Pittsburgh Grieves

Pittsburgh Grieves and a Nation Grieves, too

- Lord God, we lift up the needs listed here, and we pray in the Spirit over all that is being reported now out of Pittsburgh. Please comfort Your people, and give them hope again. Amen.

- "In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words . . ." (Romans 8:26)

1. Synagogue shooting 'will not break us. It will not ruin us,' rabbi says at vigil - CNN

The day after a gunman who spewed anti-Semitic rhetoric allegedly killed 11 congregants in a Pittsburgh synagogue, thousands mourned the dead, said their names out loud and proclaimed that hate wasn't welcome in their city.

The crowd at the Jewish Family and Community Services of Pittsburgh's interfaith gathering and vigil spilled out of the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum. Many stood in the drizzle outside during the ceremony.

At Sunday's service, the rabbis of the three congregations embraced after tearful tributes. Christian and Muslim leaders pledged to stand with members of the Jewish community. "What happened yesterday will not break us. It will not ruin us," said a tearful Rabbi Jonathan Perlman, leader of New Light Congregation, which worshiped in the synagogue. "We will continue to thrive and sing and workshop and learn together."

As Pittsburgh mourns in the coming months, Mayor William Peduto said the city will need to support the Jewish community and reject anti-Semitism. "We will be a city of compassion welcoming to all people, no matter your religion of where you family came from on this earth or your status."

He said the citizens of Pittsburgh are tough and proud of their blue-collar roots. "We will drive anti-Semitism and the hate of any people back to the basement, on their computer and away from the open discussions and dialogues around this city, around this state and around this country."(Read more)

2. These are the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting - CNN

. . . On Sunday, Karl Williams, Allegheny County's chief medical examiner, released the victims' identities in a news conference.

"To the victims' families, to the victims' friends, we're here as a community of one for you," said Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto. "We will be here to help you through this horrific episode. We'll get through this darkest day of Pittsburgh's history by working together."

Here are the victims of the Pittsburgh shooting:

3. Pittsburgh synagogue massacre suspect Bowers described as bland by unsuspecting neighbors - Fox News

The man accused of storming a Pittsburgh synagogue and killing 11 worshippers during an anti-Semitic rampage was described Sunday by neighbors as a loner who listened to talk radio, chain-smoked and was so bland in person that he bordered on being "forgettable."

"I really wish there was some type of clue," Chris Hall, who lives next door to accused killer Robert Bowers, told Fox News. Hall said Bowers "felt more comfortable expressing his views online rather than in person. If I were to wave to him and he said, 'All Jews must die' or there was an SS sticker on his car, I would have . . . reported him, but he didn't do any of those things."

Bowers faces 11 counts of criminal homicide, six counts of aggravated assault and 13 counts of ethnic intimidation in addition to federal counts that include weapons offenses and hate crime charges.

Hall said he hasn't slept since the massacre and worries there might be others who subscribe to the same hateful ideas and "hide in plain sight."

"I didn't think anyone could be capable of something like this," he said. "I'm still grappling with it. What if I had been more neighborly? But I don't know. (The gunman) could have just as easily started (shooting) here. It's a diverse neighborhood. It could have been target practice." (Read more)

4. 'I'm barely breathing': Synagogue survivor recounts terror - Fox News

A survivor of the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre described Sunday how he and other terrorized worshippers concealed themselves in a supply closet as the gunman stepped over the body of a man he had just shot and killed, entered their darkened hiding spot and looked around.

"I can't say anything, and I'm barely breathing," recalled Barry Werber, 76, in an interview with The Associated Press. "He didn't see us, thank God."

Speaking at a vigil in Pittsburgh on Sunday night, Tree of Life Rabbi Jeffrey Myers said about a dozen people had gathered in the synagogue's main sanctuary when Bowers walked in and began shooting. He said seven of his congregants were killed.

"My holy place has been defiled," he said.

Mayor Bill Peduto called it the "darkest day of Pittsburgh's history." (Read more)

5. PITTSBURGH SHOOTING: How to talk to your child about a traumatic event - WPXI.com/Pittsburgh

If your child is a witness to a mass casualty shooting or knows someone who was, it might be time to address the issue head on and talk about the trauma.

Some children express their emotions when confronted with a stressful situation and others don't.

