The Middle East in Focus

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

1. Israelis Refused Entry Into Jordan With 'Jewish Paraphernalia' in Luggage - Algemeiner

An Israeli family on a Hannukah vacation to Jordan was shocked to be turned away at the border, due to the skull caps (kippot) on the heads of the father and two sons, the Israeli site nrg reported on Thursday.

Tamar Gewirtz Hayardeni, the mother of the family, told nrg about the ordeal, after ranting about it on Facebook.

Tamar, a licensed tour guide who has been to Jordan in the past, described the family's encounter with Jordanian border authorities, who were adamant that the male members of the family not enter the country with their kippot, claiming it was for their own protection.

2. Israel successfully tests Arrow 3 missile defense system - ynet news

The Defense Ministry and the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) conducted a successful test of the Arrow 3 missile-defense system on Thursday morning.

The Arrow 3's radar system detected the Sparrow target missile fired by the Air Force and transmitted its coordinates to BMC system (Battle Management Control), which analyzed the information and planned the interceptor's trajectory.

The interceptor missile was then fired from the Palmachim Beach towards the sea, successfully hitting the target and destroying it outside the earth's atmosphere.

3. Netanyahu wants Palestinian violence linked to 'radical Islam' - Washington Post

JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stepped up his rhetorical campaign to convince the world that the surge in Palestinian violence here is not born of frustration against Israel's decades-long military occupation, but is instead the work of radical Islam.

In a series of speeches and public pronouncements since the Paris attacks last month, Netanyahu has been urging the United States and the international community to view the latest wave of daily Palestinian knife, gun and vehicular attacks against Jewish Israelis as a part of a globalized assault by extremist Muslims against Western democracies.

"The terrorists are attacking in California or in Israel, or for that matter in Paris. They are attacking the very values that we hold dear - freedom, tolerance, diversity," Netanyahu said Sunday.

4. New phase in Syria war brings Israeli disputes to light - Times of Israel

Defense ministers are generally judged for their handling of a war. Dayan in '67 and '73, Sharon in '82, Peretz in 2006. The battlefield is where their legacies are made and lost. But the current defense chief has made his mark, thus far, in another manner - in the artful, non-capitulatory avoidance of war.

Next door an internecine war is being waged, a maelstrom of historic proportions. It is the whirlpool at the heart of the Middle East, drawing in some of the region's cruelest actors. And Israel, without selling its soul or discarding its crucial interests, has managed not to get sucked in.

5. Pro-Israel academics launch network to fight battle against BDS on US campuses - jpost

"You don't see 'Boycott Syria' or 'Boycott China' or 'Boycott Venezuela,' or any other country whose human rights records are, I would argue, considerably worse," said a chairman of the new network.

NEW YORK - A group of faculty and administrators from dozens of colleges and universities across the United States launched the Academic Engagement Network this week to address issues relating to Israel.

Many US campuses have faced controversies in recent years related to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement including attempts to silence or disrupt Israel studies scholars, Israeli guest speakers or intimidating Jewish students.

6. Denmark warned it is funding Israel's destruction - Israel National News

The NGO Monitor research institution on Wednesday took part in a special session of the Danish Parliament, and told Danish lawmakers the supposedly humanitarian funds their country is handing over to local NGOs is actually advancing anti-peace agendas.

Shaun Sacks, a researcher at the independent Jerusalem-based NGO Monitor, addressed the Foreign Affairs Committee and Foreign Policy Committee in Copenhagen.

He revealed that Danish taxpayers' money being sent through third party NGOs for the goal of stopping the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in fact end up funding projects that contradict the Danish government's stated objectives.

Denmark's Parliament has over the years passed resolutions urging a negotiated peace deal based on the 1949 Armistice lines, calling to normalize ties between Israel and the Arab states, and calling for an acceptance of Israel's right to security.

7. Trump cancels Israel trip, will meet PM 'after I become president' - Times of Israel

Controversial Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced Thursday he was "postponing" his Israel trip, saying he would meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after he is "elected US president." The GOP front-runner, who has drawn scads of criticism for a proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US, was scheduled to meet with Netanyahu on December 28 during a trip here.

