The Daily Brief

1. Super Typhoon Haiyan, Strongest Tropical Cyclone On Record, Destroys Buildings And Homes, Causes Landslides, Kills At Least 3 - International Business Times

Typhoon Haiyan, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, has claimed at least three lives, damaged buildings, washed away homes and caused landslides, after it made landfall on the islands of Leyte and Samar -- about 600 miles southeast of Manila -- with winds close to 315 kilometers (196 miles) an hour.

~ Father, we ask You to still these winds and waves, as You did when the disciples called for help in the storm. We ask that You comfort those who have lost loved ones. We speak healing to those injured physically and emotionally. We ask for Your peace to sustain them through this hard time. Amen.

-"He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!' Then the wind died down and it was completely calm." (Mark 8:39)

2. Kerry warns of third intifada, Israel's isolation, if peace talks break down - Jerusalem Post

US Secretary of State John Kerry painted a very bleak picture of what would be the result of a break-down in the current Israeli-Palestinian talks, warning on Thursday of a third intifada and international isolation of Israel Kerry's warnings came in an unusual joint interview with Channel 2's Udi Segal and Maher Shalabi of Palestine TV.

~O Lord God of Israel, we come to You on behalf of our nation, and Israel. We know Your promises that those who bless Israel will be blessed, and those who curse her will be cursed. We do not want our nation to incur Your wrath, so we ask that You intervene to make it clear to this administration to not threaten Israel, or try to force them to divide their land. We ask that You protect Israel, as the apple of Your eye, and also those of us who love Israel, and look to You for their protection, and ours.

- "I will bless those who bless you, but I will curse anyone who curses you; and by you all the families of the earth will be blessed."(Genesis 12:3)

3. Obama: 'I am sorry' for health-insurance cancellations - Washington Times

After sidestepping the issue for weeks, President Obama on Thursday issued a straightforward apology to Americans who are losing their health insurance even though they were emphatically and repeatedly promised that wouldn't happen.

~Abba, this has been an unimaginable fiasco. Why the rush to put this healthcare bill into effect, when there are obviously serious flaws in need of correction. Apologies don't solve the problem. We ask, Lord, that You shine Your light on all this mess, and expose it for what it is. May this lead to revisiting this legislation and either canceling it, or clean it up. Give wisdom to those making these decisions, we pray. Amen.

-"And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, naked and defenseless to the eyes of Him with Whom we have to do." (Hebrews 4:13)

4. Obamacare Mishaps Leave Democrats Fuming - Bloomberg

Senator Barbara Mikulski, a prominent liberal who voted for Obamacare, made news when she decried "the crisis of confidence" inspired by the troubled rollout of the Affordable Care Act. She's far from the only Democrat unhappy with the White House. President Obama has two years to fix the problems with healthcare.gov, but many congressional Democrats have to run for reelection next year.

~ Lord, we do ask that as these Democrats worry about their reelection next year in the face of angry voters, that they will move with the Republicans to restore sanity to this healthcare bill, and that they would either stop the implementation of this bill, or rework the whole thing to fix that which is broken. We ask this for the sake of the American people, many of whom are finding that this "Affordable Care Act" is not affordable, nor comprehensive. Amen.

-"And they argued and discussed it and reasoned together with themselves." (Isaiah 1:18)

5. Democrats considering bill to lift minimum wage by 40 percent - Washington Examiner

Senate Democrats, hoping to move beyond the disastrous rollout of the new health care law, plan to pivot to legislation that would increase the federal minimum wage by nearly $3, to over $10 an hour.

~Father, we ask that You give wisdom to these people who are considering raising the minimum wage, that they would find the funding for it before they implement it. We ask for fiscal responsibility, so that this can be done without increasing our debt, or taking from other necessary services. We thank You for Your wisdom, understanding, and discretion. In Your Name we pray, Amen.

-"The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you." (Proverbs 4:7,8)

6. Senate passes gay-rights bill to prevent workplace discrimination - Washington Times

The Senate on Thursday passed a historic bill to prevent discrimination against gay and transgender employees -- sending the bill to the House where GOP leaders have signaled that it's dead on arrival.

~ Father, again, we ask for cool heads to prevail as this bill is discussed in the House, and that wisdom will prevail. Guide the discussion, we pray. We commit this to You, asking that somehow You will bring glory to Yourself through this debate. In Your Name we pray, Amen.

"How much better it is to get skillful and godly Wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver." (Proverbs 16:16)

2. Kerry slams Israel's West Bank policies, warns of 3rd Intifada - Times of Israel

US Secretary of State John Kerry launched an unusually bitter public attack on Israeli policies in the West Bank Thursday, warning that if current peace talks fail, Israel could see a third intifada and growing international isolation, and that calls for boycott, divestment and sanctions would increase. Kerry made the comments during a joint interview with Israel's Channel 2 and the Palestinian Broadcasting Corporation.

Boko Haram Purging Christians from Nigeria's North - The Christian Post

She said Boko Haram poses a threat to moderate Muslims, as well as Christians, who criticize the group for using religion to achieve political gain.

"They fight Christians because they are different," she said, "but both Christians and Muslims don't want to apply Sharia the way Boko Haram want to."

"Ultimately, the problem with this group is some of the sheikhs included in it, who are known to be resilient and wouldn't surrender easily. Whenever security has pinned down their location, they move to another place. We fear that these groups, who are engaged in guerrilla warfare, would be able to grow in numbers and become more powerful than the Nigerian army," said Yakubu.

She said there is a law in Nigeria to confront terrorism, but is has not yet been applied, for fear of the group's wrath.

Update From The Supreme Court

Supreme Court Wrestles with Public Prayer Issue
(Washington, DC)-As of Wednesday, the US Supreme Court took on a case regarding whether or not to allow Christian prayers before public meetings, and has been reportedly wrestling with conflicting views from the justices ever since.

According to a Charisma News report, Justice Samuel Alito noted the difficulty in crafting a prayer that would appease all religious groups (Christians, Hindus, Jews, Buddhists, Muslims, etc.) without favoring one, or leaving out another.

"I just don't see how it is possible to compose anything that you could call a prayer that is acceptable to all of these groups," said Alito.

Currently, Supreme Court precedent is that prayers held in a state legislature do not violate the First Amendment because of the "unique history" of that practice throughout the nation's past.

At any rate, they have time to hash it out as the ruling on the case-"Town of Greece vs. Galloway"-is expected by the end of June, 2014.