Whatever the case, parents should be prepared to talk and, most importantly, listen to their children.

Social worker Juan Moore suggests parents continue to talk with their children about what happened for several days or weeks after the incident. "Even if you think your child is alright, there can be a delayed response," Moore said. (Read more)

7. ALERT! Israel Worried US Peace Plan Will Include Jerusalem as Palestinian Capital - Bridges for Peace

Israel is worried the American peace plan will include a declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of two states-Israel and Palestine-in an effort to convince Palestinian [Authority] president Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table.

The Palestinians have been boycotting Washington since President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. According to Israeli diplomatic officials, the Americans have since been trying to figure out how to pacify the Palestinian leader while at the same time also get the backing of the Arab world for the peace plan.

Israeli officials are worried that one of the enticements the White House might present to Abbas would be mentioning Jerusalem as the future capital of the Palestinian state.

"Trump wants a deal and he's very serious," a senior Israeli official said. "To the Americans, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is relatively easy to resolve and is ripe for the picking." (Read more)

- Pray that the US administration will proceed with great care and wisdom in presenting their peace initiative, making sure it is based on a true commitment to Israel and an understanding of God's heart toward Jerusalem. Pray that the Israeli government will not be intimidated into accepting a plan that is not in the best interests of its nation.

- "Like birds flying about, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem. Defending, He will also deliver it; passing over, He will preserve it." (Isaiah 31:5)

The Daily Brief

1. Trump: 'We must never allow political violence to take root in America' - Washington Times

The TV images could hardly be worse for the White House. The white van impounded by police as they arrested mail bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc Jr. was shown repeatedly on cable networks Friday, its windows covered with political stickers championing President Trump and showing gun crosshairs on Democrats such as Hillary Clinton and on CNN personalities. Rapidly on social media, people began calling him the "MAGA Bomber."

At the White House, Mr. Trump praised authorities for a speedy arrest called for Americans to unite. "We must never allow political violence to take root in America," Mr. Trump said at the start of a meeting with young black leaders. "And I'm committed to doing everything in my power as president to stop it, and stop it now."

"I want to applaud the FBI, Secret Service, Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorneys' Office for the Southern District of New York, the NYPD, and all Law Enforcement partners across the Country for their incredible work, skill and determination!" Mr. Trump posted. Speaking to reporters outside the White House, the president once again praised law enforcement for their efforts and said the arrest was "like finding a needle in a haystack." Trump: 'We must never allow political violence to take root in America.'(Read more)

- O righteous Father, we pray that You will uproot everything and everyone who attempts to plant any evil seed in the political soil of our government. Let us only serve as citizens of Your Kingdom government on earth. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.

- "Is not My word like as a fire? says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?" (Jeremiah 23:29)

2. Suspect Charged With 5 Federal Crimes in Mail Bombs Sent to Trump Opponents - Daily Signal

The Florida man arrested Friday in connection with 14 suspicious packages sent to Democrat politicians and other public figures has been charged with five federal crimes and faces up to 48 years in prison, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said. Cesar Sayoc Jr., 56, from the Miami suburb of Aventura, was charged with threats against former presidents and other persons, illegally mailing explosives, interstate transportation of an explosive, threatening interstate communications, and assaulting former and current federal officers.

"This is a law-and-order administration," Sessions said at a news conference at the Justice Department that also featured other senior law enforcement officials. "We will not tolerate such lawlessness, especially political violence." Sessions noted that the charges against Sayoc may change or expand as the investigation proceeds. "This is utterly unacceptable. Political violence or the threat of violence is antithetical to our vigorous system of self-government," the attorney general said.

So far, authorities have located 14 improvised explosive devices addressed to prominent critics of President Donald Trump. USA Today reported that Soyac, a registered Republican, has a string of arrests dating to 1991 for alleged theft and drug offenses and traffic infractions. The New York native was arrested in Palm Beach on retail theft charges in May 2015 and found guilty that October, records show. (Read more)

- Father God, rid our country of the evil acceleration of violence and murder. We bind the spirit of lawlessness under the Blood of Jesus and pray the Lord restores peace and love to our land. For we ask this in the Name of Jesus, amen.

