The Calm Before the Storm

Congress has adjourned and is about half way through its August recess.
110th Congress Pre-August Recap
Everyone from the Washington Post to the Weekly Standard is giving the Democratic majorities in Congress low marks. While they have not lived up to most of their promises in all cases, this isn't entirely a bad thing. Sometimes Congress doing nothing is preferred.

New Public Laws
Despite many legislative proposals hitting the skids, Congress did manage to enact at least one top priority for the Democractic Congress and one top priority for the Republican President.

When Congress returns, it has no option but to hit the ground running and carry that pace through adjournment which will likely come late this year.
Pending for White House Action - S. 1: Ethics Bill
One heavily contested and problematic piece of legislation is currently on hold as a maneuver to avoid a constitutional back door for shutting down the legislation.

Looking Ahead to September
Top priorities for prayer include Iraq, the spending bills, and several major reauthorization bills such as No Child Left Behind, the farm bill, and others.

It could hardly be more appropriate that Congress, Lord willing, will be returning in the middle of what is more and more looking to be an active hurricane season.

  • Pray that those members of Congress seeking righteousness and justice for our nation (Isaiah 28:17) would "will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither" (Psalm 1:3)
He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed (Psalm 107:29).
