National Day of Prayer: May 7, 2009
Urge Your Church to Observe the National Day of Prayer

Dear Friends,
Yesterday was the anniversary of the national day of "public humiliation, prayer and fasting" that Abraham Lincoln called in 1863, amid the bloodiest war in American history.
Less than one week from now, Thursday, May 7, 2009, American believers will observe another National Day of Prayer. Is your church on board? This Sunday will be your last opportunity to motivate your congregation to get involved in this important event.
Praying churches are America's greatest hope. At FRC, we see local church prayer as the first line of action in obeying Christ's call for us to be salt and light in our nation and to "occupy" until He returns.
In colonial days, especially times of crisis, governors proclaimed special days for wholehearted prayer and fasting. The Continental Congress appointed days for all Americans to pray for the fledgling nation. They also called days for thanksgiving.
In 1952, President Truman signed a Congressional resolution calling for an annual National Day of Prayer. In 1988, President Reagan made it permanent on the national calendar, the first Thursday in May each year.
NDP Chairman Shirley Dobson and Vice Chairman Brian Toon, their staffs, and an army of over 40,000 volunteers work year round to make this event a time of genuine, united, repentance, prayer, supplication and thanksgiving to Almighty God. Observances are expected at over 50,000 public locations this year. FRC President Tony Perkins will speak at the Hawaii State Capitol in Honolulu. Many events will include elected officials, Christian celebrities and members of the military - and, of course, pastors and churches.
In recent years, America has lost its moral compass. We desperately need God's help. The National Day of Prayer is a part of what we must do so that God can keep His promise to heal our land (2 Chr. 7:14).
Please join us in observing the National Day of Prayer next Thursday.
Appealing to God in prayer,
Rev. Pierre Bynum
Regional Director for Church Ministries

NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER 2009
"Prayer: America's Hope"
"May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD, even as we put our hope in you." (Psalm 33:22)
The theme for this year's National Day of Prayer is: "Prayer: America's Hope."
From the time the first colonists set foot on American soil, prayer has been the bedrock of our land. And it remains so to this day.
To set our hope upon any other idol is to set our hope upon "sinking sand."
Our "effectual, fervent prayers" are the only true hope for our nation. Praise God that Congress has set aside one day each year to honor the place of prayer in America, and to allow public gatherings where God's people can join hands and hearts to lift up prayer for our nation. Thank God for the NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER!

THE NDP PRAYER FOR OUR NATION
May 7, 2009
Written by Beth Moore, 2009 Honorary Chairman,
National Day of Prayer
Father in Heaven,
We lift our eyes toward Your Throne,
where you reign in righteousness.
Your Word assures us that when Your
people cry out in sincerity and humility,
You will never turn a deaf ear to us.
We call upon You now,
seeking Your forgiveness and favor.
Look over this fevered landscape and heal us, Lord.
Drop knees to the floor and raise eyes to the sky,
for we know where our help comes from.
Unite these States again in devotion to You,
and blur every dividing line.
Do not give us over to our sins.
Give us, instead, over to passionate prayer
that moves Your heart.
"May your unfailing love rest upon us,
O Lord, even as we put our hope in you."
In the name of our Lord and Savior,
Amen.
A Message from Shirley Dobson
Chairman, NDP Task Force
Dear Friends,
Today, our nation is in desperate need of intercession. Despite our sophisticated technology and our military prowess, the crises facing our country have left our leaders perplexed and uncertain.
Human answers fall short; we must look heavenward. Scripture tells us that nations rise and fall at God's command, and the hearts of rulers are in His hand. If healing is to come to our land, the Almighty's wisdom must be sought in humility, repentance and supplication. (II Chronicles 7:14)
With that in mind, our 2009 theme is appropriately titled "Prayer -- America's Hope!" It's based on Psalm 33:22: "May Your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You."
Although our present troubles may appear in surmountable, we can take heart in knowing that we serve a God of mercy, compassion, and power.
May the Lord richly bless all you endeavor in His Name.
Sincerely,
Mrs. James C. Dobson (Shirley) Chairman, NDP Task Force