- "For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them be taken in their pride: and for sin and lying which they speak." (Psalm 59:12)

3. Trump to go on eight-state blitz ahead of Election Day - Reuters

President Donald Trump will campaign in eight states in the final days before Nov. 6 U.S. congressional elections, putting most of his attention on tight races in which Republicans have a shot at winning Senate seats, White House officials said on Friday. From Wednesday until Election Day, the president will make campaign stops in Florida, Missouri, West Virginia, Indiana, Montana, Ohio, Georgia and Tennessee, the officials said.

Trump, who was making campaign stops in North Carolina on Friday night and in Illinois on Saturday, is scrambling to head off a Democratic push to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives and possibly the Senate. Officials said Trump wants to go to places where races are competitive and where he can make a difference.

Democrats had appeared to be in a good position to capture the House, but many races have tightened in recent weeks to the point that some analysts think it is conceivable Republicans could hang on to control. "We have a lot of Senate races where we're leading - races that frankly were going to be uncontested," Trump added. "There are a lot of people in the House, so we're going to see how that goes. But I think we're doing very well in the House." (Read more)

- Lord God, we ask that the Republicans will remain in control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. We trust that the Democrats will become weak and lose this election because of their lack of wholesome, godly standards. We pray in the Name of Jesus.

- "Trust in the Lord at all times, you people, pour out your hearts before Him: God is a refuge for us." (Psalm 62:8)

4. Donald Trump Thunders at Media for Trying to Smear His Supporters after Bomb Scares - Breitbart

President Donald Trump denounced the media on Friday for trying to pin the recent bomb scare on him and his supporters. "We have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister actions of one individual to score political points against me and the Republican party," Trump said.

Trump condemned political violence and called for an end to the politics of personal destruction, especially from the media. "Political violence must never ever be allowed in America and I'll do everything in my power to stop it," he said. "The media has a major role to play, whether they want to or not."

"They have a major role to play as far as tone, as far as everything," Trump said. "The media's constant unfair coverage, deep hostility, and negative attacks only serve to drive people apart and to undermine healthy debate." Trump was fiercely defensive of his supporters, reminding them of the media's tone against them. "The media has tried to attack the incredible Americans who support our movement to give power back to the people," Trump said. "Our supporters are some of the most honest, wonderful, principled, hard-working, patriotic people on the face of God's earth." (Read more)

- Righteous Father in heaven, we trust that You will withstand all the evil forces of the shadow government who have control of the media, which pours lies upon lies into the streams of the news. Cut off their lines. Raise up a wall of holy angels against them. We pray in the Name of Jesus, amen.

- "But the king shall rejoice in God; everyone that swears by Him shall glory; but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped." (Psalm 63:11)

5. Watch: Crowd Full of Young Black People Erupts When Trump Walks In - Western Journal

The cultural shift toward conservatism within the black community is very real . . . and it's picking up steam faster than the left wants to admit.

For months, we've pointed to examples of how African-Americans, long considered almost guaranteed to vote Democrat, have been rejecting the left's narratives and are increasingly climbing aboard the Trump Train.

Now, President Donald Trump himself is proving just how powerful this shift has become.

During a large gathering of black Americans at the White House organized by the Young Black Leadership Summit, the president made a much-anticipated appearance - and the largely black crowd gave him a rock star reception.

. . . Videos like these destroy the flimsy narrative that pro-U.S. nationalism and proud patriotism are somehow "white only" values. That's utter hogwash. The president's concept of putting America first applies to all Americans, no matter their skin color, but don't expect the left to acknowledge this anytime soon. (Read more)

- Thank You Lord for this report! Thank you that people's eyes are being opened to the truth, and are not swayed by negative narratives.

- " . . . so that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, that the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened." (Ephesians 1:17-18)

6. State of the Midterms: Republicans see glimmer of hope in Florida contests, as NJ heats up - Fox News

Republicans are starting to see a ray of sunshine in Florida, despite indications that the GOP nominees in the state's marquee Senate and gubernatorial contests are struggling. In the race for governor, Trump-aligned Ron DeSantis has been trailing Democrat Andrew Gillum in virtually every poll since the summer. But a survey conducted for Gray Television by Strategic Research Associates showed DeSantis ahead by 3 points, 48-45 percent. This is within the 3.46 point margin of error - but comes as another state poll puts Gillum ahead by just 1 point, reflecting, at the least, a horse race.