Netanyahu's office on Wednesday defended the scheduled meeting - which had been sharply criticized by Israeli lawmakers - as a decision made in line with a policy of agreeing to meetings with presidential candidates.

The Daily Brief

1. Theft of dozens of propane tanks, purchase of 150 prepaid cell phones in Missouri puts FBI on alert - R.T./USA News

The FBI has launched an investigation after 150 prepaid mobile phones were bought from local Walmarts in Missouri. This comes after the theft of dozens of propane tanks in the area. The large number of purchases took place at six Missouri Walmarts at least, authorities say, according to KRCG13. A large portion of the phones were bought by "three men with accents" at one Walmart near the town of Lebanon, Jefferson City police said. The purchases were made very late, at 3:50am local time on Saturday, authorities said for 59 of the phones. (Read more)

- Abba, we bring this whole situation to You.  We know that You know men's hearts, and their intentions and plans.  This sounds very much like a preparation for multiple acts of terror. We ask You to shine Your light in all the dark corners of these plans, so that they would be exposed and stopped before they can take place. Reveal these would-be terrorists, we pray, and trip them up in the snare they wish to bring to others. We cancel their assignments in Jesus Name, and cover us all with Your precious blood and protection! Hear our cry, O Lord, and deliver us from evil!  In Your name we pray, Amen.

- "For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and He examines all your paths. The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast. For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly." (Proverbs 5:21-23)

2. Christian Mother Who Fled Islamic Extremism in Iran Killed in San Bernardino Terrorist Attack - Gospel Herald

One of the 14 people killed by suspected terrorists in San Bernardino, California was a devout Christian woman who fled Iran at just 18 years old to escape Islamic extremism and the persecution of Christians that followed the Iranian Revolution.

Benneta Betbadal, 46, was among those killed on Wednesday at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino by Syed Farook and his wife, both of whom reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS prior to the massacre. "It is the ultimate irony that her life would be stolen from her that day by what appears to be the same type of extremism that she fled so many years ago," reads a Go Fund Me page started to help Benneta's grieving husband and children; a daughter, 15, and two sons, 12 and 10. (Read more)

- Abba Father, we thank You for Benneta Betbadal and the love that she gave to her family. We ask for Your comfort and peace for her family as they grieve. We pray not only for Benneta's family, but for all who lost loved ones in this terrible terrorist act. We also lift up to You those that survived and the first responders, police, FBI and doctors and nurses. May they all come to know You as their Lord and Savior. In Your Name, we pray, Amen.

- "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4)

3. KILLER CLUES: FBI scouring lake for proof of even deadlier terror plot - Fox News

An FBI dive team returned to a San Bernardino lake Friday with equipment including a foot-long metal detector, seeking evidence pinpointing the motive and history of the married attackers, including an apparent plot in 2012 that was never carried out.

Fox News has learned that in 2012, one of the gunmen, Syed Farook, conspired with former neighbor Enrique Marquez, the man who purchased the rifles used in the deadly attack in San Bernardino on Dec. 2. The plot would have targeted the Los Angeles area. (Read more)

- Again, Lord, we praise You that, day by day, the FBI is making headway on examining all the details of the lives of these two terrorists, and now their associates, too. We continue in prayer that all hidden things be revealed, including whatever is in the bottom of this lake, and that by Your grace and Your mercy, You would lead these investigators to the answers they seek. We ask this prayer in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light." (Mark 4:22)

4. SB Shooter's Mother Has Ties to The Same Terror Group That Hillary Clinton's Muslim Aide Has. Surprised? - Walid Shoebat

This certificate given to Rafia Sultana Farook, which was found when MSNBC reporters stormed the home of the San Bernardino terrorists in search of a scoop only hours after the FBI had left the scene, speaks volumes on the same connections that Hillary's aid, Huma Abedin (also from Pakistan) is involved in with her family.

In the top green line (see photo above) on the document, it says that Rafia Farook is member of "The Islamic Circle of North America Sisters wing" which sprouted from the radical Pakistani political group called Jamaat-e-Islami created by Abu A'la Maududi, in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The goal of this outfit is to establish an Islamic state worldwide and who also worked closely with Huma and her family (the Abedins) in Saudi Arabia.

