Focus on Israel

1. Settlers defiant after Canadian court rules their vineyards aren't in Israel - Times of Israel

Vered Ben Sa'adon's grandmother Liesje de Vries lived in Holland when the Holocaust arrived in her native land. She survived the war by scurrying from one hiding place to another.

Three generations later, Ben Sa'adon co-owns a boutique winery in the West Bank settlement of Rechelim, whose products can be found in selected stores in the US, Britain, Germany, Hong Kong and Canada. The vintages produced by the Tura Winery proudly state, on the front label, that they are "from the Land of Israel."

But two weeks ago, the Federal Court in Ottawa issued a ruling that could keep her products off Canadian shelves if she doesn't agree to change the label.

2. Israel planning 'security wall' on Gaza border - Israel National News

Israel's defense establishment has decided to build another barrier in the Gaza envelope, this time a security wall against infiltration of terrorists into towns and communities located near the Gaza border.

According to a report Monday on Channel 12 News, the wall will be six meters high and nine kilometers in length. It will run adjacent to localities in the Gaza envelope and along Highway 34 between Yad Mordechai and Nahal Oz.

The wall is supposed to be another barrier in the space between the Gaza border and the localities, which should delay terrorists during an attempted infiltration if they are able to cross the border on their way to carry out an attack.

3. Facing firing, Smotrich apologizes to Netanyahu for calling him 'weak' - Times Of Israel

Transportation Minister Bezalel Smotrich apologized Monday for his Twitter diatribe against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as the premier's Likud party said Smotrich would have been fired from the cabinet if he did not walk back his comments.

Smotrich assailed Netanyahu on Sunday for the temporary closure of the Temple Mount holy site to Jewish visitors and a court ruling barring a gender-segregated concert from being held at a public park, accusing him of being "weak" and showing "zero leadership."

Netanyahu was reportedly angered by the remarks and considered firing Smotrich, but after the two met Monday the transportation minister retained his job and seat on the high-level security cabinet.

4. Netanyahu tells Likud MKs: Compare Shaked to Livni - Jerusalem Post

Likud ministers and Knesset members should attack Yamina leader Ayelet Shaked in interviews by comparing her to former minister Tzipi Livni, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told them in a meeting at the Likud's Tel Aviv headquarters on Tuesday.

Netanyahu revealed to the Likud politicians that the party's strategy would continue to be to woo voters away from its satellite parties on the Right, especially Yamina, which he said was a fair target because it is not at risk of failing to cross the electoral threshold. He said the Shaked comparison to Livni could be effective, because of Livni's reputation for shifting from party to party.

"She [Shaked] is the new Tzipi Livni," Netanyahu told the MKs. "She shopped herself between parties. She has no principles, and she might not recommend me after the election."

Netanyahu's statements followed Shaked's admission in an Army Radio interview on Tuesday that after her New Right Party did not cross the threshold in the April election, her plan was to join Likud but not run in the next election and build herself up gradually in the party.

5. Israel's Interior Security Minister Advocates Right of Jews to Pray on Temple Mount in Jerusalem - Algemeiner

Israel's interior security minister endorsed changing the status quo on the Temple Mount in an interview on Tuesday, calling it an "injustice" that Jews are allowed to enter the holy site but are prohibited from praying.

Speaking during a radio interview in the wake of violent clashes on the Mount after Jewish worshippers sought to enter on the Tisha B'Av fast on Sunday, Israeli news site Wallaquoted the minister, Gilad Erdan, as saying, "I think there's an injustice in the status quo that has existed there since '67, and we must act in order to change it."

According to the status quo set up after the Six Day War in 1967, the Islamic Waqf exercises authority over the holy site. In recent years a "Temple Mount activist" movement has arisen among religious Jews that seeks to secure prayer rights and equal access to the Mount for Jewish worshipers.

6. Man arrested after posting 'hunting guide' of Colorado synagogues online - Israel Hayom

A man facing charges of federal pornography was interrogated by the FBI at the beginning of the year after it was found that he posted a "hunting guide" online, with a list of synagogues online. The "Montana Hunting Guide" listed names and addresses of Colorado synagogues and mosques, many in the Denver area.

Wesley Gilreath, 29, told investigators that he "wanted the white race to win at life." Gilreath was originally arrested after hundreds of photos and video of child pornography was found on his phone, which he left on a public bus in Boulder in May.

According to police records, workers who attempted to find information about the phone's owner were startled to find thousands of pictures and videos of child pornography on the device, they then reached out to Boulder police, who in turn alerted the FBI.

