Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will meet with US President Barack Obama next week, has vowed that "Israel will not withdraw from the Golan Heights." He spoke at a Likud ministers' forum just before the weekly cabinet meeting last week. The Golan issue was raised on May 10 by Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, who served until a short while ago as chairman of the Knesset's Golan Lobby.

Katz praised the prime minister for remarks he made about the northern area while speaking with editors of Russian newspapers. He asked Netanyahu to reiterate his statement as to Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights during the Likud ministers' meeting. The prime minister gladly accepted and stated that he had no plans to withdraw from the Golan. "I view this declaration as a message to the Golan's residents and to all of Israel's residents," said Katz. "The prime minister's statement carries good news to Israel's security. It is a message to the United States, the region's countries and the rest of the world. The message is that Israel will be ready for negotiations in the future, but that there will not be an Israeli commitment to withdraw from the Golan, so that they know the rules in advance. This message is undoubtedly very significant, on the eve of the prime minister's visit to the White House."

Netanyahu made the statement less than one day after the Obama administration decided to renew economic sanctions imposed on Syria. Netanyahu's remark clarifies that the Turkish-mediated talks held between Damascus and the Ehud Olmert government have been frozen and would likely remain that way. The Syrians are demanding an Israeli declaration on the Jewish state's willingness to withdraw from the Golan Heights as the basis for any continued dialogue.

The prime minister has said in closed forums that he is ready to hold negotiations with Syria, without preconditions. Before the Knesset elections in February, Netanyahu visited the Golan and planted a tree there as a symbol of Israel's sovereignty over the area. "The president's master plan calls for Arab countries to set a timetable for raising the Israeli flag in their capitals, a sign of recognition of the Jewish State. Simultaneously, the PA flag would be raised in Jerusalem neighborhoods."

U.S. President Barack Obama told Jordan's King Abdullah two weeks ago to meet with leading Muslim Arab countries and persuade them to accept changes in the Saudi 2002 Initiative, according to the London-based Arabic language Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper. The report reflects the president's swift action on the Middle East since he was elected last November.

President Obama's major proposed alteration in the Saudi peace plan is for Arab countries to grant citizenship to approximately five million Arabs who are descendants of former Israelis while allowing them the right to move to a new Palestinian Authority country. The Saudi plan calls for them to be allowed to immigrate to Israel, a suggestion that virtually every Israeli leader categorically rejects. President Obama also reportedly told the king that he wants the United Nations flag raised over holy sites in eastern Jerusalem, where the PA would have total sovereignty under the Saudi plan.

The United Nations Security Council unanimously endorsed a statement Monday calling for the creation of a Palestinian state and pushing for an upcoming Israeli-Palestinian peace conference slated for Moscow under the auspices of the Middle East Quartet. Russia initiated the high-level meeting and statement in a bid for a greater lead role in Middle East peace talks. Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov hoped that the endorsement would press Israel into accepting a two-state solution, saying, "We have made use of the prestige of the Security Council to lay out what the international community wants." Lavrov added that the decision "will impact the approach of those who have not yet adopted a policy."

Earlier, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on Israel to change its policy on settlements in the territories and maintained that the Jewish state has failed to halt settlement growth despite its promises to do so. US Ambassador Susan Rice echoed Ban's criticism before reiterating that the Obama administration intends to integrate the 2002 Arab peace plan, which calls for a return to pre-1967 borders, into its approach. Israeli officials shunned the meeting in protest of the assembly's president's intention to call for the immediate implementation of the two-state solution. Gabriella Shalev, Israel's ambassador to the UN, said that " . . . the peace process involves only the two relevant parties, and that it is not the Council's place to intervene." (ICEJ)

• Russia has absolutely no business intervening in the affairs of Israel. Neither do any other nations have any legal rights to affect Israel, which was established and recognized as a sovereign state by the United Nations in 1948. Pray that the US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, do nothing except to defend the rights of Israel. Whom does Rice represent? Pray for the Lord's intervention in this debate at the UN so that this matter is dropped, even though the Moslem nations object.

Israel to Cede Control of King David's Tomb to Vatican

Ten-year-long negotiations between Israel and the Vatican appear to be drawing to a close, with concerns rising that Israel will cede control of the building housing King David's Tomb in Jerusalem. The Bilateral Permanent Working Commission - a team of negotiators representing Israel and the Vatican - released an upbeat press release at the end of last week, speaking of "mutual commitment to reaching a final agreement as soon as possible."