Democrats continue to hold the edge in the race for the House. The Real Clear Politics map shows 205 House seats tilting Democratic, and 199 tilting Republican, with 31 in the "toss-up" column. Fox News' Power Rankings similarly puts the split at 207 seats for Democrats and 197 for Republicans, and the rest up in the air. It takes 218 seats to claim a majority.

Meanwhile, another race once seen as a lock for Democrats may be growing more competitive. Recent polls show New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez' lead over Republican Bob Hugin narrowing, as national Democratic groups scramble to pump money into the contest and keep the seat blue. Cook Political Report, reflecting how unexpectedly competitive the contest has become, announced Friday it is moving the race from "lean Democratic" to "toss-up." (Read more)

- Almighty God, we trust fully in Your power to keep the elections free from sinful tampering of the votes. Lord, strengthen the Republican votes for the House above 218 seats, even 220. Give America a vote of victory for righteousness in this election. We trust in the Name of Jesus.

- "Truly our soul waits upon God: from Him comes our salvation. He only is our rock and our salvation; He is our defense; we shall not be greatly moved." (Psalm 62:1-2)

7. Vice President Mike Pence Asks Students to Pray for America Amid Division - Christian Headlines

Vice President Mike Pence visited Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Wednesday and asked the students to pray for America. While at an event to show support to Republican US Representative Scott Taylor, Pence called for unity among people despite political and social discrepancies.

The evangelical Vice President went on to remind the crowd about how important it is to pray for America and the nation's leaders. He said, "The sweetest thing the president and I ever hear is when people grab a hand and say, 'I'm praying for you.'"

He then asked the crowd to do just that. Noting how divided the nation has become, Pence said, "I actually just encourage you, if you bow the head and bend the knee in the next 13 days, just pray for America." (Read more)

- Almighty Father, we pray that Your presence and Holy Spirit will descend upon America now and hold us as a united family under God the Father of all. In Jesus' Name we pray.

- "Because You have been our help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings will we rejoice." (Psalm 63:7)

8. Trump, Azar Advance Ambitious Health Agenda - Free Beacon

President Trump's visit to the Department of Health and Human Services Thursday is the latest move in his administration's fight to lower prescription drug costs, increase choice and flexibility within health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare, and defeat progressive calls for Medicare for All.

The president's point man in these efforts is Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, who replaced Tom Price last January. An attorney with extensive experience both within government and the pharmaceutical industry, Azar is advancing the Trump health agenda along multiple fronts.

"Obamacare is broken. It cannot be fixed," Azar told the Washington Free Beacon in a recent interview. Nevertheless, the administration is trying to make the ACA work better until, or if, it is repealed. Earlier this week, the administration announced it will give states new abilities to opt out of Obamacare requirements. Azar has highlighted actions by the Trump administration to stabilize insurance premiums.

On his first day in office, the president signed an executive order "to run the ACA as efficiently as possible, give states more flexibility, and minimize the costs the law imposed on Americans." Premiums for the "benchmark" silver health care plan will drop by 2 percent next year.

Finally, the Trump administration has tried to increase price transparency as part of a broader effort to lower the cost of prescription drugs. "It's a top priority for the president and for me," Azar told the Free Beacon. (Read more)

- Father in heaven, strengthen President Trump's efforts to win God's favor over the medical industry. Lord, You showed me that Obamacare was turned to sawdust several years ago. They have attempted to raise up substitutes but have failed. The Lord will create a new medical policy. In Jesus' Name we pray, amen.

- "For You have been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. We will abide in God's tabernacle forever: we will trust in the covert of Your wings."
(Psalm 61:3-4)

9. Shock: White House Chief of Staff "Voted For Hillary", Still Blocking Trump From Alternative Media - Newzsentinel.com

A top Republican adviser has revealed the shocking fact that Trump White House Chief of Staff John Kelly was a liberal who voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Speaking to Fox Business Host Lou Dobbs, Republican campaign consultant Ed Rollins shockingly claimed that, according to his sources, Kelly supported the failed Clinton campaign and may actually be a sort of deep state operative in the White House to specifically take out the Trump agenda.

"What I've heard from sources inside who know Kelly, who is an honorable man and was a good general, he didn't vote for Trump, he voted for Hillary." Rollins said. "So I don't think he is basically is a Trump supporter or ideologically a Trump supporter."