The arm of this group is so extensive and operates worldwide. This system of recruiting Muslim women (the sisters) stems from the Muslim Brotherhood's plan to fulfill its mission for the Sisterhood, which was established as far back as 1933, headed by Lebiba Ahmad and expanded to the Indian subcontinent with Saleha Abedin (Huma's mother) was also member. (To view this documentation, as well as this lengthy article, please go here.)

- Father God, we offer You all the praise, all the honor, and all the glory that this wicked ICNA "Sisters Wing" has now been exposed. Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayers, in Jesus' name. We cry out for the souls of each one of these sisters, that You would visit them, bring them to salvation, transform each one into Your image . . . that we might then call them "Sisters in Christ." We ask this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "For with God nothing shall be impossible." (Luke 1:37)

5. Trump Cancels Israel Trip, will meet Netanyahu "after I become President" - The Times of Israel

The GOP front-runner, who has drawn scads of criticism for a proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US, was scheduled to meet with Netanyahu on December 28 during a trip here. Netanyahu's office on Wednesday defended the scheduled meeting - which had been sharply criticized by Israeli lawmakers - as a decision made in line with a policy of agreeing to meetings with presidential candidates.

"I have decided to postpone my trip to Israel and to schedule my meeting with Netanyahu at a later date after I become President of the US," Trump wrote on Twitter."I didn't want to put him under pressure," Trump told Fox News. "I also did it because I'm in the midst of a very powerful campaign that's going very well and it (the trip) was not that easy to do." (Read more)

- Father, we thank You that Mr. Trump is postponing/canceling his planned trip to Israel later this month, and thereby removing some pressure off of P.M. Netanyahu.  We ask that You would protect both of these men from those who wish to do them harm. We cover them with the blood of Jesus, and may they both come to know You and love You, and follow Your instructions for the rest of their lives.  We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.

- "For everything there is a season, a right time for every intention under heaven ---
a time to keep silent, and a time to speak."
(Ecclesiastes 3:1,7)

6. House clears bill to avoid shutdown - The Hill

The House cleared legislation on Friday to avert a government shutdown hours before a midnight deadline, as top congressional leaders pressed toward closing a deal on a long-term spending bill. Congress now has until next Wednesday, Dec. 16 to either pass the yearlong spending deal or another stopgap measure to avoid a shutdown. (Read more)

- Lord, we thank You for this news and pray that each member of Congress would seek Your face, and Your wisdom, as they endeavor to avoid another shutdown of the government. We ask You to reveal to them the answers to the dilemma they face, and may their priorities line up with Yours, we pray. Help them to make cuts where there is overspending, and to fund those things that truly need funds, such as our Veterans, we pray, Amen.

- "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free." (Ephesians 6:7,8)

7. Scientists have found a new strain of bacteria that is resistant to all antibiotics- News.com.au

For years experts have warned there would come a day when antibiotics would cease being effective. And it seems . . . scientists discovered a new superbug . . . has the ability to infect other bacteria. But instead of destroying its virulent cousins this new strain of e.coli actually strengthens them by giving them the same antibiotic shield. (Read more)

-Jehovah Rapha, we come to You, our Father, and our Healer. We know that Jesus said there would be many plagues and illnesses to attack the people in the last days; but we know You are greater than any antibiotic, and You speak and it is done. We know the purpose of these attacks are to draw men to You for the answer, and salvation. We do ask that You would, even now, give great wisdom and understanding to our scientists and biologists who are seeking a cure against this new strain of bacteria. Show them the answers, we pray, in Jesus Name, Amen.

- "Then Jesus told them, 'Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be violent earthquakes, and in various places famines and [deadly and devastating] pestilences (plagues, epidemics); and there will be terrible sights and great signs from heaven.'" (Luke 21:10,11)

8. States enacted 47 pro-life bills in 2015 - LifeSite News

Nearly 400 pro-life bills were introduced in state legislatures nationwide in the last year, and 47 passed, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR).

