PRAYER ALERT: JAPAN
March 12, 2011

"For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it [is] a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry [land]; And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts." (Haggai 2:6,7)

JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI

Published by WIN International Network

An 8.9 earthquake struck Japan on Thursday, March 10, resulting in a 23-foot tsunami that killed hundreds of people. Boats, cars, and entire homes were swept out to sea.

One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded hit northeastern Japan on March 11. Damage is said to be extensive. The quake also generated a 23-foot tsunami that slammed into the eastern coast of Japan and reached as far as the Pacific coast of North America. Houses, vehicles and people were swept out to sea.

The disaster left millions without power. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people were killed. Fires erupted and continued to burn, and areas near nuclear reactors were evacuated.

"We don't even know the extent of the damage," a disaster management official said. "Roads were badly damaged and cut off as the tsunami washed away debris, cars and many other things."

Prime Minister Naoto Kan stated at a news conference that the earthquake "caused major damage in a broad area in northern Japan."

From CHPP:

We are also watching news of both nuclear reactors now heading toward meltdown and endangering thousands of Japanese residents.

From Fox News:

Japan's nuclear agency says up to 160 people may have been exposed to radiation after explosion at nuclear power plant which caused its cooling system to fail, as nearly 170,000 people were evacuated from the areas around two troubled plants.

Cooling systems failed at a second nuclear reactor on Japan's devastated coast Sunday, hours after an explosion at a nearby unit made leaking radiation, or even outright meltdown, the central threat to the country following a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami.

The Japanese government said radiation emanating from the plant appeared to have decreased after Saturday's blast, which produced a cloud of white smoke that obscured the complex. But the danger was grave enough that officials pumped seawater into the reactor to avoid disaster and moved 170,000 people from the area.

Quake Moves Island; Tilts Earth's Axis

(CNN) -- The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by 8 feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.

"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (8 feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters).
