Judge: Banks Must Release Trump Records

Federal judge rules banks must comply with subpoenas
for Trump financial records

Wednesday, May 22, 2019

A federal judge in New York ruled Wednesday that two banks that did business with President Trump must comply with congressional subpoenas seeking access to his financial records.

The House Financial Services and Intelligence committees have requested the documents from Deutsche Bank and Capital One to investigate possible "foreign influence in the U.S. political process."

"We remain committed to providing appropriate information to all authorized investigations and will abide by a court order regarding such investigations," Deutsche Bank said in a statement to Fox News after the ruling.

After an hour of oral arguments, U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos ruled the subpoenas have "a legitimate legislative purpose" and ruled that Trump was unlikely to prevail in a lawsuit to quash the requests.

Trump's lawyers had asked the judge to temporarily block Congress from gaining access to the records. They said it was a "safe bet" they would appeal the decision.

"Congress can issue a subpoena on any matter, at any time, for any reason, to any person, and there is basically nothing a federal court can do about it," Trump's lawyers said.

"We are pleased with Judge Ramos' decision. Congress' authority to conduct relevant oversight has been repeatedly challenged by this Administration," House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., responded.

"The decision made in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York today is a victory for the role of Congress as a co-equal branch of government and for the important work our Committees are doing in protecting and serving the interests of the American public."

Lawyers for the Financial Services and House Intelligence committees said Trump's efforts to block the subpoenas were "flatly inconsistent with nearly a century of Supreme Court precedent," according to a submission before Wednesday's hearing.

Some congressional Republicans have called the subpoenas an abuse of authority and blasted the Trump-focused investigations.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, called the inquiry into Mazars USA "an unprecedented abuse of the Committee's subpoena authority to target and expose the private financial information of the President of the United States." (Fox News)Read more.

- Father God, we are grieved that Rep. Waters' committee moved so quickly to obtain these records . . . even before the President's lawyers were able to appeal this ruling to the Supreme Court, which is their constitutional right. We are grieved, too, that this "witch hunt" has now continued, unrelentingly, against the President of the United States, and we ask that You forgive U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos for his actions.

We rest now in the calm assurance that the House Financial Services and Intelligence Committees will, indeed, find nothing in these records to be questioned, and we ask for Your great mantle of peace to fall upon the shoulders of our dear President as he endures this season of affliction. We rest this case in the High Court of Heaven. In Your Name we offer this prayer, amen.

- "The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous." (Proverbs 15:29)

Classified Documents Released

Trump gives AG Barr authority to declassify documents related to 2016 campaign surveillance

President Trump on Thursday night issued a memo giving Attorney General William Barr the authority to declassify any documents related to surveillance of the Trump campaign in 2016.

Trump also ordered the intelligence community to cooperate with Barr. The memo read: "The heads of elements of the intelligence community . . . and the heads of each department or agency that includes an element of the intelligence community shall promptly provide such assistance and information as the Attorney General may request in connection with that review."

"Today, at the request and recommendation of the Attorney General of the United States, President Donald J. Trump directed the intelligence community to quickly and fully cooperate with the Attorney General's investigation into surveillance activities during the 2016 Presidential election," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

"The Attorney General has also been delegated full and complete authority to declassify information pertaining to this investigation, in accordance with the long-established standards for handling classified information. Today's action will help ensure that all Americans learn the truth about the events that occurred, and the actions that were taken, during the last Presidential election and will restore confidence in our public institutions." (Fox News) Read more.

- Father, we praise You that the time has come for all the facts related to the possible spying into President Trump's 2016 campaign can now be brought to light. We ask for a fair and impartial review of these documents and for justice to be rendered to any guilty parties accordingly. In Your Name, amen.
- "Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just . . ." (Psalm 7:9)

"Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:32)

"For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light." (Mark 4:22)

Impeachment and the Constitution

Alan Dershowitz: Congress is not above the law when it comes to impeachment - Don't weaponize the Constitution

A Commentary

The mantra invoked by those Democrats who are seeking to impeach President Trump is that "no one is above the law." That, of course, is true, but it is as applicable to Congress as it is to the president. Those members of Congress who are seeking to impeach the president, even though he has not committed any of the specified impeachable offenses set out in the Constitution, are themselves seeking to go above the law.

All branches of government are bound by the law. Members of Congress, presidents, justices and judges must all operate within the law. All take an oath to support the Constitution, not to rewrite it for partisan advantage.