The two states have been negotiating a treaty since March 1999 on matters having to do with Church-owned or Church-claimed property in Israel. Among the most significant issued under negotiations is the Vatican's demand for the Last Supper room, located on the second floor of the ancient Mt. Zion building that also houses the tombs of Kings David, Solomon, and Hezekiah. In addition, the Vatican is claiming areas around the Kinneret Sea, as well as in Caesaria and Jerusalem.

A Foreign Ministry official confirmed in 2005 that a "blueprint of a possible agreement with the Vatican has been received." The proposed contract, as Arutz-7 reported at the time, read as follows:

"The State of Israel hands over to the Holy See the use of the Cenacle [the room of the event known as the Last Supper, above King David's tomb - ed.], of the access path to it, and of the spaces adjacent to it . . . It is the Holy See's intention to inform the Bishops - and through them the world's Priests - that the Catholic Church has been given the use of the Cenacle, inviting them to visit the Holy Place together with their faithful. . . The Holy See hands over this use of the Cenacle to the Custody of the Holy Land [which acts on behalf of the Holy See] . . . [which] will keep the Cenacle open from 6 AM to 8 AM for the celebration of the Holy Mass . . . Official liturgical celebrations of non-Catholic Churches can take place only upon prior written permission by the Custody of the Holy Land."

The proposed agreement also stipulated that the Holy See will preserve the historic character of the site and keep it open to pilgrims and tourists, and that Israel will provide for the safety of the site. The Foreign Ministry official said at the time that "Israel is not prepared to relinquish its jurisdiction over this area." (

• What does this agreement mean to the world's many Protestants? Will they be able to visit the site without many legal entanglements with the Vatican? Why does the Catholic Church think that it is entitled to special agreements with Israel? Pray that this agreement is never enacted and that this site is open to whoever wants to visit. The City of David belongs to God -- not to the Pope.

"But now I have chosen Jerusalem for my Name to be there, and I have chosen David to rule my people Israel." (2 Chronicles 6:6)


It has been revealed that Iran's Revolutionary Guards have begun deploying mobile launchers for surface-to-air and surface-to-sea missiles in the Strait of Hurmuz and other areas in the Gulf. An Iranian official, quoted anonymously in the Saudi daily Al-Watan, said Iranian forces deployed the missile bases following secret reports that the United States and Israel were working on a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.

Iran's preparations for a potential military strike is not new. The republic has conducted several military exercises over the past few years, some with the explicit intention of preparing the armed forces for a possible confrontation with the West.

The source said the missiles were deployed a few weeks ago. Iran is said to have informed Arab countries in the region of its activities and reassured its neighbors that the missiles were not aimed at states in the region, a reference to Sunni Arab states such as Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, which have a Shi'ite majority but Sunni government.

The United States has not ruled out the possibility of a military strike on Iran. Iran has threatened to retaliate to any aggression on its soil by closing down the strategic Strait of Hurmuz, which will disrupt global oil supplies. Last year Iran opened a new naval facility in Jask, at the entrance to the Gulf, the declared aim of which was to enable Iran to block the enemy from entering Iran in the event that the country were to be attacked.

• Pray that international intelligence agencies will maintain vigilance and correctly discern the intentions and strategies of Iran.

"But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand." (Ezekiel 33: 6)


According to diplomatic reports received by the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the US has quietly decided to set October as a deadline for completing the first round of its talks with Iran over its renegade nuclear weapons program. Amb. Dennis Ross, special US envoy on Iran, met with senior Arab and European diplomats in recent weeks and agreed on the timeline, according to the reports leaked to Ha'aretz, which added that if Iran's behavior had not changed by that time, Washington would adopt a tougher policy toward the Islamic Republic. This comes after intense pressure on Washington from Israel and several Arab countries not to allow Iran to stall for time while it secretly continues its nuclear program until it's too late.

