The Daily Brief

1. North Korea conducts third controversial nuke test - AP

Defying U.N. warnings, North Korea on Tuesday conducted its third nuclear test in the remote, snowy northeast, taking a crucial step toward its goal of building a bomb small enough to be fitted on a missile capable of striking the United States.

- Lord God, whatever the North Koreans do toward its goal of building this bomb to strike the United states, we ask that You intervene and bring failure every time, and they never have success. Let nothing work properly so that they never reach this goal. In Jesus' Name.

- "The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked, and the scepter of the rulers."(Isaiah 14:5)

2. French Assembly passes gay marriage, adoption bill - AP

France's lower house of parliament approved a sweeping bill on Tuesday to legalize gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to adopt children, handing a major legislative victory to President Francois Hollande's Socialists on a divisive social issue.

- Father God, by approving this bill the nation of France has brought themselves under the same defeat that was brought upon Sodom and Gomorrah when God rained down fire and brimstone from heaven to destroy them because of sodomy. Draw out those who are tender-hearted, and save their souls so their lifestyle is in right-standing before the God of heaven. In Jesus' Name.

- "Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven." (Genesis 19:24)

3. Iran says it is converting uranium, easing bomb fears - Reuters

Iran acknowledged on Tuesday that it was converting some of its higher-grade enriched uranium into reactor fuel, a move that could help to prevent a dispute with the West over its nuclear program hitting a crisis in mid-2013.

- Father, uncover any deceptive work that Iran is hiding so the West will always know the truth. Their target is to destroy Israel and, if successful, destroy America also, the two nations on the earth that profess God to be supreme over all things. Stay the hand of the enemy, Lord God, and cut the cord between the evil one and Iran's government. In Jesus' Name.

-"Then said the Lord, Know you wherefore I come unto you? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia (Iran): and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia (America) shall come." (Daniel 10:20)

4. Obama calls for job growth and reining in budget deficits in State of the Union address - Washington Times

Laying out an activist, big-spending second-term agenda, President Obama called on Congress in Tuesday night's State of the Union address to spend more on job-creation proposals for the middle class and claimed it would not add to the nation's huge budget deficits.

- Father, this man has turned his face toward the people of this land, a raiser of taxes, seemingly coming in peaceably, attempting to obtain this country by flatteries, so he can continue to work deceitfully to destroy this nation. God, we call for the Lord of Hosts to come forth with Your great warring army of angels to fight this battle for us. We cry out that we will not be destroyed by men who move without opposition, scattering us to be weak, and taking the riches of our land by robbery. God, stand with us and fight for us by Your great power. In Jesus' Name we pray.

-"And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he deceive by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits." (Daniel 11:32)

5. Food Stamp Rolls in America Now Surpass the Population of Spain - CNS News

Since taking office in 2009, food stamp rolls under President Barack Obama have risen to more than 47 million people in America, exceeding the population of Spain.

- Father, we lift up the 47 million people who are now living on food stamps because their income has been cut and their jobs taken from them. Disaster has been imposed upon them and they seemingly have no recourse but to live with what the government has dealt them. Lord God in heaven, may they all begin crying out to the Lord for help, repent of their sins, and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of their souls. We pray that this 47 million desperate people be revived and saved by the blood of Jesus. In His Name we pray.

- "That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10)

This week, for all the headlines cited below, please join us in proclaiming THIS DECREE:

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord, And to sing praises to Your name, O Most High . . ." (Psalm 92:1)

3. US accused of foiling Palestinian reconciliation - Times of Israel

The Persecuted Church

Today's Focus: The Persecuted Church

"Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14:27)

1. Christian Refugees Comment on N. Korea Nuclear Test - Mission Network News; ICC

North Korea said Tuesday that it had conducted a new, more powerful underground nuclear test. Jerry Dykstra, a spokesman for Open Doors USA explains, "North Korea again defied world opinion and UN resolutions by conducting a third nuclear test. They threatened the United States directly, and they also are threatening to go even farther in the future."