1. Barr Promises Fast Track for Federal Death Penalty - FreeBeacon

The Trump administration is pushing for legislation that would accelerate certain federal death penalty cases. The new legislation is expected around Labor Day, according to Attorney General William P. Barr, and will specifically expedite the use of the death penalty for offenders who murder police officers or commit mass murders.

Speaking before the Fraternal Order of Police's biennial conference on Monday, Barr told the assembled officers that his office was well aware of a recent increase in assaults on police officers, and emphasized that the administration "will not tolerate violence against police." "We will be proposing legislation providing that in cases of mass murder, or in cases of murder of a law enforcement officer, there will be a timetable for judicial proceedings that will allow imposition of any death sentence without undue delay," the attorney general said. "Punishment must be swift and certain." (Read more)

- Father, we pray this legislation will be an effective deterrent to those who would target police officers or commit mass murder.

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)

2. FTC Chief Says Willing to Break Up Companies Amid Big Tech Probe - Bloomberg

The head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said he's prepared to break up major technology platforms if necessary by undoing their past mergers as his agency investigates whether companies including Facebook Inc. are harming competition.

FTC Chairman Joe Simons, who is leading a broad review of the technology sector, said in an interview Tuesday that breaking up a company is challenging, but could be the right remedy to rein in dominant companies and restore competition.

Giant tech firms are coming under increasing scrutiny in Washington over a wave of acquisitions of startups. Antitrust experts and lawmakers argue that the deals have allowed the companies to shut down competition by buying -- and eliminating -- emerging rivals. (Read more)

- Father God, we ask You to give Chairman Simons wisdom to know how to increase competition among our big tech companies.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. (James 1:5)

3. Trump Administration Eases Regulatory Burdens of Endangered Species Act- Epoch Times

Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt said Aug. 12 the Trump administration is moving forward with a business-friendly regulatory overhaul of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that officials say "without compromising conservation" will ease some of the burdens landowners and other businesses face when operating in areas affected by the almost 46-year-old federal law.

A Supreme Court ruling last year that the federal government overreached by limiting the development of private land in Louisiana to help save a rare frog that doesn't actually live there appears to have set in motion the newly unveiled regulatory changes affecting how the Endangered Species Act will be administered.

The new regulations would clarify the standards used in listing and reclassifying species, as well as designating a "critical habitat," a term used in the statute to describe "specific geographic areas that contain features essential to the conservation of an endangered or threatened species and that may require special management and protection." (Read more)

- Father, we thank You for this common sense rollback of regulations and pray our nation will be good stewards of Your creation.

And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky." (Genesis 1:20)

4. Trump Names Joseph Maguire Acting National Intelligence Director - Daily Caller

President Donald Trump named Joseph Maguire, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, the acting national intelligence chief Thursday after CIA official Sue Gordon resigned. Gordon, the principal deputy director of national intelligence, reportedly told the White House she was planning on resigning Thursday after she learned she would be passed up for the director position, according to NBC News.

"Admiral Maguire has a long and distinguished career in the military, retiring from the U.S. Navy in 2010," he continued. "He commanded at every level, including the Naval Special Warfare Command. He has also served as a National Security Fellow at Harvard University. I have no doubt he will do a great job!"

"Sue has announced she will be leaving on August 15, which coincides with the retirement of Dan Coats. A new Acting Director of National Intelligence will be named shortly," the president continued in reference to former DNI Dan Coats, whom Trump considered firing for months. (Read more)

- Father, we ask You to bless Mr. Maguire as he serves our nation as National Intelligence Director.

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. and in all your getting, get understanding. exalt her, and she will promote you; she will bring you honor, when you embrace her. (Proverbs 4:7-8)

5. New director of National Reconnaissance Office sworn in - C4ISRnet

Christopher Scolese was sworn in as the 19th director of the National Reconnaissance Office Aug. 5. The NRO is the agency in charge of acquiring and maintaining satellites on behalf of the intelligence community.

"I am truly honored to have this opportunity to serve the nation as director of the NRO. I am looking forward to fulfilling the great responsibility ahead of me and helping the NRO accomplish its mission to provide innovative overhead intelligence systems that help keep our nation safe and secure," said Scolese in a statement. Prior to joining the NRO, Scolese was the director of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.(Read more)
- Father, we ask You to bless Mr. Scolese as he serves our nation as National Reconnaissance Director.

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. (Ecclesiastes 4:12)

6. Iranian Citizen Pleads Guilty to Exporting Illicit Tech to Iran - FreeBeacon

An Iranian national pleaded guilty on Friday to engaging in a plot to export sensitive technology to Iran in violation of multiple sanctions, according to the Justice Department. Negar Ghodskani appeared in court and issued a guilty plea in what federal investigators called "a conspiracy to illegally export controlled technology from the United States to Iran."