For his part, Kelly has long been the subject of reports detailing his personal efforts to specifically block the flow of alternative media information from ever reaching Trump's desk. As investigator report and Naval intelligence officer Jack Posobiec reported in August (three weeks before the mainstream media), White House staffers were being threatened for termination if they passed along articles from websites such as Infowars and Breitbart. (Read more)

- Almighty Father, we cry out to You to dismiss each and every traitor, conspirator, deceiver, or an advocate of satan who has been placed on the inside realm of President Trump's most confidential informers. Father, dispatch holy angels to come from heaven to weed out all these people and replace them with loyal, honest and godly people. We pray and trust in the Name of Jesus.

- "Hide President Trump from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity; who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words; that they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not." (Psalm 64:2-4)

10. CBN News Embeds with the Caravan: What We Discovered About UN Involvement, Foreigners and Felons - CBN News

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is sending 800 or more troops to the southern border. That comes after President Trump says he's "bringing out the military" to address what he's calling a national emergency at the border as the massive migrant caravan approaches. Additional troops would provide logistical support to border patrol agents, including vehicles, tents and equipment. There are currently about 2,000 National Guard troops already at the border.

Some are asking questions about who is in the caravan, so CBN News asked our contributing correspondent Chuck Holton to check it out. He caught up with the caravan in the Mexican city of Tapachula. "I want to try and clarify some of what you've been hearing in the news media about this caravan moving north into the United States.

First of all, the people in this caravan are not being paid to join the caravan. Their payoff comes when they get to the US," Holton said. Holton spoke to numerous people in the caravan who said they joined the trek because they saw advertising for it on social media or heard about it on the news. He says the caravan has been organized by opposition political elements within Honduras who are supported by Venezuela, as well as a consortium of left-wing pro-immigration groups.

"They are however being facilitated and enabled by groups like the UN, by groups like other NGOs and by church groups who are feeding them and providing them support on their journey north," he said.

"Now the other questions have been: 'Are there felons, are there bad guys in this group?' And I can tell you it didn't take me long to find four or five right away who are absolute felons who are coming north to try to get back into the United States," Holton discovered. The Somali migrant spoke to CBN News in English, saying he was heading to the US in a few days. "We want to take some rest, you know. We are tired, been on the road," he said. The Somali man revealed he began his journey north from Brazil. Holton also spoke with others from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Eritrea and Pakistan who are joining the caravan to the US. (Read more)

- Almighty God, we trust that You will establish a wall of fire around the borders of the United States of America that will keep out all militant immigrants. Turn them around and send them back to their own homes and not receive payment from the enemies of the U.S. to destroy us. We seal this by the power of Jesus' Name.

- "Because of God's strength will I wait upon Him; for God is my defense."
(Psalm 59:9)

11. Did McCabe set up Rosenstein? - The Hill

According to FBI executives, Comey personally fast-tracked McCabe's career into the deputy director position. McCabe was not happy that the president fired his boss and that Rosenstein provided the ammo. Comey, who has urged America to vote Democrat, apparently liked what he saw in McCabe, who was overseeing the Clinton email investigation in the Washington Field Office, even though his wife, a Democratic candidate for Virginia Senate, had accepted over $1 million bundled together by longtime Clinton loyalist Terry McAuliffe for her campaign just two weeks prior to the 2015 election that she lost.

McCabe apparently couldn't imagine why anyone might see a possible conflict and so did not recuse himself from the Clinton and other politically fraught investigations. Instead, he doubled down with unprecedented actions. Once installed as deputy director, he pulled the Clinton email investigation out of the field office and directly into his office, using headquarters execs such as former agent Peter Strzok to aggressively wind down the investigation.

He then personally opened three other politically-charged FBI investigations. [For the record, FBI deputy directors don't open cases and run them out of their offices. The Department of Justice [DOJ] inspector general since has criticized McCabe for actions "inconsistent with typical investigative strategy."] (Read more)

- Almighty Father, we ask that You will bind and break the power of lawlessness off every facet of our government through the powerful Blood of Jesus. We redeem our land from lies, forgeries and personnel who have twisted typical investigative strategies. We pray in the Name of Jesus, amen.