Open Doors partners aren't fazed by this "new" face. Though not related to nuclear testing, believers in North Korea suggest that aggression against perceived enemies is likely to increase. According to Timothy (not his real name), a 24-year-old North Korean who was almost tortured to death because he was seen as a traitor after being arrested in China nine years ago, "The government is preoccupied with nuclear tests. "They ignore all freedoms. The human rights level is 0%. Religions are not allowed. The leader of North Korea (Kim Jong-un) has to be worshipped as god, and this will not change unless the regime collapses." (Read more.)

2. Supporters of American pastor jailed in Iran take case to UN - Fox News

Supporters of American Pastor Saeed Abedini, imprisoned in Iran for practicing his Christian faith, have asked the United Nations to take up his cause.

The European Centre for Law and Justice filed a formal request with the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to call on Iran to immediately release Abedini, who is serving an eight-year prison sentence in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran.

"By bringing his story before a global audience, it's our hope that member states and other organizations will become a strong voice for Pastor Saeed - raising the visibility of this troubling case and putting additional pressure on Iran to free him," said Jordan Sekulow, executive director of the American Center for Law and Justice, which is affiliated with the European organization. 3. America's new government-imposed religion - Washington Times

> > > THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY REP. J. RANDY FORBES, R-VA.

. . . when people of faith are restricted from fully participating in society - owning businesses, entering the medical profession or providing much-needed charitable services - an intolerable trade-off has occurred. The government has exceeded its boundary, and the figurative wall between church and state must be strengthened.

The tide has turned, and we have begun to see the emergence of a state-created orthodoxy. It deems support for traditional marriage unacceptable. It discredits those who believe that life begins at conception. It disfavors their faith - held for centuries by their predecessors - and creates a regulatory framework to prevent them from fully participating in the public square.

When the government says, "You can believe whatever you want, but you will be penalized if you exercise those beliefs," we have entered dangerous territory. We cannot allow a religious litmus test to determine who may participate in American life. We must defend the Constitution not only in form, but also in effect. Nominations
The Senate will continue consideration of several presidential nominations - Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense, John Brennan for Director of the CIA, and Jack Lew for Secretary of Treasury. The Senate Armed Services Committee could vote as early as Tuesday on Hagel's nomination. Republicans are standing the strongest against Hagel and are threatening a boycott of the committee vote. Sensing an opening after Hagel's dismal performance during the confirmation hearing, most Republicans have announced their opposition. However, it is still unclear how many will actually join a filibuster, especially in light of McCain's promise to stand down. On the other hand, Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has announced his intention to force a 60-vote threshold when the nomination hits the floor.
Today, the Senate Finance Committee held its first hearing on Jack Lew's nomination to be Secretary of Treasury. Lew was previously Obama's chief of staff and director of OMB. He is one of the biggest ideologues for redistributive fiscal policy in the entire Obama administration. Yet, Lew invested in a venture capital fund based at the Ugland House in the Cayman Islands - the very type of offshore tax shelters that Obama has been using as straw men for his class warfare. Republicans must vigorously question him on his hypocrisy and failed policies as Obama's budget director.

Hagel Nomination Stalled

Hagel Nomination Stalled

Congratulations to Christians United for Israel (CUFI) and the Emergency Committee for Israel! Largely because of their efforts, the nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense has run into a ditch. Senators, led by Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, are filing the necessary motions to effectively require that Hagel obtain 60 votes instead of 51 to be confirmed as Secretary of Defense. There are 55 Democrats in the Senate, so the White House would have to peel-off 5 of the 45 Republicans to get Hagel through. (We will supply you with the names and contact number of the wavering Republicans later this week.)

Of course, this shouldn't even be a close battle. Many of the 55 Democrat senators campaign as being pro-Israel, and Hagel's anti-Israel hostility is clear to everyone. Most Senators say that they are for a strong national defense but Hagel wants to take a buzz saw to the Pentagon budget. Add that to his weakness on Iran and it is amazing to consider that he has not withdrawn his name from consideration. The battle will continue but the odds are improving for our side. (Gary Bauer)

State of the Union Address

State of the Union Address

The "checks," "barriers," "immutable principles," "circumspection," "habits of restraint," and "respect for Christian morality and equity" that de Tocqueville observed in American politics in 1831 seem to have disappeared in 2013. The Wall Street Journal writes:

