The Daily Brief - Wednesday, June 10, 2009

"Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand." (James 5:8)

Today's Daily Brief

1. Deadly Museum Shooting - AP

Gunman Opens Fire Inside Holocaust Museum, Kills Security Guard

A gunman opened fire inside the Holocaust Memorial Museum in the nation's capital Wednesday, shooting and killing a security guard before other officers returned fire and shot the assailant, officials said.

The museum released a statement late Wednesday afternoon confirming that 39-year-old Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns had died of his injuries. He had served on the museum's security staff for six years.

"There are no words to express our grief and shock over today's events," the statement said, adding that the museum would remain closed Thursday in his honor.

• Tonight, let's all pause and say a prayer for the family of Officer Tyrone Johns, who has died in the line of duty. May our Lord visit them with His grace in their time of grief. Pray, too, that all information about the shooter be revealed to those in authority -- in particular, whether he was a "lone gunman" or if he is working with others. Pray.

• (For the family) "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)

(For the authorities) "For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open." (Mark 4:22)

2. Alternative medicine meets mainstream hospitals - AP

Tens of millions of Americans take dietary supplements - vitamins, minerals and herbs, ranging from ginseng and selenium to fish oil and zinc, said Steven Mister, president of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, an industry trade group. In fact, some are widely recommended by doctors - prenatal vitamins for pregnant women, calcium for older women at risk of osteoporosis, and fish oil for some heart patients, for example. These uses are generally thought to be safe, although independent testing has found quality problems and occasional safety concerns with specific products, such as too much or too little of a vitamin.

• Lord, we pray that doctors and researchers will see the value of these natural medicines which many times are safer and with less side-effects. We pray there will not be a prejudice against natural medicines.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. (John 16:13)

3. Speculation spikes gas prices, spurs legislation - Fox News

But "as oil prices rise, so will big oil companies' profits, creating more importance to pass the legislation," said Daniel J. Weiss, director of climate strategy at the liberal Center for America Progress. Mr. Weiss added that higher oil and gas prices will soon return to the forefront of the climate and energy debate, helping to push legislation through the House. At the same time, higher oil and gas prices are likely to slow the economy's eventual revival. Energy Secretary Steven Chu warned last week that gasoline prices in the $3-a-gallon range could require the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to increase production to stabilize the economy. "There's no question that increasing oil prices slow the economy because it takes more money out of people's pockets," Mr. Felmy said. He added that a $10 increase per barrel of oil subtracts 0.5 percent from gross domestic product.

• As some lawmakers are outraged due to the fact that oil on our own soil is not readily available to our people, pray that more leaders will cry out for justice concerning the resources our Father created for His people and His purposes. Intercede for insight and godly wisdom in legislation being prepared, reviewed and passed, that our economy will be spurred, leaning toward the benefit of the American people and not big oil company profiteers.

And you shall do what is right and good in the sight of the Lord, that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land of which the Lord swore to your fathers, to cast out all your enemies from before you, as the Lord has spoken. ( Deuteronomy 6:18-19)

4. Gingrich: Christians 'Surrounded by Paganism' - Worthy News

Christians in the U.S. today are "surrounded by paganism" and need to get involved in politics to preserve religion in American life, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich declared.

Gingrich spoke at a "Rediscovering God in America" forum at a church in Virginia Beach, Va., on Friday, and said: "I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history. We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism."

Gingrich and other speakers, including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, pointed to the availability of abortion, the spread of gay rights, and attempts to remove religion from school history books as threats to Christian values.

• Father, revive our hearts and help us to find You again in American life. We desire deeply to remember the goodness You have shown to us throughout the years and to 'show and tell' it to our children, our loved ones, and our neighbors. Father, receive glory for Your awesome ways toward the sons of men in this country. Keep us on Your righteous path, as Your Son has blazed a trail for us to follow. Please pray, as we, for the asking, have been given the heathen for our inheritance, that we would be found faithful, heeding the voice of our God, following His way in all things. Ask the Lord of Hosts for hearts to turn and become reacquainted with their God. Cry, "Mercy", as you intercede for those who are discovering God for the first time, that they will experience their Father's heart and know the awesome price that was paid by His dear Son for their redemption and a life more abundant, to include everlasting life.