It is the law that exempts presidents from being prosecuted or impeached for carrying out their constitutional authority under Article 2. The same Constitution precludes members of Congress from being prosecuted for most actions taken while on the floor of the House and Senate or on the way to performing their functions.

. . . The framers of the Constitution considered broadening the criteria for impeachment to include maladministration in office. But this proposal was soundly rejected, on the ground that it would give Congress too much power to control the president. The time has come to stop weaponizing the Constitution and our legal system for partisan advantage.

Impeachment would be a lawless response to undertake, as is the use of partisan committees to obtain an electoral advantage.

Yet Democrats who are now seeking to impeach the president, despite the absence of impeachable offenses, are trying to do precisely what the framers of the Constitution forbade them from doing: exercising control over a president that is not authorized in the Constitution itself.

Consider, for example, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., who has said the following: "Impeachment is about whatever the Congress says it is. There is no law that dictates impeachment."

It is she, and other like-minded members of Congress, who are claiming the right to be above the law. That is a dangerous claim whether made by a president or by a member of Congress.

The framers of the Constitution did not want a weak president subject to the political control of Congress. Members of the Constitutional Convention explicitly expressed that view in rejecting criteria for impeachment short of criminal conduct. In the absence of the specified criminal conduct, the remedy for a non-impeachable president lies with the voters, not Congress.

- Father, we thank You for our Constitution. We pray that, in the days ahead as the debates continue over documents now being released, that those in authority would move with wise and measured actions. May all comments be based upon our law, and upon nothing else. We ask in Your name, amen.

- "Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set." (Proverbs 22:28)

Franklin Graham: A Call to Prayer for President Trump

FRANKLIN GRAHAM WANTS YOU TO JOIN HIM TO PRAY FOR THE PRESIDENT

Sunday, June 2nd

A message to you from Franklin Graham . . .

Dear Friend,

I am asking you to sign on and help promote a special Day of Prayer for our President, Donald J. Trump, on Sunday, June 2.

The onslaught from the President's enemies is unbelievable. In the history of our country, no president has been attacked as he has. The lies and the deceptions rage on.

It is my hope that churches, ministries, and individuals across this country will promote and participate in this special prayer focus on June 2. I want the President to know, and to feel, and to understand that the prayers of millions of people are behind him.

My prayer is that President Trump will know and understand the power of God in a new way and that he will seek His face as he leads this nation to greatness with God's help.

The Bible says, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places" (Ephesians 6:12).

Would you join in this special prayer initiative?

Franklin Graham

Suggested decree:

"We . . . are calling for June 2 to be a special Day of Prayer for the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, that God would protect, strengthen, embolden, and direct him.

We believe our nation is at a crossroads, at a dangerous precipice. The only one who can fix our nation's problems is God Himself, and we pray that God will bless our President and our nation for His glory."

> > > Please forward this alert on to your own prayer networks, too. Thank you.

God or communism, which will it be?

My son is a graduate of one of the most prestigious conservative scholarship programs in America. He knows the ins and outs of political systems and their histories of failures and successes. He is able to theorize about how economics impacts social strata. He understands the value of capitalism over communism. We talk often about the current coup attempt by the radical left and the complexity of the issues fueling it. He hears from me repeatedly that it is all inspired by Communist doctrine. He says his generation generally doesn't understand the danger. They didn't grow up under the communist threat. But hearing from one who did, as with the following Daily Jot reader, may remind us all of what we have standing before us.

He writes: "Many of us growing up in the late 50s and early 60s have seen the shoe pounding declaration given while addressing Westerners at the embassy on November 18, 1956, in the presence of Polish Communist statesman Władysław Gomułka, First Secretary Khrushchev said: "About the capitalist states, it doesn't depend on you whether or not we exist. If you don't like us, don't accept our invitations, and don't invite us to come to see you. Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you!" What Khrushchev meant was not that Russia will bury you, but Marxism will bury you. Today an ill wind blows across this land and it carries with it a wasting disease that has settled down in every state in this nation and has grown from a seed to a threat so looming every American is now at risk.
"This disease is Marxism and the ill wind that blows it from sea to shining sea. This wasting disease is carried into our very midst by multiple carriers ranging from College and University professors and teachers, to Public School teachers, to Federal Judges, to giants among our economic businesses, to Hollywood movies and TV programs and, of course, the National Socialist News Media and the DNC. The ideology of Marxism should never have been allowed within our borders in the first place because it is the antithesis of everything our Constitution stands for . . . These Marxists have but one creed and that is the destruction of this nation and the implementation of a Marxist Socialist State over which they will set as lords, guardians and enforcers.
"The Marxist is an atheist, a God-hater, and by that they despise anything that is right and good and because of that one fact they are willing to do and to say any and everything needed in order to destroy us. There is no thought that they are not willing to entertain and no deed that they are not willing to do should that deed become necessary and the opportunity present itself." Acts 5:29 says, " . . . We ought to follow God rather than men." We live in a country where we are free to follow God, but the communists want to take that freedom away, destroy any semblance of godly allegiance, and oppress society with the burdens of their own lordship, forcing all to follow them rather than God. As we enter Memorial Day weekend, let us remember those who laid their lives on the line that we may have the freedom to follow God rather than men.