- "Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly; for He it is that shall tread down our enemies." (Psalm 60:11-12)

12. New group of migrants heads for US after leaving El Salvador - The Guardian UK

A new group of migrants bound for the US has set off from El Salvador, following thousands of other Central Americans fleeing poverty and violence who have taken similar journeys in recent weeks.

The group of more than 300 Salvadorans left the capital San Salvador on Sunday. A larger group of mostly Hondurans, estimated to number at least 3,500, left that country in mid-October and is now in southern Mexico. That group has become a key issue in US midterm elections.

A third group has been moving through Guatemala, at one point numbering more than 1,000 before beginning to fragment. Hundreds broke through a Guatemala border gate in Tecun Umanand on Sunday afternoon were on the bridge into Mexico. (Read more)

- Father God, we take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and we sever these new alliances away from each other in the Spirit. Let these migrants find work in their own countries, Lord, in Your name, amen.

- "The Lord is righteous; He has cut in two the cords of the wicked." (Psalm 129:4)

Editor's note: All the information and the prayers found below were offered this week by Intercessors for Israel. You can find their prayer alert by going here.

Peace Plans - With continued delays over the unveiling of the much-trumpeted US peace plan, the French have announced that they will come up with one of their own.

- Show Israel's leaders what to do in the face of all this foreign interference.

- May nothing come into the light except what You permit and in Your perfect timing.

- Bring to nothing everything which is not from You! May the meddling of the nations, however well-meaning, fall flat!

- Hedge-in President Trump and his team and guard them against forcing any plan on Israel.

- Now therefore, be wise, O kings; be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. (Psalm 2:10-11)

- And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it. (Zechariah 12:3)

Massive rescue mission underway after Indonesia's Lion Air crashes into sea: report

An Indonesian jet carrying 188 passengers and crew crashed into the sea Monday shortly after takeoff from Jakarta, prompting a major rescue effort in the region, Indonesia's disaster agency reported.

An agency spokesman posted photos of the debris including a crushed smartphone, books, bags, and parts of the aircraft fuselage that had been collected by search and rescue vessels.

He said the flight was carrying 181 passengers, including one child and two babies. It was not immediately clear how many casualties there were.

A Message from our Senate Chaplain

Christians Should Be 'Leading the Charge' in Returning to Civility, Senate Chaplain Barry Black Says

Senate Chaplain Barry Black believes that the United States has a "serious problem" when it comes to political incivility and that Christians should be leading the way when it comes to ushering civility back into society.

Black, who has served as the chaplain for the upper house of the federal legislature for the past 15 years and is a retired U.S. Navy officer, recently spoke with the Christian Broadcasting Network regarding his concerns about the increasing tension and political incivility that is seemingly toxifying public discourse in America.

"When, because of political differences, people can't with their families enjoy the freedoms that this nation provides, we've got a serious problem," Black told the news outlet.

In a time in which Trump administration officials are being kicked out of restaurants, harassed, and lawmakers are engaging in heated back-and-forths with the president on Twitter, Black says that a lot of the incivility on display today has do with "arrogance, swagger, trash talking."

"I think it's critically important that we lower the decibels," Black said. "Proverbs 15:1 says, 'A soft answer turns away anger,' and we obey the Golden Rule."

The Golden Rule, as written in Matthew 7:12, states: "Do to others what you would have them do to you."

"I think Christians should be leading the charge in returning to civility by practicing what we teach and preach," Black continued. "Many times we have the rhetoric, but our actions will not back up the rhetoric."

Black is encouraged to see some of his own Senate constituents - both Republican and Democrat - engaging civilly when they participate in a weekly Senate prayer breakfast. About 25 to 30 lawmakers participate in the weekly gathering.

"There are many, many lawmakers who are modeling civility," Black said. "The challenge is that the legislative process by its very nature is adversarial."

"One senator said it's very difficult to pray for one another and then to leave the prayer breakfast and go up to the chamber and verbally stab that person whose hand you've just been holding," Black added. "We end the prayer breakfast joined hands praying."

. . . In his interview with CBN, Black asserted that American citizens must remember that they are called to pray for the nation's political leaders, no matter which party is in power. Black explained that the problems the nation faces "require supernatural wisdom" and require "divine guidance."