Sow righteousness for yourselves and reap faithful love; break up your untilled ground. It is time to seek the Lord until He comes and sends righteousness on you like the rain. (Hosea 10:12)

5. Exclusive: Meet America's First Muslim: It's a Real Scream - Family Security Matters

In his speech before the University of Cairo, President Barack Obama said that Islam "has always been part of America's story," adding that Muslims have "enriched" the United States since the time of its founding. Mr. Obama's statement raises a question that few historians, let alone elected officials, have raised in the past. Who was the first American Muslim?

Some maintain that this forgotten figure was a Moorish slave who was transported to South Carolina in 1587. This is problematic, since not one scintilla of historical evidence can be used to support this assertion. Historical evidence, however, does exist to show that Ayuiba Suleiman Diallo and Omar ibn Said were transported to the New World as slaves in 1731. But this evidence also shows that these slaves were returned to Africa in 1734.

A few Muslim writers maintain that America's first Muslim was a Native American named Mahomet. The basis of this claim is that the name of Mahomet bears a resemblance to the name of the Prophet of Allah. The same argument, of course, could be employed to establish that Mahomet was a Mahican or a Mahayana.

Islam did not arrive in the New World with a boatload of black slaves or Muslim missionaries. It did not emerge from the cotton fields or the halls of ivy. Islam made its first appearance in the form of Timothy Drew, not a subject of Black History Month or a PBS documentary, nor that of a critical biography, but an African-American conman and two-bit snake oil salesman, who popped up on a street corner in Newark, New Jersey circa 1910 as the "Savior Prophet of Allah."

• Father, just as every nation is entitled to it's heritage, that it's foregoers legacies be preserved with integrity, so America has that same right. Pray for Mr. Obama as we do not know why he is perjuring himself before the nations of the world. Ask the Father to expose each and every out and out lie and instill a holy, just sense of the birthright and legitimacy of the United States of America's rich history with an open and true knowledge of our Forefathers, and not allow a ludicrous rewrite of our American Heritage for personal gain. Intercede that every offense of this nature against God, His country, and His people will only further the purposes of the One, true God.

Whoever causes the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession. (Proverbs 28:8)

6. Biden Tells Law Enforcement Groups Sotomayor 'Has Your Back' - Fox News

Vice President Joe Biden may have crossed the line when he assured national law enforcement groups Monday that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor "has your back."

The remark quickly stirred criticism in the legal world, since Biden was making a pledge that a fair and objective justice would not necessarily be able to keep.

• Father, please forgive Mr. Biden for he knows not what he does. Pray that false and illegal promises would not be a part of our justice system. Ask the Father for honor to come out of the mouth of the Vice President, not bribery and enticement. Intercede for this process, that every detail in nominating one for the Supreme Court is addressed, that our country can feel safe about it, and our Constitution is upheld.

They make many promises, take false oaths and make agreements; therefore lawsuits spring up like poisonous weeds in a plowed field. (Hosea 10:4)

7. Russia has info on North Korea missile launch plan: report - Cross Action News

"We have certain information on the type and characteristics of the rocket. However there is no precise information on the timing of its launch," the source in Russia's General Staff told Interfax. He added that Russia would be monitoring the launch. It was unclear whether he was referring to a short- or long-range missile. Separately, the ITAR-TASS news agency quoted a source in the Russian foreign ministry as saying: "Judging by everything, a launch will take place. There are signs that preparations for this are underway."

North Korea has launched a series of short-range missiles since carrying out a nuclear test on May 25. US and South Korean officials have said there are signs that the reclusive Communist state may also be preparing to test-fire a long-range missile. Tensions have been running high since Pyongyang launched a long-range rocket in April, tested a nuclear bomb in May, then launched a series of short-range missiles and renounced the truce that ended the Korean War in 1953.

Russia has a short border with North Korea and is part of the six-party negotiations aimed at convincing the country's isolated Communist regime to give up its nuclear program.