Over the last year, "extremist state lawmakers continued their assault on reproductive freedom, introducing almost 400 bills and enacting 47 new restrictions on access to reproductive health care," the CRR noted in its "2015 State of the States" report, subtitled "Fighting Back by Pushing Forward." These included laws ranging from a ban on abortions for children capable of feeling pain, to defunding Planned Parenthood, to mandatory waiting periods and parental consent laws. (Read more)

-Abba Father, we give You thanks and praise for this wonderful report! We pray that the pro-life movement will continue to succeed in saving the lives of babies in utero in 2016. In Your Name we pray, Amen.

- "From the mouth of infants and nursing babes You have established strength because of Your adversaries, to make the enemy and the revengeful cease."(Psalm 8:2)

9. Estonians unveil massive banner in front of Parliament to promote natural family - LifeSiteNews

On November 24 2015, the Foundation for the Protection of Family and Tradition (SAPTK) set up a symbolic demonstration in front of the Estonian Parliament - the Riigikogu - and on the central plaza of the nation's capital in order to send those in power a strong message regarding the meaning of marriage and family.

The demonstration was to keep on amplifying the voice of the many who do not accept the enforcement of the Registered Partnership Act against the will of the majority of the people and instituting a fundamental reordering of the definition of family and marriage - as well as the enforcement of a leftish-liberal ideological programme alien to Estonian society.

A video summary of the demonstration presents the messages proclaimed: "If politicians fail to see the most basic truth about being human, let us raise it in front of their eyes as visibly as possible," says the video.

Central to the demonstration was a giant 600 square metre banner initially spread out at the more-than-a-million strong Paris mass demonstration Manif pour tous. (Read more)

- Abba Father! Hallelujah! Bless Estonia and hold it in the palm of Your hand. May the Christians in the USA have the intestinal fortitude to do the same! We praise You for this wonderful report. May this demonstration for righteousness spread across Israel, Europe and the Americas. In Your Name we pray, Amen.

- "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel."
(Isaiah 7:14)

10. North Korea claims it has hydrogen bomb; experts skeptical - CNN

State media indicated Thursday that North Korea has added the hydrogen bomb to its arsenal, a development that, if true, would represent an upgrade to its nuclear weapons capabilities.

Observers in recent years believed that North Korea may have been working toward -- but didn't yet have the capability to produce -- a thermonuclear bomb, which can be hundreds of times more powerful than an atomic bomb. (Read more)

- Lord we are aware that North Korea lies and pretends it's tougher than it is. But in the event that they aren't making this up, we ask that You prevent them from doing anything to harm any other nation. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

- "No weapon formed against you shall prosper" (Isaiah 54:17)

Our prophetic strategy to the war with Islam

The "president" says we are not at war with Islam. Trouble is, when Islam has declared war on the US--not just the political body of the United States--but you and me as citizens, we are at war. Whether the "president" wants to continue his charade about definitions for Constitutional purposes--that is, not being charged with treason for aiding and abetting the enemy during time of war--is in material. Islam is killing us, plotting to kill us, and has plans to take over our country. The "president" and members of both political parties are assisting Islam by allowing terrorists entry because of religious freedom and as refugees. We--you and me--must stand as prophetic people with a prophetic strategy to win this war.

There are three fronts to this war. One front is Muslims killing Americans on America soil, so that is a violent front. We need to defend ourselves in these cases. There are two other fronts where we must fight--political and spiritual. The political front is standing firm that Islam, by its history, is a radical, anti-democracy cult hiding behind false religion aimed at overthrowing governments. We need to educate every politician, every one we know, about the 1952 Immigration law prohibiting entry of those with an ideology that seek to overthrow our government. We must impress aggressively that this law must be upheld as those confessing the Koran, by its own conviction, would be prohibited.

Now the really hard part--the spiritual. As Christians, we are called to make disciples. No matter how unappealing it is, we should take Christ to the Muslims in the US, and, where we can, influence them in other parts of the world. This really means, creating relationships--not submitting to--but demonstrating Christ where possible. The Daily Jot's experience with evangelizing Muslims is that success is found in relationships. This is not to say "cast your pearls before swine," but rather judiciously discern who you approach and then demonstrate the love of Christ. Islam is devoid of God's love. The desire of men's hearts is to be loved. Proverbs 10:12 says, "Hatred stirs up strifes: but love covers all sins."