The information received by Jerusalem also included an assessment that "at the pace the Iranians are moving, it is not at all clear whether by fall the dialogue will have begun . . . If the Iranians continue being evasive, it may be necessary to change the dialogue strategy." Iran will hold presidential elections in June, and there is hope in diplomatic circles that if firebrand President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad is replaced by a less hard-line politician, negotiations might be easier. European sources have been the main channel through which American plans toward Iran have come into Israel's possession, as the Obama administration has not shared those plans with Israel directly. • Pray that the Lord's wisdom will be the key to American talks with Iran, whose leadership cannot be trusted to tell the truth and to follow through with any commitment, whether verbal or written. Pray for new leadership to be elected by the Iranians, removing the current president from any influence on Iranian policies. Implore the Lord to not allow the USA to drop its support with or for Israel.

"Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue." (Psalm 120: 2)


US President Barack Obama is planning to deliver a speech to the Muslim world in Egypt, according to a White House press briefing as seen on the White House Web site. The speech is set to take place on June 4, although the exact venue in Egypt had not been selected as of May 8. Although news reports had suggested Obama would visit Israel in June, it apparently won't be part of this trip, as there are no other plans for Mideast travel. The President will then go on to Germany and visit the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Obama's great uncle was one of the US soldiers that helped liberate the camp.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that Obama's choice of Egypt was due to it being a "country that in many ways represents the heart of the Arab world, and I think this will be an opportunity for the President to address and discuss our relationship with the Muslim world."

Egypt is led by President Hosni Mubarak, who rules in a semi-totalitarian government. While Gibbs said that there would be a chance in the trip to discuss human rights, the event is not a speech to leaders. Said Gibbs, "This is a speech to many, many people and a continuing effort by this President and the White House to demonstrate how we can work together to ensure the safety, security and future well-being, through hope and opportunity, of the children of this country and of the Muslim world."

Gibbs connected the trip to Obama's earlier trip to Turkey and his interview with Al-Arabiya as efforts to reach out to Muslims. Egypt is one of the Arab nations especially concerned about Iranian influence in the Middle East, and like Turkey, is an ally with the United States.

The following prayer requests, all related to the talks on Monday, were publshed by Intercessors for Israel.

1. Prime Minister Netanyahu Will Meet the President in the Oval Office on Monday

This Monday, Benjamin Netanyahu will be meeting for the first time - in his official capacity as Israel's Prime Minister - with US President Barak Hussein Obama. Reports are that the US administration will pressure Israel to divide her/God's land for "peace". This would be dangerous to Israel and absolutely disastrous for America.

+ Abba, strengthen Netanyahu to stand against the pressure to cave in to this unbiblical and - in reality - illogical request."Be strong and of a good courage." (Deuteronomy 31:7b)

+ We hold Netanyahu into the specific anointing that You have provided for Israel's current leader (1 Samuel 9:16).

+ Do not allow Netanyahu to yield when being pressured by the US to do that which he knows is not right for Israel.

+ Guard over Netanyahu's commitment to never give up the Golan Heights! "I will bring Israel again to his habitation, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan [the Golan], and his soul shall be satisfied upon mount Ephraim and Gilead." (Jeremiah 50:19)

+ We ask for unity and wisdom and godly counsel for the team that will be with Netanyahu in the White House - especially for Israel's new US Ambassador, Michael Oren.

+ Have mercy on America and somehow warn Obama this very weekend that he must not touch Your land (Joel 3:1-2). Send a Jonah to him.

2. Prime Minister Netanyahu to Warn America of Iranian Missile Threat

Obama's administration thinks that if Israel divides her land and helps establish a Palestinian State, then it will be easier to stop Iran's drive to get nuclear weapons. But Israel says - and we agree with this - that if Iran is not stopped, then nothing Israel does will make a difference. Iranian nukes are a global threat. If she succeeds in obtaining them, literally all hell could break loose.

+ Help Netanyahu and his team as they warn the US administration that the real danger is Iran's drive towards obtaining nuclear weapons - not the lack of a "Palestine".

+ Give them the keys to unlock this false thinking on the part of the US.

+ Open the eyes of Obama, Biden, Clinton and Jones that what Israel is saying about the Iranian threat is truly an immediate, urgent danger.

+ Almighty God, have mercy on Israel, the West - and the Moslems - by not allowing Iran to succeed in obtaining nukes.