Have a blessed and powerful day,

Headlines of darkness

Each morning before writing The Daily Jot, I peruse the headlines to get an idea of what to write. Some of the stuff that is going on looks like remnants of a satirical magazine from the 1970s, like Mad or Cracked. Problem is, these are real and people actually are making these headlines and other people are believing them. I can see how so many people are angry because the headlines are angry. Anger begets anger. Other headlines are just stupid-news not even worthy of coverage. Still others are headlines from stories that make no sense, falling somewhere between fake news and outright personal attacks. If you didn't have Christ in your life, you may well be full of fear, anxiety, and depression. Read on if you dare.

One of the most humorous headlines this morning is: "Biden campaign pitch: Make America normal again." Really? His idea of normal is abortion on demand with no restrictions, men saying they are women and using women's restrooms and playing women's sports, smelling women's hair and hugging them whether they want him to or not, using his position to help his son bilk China out of millions, saying that his biggest climate change proposal is to get rid of Donald Trump. Yep, that's Democratic frontrunner for President Joe Biden, wanting to make America normal again. He's a 76 year old white guy-isn't his Party the one that hates white privilege and believes old white men are the problem of society? He's the frontrunner of the Democratic Party hypocrisy machine.

Oh, then there are those who hate, and just want to call everyone else haters. How about these headlines: "CBS hosts laugh at dumping milkshakes on "right wing" politicians," "Actress: White Women complicit in abortion laws causing Black women to die," "Pelosi cover-up remark seemed to unravel Trump psychologically, "Democrat: Trump Administration murdering children," "Pelosi: Anti-abortion laws about white guys "fear" of women," "Abortion activists scream obscenities at pro-life teen," "New York Times: Pregnancy kills. Abortion saves," "States enacting abortion bans thought it OK to rape slaves,""NYC Department of Education: 'Individualism' Is 'White Supremacy Culture'." These are just from this morning.

These are the headlines of darkness. They reflect dark hearts and dark intentions. If you ponder them too long, they will have a dark impact on you. They are examples of the times in which we live. They are the product of the lights of the world being hidden under a basket-or, if you will, inside the four walls and the roof of churches across America. Yes, I'm big on getting out and engaging with people, shining that light even if it is uncomfortable. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Christ said in Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." That's the answer to headlines of darkness.

Have a blessed and powerful day,

The Daily Jot Staff

Our Weekly Prayer Focus

Our Weekly Prayer Focus

For the week of May 26 - June 1, 2019

Posted by the National Prayer Embassy

Memorial Day weekend in America is an annual reminder to pray for all our military forces worldwide, including healing of our wounded troops, Holy Ghost comfort for surviving family members and friends of deceased troops, protection for our current troops, wisdom for our leaders, and the resolution of the missing in action and prisoner of war issues. On our weekly prayer tour of Washington, D.C. on the Sunday morning before Memorial Day each year we notice the "Rolling Thunder" motorcycle procession forming in the North parking lot of the Pentagon and preparing for a memorial service at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, with thousands of bikers, many flying the U.S. and MIA/POW flags, and Christian ministries like "Bikers for Christ" and "Point Man Ministries" offering prayer and gospel resources.

Let's pray about all this today:

"Father God, in the name of Jesus we thank You for helping our militaryforces to be ministers of God for the good of all people, a terror to evildoers and a praise and protection to the righteous. We thank You, Lord, for gospel outreach among all missionaries in uniform, being even better at spiritual warfare than they are at natural warfare, while the best in the world at natural warfare, but giving themselves as much as possible to praise, worship, prayer, bible study and charitable service to the people of lands where they are stationed. We thank You, Lord, for total healing for our wounded troops and veterans, Holy Ghost comfort for surviving family members and friends of deceased troops and veteran's protection for our current troops, wisdom for our leaders and the total resolution of missing in action and prisoner of war issues, in Jesus' name. Amen!"
