation)

Few people would select the first option. It doesn't take Russia launching air strikes in Syria (to cite only one recent example) for most to admit that tensions are rising. So why in the world are we cutting defense spending? And not by small amounts. The U.S. military-which is smaller today than it was on September 9, 2001-has had to contend with cuts amounting to more than $180 billion over the last four years. And there's no relief in sight.

In fact, President Obama is preparing to veto a bipartisan bill that would increase the national defense budget by 6 percent. And all because he's upset that it wouldn't increase non-defense spending by the same amount.

Playing political games with national security is beyond the pale. Yet it's happening.
~Lord, again we ask that You - in Your mercy- would enable this president to do the right thing. We ask that You visit him, and encourage him to set his house in order, and his priorities in the budget as well. We ask wisdom for this president, and courage to do the right thing that pleases You, and brings honor to Your Name. Amen.

- "Thus says the LORD: 'Set your house in order, for you shall die, and not live.'" Then he turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the LORD, saying,3) "Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly." (2 Kings 20:1-3)

5. DOJ Creates New Position to Tackle Domestic Terror Threat - TownHall

The new lawyer, who the DOJ declined to name, will assist the department in identifying trends "to help shape our strategy, and to analyze legal gaps or enhancements required to ensure we can combat these threats."
~ Father, it seems strange that the Department of Justice is declining to name the new leader, who they have chosen to assist in identifying trends etc., in domestic terrorism. Protect us, O Lord, we pray, and heal our Land. Amen.

-"If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey. Only do not revel against the Lord; and do not fear the people of the land. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them." (Numbers 14:8-10)

Our Grandmothers' Songs

Songs Our Grandmothers Sang:

LOVE DIVINE, ALL LOVES EXCELLING

"God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him."
(1 John 4:16)

Lyrics

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down; Fix in us thy humble dwelling; All thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation; Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit, Into every troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit; Let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its Beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.
Come, Almighty to deliver, Let us all Thy life receive; Suddenly return and never, Never more Thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above, Pray and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love.
Finish, then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be. Let us see Thy great salvation Perfectly restored in Thee; Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

About the Hymn:

In 1961, during the Manchester, England, crusade . . . just as the meetings were about to start, Billy Graham became quite seriously ill . . . Billy had been scheduled to speak to the ministers of London just before the crusade opened. You can imagine my feelings when he sent word that I should represent him and speak at that meeting. The British pastors are themselves thorough scholars and often brilliant preachers. And they were expecting to hear Billy Graham, not me!

At the beginning of that meeting in Westminster's Central Hall, the ministers joined in singing this great hymn of Charles Wesley. Most of these British clergymen were also well acquainted with hymn texts and hymn tunes, and they sang gloriously. Accompanied by the grand piano and the great pipe organ and using the Welsh tune "Blaenwern," these familiar words lifted our hearts in praise and prayer to God. I felt God's strength evident through the singing; He blessed our meeting together despite my fears and their disappointment.

NASA's Enceladus flyby: Cassini to dive through icy spray of Saturn's moon

This week's cruise past the northern pole of the Saturnian moon from a distance of 1,142 miles will give scientists a chance to see if icy plumes like those seen earlier at the south pole are active on the "top" of the satellite during its current northern summer. But the real excitement comes later this month when Cassini will circle back and pass within just 30 miles of the south polar region, actually flying through the spray of the plume.
