The Daily Brief - Thursday, May 27, 2010

"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen." (2 Peter 3:18)

The Daily Brief

1. Feds Issue Terror Watch for the Texas/Mexico Border - Fox News

The Department of Homeland Security is alerting Texas authorities to be on the lookout for a suspected member of the Somalia-based Al Shabaab terrorist group who might be attempting to travel to the U.S. through Mexico, a security expert who has seen the memo tells FOXNews.com.

The warning follows an indictment unsealed this month in Texas federal court that accuses a Somali man in Texas of running a "large-scale smuggling enterprise" responsible for bringing hundreds of Somalis from Brazil through South America and eventually across the Mexican border. Many of the illegal immigrants, who court records say were given fake IDs, are alleged to have ties to other now-defunct Somalian terror organizations that have merged with active organizations like Al Shabaab, al-Barakat and Al-Ittihad Al-Islami.

- Lord, if ever there was an incident that shows why we need our borders secured, this is it. We pray you will cause our leadership to stop using this as a reactionary argument because of media coverage, and begin to truly care about the safety and protection of American citizens.

- "Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; but the posterity of the righteous will be delivered." (Proverbs 11:21)

2. Counterterror Adviser Defends Jihad as 'Legitimate Tenet of Islam' - Fox News

The president's top counterterrorism adviser on Wednesday called jihad a "legitimate tenet of Islam," arguing that the term "jihadists" should not be used to describe America's enemies.

During a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, John Brennan described violent extremists as victims of "political, economic and social forces," but said that those plotting attacks on the United States should not be described in "religious terms."

- Father, we are continually appalled at the efforts by this administration to cover up the truth of the religious nature of the war we are fighting. We ask Lord, that You begin to stop the mouths of these people who deceive and twist the truth, attempting to make the aggressive Islamic extremists look innocent.

- "Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; oh, deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!" (Psalm 43:1)

3. Military tensions spike as South Korea holds anti-submarine drills, North scraps sea accords - AP

South Korean warships fired guns and dropped anti-submarine bombs in a large-scale military exercise Thursday, a week after Seoul accused North Korea of shooting a torpedo that sank a navy frigate in March.

The military pushed ahead with the show of force despite warnings from the North that the exercise would bring the peninsula to the brink of war.

North Korea's reaction was swift. Its military declared in a statement carried by the state news agency that it would scrap accords with the South designed to prevent armed clashes at their maritime border, including the cutting of a military hot line, and warned of "prompt physical strikes" if any South Korean ships enter what it says are its waters in a disputed area off the west coast of the peninsula.

- Father, as the world's attention is split between economic collapse and ecological disaster, we pray that You will rise up and protect Asia from this growing threat of nuclear conflict. We pray that You will cut off the arm of the wicked rulers of North Korea, and unravel their entire regime, setting their people free!

- "The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters; but God will rebuke them and they will flee far away, and be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind." (Isaiah 17: 13)

4. Congress Set for Landmark Vote on Lifting Military Gay Ban - AP

Congress is headed toward landmark votes on whether to allow gays to serve openly in the military.

The House of Representatives was expected to vote as early as Thursday on a proposal by Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Democrat who served in the Iraq war, that would repeal the 1993 law known as "don't ask, don't tell."

The legislation -- a compromise struck with the White House and agreed to by the Defense Department -- would give the military as much time as it wants before lifting the ban.Under the bill, the president, defense secretary and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff must first certify that the new policy won't hurt the military's ability to fight.

- Father, we are grieved by the current leadership of America, who continually set themselves against Your Word. We ask that the true ramifications of this action be revealed: housing issues, morale issues, as well as spiritual ones, so that our troops can do their jobs without extraneous concerns.

- "For the terrible one is brought to nothing, the scornful one is consumed, and all who watch for iniquity are cut off - who make a man an offender by a word, and lay a snare for him who reproves in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of naught." (Isaiah 29:20-21)

5. Deadline for jobless benefits nears as Dems struggle for votes on tax and spending package - AP

Democrats are struggling to extend unemployment benefits before they go on vacation next week as they work to ease concerns among jittery lawmakers being hammered over deficit spending.

House leaders hope to vote Thursday on a bill that would extend the benefits through November, but they are running into opposition from Republicans and some Democrats concerned about the cost of the overall bill.

Democratic members of the conservative Blue Dog coalition are unhappy the bill would add $84 billion to the federal budget deficit. Several Blue Dogs were still noncommittal after meeting with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer Thursday morning.

- Father, we pray for Your help concerning our citizens who are in need of jobs, not just unemployment money. We ask, Lord, for solutions for jobs that removes people from the jobless rolls.

- "Man goes out to his work, and to his labor in the evening, these all wait for You that You may give them their food in due season" (Psalm 104:23,27)

6. A) BP's 'Top Kill' Effort Slowing Oil, But Leak Not Fixed Yet - AP

The Coast Guard says BP is having some success slowing the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by injecting mud but the fix isn't done yet.

Coast Guard Lt. Commander Tony Russell said Thursday reports that Admiral Thad Allen, who is overseeing the operation, had called the procedure a success were incorrect. He said Allen said that the flow of mud was stopping some of the oil and gas but had a ways to go before it proved successful.

