The Daily Brief

1. Kerry seeks to calm German anger at NSA reports

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday that relations with Germany have gone through a "rough patch" recently because of revelations about NSA spying, but insisted that the two countries can put the episode behind them.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, please awaken this man to how this NSA spying has insulted many of this nation's allies. Father, confront John Kerry and all the people involved in this spying and breakdown of 'good will' with other nations. We ask You that somehow they will receive Your direction of how to resolve these issues so that our nation comes back to a more 'even keel' as to diplomatic foreign relations, in Jesus' Name we pray, Amen and Amen.

"Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, put away the gods which your fathers served- Serve the Lord! - Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve - But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." (Joshua 24:14-15)

2. Bullying tactics by Kerry and Europeans fuel anti-Israel terror, stir boycott threats

Secretary of State John Kerry freely used scare tactics such as a fresh Palestinian "intifada,' and international boycotts and isolation, to cow Israel into signing on the dotted line of the framework accord he proposes to submit to Israel and the Palestinians.: Such tactics tend to backfire as self-fulfilling prophecies - witness proliferating Palestinian terror attacks and the latest Scandinavian boycott of Israel's three largest banks for the "crime" of business on the West Bank. A small spark may easily ignite a major bonfire in this overheated climate.

Read more:

- Abba Father, have mercy on our nation for these vicious bullying tactics being given to Your Land and People! As this article shares, these kind of tactics have already provoked escalating violence and retaliation against Israel. Arise, extending Your right arm and stay in the midst of Your Land, we pray in Jesus' Name, Amen and Amen.

-"I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." (Genesis 12:2-3)

3. Third Banker, Former Fed Member, "Found Dead" Inside A Week

If the stock market were already crashing then it would be simple to blame the dismally sad rash of dead bankers in the last week on that - certainly that was reflected in 1929. However, for the third time in the last week, a senior financial executive has died in what appears to be a suicide.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, something is occurring that does not appear to be reported here. Top level bankers for globally known banks are suddenly ' committing suicide' all close together. Father, we ask that You expose for the world to see what is truly going on, in the Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen.

- For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and He ponders all his paths." (Proverbs 5:21)

4. 'Obama to visit Saudi Arabia amid tensions over Iran, Syria'

President Barack Obama plans to travel to Saudi Arabia in March on a mission to smooth tensions with Washington's main Arab ally over US policy on Iran's nuclear program and the civil war in Syria, a newspaper reported. Obama is preparing to meet with King Abdullah for a summit, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing unnamed Arab officials briefed on the meetings.

Read more:

- Abba Father, as this article reports, here is another crisis as to our nation's foreign relations which needs to be repaired due to poorly chosen actions done by our nation's administration. We ask You to abide in the midst of these meetings and cause them to be according to Your plan and will, in the Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen.

- There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." (Proverbs 14:12)

5. Pentagon intelligence official says Chinese hypersonic weapon poses major challenge

China's new high-speed maneuvering warhead is a "great concern" because it appears designed for use with both nuclear and conventional Chinese military forces, a Pentagon intelligence official said Thursday. Lee Fuell, a technical intelligence specialist said, "is basically a ballistic missile-launched system that gets the payload fast and high, pitches over, dives to hypersonic speed, and then glides to the target."

Read more:

- Lord, it continues to appear that China's war making power is rising up and up. There are numerous reports of tactics and weapons being developed that can be used to cause extreme danger to other nations, both near and far. Lord, we ask that You keep Your remnant people close to You and direct them how to prepare. We pray in the Name of Jesus, Amen and Amen.

-"Lead me, O Lord, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before my face." (Psalm 5:8)

6. White House says Keystone report not final step as pressure mounts for action

A new environmental assessment from the State Department that raised no major environmental concerns on long-delayed Keystone XL pipeline isn't the last step in deciding whether the pipeline can be built, the White House said late Friday.

The long-delayed pipeline got a major boost as it cleared a major hurdle toward approval, a serious blow to environmentalists' hopes that President Obama will block the controversial project running more than 1,000 miles from Canada through the heart of the U.S.

The White House released a statement pushing back on the notion that the pipeline is now headed for speedy approval, saying Sec. of State John Kerry and other agency heads will "closely evaluate" the report in the coming weeks.

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, we are not sure all that is being discussed behind closed doors as to this pipeline, but it appears that 'delay' is a key kind of action. We ask that You expose all that is hidden so that this decision may move forward, in Jesus' Name we pray, Amen and Amen.

-"Do they not go astray who devise evil? But mercy and truth belong to those who devise good." (Proverbs 14:22)

7. Obama vows more executive action; GOP counters with actual legislation

Wrapping up a busy week for his pen and phone, President Obama on Saturday vowed to continue acting without Congress wherever possible and said he'll find new partners outside Washington to help him.

Read more:

- Abba Father, from how this article is written - what is conveyed - is an attitude of 'defiance' radiating out from our nation's executive branch, where the leaders there are stating that they want their way only, and that the laws of this nation can be dismissed to achieve what they want. Have mercy, Father, and confront these spirits of defiance, arrogance and pride, shutting them down, in Jesus' Name, Amen and Amen.

