The Citizen's of the Earth summit held in Paris, France ended Saturday. The main thrust was a call for a powerful international environment agency recognized by all governments that will address the challenges of climate change. The summit issued the "Paris Appeal," which says, "We hope to establish a new world environmental organization which goes along the lines with the World Health Organization. It should be more powerful and recognized by the whole world." The proposal is for a stronger and more genuine global environment organization under the United Nations. Its primary function would be to promote technologies that protect the world's eco- systems and supporting the implementation of world environmental policies.
French President Jacques Chirac echoed the proposal and forwarded the suggestion of replacing the existing U.N. Environment Program with a powerful agency in order to strengthen international control over the environment. Representatives from over 40 countries pledged support for his proposal. At least 200 representatives from different countries, environmental groups and business leaders participated in the two-day Citizen of the Earth summit.
For his part, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the challenge of climate change is a top priority as chief of the world body. Ban said, "Environmental problem is a global issue. It has threatened our efforts in maintaining world peace and security. Only coordinated international actions could tackle the problem."