Remember that there are many Muslims, like many Christians, who do not read their holy books. They only know what they are told. As we know, sometimes what is taught from the pulpit is not what the scriptures really say. Perhaps, some Muslims would be appalled that their holy book commands them to kill those who do not believe as they do. But to get to that point with them, you have to have relationship. This is what we have learned in West Africa reaching out to Muslims. To summarize, we must hold our leaders accountable to the law AND we need to do what Christ commanded us to do. Some may be called to one, some to the other, but as a prophetic people we are all called first to Christ. Let us do so with great resolve. Physical and spiritual lives depend upon it.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Praying for our Malls

Praying for our Malls

Dear Friends,

Now that we have reached the height of the holiday shopping season, it is time to pray for the safety and the security of all our malls across the nation, including all who shop there and who work there.

We offer these guidelines for prayer, and thank you for joining us as we stand together against the threat of further terrorist attacks in our nation.

Sara Ballenger
Capitol Hill Prayer Partners
chpp1994@yahoo.com

1. SPEAK FORGIVENESS

Ask our Lord to forgive all who might be intent on doing us harm; they know not what they do.

"Then Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.'"
(Luke 23:34)

2. APPLY THE BLOOD OF THE LAMB

Apply the Blood of the Lamb over all shopping malls in your own region, including movie theaters that are close by.

"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death." (Rev. 12:11)

3. POST ANGELS AT EACH POINT OF ENTRY

Ask our Lord to post His angels over each point of entry in these malls. Cancel curses that have already been spoken over those gates, in preparation for terrorist acts to follow.

"Bless the Lord, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word." (Psalm 103:20)

4. PRAY FOR THE SECURITY PERSONNEL ON SITE

Each mall actually has two levels of security: those who guard the mall itself, as well as those who (in the larger stores) employ their own security personnel. We understand that these men and women meet on a regular basis with the FBI and others in Homeland Security, and are being briefed upon whom they need to monitor. Ask for increased vigilance on the part of all mall and store employees this weekend.

"Meanwhile, the Lord said to me, "Put a watchman on the city wall. Let him shout out what he sees." (Isaiah 21:6 NLT)

5. PRAY THAT ANY EVIL PLOTS BE EXPOSED AND THWARTED

Ask our Lord to assist all intelligence agencies to exercise an unusual level of alertness this weekend. Pray that not only potential terrorists, themselves, be monitored, but also those "secondary" men and women who may be serving as their drivers and those who have purchased weapons for them.

"Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; Speak the word, but it will not stand, For God is with us." (Isaiah 8:10)

6. ASK OUR LORD TO CAUSE SHOPPERS TO AVOID THE MALLS AND TO SHOP ELSEWHERE

Lift up prayer that, by the Spirit of the Most High God, many who would feel to go to a mall this weekend would instead feel prompted to ship elsewhere.

"The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps." (Proverbs 16:9)

7. REJOICE! GOD IS ANSWERING OUR PRAYERS!

Rejoice in the Sovereignty of our God, knowing that He is in control, and that, as we ask, we will receive, amen.

"Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever." (Psalm 107:1)

Middle East Revivals:

IRAQ

Christianity is also quietly advancing in the turbulent nation of Iraq. Again, it needs to be noted that these numbers precede the vicious emergence of ISIS and the aftermath of the Arab Spring. Multitudes of Christians have been martyred since these figures were originally reported. Yet, even the fact that Muslims felt compelled to quell its advancement suggests that Christianity's influence has been growing.

"Before 2003, senior Iraqi Christian leaders tell me, there were only about four to six hundred known born-again followers of Jesus Christ in the entire country, despite an estimated seven hundred fifty thousand nominal Christians in historic Iraqi churches. By the end of 2008, Iraqi Christian leaders estimated that there were more than seventy thousand born-again Iraqi Believers."

As many are aware, the expansion of Christianity has been greatly hindered more recently in Iraq. Don't be mistaken, this martyrdom and brutality will ultimately give way to more Christians in the land once known as Babylon. (Breaking Christian News)

Iranian woman stoned to death as world marks UN 'Human Rights Day'

As the world marks International Human Rights Day on Thursday, Iran is continuing its execution spree with the announcement that a woman has been sentenced to death by stoning.