B) Obama to Extend Ban on New Offshore Oil Drilling - AP

Obama plans to announce Thursday that he is extending a moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits as he reins in offshore drilling plans from shore to shore amid criticism that the administration is not doing enough to tackle the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

- Lord, America is totally at the mercy of foreign oil interests. As Obama signed the limited lifting of the moratorium on drilling last year, now we are in the midst of an oil disaster that stopped the drilling. Is this a coincidence? Father we are broken that BP would be so careless as to allow this tragic oil spill. We pray that not only would You be merciful to the Gulf Coast- to its land, its creatures, and its people, but that You would reveal hidden actions or ulterior motives in this disaster.

- "For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, before the sun." (2 Samuel 12:12)

7. Santorum: Special Prosecutor Should Investigate Sestak Bribery Allegation

In an exclusive Newsmax interview, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum says a special prosecutor should investigate whether the Obama administration bribed Rep. Joe Sestak with a job offer if he dropped out of the race he won against Sen. Arlen Specter. If true, Santorum said, the allegation amounts to a possibly impeachable offense.

- Lord, continually since the administration came to office, we have heard of these "trades" of position for favors. We pray that You will stop the corruption, remove the wicked, and bring righteousness to our nation.

- "The Lord is known by the judgments He executes; the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands." (Psalm 9:16)

8. Wisconsin Veteran Must Remove Flag After Memorial Day, Wife Says - Fox News

An Army veteran in Wisconsin will be allowed to display an American flag until Memorial Day, but the symbol honoring his service in Iraq and Kosovo must come down next Tuesday, his wife told FoxNews.com.

- Lord, even as Christianity continues to be harassed in a nation founded by You, so does the American Flag. We pray that You would return freedom and honor to America. We ask that you remove the politically correct, but morally bankrupt policies which are rampant across our nation.

- "The wicked in his pride persecutes the poor; let them be caught in the plots which they have devised."

The IDF announced Wednesday evening that it was planning to stop the international convoy of nine ships currently on its way to Gaza carrying hundreds of activists and thousands of tons of supplies.

2. Abbas: Second intifada was one of our worst mistakes - Ha'aretz

"The second intifada was one of our worst mistakes," Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told an Egyptian television station on Wednesday. "[Late Palestinian leader Yasser] Arafat didn't want the intifada to erupt, but he couldn't stop it," he added.

The Great American Revival of the 21st Century

Americans need to understand something--that we are in a war for our very own survival. And that there are many fronts on this war. One front is Islamic aggression--either through terrorist acts, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or by colonization here stateside. Another front is from Mexico, where that nation is encouraging its people to come to America illegally and colonize it in order to repatriate formerly held Mexican territories. Still another front is the Marxist attempt to demoralize and destabilize our nation from within--it is an attack on the economy, the morals, the education, the religion and the freedoms held in the US Constitution.

It would seem that we as Americans have lost our bearing. Many have given in to the longstanding strategy of the leftists to embrace that America and who she is, what she is, is bad and has done more bad than good. Many have given in to the strategy of the leftists that homosexuality, which is nothing more than sexual perversion, is a protected class of people. Many have given in to the strategy of the leftists that Islam is a peaceful religion whose anger is only a result of being poor and misunderstood. Many have given in to the strategy of the leftists to teach "critical thinking" which in of itself programs its victims to become indecisive and without absolute truths.

President Ronald Reagan entered the White House at a similar time, although things have progressed exponentially worse since the 1980 election. But Reagan gave America hope, not a false hope of government bail outs, government ownership of healthcare, the financial industry, the insurance industry, the auto industry, but a hope based in the inalienable rights endowed by our Creator of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He did not believe that the government should be giving hard earned tax dollars away to buy votes. He believed in the enterprising and industrious rugged individualism that has characterized the greatness of America since its early settlers.

Borrowing from Jesus Christ, Reagan described his vision of America as that shining city on a hill. Indeed, Jesus said in Matthew 5:14, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid." In 1630, John Winthrop told future Massachusetts colonists, "For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken . . . we shall be made a story and a by-word throughout the world." I believe we are still that light, that shining city even though we have dealt falsely with our God in this work. And we have lost our nation for a time. By turning back to God, we can revive our nation and heal our land.

Answered prayers for Kenya!

Kenya court rules Islamic courts are illegal

Kenya's Islamic courts are illegal and discriminatory, a panel of judges has ruled.

The three judges said the Islamic "Kadhi" courts favored Islam over other faiths, and that this was unconstitutional as Kenya was a secular country.

The issue of Islamic courts has been a contentious point in the country's new proposed constitution.

It is due to go to a referendum in August.

The Kadhi courts - set up under British colonial rule - mainly deal with matters of marriage and inheritance for Kenya's Muslim minority.

The Christian church in Kenya brought the case to court six years ago.

As part of a power-sharing deal to end deadly riots following elections in December 2007, it was agreed that a new constitution would be written. (BBC) Read more.

Prayer Request:

Since this news was released on Monday, the nation of Kenya has announced that it is going to appeal this ruling in a higher court. If this appeal wins, then Islamic law will be part of the Constitution in Kenya, after all. PRAY THAT THE ORIGINAL OPINION HOLDS.

"The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 2 Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity." (Psalm 93:1,2)