It is vital that American believers are aware of what really is at stake in this meeting. If Israel is pushed or deserted, judgment on America will likely come very hard and very harsh. We say this having seen what has happened for the last 20 years every time the US has touched God's land and people in an unbiblical way. o Set the trumpet to Your mouth and wake up the American intercessors that this meeting is vital for their nation's destiny. "For the nation and kingdom that will not serve you [Israel as she is being restored] shall perish. Yes, those nations shall be utterly wasted." (Isaiah 60:12)

+ Aid American Messianic Jews to stand in the gap for America and their homeland Israel.
Remove discouragement from intercessors who may feel that after all they have prayed for that has not happened, why bother anymore. "Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there none to answer? Is My hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver?" (Isaiah 50:2a) o Give the Body in America boldness to intercede and to stand. "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore . . . Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints." (Ephesians 6:10-14a, 18)

Why is the press remaining mostly silent about the so-called "hate crimes law" that passed in the House on April 29? The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act passed in a 249-175 vote (17 Republicans joined with 231 Democrats). These Democrats should have been tested on their knowledge of the First Amendment, equal protection of the laws (14th Amendment), and the prohibition of double jeopardy (no American can be prosecuted twice for the same crime or offense). If they had been, they would have known that this proposal, now headed for a Senate vote, violates all these constitutional provisions.

This bill would make it a federal crime to willfully cause bodily injury (or try to) because of the victim's actual or perceived "race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability" - as explained on the White House Web site, signaling the president's approval. A defendant convicted on these grounds would be charged with a "hate crime" in addition to the original crime, and would get extra prison time. The extra punishment applies only to these "protected classes."

A hearing on the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, already approved by the U.S. House as H.R. 1913 and pending in the Senate as S. 909, is expected in the Senate Judiciary Committee soon. It's been described by Shawn D. Akers, policy analyst with Liberty Counsel, as a bill to create penalties against "victims" who were chosen based on an "actual or perceived . . . sexual orientation, gender identity." • This bill is an attempt to codify into law the bias against Christians who speak up against sin. Lord, we pray that those who stand against this law will be sensitive to those who have been victimized by crime and whose pain has been exploited by those with an anti-Christian agenda. May there be an unveiling of the harmful consequences that will arise if this bill passes in the Senate.

"The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed." (Psalm 2:2)


Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday that the congressional intelligence committees are the best place to determine who's telling the truth in the dispute between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the CIA. Pelosi has accused the CIA of lying to Congress about the use of enhanced interrogation tactics, while the CIA rejects the claim.

McConnell, R-Ky., told "FOX News Sunday" that he personally questions the need to hold inquiries to find out "who knew what when," but acknowledged that the disagreement between Pelosi and the CIA could warrant one. "There's no question you've got a dispute here between the speaker and the CIA," McConnell said. "We know what the CIA believes and the speaker apparently disagrees with them. The best way to resolve the dispute if it needs to be resolved is through the (House and Senate) intelligence committees."

CIA Director Leon Panetta issued a statement in response saying CIA records indicate officers "briefed truthfully" on interrogation techniques. "It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress. That is against our laws and our values," he said. But he, too, said it is "up to Congress to evaluate all the evidence and reach its own conclusions about what happened."

• As Mrs. Pelosi has questioned the laws, values, and integrity of the CIA, and has publicly stated that she was never briefed on interrogation tactics, and as the Central Intelligence Agency has records to indicate otherwise, this can of worms has been opened. One cannot make these kinds of statements and/or accusations and hope that they will just disappear.

Pray for the mercy of God and the truth as the Speaker of the House is prompted to back up her claim. Intercede for the life of Mrs. Pelosi and that, God willing, the intelligence committee will have an opportunity to get to the bottom of this without delay. Pray, as one is to be vindicated and the other exposed, that God will be given free course into the hearts and lives of all involved and that they will see His plans and His purposes for their lives more clearly.

"The wicked is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, But the righteous will come through trouble. " (Proverbs 12:13)


President Obama's decision to re-institute the military tribunals at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay has raised questions about whether such a plan is feasible, given that Obama has vowed to close the prison by January. The Obama administration won't say which of the 241 detainees at the prison in Cuba will be tried before the commission. Only some of trials will occur at Guantanamo partly because the president is still committed to closing the prison within a year of taking office.

But experts say it will be almost impossible to conduct commissions there before its scheduled closure. "There is no way in hell that they're going to get these commissions done by January of next year unless, for some odd reason, somebody decides to plead guilty," Charles "Cully" Stimson of the Heritage Foundation, told FOX News.