The gruesome penalty, in which the wrongdoer is buried up to their shoulders and pelted with rocks, was first reported on the Persian-language Iranian website LAHIG. The woman, who was identified only by the initials "A.Kh," was convicted of being complicit in her husband's murder.

An Iranian criminal court in Rasht, the capital city of the northern province of Gilan, handed down the brutal sentence.

"The rate of executions in Iran has not decreased in the last few years, it has increased," Maryam Nayeb Yazdi, a prominent Canadian-Iranian human rights activist based in Toronto, told FoxNews.com. "Although stoning has become more rare in Iran, such sentences are still being issued by Iranian judges. The probability of a stoning sentence to be carried out is slim due to the international sensitivity of the issue; there is a great chance her sentence may be 'converted' to death by hanging." GOOD NEWS:

What This Chinese Mom Did to Give Her Five Girls LIFE

"I Am Alive Today Because My Chinese Mother Broke the Law and Gave Birth to Me"-a Special Testimony on International Human Rights Day

Only weeks ago, the Chinese Communist Party announced that China will change its long-standing one-child policy to a two-child policy.

While this is welcome news, the nation's violent, coercive family planning regime will only be altered moderately by this change. Even ending the policy entirely cannot bring back lives already lost.

For almost four decades, the oppressive regime has strictly implemented forced sterilization and forced abortions on millions of women who were caught having more than one child.

China's official health ministry estimates that over 330 million children have been aborted since the policy was instituted in 1980. Often, women found pregnant with more than one child are dragged out of their homes, beaten and forced to undergo abortion by the government's family planning enforcement.

This news is personal to me. I come from a Chinese family of five girls and one boy. All the girls were born in communist China; the youngest three, including myself, were born illegally after the one-child policy went into effect. (Bound4Life) Read her testimony here.

Our Grandmothers' Songs

Songs Our Grandmothers Sang:

A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

"God is our Refuge and Strength, a very present Help in trouble."
(Psalm 46:1)

Lyrics
A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth: Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever.

About the Author:

Words & Music: Martin Luther, 1529

This song has been called "the greatest hymn of the greatest man of the greatest period of German history" and the "Battle Hymn of the Reformation."

This hymn was sung at the funeral of American president Dwight Eisenhower at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, March 1969.

About this Hymn:

In 1720 a remarkable revival began in a town in Moravia. Jesuits opposed it, and the meetings were prohibited. Those who still assembled were seized and imprisoned in stables and cellars. At David Nitschmann's house, where a hundred and fifty persons gathered, the police broke in and seized the books. Not dismayed, the congregation struck up the stanzas of Luther's hymn,

"And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us; We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us."

Twenty heads of families were for this sent to jail, including Nitschmann, who was treated with special severity. He finally escaped, fled to the Moravians at Herrnhut, became a bishop, and afterwards joined the Wesleys in 1735 in their expedition to Savannah, Georgia.

On a day when the skies were ashen from the smoke of distant wildfires, Chase Hurley kept his eyes trained on the slower-moving disaster at ground level: collapsing levees, buckling irrigation canals, water rising up over bridges and sloshing over roads.

This is the hidden disaster of California's drought. So much water has been pumped out of the ground that vast areas of the Central Valley are sinking, destroying millions of dollars in infrastructure in the gradual collapse.

Four years of drought - and the last two years of record-smashing heat - have put water in extremely short supply.

In some parts of the valley, however, the land is sinking at a rate of 2in (5cm) a month. About 1,200 square miles, roughly bounded by interstate 5 and state route 99, is collapsing into what scientists describe as a "cone of depression".

"The land around here is sinking, and as it is sinking, the bridge is going with it," said Hurley, manager of the San Luis Canal water company, on a tour of sinking infrastructure near the town of Firebaugh.

The water company, which is owned by area farmers, had recently rebuilt the levee, he said. But "because the water is hitting the bridge, they are going to have to reconstruct the bridge". Wellheads were being destroyed, because they could not maintain pressure. Dams were sinking. "I am having a hard time pushing water through my canal," Hurley said. (The Guardian UK) Read more.