"I think our citizens need to remember 2 Chronicles 7:14, and this is a promise that God will supernaturally bring healing to our nation, and that means all the branches of our government, and healing means greater civility," Black said. "Whether the branches want healing or not, God says if My folk will do those things, they will bring healing to our nation." (Christian Post) Read more.

Classic Hymns

GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU

"It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." (Deuteronomy 31:8)

Lyrics

1 Be not dismayed whate'er betide, God will take care of you; Beneath his wings of love abide, God will take care of you.

Refrain

God will take care of you,
Through ev'ry day,
O'er all the way;
He will take care of you,
God will take care of you.

2 Through days of toil when heart does fail, God will take care of you; When dangers fierce your path assail, God will take care of you. [Refrain]
3 All you may need he will provide, God will take care of you; Nothing you ask will be denied, God will take care of you. [Refrain]

4 No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you; Lean, weary one, upon his breast, God will take care of you. [Refrain]

Category 5 typhoon Yutu devastates the Northern Marianas in worst storm
to hit any part of U.S. since 1935

Typhoon Yutu's 180 mph winds overturned cars, knocked down hundreds of power poles and left an island of thousands without a medical center and another without an airport. Buildings were reduced to haphazard piles of tin and wood; if a structure wasn't made of concrete, one resident said, it was probably wiped out by the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit any part of the United States since 1935.

Yutu spent roughly seven hours thrashing the small islands of Saipan and Tinian, the most populous part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory, early Thursday morning local time. Residents of the islands north of Guam are accustomed to typhoons but quickly attested that this was the worst they'd seen.

Yutu's gigantic eye enveloped much of Saipan and all of Tinian, leaving the islands "mangled," as one local official told The Washington Post. Rescue and relief operations have begun, but officials say their efforts are being hampered by dangerous weather and widespread destruction, which includes "extensive damage to critical infrastructure," according to an update Thursday from the governor's office. One woman on Saipan, who took shelter in an abandoned building that collapsed on her, died during the storm.

"We just went through one of the worst storms I've seen in all my experience in emergency management," local emergency management official Gerald J. Deleon Guerrero said in a statement.

According to figures released by the Weather Underground website, Yutu was tied with the fifth-highest wind speed of any storm on record as it made landfall. Only a few storms, including 2013′s Super Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines, have been stronger, and even then not by much. For the United States, just one storm - the 1935 Labor Day hurricane that hit the Florida Keys - is believed to have been more powerful.

The Northern Mariana Islands are the most recent U.S. territory to have been pummeled by a strong hurricane in the past two years. The U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico suffered calamitous strikes in the 2017 hurricane season, and Guam was recently struck by Typhoon Mangkhut. (Washington Post) Read more

Francis Chan:

The Chinese Underground Church is "Unstoppable" Despite Persecution

The underground Church in China is "unstoppable" despite extreme persecution because Chinese Christians are willing to suffer for the Gospel, Francis Chan has said.

Several years ago, the Crazy Love author sold his house and spent a year traveling through Southeast Asia, visiting churches and interacting with church leaders. Recently, he told attendees gathered at the "Rethink Church/Rethink Mission" event at McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, that during his time in China, he met with the pastor of an underground church.

The pastor told him that when China temporarily loosened its restrictions on religious freedom, he decided to hold a public, large church service "just like the Americans do." The church was attended by 2,000 Believers in Shanghai, which had "never been done," Chan said. However, it wasn't long before the Chinese government arrested the pastor and closed the church, forcing the congregation to once again worship underground. (GospelHerald.com)

About Capitol Hill Prayer Partners

Our Mission Statement

Capitol Hill Prayer Partners (CHPP) is a ministry which is positioned on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., helping members of the Body of Christ to "pray for those in authority over us" in our federal government. Our primary purpose is to offer intercession on site for the members of Congress and their staffs each day that the Senate and the House of Representatives are in session; and our chief prayer focus is that "God's will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." [Matthew 6:10].

Because Jesus Christ has shed His blood for all, we, too, pray for ALL, in a nonpartisan manner. Also, because the scriptures indicate that "the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 4:17), we are confident that fervent prayer, offered in the halls of the highest chambers of government in our land, can avail much for America. Capitol Hill Prayer Partners welcomes those who feel called to join us, engaging in this strategic work of intercession for our nation: "For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained of God." [Romans 13:1]