• Pray as the threat of nuclear bombs and long-range missiles endeavor to strike fear in the heart of so many, that leaders with the courage of Joshua and the obedient heart of Moses would rise up to put this matter to rest under the wisdom and the foreknowledge of God. Press in for the fear of the Lord with sound judgment to fall on governments of all endangered countries. Intercede for the millions of lost souls in this region of the world. Ask the Father for His end-time game plan for them, trusting that before evil makes it's move, His will be done.

But whoever listens to me will dwell safely, And will be secure, without fear of evil. (Proverbs 1:33)

The Middle East in Focus

This week, for all the headlines cited below, please join us in proclaiming THIS DECREE:

Beautiful in elevation, the joy of the whole earth, is Mont Zion in the far north, the city of the great King. (Psalm 48:2)

1. Hamas leader: Israeli settlement freeze essential - Ynet News

The top leader of the terrorist Hamas group said Tuesday that President Barack Obama's pressure on Israel to freeze construction in West Bank settlements was an essential step toward restarting peace efforts.

2. Israel tells Mitchell it won't halt natural growth in settlements - Jerusalem Post

While outwardly US envoy George Mitchell tried to downplay tensions between Washington and Jerusalem, the settlement construction issue continued to be a central source of contention when Mitchell met with Israel's leaders on Tuesday.

3. Barak: Future IDF ops will be 'broader' - Jerusalem Post

The army's future campaigns will be "wider in scope" and present more dangers than January's Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned a group of soon-to-be IDF officers following an extensive military drill held in the South on Tuesday.

4. Palestinians: Navy opens fire on 2 boats off Gaza coast, IDF enters Strip - Jerusalem Post

Navy boats fired shots at two Palestinian fishing boats off the southern Gaza coast on Tuesday morning, according to Palestinian media reports.

Winds of Change?

I've noted in recent reports how voters in the European elections punished socialist parties for their leftwing policies that have failed to adequately address the economic crisis or growing concerns about illegal immigration and Islamofascism. Well, here in the United States the winds of change may be blowing too.

In last night's gubernatorial primary in Virginia, Democrats selected the more moderate of three candidates, even though he has no significant political base. And his victory wasn't just a narrow win in a divided, three-way race - he captured nearly 50% of the vote. It was a rout for the liberals! One of the defeated candidates was Terry McAuliffe, a former chairman of the Democrat National Committee and the top Clinton money man. His loss is a yet another nail in the coffin of the Clinton dynasty.

Meanwhile, in the Empire State, two Hispanic state senators switched parties from Democrat to Republican to give the GOP control of the state's upper chamber. Switching from Democrat to Republican in the state of New York in the age of Obama is a pretty bold move. Not surprisingly, Democrats threw a temper tantrum. They responded by shutting off the power, cutting internet service and locking the doors.

Now, they are threatening lawsuits. For what? Are they going to ask a judge to issue an injunction against party switches? Are they going to compel lawmakers to affiliate with the Democrat Party whether they want to or not? Forcing people to join "the party" is what tyrannical dictators do. Stay tuned . . . this New York drama promises to be very entertaining! (Gary Bauer; End-of-Day; 6/10/09)

"Them Jews"

Remember Pastor Jeremiah Wright? He was Barack Obama's pastor for many years, during which time he preached a hateful mixture of black liberation theology and America-bashing, periodically spiced up with old-fashioned anti-Semitism. Even though Obama referred to him as his mentor and spiritual guide, he eventually distanced himself from Wright when the reverend's rantings threatened to derail Obama's presidential campaign.

Well, Wright is back in the news. Asked if he has recently spoken to the president and former parishioner, Wright said, "Them Jews aren't going to let me talk to him." "Them Jews" apparently was a reference to several top aides to Obama, including Rahm Emanuel, the White House Chief of Staff. Wright, like most anti-Semites, is obsessed with Jews and sees a Jewish conspiracy everywhere. The question remains the same as it was in 2008: How could Barack Obama sit in Wright's church with his wife and children Sunday after Sunday without dissenting or leaving in disgust? Surely he didn't agree with those rants.