The big question of President Obama's second term is whether he wants to forge bipartisan compromises in the next two years, or [campaign] against Republicans to regain Democratic control of the House in 2014 . . . we're guessing he's going for Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Mr. Obama's second inaugural was a clarion call to "collective action". . . Tuesday's speech showed what he thinks that should mean in practice. "The American people don't expect government to solve every problem," he said, while proceeding to offer a new government program to solve every problem.
Not enough job creation? Have the feds set up 15 new "manufacturing hubs" where business can get government advice . . . Decaying public works? How about a "Fix-It-First" plan to pay the unemployed to repair roads and bridges? . . . the "shovel-ready" stimulus projects of the first term become the "most urgent repairs" of the second . . . Lousy K-12 results? Have the feds finance pre-school for "every child in America."
Not enough money to subsidize electric cars or more Solyndras? Create a new Energy Security Trust, funded by taxing oil and gas companies. Not all women earn as much money on average as men? Pass the Paycheck Fairness Act so government can unleash the trial lawyers to enforce equal pay. Climate change? Congress must "soon" pass the Lieberman-McCain version of cap and trade that couldn't pass the Democratic Senate in 2010, or he'll unleash his regulators at the EPA. Stagnant wage growth? Raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour and index it for inflation. But if a higher minimum wage can conjure middle-class prosperity, why not make it $20 an hour--or $50?
There was so much more, but . . . It is not an olive branch for bipartisan deal-making with the House GOP. In its ambition and partisan framing, the agenda sounded like the opening bell in the 2014 Congressional campaign, an attempt to mobilize the new liberal majority he believes he has forged in his first four years (WSJ ).
On his sexual agenda in public policy, the President said, it was our "unfinished task" to make sure Americans get ahead "no matter...who you love." He proposed that expanding pre-school programs . . . would help in "reducing teen pregnancy . . ." He said, "We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families -- gay and straight. We will draw upon the courage and skills of our sisters and daughters, because women have proven under fire that they are ready for combat."
In the aftermath of Newtown, CT, the President said his proposed nationwide gun-control regimen would be worth it if "if even one child's life can be saved." Last night, he declared "what I've said . . . matters little if we don't come together to protect our most precious resource -- our children." Yet these concerns about our children come from the most pro-abortion President in American history, who is simultaneously coercing Americans to pay for abortions and abortifacient birth control even as our marriage and birth rates are declining with the help of liberal public policy! The President has warned that he plans to take independent action on many of these issues due to Congress' slowness to enact his agenda.
- May God's people fall to their knees and remain before Him with extraordinary prayer over the next four years. May God hear our prayers for our President and nation. May he not increase the long-term burden but rather lighten the load of the American people. May we not reap irreconcilable division in America like that brought in Ancient Israel when King Rehoboam rejected wisdom of Israel's elders. May we repent, seek God's face and find His favor again.
- "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matthew 3:2)

PRAYER ALERT! VERMONT!!

PRAYER ALERT! VERMONT!!

We have a prayer need in the Vermont Senate.

A Physician Assisted Suicide bill is advancing to a third reading on Thursday, February 14th. So far, the vote has been 17-13 to advance the bill but two votes are changeable. This would create a 15-15 tie that our Lieutenant Governor would back by killing the bill.

Five other eastern states have similar bills currently in their legislatures but Vermont is the best chance that the pro-death movement has to score a win this year.

Please join us in prayer as we declare a Culture of Life for Vermont and forbid the Culture of Death from advancing any further in our state and our nation."

Jews and Arabs Preaching Jesus in Tel Aviv

"God is love and He loves you [Israel] as a nation." -Petros, Arab Christian from Nazareth

(Tel Aviv, Israel)-Amid all the arguments over how and if Jewish and Arab Believers must "reconcile" to one another, some Jewish and Arab Believers are simply getting down to business and joining forces to preach Yeshua.

Recently, Tel Aviv-based Messianic leader Jacob Damkani, as he is wont to do, took to the streets of his hometown to share his faith with fellow Israelis. But this time, he did so with some special partners-Arab Christians from Nazareth.

As one Arab named Petros explained, his desire is to share the love of the Jewish Messiah with the Jewish people. (Israel Today)