Obama announced Friday that the revived commissions will offer detainees additional legal protections -- specifically more freedom to select their lawyers, block the use of evidence obtained through coercion and limit the use of hearsay evidence. Another change will allow military commission judges to establish the jurisdiction of their own courts. (Fox News)

• Lord, please grant wisdom to the leaders in Washington who are determining the best way to deal with those who have attacked us. May there be wisdom in the administration so that these people will be dealt with in a manner that is just while it protects our citizenry.

"I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me." (John 5:30)


Critics Deride Bill Designed to Keep Weapons Out of Terrorists' Hands

A bill designed to keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists is drawing fire from gun rights advocates who say it could infringe upon regular citizens' constitutional right to bear arms. The "Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009" would authorize Attorney General Eric Holder to deny the sale or transfer of firearms to known or suspected terrorists -- a list that could extend beyond groups such as radical Islamists and other groups connected to international terror organizations.

Critics say the names of suspected terrorists could be drawn from existing government watch lists that cover such broad categories as animal rights extremists, Christian identity extremists, black separatists, anti-abortion extremists, anti-immigration extremists and anti-technology extremists. "It doesn't say anything about trials and due process," said Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America. "This is one of the most outrageous pieces of legislation to come along in some time. It's basically saying, 'I suspect you, so your rights are toast.'"

The proposed gun control bill, which was introduced by Rep. Peter King, R-NY, last week and has bipartisan support, is currently before the House Judiciary Committee. Under the proposed law, those denied access to firearms would have the right to challenge the government's ruling in federal court. The National Rifle Association, the nation's largest pro-gun lobby, said it was still reviewing King's bill, but a spokesman said the organization had opposed similar efforts "in the past due to the serious inaccuracies within the terror lists that affect the rights of law abiding citizens." • Please pray that a bill that is this constitutionally unsound will never be passed in this country. Intercede for the American people who believe that the constitution can protect them and their rights and do not need the likes of what Rep. King is proposing. Pray that God will direct our leaders to bring forth wisdom and sound debate on this issue and that the line of demarcation between an American citizen and a terrorist, of any sort, will not be crossed in Jesus name.

A movement to reclaim for states all rights not specifically designated to the federal government in the U.S. Constitution is exploding across the nation, with 35 states already acting or at least considering such proposals - and one state lawmaker estimating the nation as a whole could save $11 trillion in coming years if it would succeed. WND reported on this not long ago when the number of states with lawmakers considering such sovereignty efforts reached 20. Now, according to the Tenth Amendment Center, such provisions have been launched in at least 35 states. They all address the Tenth Amendment that says: "powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Michael Boldin, a spokesman for the Tenth Amendment Center, said his organization has created a posting for all such proposals to be tracked. Great is the LORD's anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us." In light of liberal Supreme Court Justice David Souter's pending retirement, careful insider analysis of Senator Arlen Specter's defection from Republican to Democrat reveals a strange irony: Although he could give the Democrats a 60-seat filibuster-proof majority, his defection actually strengthens the "rule of quorum" power and purity of Republican opposition within the Senate Judiciary Committee, who are now more united than ever in their opposition to liberal judges. The prime example is President Obama's nomination of the ANTI-JESUS, ANTI-LIFE Judge David Hamilton, the same bad judge who issued controversial rulings banning public prayers offered "in Jesus name," and hastening the abortion of unborn children. Republicans are following traditional "quorum rules" which can prevent Judge David Hamilton from getting any committee vote. If this continues, we'll win, and this anti-Jesus, anti-Life Judge will never be promoted to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Quorum rules? Yes! The Senate Judiciary Committee procedural rules state: "Eight Members of the Committee, including at least two Members of the minority, shall constitute a quorum for the purpose of transacting business. If there is objection to bring the matter to a vote without further debate, a roll call vote of the Committee shall be taken, and debate shall be terminated if the motion to bring the matter to a vote without further debate passes with ten votes in the affirmative, one of which must be cast by the minority." On April 29th, only one minority Member attended the Hamilton hearings, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), whose tough questioning opposed Hamilton, so no vote was permissible.