-"A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, and a man of wicked intentions is hated." (Proverbs 14:17)

8. Brown tells Californians to conserve amid drought

Gov. Jerry Brown provided some very practical guidance for Californians amid a deepening drought: Take shorter showers, turn off the water while brushing teeth, and "don't flush more than you need to."

Read more:

- Heavenly Father, we come before You alone to repent for the many sins of our nation, and ask for an abatement of the extreme droughts that are affecting large parts of our nation and it's food supply. Have mercy Father, and allow some rain to fall, to water the parched earth, in Jesus' Name, Amen and Amen.

- "The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1)

National Counterterrorism Center:

Substantial Potential for Sochi Terror Attack

Feb 01, 2014

With less than a week remaining before the start of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, senior U.S. intelligence officials have been formally making their concerns about the terrorist threat facing the games known to Congress.

During hearings this week before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Matthew Olsen, Director of the National Counterterrorism Center said that there is "a substantial potential for a terrorist attack" on soft targets in the greater Sochi area outside of the Olympic village and actual game venues.

During the same hearings, FBI Director James Comey told the committee that Sochi security "remains a big focus" of his agency. The FBI is expected to have about three dozen agents in Sochi before and during the Games, but that number is lower than their presence in either the Beijing or London Games.

Congressman Mike McCaul of Texas, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, visited the site of the games earlier this month. He called the security threat "the greatest I think I've ever seen because of the proximity of the terrorists to the Olympic village."

In particular, Congressman McCaul said al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri has called for a global jihad against the Olympics.

"There's never been this connection between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Chechen rebels before. Although, some would argue there's been support. But for the first time, Zawahiri coming out and endorsing, blessing and calling for this global jihad against the Olympics, wow, that gives me great pause."

In an interview this week, former CIA Deputy director Michael Morell urged Americans to take care- particularly when they leave the Olympic village.

"I think the venue itself is fairly safe. I'd worry about airports elsewhere in Russia, I'd worry about Western hotels elsewhere in Russia." Morell went on to say that the terrorist group threatening the Olympics is "capable, dedicated, determined" and has been around a long time.

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagle has stated that the US will have a contingency plan to get the Americans out should an attack occur. This includes two U.S. warships on station in the Black Sea as well as aircraft stationed in the region.

Over 10,000 U.S. citizens are expected to be in Sochi as spectators. The U.S. Olympic Committee said on Monday that it is sending the all-time largest athlete delegation of any nation to Sochi. This includes 230 team members spread across all 15 disciplines. (Threat Journal USA)

A note to all of our prayer partners from CHPP:

It seems that these days, the calls for intercession over looming terrorist threats are now unrelenting:

Last week, we prayed for the safety of all who were inside the Capitol Building, attending the State of the Union Address.

God heard . . . He answered . . . and all were kept safe.
Next, we launched a major call for the protection of all who went to the Super Bowl yesterday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
And again . . . God heard . . . He answered . . . and all were kept safe.
And now today, we ask intensive prayer for all who are attending the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
As we continue to pray, God will hear, we trust He will answer, and all will be kept safe, by His grace.
As we now enter into these "perilous times," let us encourage each other along the way. Let us spend time in personal prayer, in repentance, in the Word . . . keeping our own lamps full. Then, when the trumpet sounds the alarm, we shall be ready to respond, together, with "prayers that avail much." In His Grace, let us not become weary in well doing.
God will hear . . . and He will answer.
Please consider making Psalm 91 a regular component of your own devotional time: for your family, for your city, for our nation, and for His world. Amen.

THE MADISONIAN:

The week of February 3 - 7, 2014

Fellow Conservative Patriots,

GOP leaders have made it clear that they have no interest in the views expressed by their most ardent supporters and volunteers within the party base. They have voted to fund Obamacare, pass an amnesty omnibus bill, a bloated farm bill, raise the debt ceiling and pass amnesty.

This week it will be the U.S. Senate's turn to grow government by sending the Farm Bill to the President's desk and possibly extending unemployment insurance for the ninth time since the recession of 2008. Meanwhile, conservatives must remain vigilant for a rope-a-dope strategy on immigration, as U.S. House leaders plot the best way to pass amnesty.

Unemployment Insurance

Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) attempted to pass a bill extending 72 weeks of unemployment benefits several weeks ago, but was voted down by Republicans. However, a number of Republicans have agreed to the idea of yet another extension as long as the cost is paid for with spending offsets. Throughout the week, watch for a number of Republicans to sign onto a 3-month or full year extension with notional spending offsets spread out over 10 years.

Bulletin:
Senate advances farm bill

The Senate voted to end debate Monday on a $956 billion farm bill, clearing its way to to President Obama's desk after three years of struggles.

