Today's Daily Brief
1. White House 'Ready' for Next High Court Nomination, Setting Up Tricky Timetable - Fox News
The White House will "of course be ready" when the next seat opens up on the Supreme Court, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday, potentially setting up a tricky timetable for nominating and confirming a successor to Justice John Paul Stevens before the next term starts in October.
• Heavenly Father, we pray for this issue with urgency. Lord, we pray the next Justice to be seated will be your minister. We pray for all the Justices to diligently seek you. Change their hearts. Let them judge with righteousness.
• Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. (Exodus 18:21)
2. Report on Social Security Delayed - AP
The Obama administration is delaying release of the annual report on the financial health of Social Security and Medicare so that the new report can reflect the impact of the recently passed health care overhaul. This official said the decision was made to incorporate all of the changes made by the legislation to better reflect reality now that Congress has passed health care overhaul.
• Lord, we pray that all the numbers coming from the government will reflect a true analysis of the actual numbers. Let your truth be reflected and not dubious numbers manipulated.
• Diverse weights and diverse measures, They are both alike, an abomination to the Lord. (Proverbs 20:10)
3. Some Jobless Benefits Run Out - Wall Street Journal
Tens of thousands of jobless Americans could lose unemployment benefits this week after Congress failed last month to enact a short-term extension, with Democratic and Republican lawmakers on Monday exchanging blame. Meantime, Democratic and Republican lawmakers said they supported temporary extensions. But such Republicans as Sen. John McCain and Sen. Mitch McConnell said their support was contingent on identifying the funds to pay for them.
• Lord, we pray for all our elected officials to be very frugal and wise in what extensions and bills they pass. Help those that are unemployed and let churches contribute to help these people with their needs.
• Blessed is he who considers the poor . . . The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, and he will be blessed on the earth; You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies. (Psalms 41:1, 2)
4. Obama to Limit Use of Nuclear Weapons - London Times
President Obama will today announce that he is to dramatically narrow the conditions under which the United States will use nuclear weapons, even for self-defense.
• Heavenly Father, we bind any actions that would cause our nation to be unguarded and unsafe. We pray that you will replace all leadership that is moving to make our nation weak and less protected.
• The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the righteous will stand. A man will be commended according to his wisdom, but he who is of a perverse heart will be despised. (Proverbs 12:7-8)
5. Conservatives Fear Census will Inflate Gay Numbers - One News Now
With strong backing from the Census Bureau, gay-rights activists are urging maximum participation by their community in the first U.S. census that will tally same-sex couples who say they're married - even those without a marriage license.
• Lord, we pray those who are seeking to manipulate the census numbers to cause an unbalance in the actual numbers, will be blocked from their activities. Foil their plans and let truth be revealed.
• You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure . . .for all who behave unrighteously , are an abomination to the Lord your God. (Deuteronomy 25:15, 16)
6. US Govt to Seek a Record $16M Penalty Over Toyota Recalls - ABC News
The government accused Toyota of hiding a "dangerous defect" and proposed a record $16.4 million fine on Monday for failing to quickly alert regulators to safety problems in gas pedals on popular models such as the Camry and Corolla. There could be further penalties under continuing federal investigations. The Japanese automaker faces private lawsuits seeking many millions more.
• Lord, knowing that the government now owns some car companies and is looking for ways to improve American companies car sales, we look at this sudden intense investigation of Toyota with scrutiny. We pray that all car companies will come under the same intense investigation and not just this foreign company - Toyota.
• Remove from me the way of lying, and grant me Your law graciously. I have chosen the way of truth; Your judgments I have laid before me. (Psalms 119:29, 30)
7. Texas Man Threatened Deadly Force to Stop Abortion - AP
A Texas man faces charges after he filed documents in federal court threatening to use deadly force to stop an abortion if the US Supreme Court didn't immediately act to outlaw the practice, federal officials said Monday.
"My religious beliefs include the beliefs that an individual is alive at the moment of conception, abortion is murder and is the worst murder of all murders possible because these babies are completely defenseless, and I am entitled under my religious beliefs to use deadly force if necessary to save the innocent life of another," Lo wrote.
• Heavenly Father, while we believe that abortion is a heinous murder of a child, we pray for this situation to not inflame the passions of people on either side of this issue. We pray that instead, people will use this situation as a teaching tool and that people will receive the knowledge of what you say about life. Let our nation turn back to righteousness in all things - especially abortion.
• The lips of the wise disperse knowledge, but the heart of the fool does not do so. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight. (Proverbs 15:7, 8)