When Specter had ruled Judiciary as GOP minority ranking member, he could likely be counted on by the Obama administration as "one soft vote" to promote liberal judges. But now since Specter is no longer Republican, he cannot help Obama. And in breaking news this week, solid conservative Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) has assumed Specter's place of leadership as minority ranking Member, and all other Judiciary Republicans Hatch, Grassley, Kyl, Graham, Cornyn, Coburn, can generally be counted upon (with the possible exception of gang-of-14 member Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, 202-224-5972), to stand firm against abortion and religious censorship. Now Sen. Sessions says he agrees with Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), that we should oppose and filibuster Hamilton's nomination to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, the same court that reversed his liberal, activist, aggressive decisions for years. Only by re-writing the quorum rules, and overriding Senate tradition, can Democrats claim absolute power.

To support Senators Inhofe and Sessions, and stop Hamilton, we first need solidarity among any good conservatives or moderates seated on the 19-member Senate Judiciary Committee, especially Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA), who remains on Judiciary as a Democrat. (Human Events)

James Comey pushed for Supreme Court James B. Comey Jr., the top Bush administration official who rebelled against plans for domestic eavesdropping, is being pushed by some White House officials for inclusion on the short list of candidates to replace Supreme Court Justice David Souter, Democratic sources said. Comey, a former federal prosecutor and deputy attorney general, is the sort of unconventional choice - someone who's not a federal appeals court judge - that key senators and some administration officials have been urging the president to consider.

Comey, 48, has law-and-order credentials and is an authority on national-security cases, yet sees limits to how far government can go, and he stood up to oppose controversial Bush administration policies when other officials folded. Comey threatened to resign as the No. 2 official at the Justice Department because of his objections to the planned domestic-eavesdropping program. He made his case in a private session with President George W. Bush that Comey described in 2007 congressional testimony as a "full exchange."

Officials who are impressed by Comey are pushing to have him included on a final list for the president's consideration. No formal short list is yet on the president's desk, because choices are still being weighed and vetted, and he has not met all the potential candidates. President Barack Obama's aides have narrowed the list of possibilities considerably, but more than a dozen candidates remain under formal consideration, the sources said. (Politico; Reuters)

Obama met with Senate Republican and Democratic leaders at the White House on Wednesday to discuss the process for nominating and selecting a new justice, but he told the senators he would not announce his nominee in coming days. During the 40-minute Oval Office meeting, the president focused on the process and reiterated his desire to have the next justice seated by the time new Supreme Court session begins in October.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) made pitches for a nominee with real life experience, such as a governor or a law professor. The senators said the president stressed that he wanted a respectful process; he did not mention any potential names. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he didn't recommend anyone to the president, but encouraged him not to pick a "judicial activist."

McConnell and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee, urged Democrats to allow the standard 60-day vetting period after the nomination is announced before launching hearings. "That's important to give the committee the opportunity to review the record," McConnell said. "In all likelihood, unless the president sends up a very controversial nominee, the vote should be able to occur well in advance of the first Monday in October." Said Sessions: "There should not be any perception of ramming this through on some artificial deadlines." (Reuters)

• Pray that the Democrats, who have sworn to move this nomination through the Senate in an orderly and a timely fashion, and that they will hold to their promise to do so. The stakes for this Supreme Court are way too high to do otherwise.

Just two days ago, the IRS released a decision affirming pastors' rights to encourage their congregations to get involved in politics and to vote their values! Following a complaint filed by the liberal Texas Freedom Network (TFN), the IRS opened an investigation into the Niemoller Foundation, which held six pastors briefings in 2006 calling pastors to stand up for moral issues and push their people to do the same. Governor Perry and other elected officials also spoke at these conferences, and encouraged attendants to vote their morals at the polls. TFN accused the Niemoller Foundation, a nonprofit tax-exempt organization, of attempting to influence elections and endorsing candidates. The IRS disagreed, siding with Free Market Foundation's legal arm, which represented the Niemoller Foundation, and said that the church did not violate their tax-exempt status by encouraging people to get involved in politics. Many liberal organizations have attempted to intimidate and silence pastors, but yesterday's IRS ruling proves that pastors can legally discuss political issues and encourage their congregations to get involved in the political process and take a stand!

Although pastors and 501(c)(3) groups still cannot endorse candidates or spend substantial portions of their non-profit budgets on legislative lobbying, they now no longer need to be hesitant about vigorously expressing their views on moral issues to their congregations and constituencies.

Furthermore, they should not be intimidated by the likes of the ACLU or by People for the American Way. This, indeed, is a wonderful victory for religious rights of all Americans.

