The Daily Brief - Friday, October 28, 2011

"Occupy till I come." (Luke 19:13b)

The Daily Brief

1. 'Rogue websites' bill introduced in US House - AFP

US lawmakers introduced a bill on Wednesday that would give US authorities more tools to crack down on websites accused of piracy of movies, television shows and music and the sale of counterfeit goods.

- Father, we ask that wisdom be given to the members of the House of Representatives as they seek to stop illegal, harmful, cyber crimes on the internet, and at the same time preserve the freedom and rights of those citizens not involved in illegal activity. As we see a "crackdown" on crime, we also see the threat of invading the privacy of those not committing crimes. We ask that safeguards be put in place to separate the criminals and those that are law-abiding citizens. Amen.

- "The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment." (2 Peter 2:9)

2. Napolitano: Jailed Illegals Will Get Phone Number to Report Civil Rights Violations - CNS News

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told the House Judiciary Committee in written testimony submitted Wednesday that illegal aliens taken into custody by local law enforcement and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement will be given a phone number to call if they believe their civil rights have been violated.

- Abba, have we gone too far in trying to "please" those who are doing wrong? Why are we trying so hard to treat illegal aliens as if they have the same rights of our citizens who are obeying the laws? Lord, we know this is a difficult problem, in that, many people from other lands want to come to this country to live - where they can enjoy the benefits of being Americans. We ask that You would help them pursue immigration and citizenship legally, and responsibly. We do thank You that they can pursue appeals if they believe they are being falsely arrested and deported, and thereby become law-abiding citizens of this Country.

- " Let all things be done decently and in order." (I Corinthians 14:40)

3. Teachers' Union Offered Grant to Create 'Activists' Out Of 1st & 2nd Graders - The Blaze - (NEA)

The National Education Association (NEA), the largest labor union in the country, offered a $5,000 Learning and Leadership Grant to two Wisconsin teachers who intended to use the funds to "help first and second grade students" become "activists." The grant description is no longer available on the NEA Foundation website as Muskego-Norway Superintendent declined to accept the grant given its dubious language and intent.

- Father, we ask that tax-payer funds not be used to turn our children into "activists", or worse yet, "anarchists". We do want our children to be aware socially, and otherwise, of the very real issues they will face as adults, and to learn to think for themselves. However, first and second graders are only 6 or 7 years old. We know this is an impressionable time of their lives, and we want to teach them about You, Lord. You alone are God, and the foundation for everything else that matters in life. We do not want our children to be taught to "rebel" and be dissatisfied. We thank You these funds were rejected. We pray that You will protect our children from those who wish to indoctrinate them for their own personal agenda.

-"Jesus our Lord, through His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue." (2 Peter 13)

4. 76 Percent Dissatisfied With Direction of Country - Fox News

Three-quarters of American voters -- 76 percent -- are dissatisfied with how things are going in the country, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday. That's up from 69 percent who felt that way in April, and 61 percent at the beginning of the year.

- Lord, we ask for wisdom and discernment among our citizenry. We ask that those who are displeased with the direction our Country is moving in, would have the courage to vote their convictions for the person of Your choice to govern our Land, in this next election. We, as Your children, do humbly repent of our sins, individually and nationally, and call upon Your mercy and grace, to save our great nation, and turn it back to the Biblical foundations, established by our founding fathers. Lord, Heal our Land! Amen!

- "If My people, who are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land!" (2 Chronicles 7:14)

5. US considers unusual attack helicopter deal for Turkey - Jerusalem Post

The Obama administration is consulting Congress on an unusual proposal to transfer US Marine Corps attack helicopters to Turkey, US officials said on Thursday, as Ankara tries to exact revenge for a major attack by Kurdish separatists. Turkey, a NATO ally, has been seeking AH-1 SuperCobra helicopters to replace those lost in its long struggle against separatist rebels from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK. The officials declined to be identified because of the matter's sensitivity and because they were not authorized to speak on the record. The idea to take weapons from the US arsenal was rare, they said.

The proposal has been held up amid lawmakers' questions about increasingly distant relations between Muslim-majority Turkey and Israel, a key US ally, among other matters.

- Abba, Father, we come to You humbly, asking that those who make these decisions on behalf of our nation, would be sensitive to Your voice, Your direction, Your wisdom, and Your discernment in making this decision. We know that Turkey and Israel seem to be "at odds" with one another right now. We do thank You that Israel has offered aid to Turkey in assisting with the aftermath of Turkey's recent earthquake, and that Turkey has accepted their offer. We ask that this will help heal their strained relationship. Lord, You know the "end from the beginning", and so we ask that these helicopters would not be given to Turkey, if they would ultimately be used against Your people and Your Land of Israel. May Your will be done in this situation. Amen.

- "Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly." (Proverbs 2:5-7)

The Good News Corner:

Global Men's Summit Seeks to Reverse Financial Crisis by Calling Men
to Live Lives of Integrity

In the midst of headlines detailing the latest financial downturn and the weakening of the world's economic integrity, one vital statistic has gone unreported:

Single-parent households are nearly twice as likely to be living in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Recognizing that a family is financially and emotionally strongest when both a father and mother are present, the Christian Men's Network announced that its biannual Lions Roar 2011 Global Summit-November 3-5, 2011 in Dallas, Texas-would focus on encouraging men to become courageous leaders at home and in business.

"Men of integrity make strong families, strong families make strong churches and strong churches transform nations," said Pastor Paul Cole, president of Christian Men's Network, the men's organization founded in 1977 by Edwin Louis Cole, author of the million-selling book Maximized Manhood, now considered a classic.

"Ultimately, the key to reversing the financial crisis starts with men who choose to live their lives with integrity. When men make that courageous choice to lead their families as Christ led the Church, things will change for the better," Cole said.

The results from this Summit will be action steps for 86,000 leaders currently connected by CMN in 138 nations. Delegates from over 20 nations will gather for three days with pastors of some of the largest churches in the world who have "majored in men." Influential leaders from numerous men's movements will lead group discussions, present initiatives and set agendas for international cooperation and strategic results.

Unique to this event, "roundtable" talks led by key leaders will spark dialogue and build fellowship, providing an exchange of ideas especially related to cultural shifts and reaching men for Christ. Delegates will be equipped with tools for successful leadership, building momentum in men's ministries, growing strong churches and becoming influential culture shapers.

The evening sessions are for men and women. Day sessions are for men only. Special ladies' meetings will be held during the day as well. (Source: Christian Men's Network)

"Sweet Hour of Prayer!" Sung by George B. Shea

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father's throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter's snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