Quite frankly, over the last two weeks President Obama has sounded almost like Reverend Wright. As Obama has started his efforts to find "peace" in the Middle East, he has repeatedly pointed to those whom Wright calls "them Jews" living in Judea and Samaria as the main roadblock to peace. President Barack Hussein Obama seems less troubled by "them Islamofascists" who won't be satisfied until Israel is gone and America is driven out of the Middle East. (Gary Bauer; End-of-Day; 6/10/09)

Christian-in-Chief?

People have reason to be confused over President Obama's faith. From Notre Dame's commencement to Cairo's kumbaya, the President has mastered the religious rhetoric without letting it influence his record. The sincerity of the walk behind the President's talk was the topic of my morning interview on "Fox and Friends" (which you can view here, or by logging on to www.frc.org). Since the last election, there has been a noticeable push to increase the visibility of faith on the Left. That continues to manifest itself in interesting ways. While we welcome the religious talk we cannot allow ourselves or others to be fooled by the rhetoric, so we'll keep holding up their policy record. White House Lies About Islam

White House Lies About Islam -
Deems It Morally Equal To Christianity and Judaism

The man who occupies the Oval Office characterized Islam as a great contributor to the world by using misleading phrases, half-truths and out and out lies in his attempt to reset world concepts of Islam to have moral equivalency with Christianity and Judaism. Today's Daily Jot will set the record straight about these fallacies. He spoke of "civilization's debt to Islam" by mentioning several historic credits. Al-Azhar University, he said, paved the way for Europe's Renaissance and Enlightenment. A study of history on this period in no way mentions Islam, the university or even Arab names. The University today is a hotbed for radical Islamic thought.

He said that Muslims developed algebra, the magnetic compass and mastery of printing. Algebra was actually in use by the ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Hindus and Greeks thousands and hundreds of years before Islam. Even Arabic algebra, developed after Mohammed conquered India, was derived from the works of and interpreted into Arabic by Greek, Christian, Jewish and Persian scholars. The compass was invented by the Chinese around 200 BC and was perfected in the 17th century by English scientist Edmond Halley. The Chinese developed woodblock printing around 220 BC. Arabs copied the technique about 1,000 years later. And Gutenberg used his printing press to print the Bible in 1455.

Obama said that Islam "has always been a part of America's story" in citing the Treaty of Tripoli in 1796. For some 300 years Islamic pirates stole ships and enslaved their crews off the coast of Africa. The treaty required America to pay fees for protection from the pirates. The treaty was violated upon demand for more money and President Thomas Jefferson birthed the US Navy to defeat the Islamists. Asked why Islam was attacking our ships, Tripoli's ambassador said, "it is written in the Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave."

Obama said, "And throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance and racial equality." The Koran instructs its followers to kill Jews and Christians if they do not convert to Islam. Islam has warred against Jews and Christians since its inception and continues to do so today. Islamic nations rank at the top of the State Department's most egregious violators of human rights irrespective of race or gender. The Apostle Paul warns in 2 Timothy 3:13, "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived." Obama has deceived the world by attempting to place Islam on moral equivalency with righteousness.

Pro-Life Women Call on Congress to Oppose Taxpayer-Funded Abortion

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, was joined by members of the U.S. House Pro-Life Women's Caucus at a news conference in Washington on Tuesday morning.

They called for the preservation of the Dornan Amendment, which prevents taxpayer-funded abortions in the District of Columbia. President Barack Obama is urging Congress to repeal the amendment, as part of his 2010 budget proposal.

Speakers included Republican Reps. Jean Schmidt, Ohio, Virginia Foxx, N.C., Michele Bachmann, Minn., Mary Fallin, Okla., and Sue Myrick, N.C.

"These female members of Congress speak for the millions of pro-life women who know that abortion is not the answer to an unexpected pregnancy," said Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst at Focus on the Family Action.

"Polls show a majority of Americans oppose the use of their tax dollars to fund abortion, and reversing the Dornan Amendment will only lead to more abortion and heartache for women." (Citizen Link)