While there have been many, many polls on the abortion issue over the years, and many that have shown more people holding a pro-life vs. a "pro-choice" position, this is the first time in the history of the Gallup polling company, that their poll has shown that a majority of the American people are pro-life." Gallup said on Friday that a new poll, conducted May 7 to 10, found "51 percent of Americans calling themselves 'pro-life' on the issue of abortion and 42 percent 'pro-choice.' This is the first time a majority of U.S. adults have identified themselves as pro-life since Gallup began asking this question in 1995.The new results, obtained from Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey, represent a significant shift from a year ago, when 50 percent were pro-choice and 44 percent pro-life. Prior to now, the highest percentage identifying as pro-life was 46 percent, in both August 2001 and May 2002." (Christian Coalition of America)

The President's proposed budget eliminates all federal funding for abstinence education programs in public schools, replacing them with "comprehensive sex education programs." The program would cut more than $100 million in abstinence education funding and create a new $110 million "teen pregnancy prevention initiative" that will promote use of condoms and other contraceptives among teenagers. Another $50 million would be given to states for pregnancy prevention via condom use. (Family Research Council Prayer Targets)

• Intervene, Lord, to stop this initiative. May Your plan for abstinence and marriage be restored to our education and laws. May the new budget's anti-abstinence provisions be excised and may local educators increase their commitment to abstinence teaching.

The District Council Tuesday voted to recognize gay marriages performed in states where it is legal. Only former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry stood against the bill. He declared to fellow council members, "That's where I stand -- I'm going to vote no."

Now Congress has to make a decision on the action, because it rules over D.C. So it has to either veto the same-sex marriage bill or let it stand. And it's likely to let it stand, which some analysts and pastors worry could set a legal precedent.

Bishop Harry Jackson is a leading opponent of same-sex marriage. At a rally of opponents to gay marriage outside D.C. City Hall just after the vote, Jackson told CBN News, "This will give the Congress the first opportunity it's had to weigh in on the question of whether the Defense of Marriage Act is legitimate nationwide."

If Congress goes along with D.C., same-sex marriage opponents worry that could ultimately lead to Congress re-examining, maybe even repealing, the Defense of Marriage Act - the 1996 federal law also known as DOMA that allows states to reject same-sex marriage performed in other states. (CBN News)

A contentious "Rightwing Extremism" report that warned of military veterans as possible recruits for terrorist attacks against the U.S. was not authorized, has been withdrawn and is being rewritten, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told Capitol Hill lawmakers. The report also said "rightwing extremism" may include groups opposed to abortion and immigration, among several other threat assessments.

Ms. Napolitano said the report titled "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," is not the only report she has seen that says veterans are targets for recruitment by racist and other hate groups. "The wheels came off the wagon because the vetting process was not followed," Ms. Napolitano told the House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday. The report is no longer out there," she said. "An employee sent it out without authorization."

The report was shared with state and local law enforcement officials nationwide via the department's internal Web site on April 7, angering Republican lawmakers and military veterans who said it unfairly stereotyped veterans. Ms. Napolitano . . . said the report is in the process of being "replaced or redone in a much more useful and much more precise fashion." (Washington Times)

New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden, known for his aggressive and sometimes controversial efforts to limit smoking and consumption of trans fats in the nation's largest metropolis, has been chosen by President Obama to direct the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the White House said Friday. In a statement, Obama called Frieden, 48, "an expert in preparedness and response to health emergencies" who in seven years as New York City's health commissioner has "been at the forefront of the fight against heart disease, cancer and obesity, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and AIDS, and in the establishment of electronic health records."

In announcing the appointment, which does not require Senate confirmation, the White House said that Frieden's anti-cigarette campaign reduced the number of smokers in New York by 350,000 and "cut teen smoking in half." The city has increased cancer screenings, dramatically reduced deaths from the AIDS virus and "implemented the largest community electronic health records project in the country" under his tenure, the White House said. Frieden also oversaw New York's response to incidents of anthrax and drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Conservatives balked at his creation of a program to pass out millions of condoms each year in an effort to slow the spread of AIDS. But others applauded his zeal, hailing him as an activist health care leader who was good for the city. "When it comes to aggressive, innovative and effective approaches to help people live better, longer lives, our Health Commissioner Tom Frieden really stands in a class by himself," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a statement. Frieden could also play a central role as an adviser in Obama's efforts to reform the nation's health care system. (Washington Post)