The Senate voted 72-22 to end debate and proceed on the five-year bill, which authorizing agriculture subsidies and food stamps. Final passage is expected to come after 2 p.m. on Tuesday. (The Hill)

Concerns Grow Over Domestic Attacks from Syrian al-Qaeda

Feb 01, 2014

The Senate Intelligence Committee held annual hearings this week on the nation's most significant security threats, during which the Director of National Intelligence, along with the Directors of the CIA, FBI and Defense Intelligence Agency, gave testimony as to the state of the overall threat environment facing the country. The full hearing transcript can be viewed here.

Of particular note were statements made by the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, regarding the ongoing terrorist facing the homeland.

According to Clapper, the Al Qaeda terrorist organization poses a greater challenge today than ten years ago due to the network's franchises being much more globally dispersed, combined with increased knowledge of counter terrorism and surveillance methods gained, in part, from the Edward Snowden intelligence leaks.

"I have not experienced a time when we have been beset by more crises and threats around the globe."

Clapper pointed out that Syria has become a significant location for independent or al-Q aida aligned groups to recruit, train and equip a growing number of extremists to go back to their home countries and conduct terrorist acts. The U.S. intelligence community estimates that in excess of 7,000 foreign fighters have been attracted from some 50 countries. with approximately 1700 coming from Europe.
While the State Department has not provided estimates of how many Americans they believe have gone to fight with Syrian rebels, British defense consultant IHS Jane's puts the number at a few dozen.

Security analysts fear more of those militants will tire of the battle against Syrian President Assad, whose government shows no signs of collapsing, and will take their newly acquired skills back to Europe or the U.S., where even a small bomb in a shopping mall can grab much greater headlines than the now-routine reports of car bombs in Syrian cities.

Did Kerry Threaten Israel?

Did Kerry Threaten Israel?

Secretary of State John Kerry is under fire for public comments he made at the annual Munich Security Conference this weekend. When asked about the Middle East peace process, Kerry said:

"For Israel, the stakes are also enormously high. Do they want a failure that then begs whatever may come in the form of a response from disappointed Palestinians and the Arab community? . . . and you see for Israel there's an increasing de-legitimization campaign that has been building up. People are very sensitive to it. There are talks of boycotts and other kinds of things. Are we all going to be better with all of that?"

Kerry's public comments are a blank check for Israel bashers around the world. He practically invited violence and misguided, anti-Semitic attempts to de-legitimize Israel. And Israeli officials are furious, as they should be.

Yuval Steinitz, Israeli Minister of Intelligence, said, "The things Kerry said are hurtful . . . and they are intolerable. Israel cannot be expected to negotiate with a gun to its head."

Naftali Bennett, Minister of Industry, Trade and Labor, blasted Kerry as a mouthpiece for anti-Semitism, saying, "We expect of our friends in the world to stand by our side against the attempts to impose an anti-Semitic boycott on Israel, and not to be their mouthpiece."

Just think of what has happened in recent years. President Bush and, to some extent, Bill Clinton would regularly remind our adversary Iran that if it kept sponsoring terrorism, continued its march toward nuclear weapons and went on calling for a second Holocaust, the world community would boycott and put more sanctions on Iran. Obama has weakened those sanctions and his Secretary of State appears instead to be making threats to boycott and isolate Israel.

I repeat what I have written previously: The president of the United States is now the chief lobbyist and apologist for the Islamic Republic of Iran. And Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, is now chief lobbyist for the values of the free world. (Gary Bauer)

Prayercast for the Olympics | Russia

Prayercast for the Olympics | Russia

With the Winter Olympics beginning in less than a week, Russia and its preparations to host this global event are in the spotlight. Severe terrorist threats have led to one of the biggest security operations in Olympic history. After the recent bombings in Volgograd claimed 34 lives, these threats are not being taken lightly. With Russia's influence in multiple current conflicts -- Syria, Ukraine, Iran, etc. -- this nation has the world's attention.

But beneath this powerful facade is a dark reality. Abortion and alcoholism rates are among the highest in the world. HIV/AIDS ravages its people, drug addictions hold many captive, and over 600,000 children are without a home. The Russian people's future does not lie in governmental power but in the hands of the Almighty God. He alone holds the answers. In Him alone is their hope and salvation. Together let's watch and pray,

Signs and Wonders:

The Recent and Troubled History of Papal Peace Doves

During a Sunday morning service at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, Pope Francis and two children released white doves as a peace gesture for Ukraine, which is currently beset by violence and civil unrest. The doves were immediately attacked by two other birds.

"As tens of thousands of people watched in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, a seagull and a large black crow swept down on the doves right after they were set free from an open window of the Apostolic Palace."

. . . While the outcome of Sunday's dove attack remains unknown, last year, Pope Benedict XVI's ceremonial dove release for victims of the Holocaust was marred when a seagull also attacked a dove and pinned it against a windowpane.

The year before, two doves were released in another ceremonial flourish for World Leprosy Day. One bird perched on the railing beside the Pope and refused to move. When a second dove was released, it immediately flew back into the Pope's apartment.

To his credit, Pope Benedict seemed to shout "Mamma Mia" in surprise. (Wired.com) Read more.

"And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near."