"As part of the conspiracy, Ghodskani falsely represented herself as an employee of Green Wave to U.S. companies in order to acquire export-controlled technology from the United States," the DOJ said. "To accomplish these acquisitions, Ghodskani, Jalali and others concealed the ultimate destination and end users of the exported technology."

The Iranian national is said to have "contacted producers and distributors of the sought-after technology, solicited purchase agreements, and negotiated the purchase and delivery of the goods with the U.S. seller," according to the DOJ. "When received by Green Wave in Malaysia, the goods were repackaged and unlawfully exported from Malaysia to Fana Moj in Tehran, Iran." (Read more)
- Father God, thank You for alerting us about this situation and allowing us to capture this individual. We pray all such spies will be found and our nation will remain protected.

The wicked spies upon the righteous and seeks to kill him. The Lord will not leave him in his hand or let him be condemned when he is judged. (Psalm 37:32-33)

7. Convoy of Armored Chinese Police Vehicles Masses near Hong Kong - Breitbart

Residents of Hong Kong have been nervously watching Chinese military and police movements near their borders, fearing each new report of personnel or vehicles arriving near the border city of Shenzhen could be the prelude to a Tiananmen Square-style crackdown.

The latest apprehensions involve a massive convoy of armed police vehicles, which mainland sources say are merely participating in a "large-scale drill." The Chinese Communist newspaper People's Daily published a video of the convoy, which also included unarmed transports and excavation vehicles - quite useful for knocking things over, such as the sort of barricades constructed by Hong Kong protesters.

China's tightly-controlled media are sending decidedly mixed signals to Hong Kong about these "exercises." The Global Times, for example, followed up its reassuring article about harmless, disarmed APCs rolling into Shenzhen for peaceful training exercises with a belligerent social media post boasting the People's Armed Police are ready to crack down on "riots, disturbance, major violence, and crime and terrorism-related social security issues," all of which are derogatory terms Chinese officials have used to describe the Hong Kong demonstrations. (Read more)
- Father God, the people of Hong Kong cry out for freedom, and many are asking You to intervene on their behalf. We ask that You hear all our prayers and deliver them.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. (Psalm 34:17)

8. Ebola now curable after trials of drugs in DRC, say scientists - The Guardian

Ebola can no longer be called an incurable disease, scientists have said, after two of four drugs being trialed in the major outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were found to have significantly reduced the death rate.

ZMapp, used during the massive Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, has been dropped along with Remdesivir after two monoclonal antibodies, which block the virus, had substantially more effect, said the World Health Organization and the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which was a co-sponsor of the trial.

The trial in the DRC, which started in November, has now been stopped. All Ebola treatment units will now use the two monoclonal antibody drugs. (Read more)
- Praise You, Lord, for a cure to this devastating disease! We pray all those who are sick will seek out this help and save their lives.

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. (Luke 19:11)

9. Pro-life movie 'Unplanned' takes No. 1 spot on Amazon's Best Sellers Drama DVDs - Christian Post On Monday afternoon, "Unplanned" became the #1 Best Seller overall for DVD's on Amazon. "Unplanned" tells the true story of former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson who quit her leadership position at the abortion provider to become a pro-life advocate. Johnson went on to start the nonprofit And Then There Were None to help other women leave the abortion industry.

The movie exposing the truth behind abortion was given an R rating even though filmmakers were certain they were making a PG-13 film. But despite the mature rating, the film has been very successful in family and faith audiences.

"Unplanned" stars Ashley Bratcher as Johnson and was written and directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, who also wrote "God's Not Dead" and "God's Not Dead 2." The movie was partially funded by Michael Lindell, a born-again Christian and the founder of the company MyPillow. (Read more)
- Father God, we pray this important movie will continue to change hearts and minds, until no one even considers ending a pregnancy anymore.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. (Deuteronomy 20:19)

10. Report: Trump wants Israel to ban Omar and Tlaib over BDS - World Israel News

In response to announcements that two outspoken critics of Israel in the U.S. Congress, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, are preparing to visit the Jewish state this month, President Donald Trump reportedly expressed dismay that Israel was planning to permit them entry.

According to a Channel 13 report, Trump was upset that Israel was opting not to invoke a law that permits the government to block supporters of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, such as Omar and Tlaib, from entering Israel.

The Channel 13 report claimed that Trump maintained if Omar and Tlaib promote boycotts of Israel then "Israel should boycott them," quoting unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter. (Read more)

- Father, we thank You for the wisdom You are bestowing upon our President. We ask that Israel reconsider its decision to let these two women, who both hate the Jews, enter that land. Amen.

" . . . truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:19,20)

11. Shots Fired at Texas ICE Office with People Inside the Building - Western Journal

Federal law enforcement is investigating after shots were fired into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in San Antonio early Tuesday morning. "The shooting took place around 3 a.m. Tuesday on the 1700 block of NE Loop 410 near Brookhaven Drive," Sinclair Broadcast Group San Antonio reported. "Investigators say that multiple shots were fired on two floors targeting ICE officials."

The outlet reported that another building was also targeted.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating what happened, with authorities reviewing surveillance footage of the surrounding area. (Read more)

- Father God, we thank You that no one was injured or killed in this incident. We pray that the perpetrator(s) be found, incarcerated, and brought to justice. In Your Name, amen.

The things people say

My mother always told me, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." It's a good axiom to live by, although her son would grow up to be an investigative journalist who had a lot of things to say that some people may not consider nice. Hey, I try. One of the horrible things that has happened in our country is the nonsense, visceral, slanderous culture of late where it seems that my mother's saying has been twisted to: "If you can't say something mean, don't say anything at all." Now there is enough of this ill-will being pushed into the 24/7 news cycle that very few people can escape the poisonous impact of the things people say, and who is saying them. Here are just a few, judge for yourself.

During CNN's "Situation Room" Monday, Representative Denny Heck (D-WA) said, "the president hates all immigrants, except his mother- and father-in-law and his wife, evidently. He hates them whether they're here without documents, they're here with a green card, they're here seeking asylum. He hates them all." On Monday's broadcast of MSNBC's "All In," 2020 presidential candidate former HUD Secretary and former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro (D) said, "this administration is not just against undocumented immigrants, it's also against legal immigrants. And it goes back to what he's displayed from the beginning of his political career, from birtherism, to the way he started his campaign, to those comments about the Mexican-American judge, to his comments about Ilhan Omar and her colleagues. He wants a whiter, wealthier nation."
The Washington Post, owned by billionaire Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, released an editorial this week blasted enforcement of national immigration law as "cruel" and said U.S. businesses should not be deprived of employing illegal alien workers. Bette Midler tweeted Sunday, "After two years, we are all experts on Donald Trump!!! A racist, white supremacist nutjob with a coterie of criminals to enable him." Monday on MSNBC's "MTP Daily," network political analyst Zerlina Maxwell said, "If you are supporting a president that is caging brown babies and you are okay with that, then I'm sorry, that is supporting racist policies, and that is not distinct from supporting a racist president. I think that often we try to get into this semantic game because people take the label of racist so personally as if I'm saying that you're a terrible human and that you're evil."
Presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) Sunday said Trump, "has been fueling the flames of hate. I said recently on the issue of El Paso . . . when people ask me is he responsible for these killings? Well no he obviously didn't pull the trigger, but he's sure been tweeting out the ammunition." Actress Sophia Bush tweeted about the recent mass shootings: "Trump is to blame. His incitement of hate is grounds enough for impeachment." In reading these quotes, and they are just a small sampling, who is spewing forth the hate and incitement? Notice how the media is a willing vehicle. As Jesus said in Matthew 15:18-20, "But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart . . . For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies"

Have a blessed and powerful day,

NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE

"He saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to Heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it." (Genesis 28:11-12)

Lyrics

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee! E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down, Darkness be over me, my rest a stone. Yet in my dreams I'd be nearer, my God to Thee.

Refrain

There let the way appear, steps unto Heav'n; All that Thou sendest me, in mercy given; Angels to beckon me nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise, Out of my stony griefs Bethel I'll raise; So by my woes to be nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain

Or, if on joyful wing cleaving the sky, Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I'll fly, Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.

Refrain
There in my Father's home, safe and at rest, There in my Savior's love, perfectly blest; Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee.

PERSEID METEOR UPDATE

Last night, NASA's network of all-sky meteor cameras recorded 139 Perseid fireballs over the USA. At the same time, members of the International Meteor Organization counted more than 90 Perseids per hour in ideally dark-sky sites. These facts suggest that the Perseid meteor shower is peaking on August 13th, as expected. If it's dark where you live, be alert for Perseids! (Spaceweather.com) Read more.

'Helping Child Victims Escape' through Operation Independence Day: FBI Rescues over 100 Sex Trafficking Victims

"We are here to rescue children, and we are here to build good cases against traffickers. If we have developed enough rapport with the victim, we build a case against their trafficker and hopefully charge them in federal court." -Jeanette Milazzo, a special agent in Houston's Field Office

[ChristianHeadlines.com] The FBI rescued over 100 sex trafficking victims across the United States in the month of July. According to a press release, the initiative, called "Operation Independence Day" recovered juveniles and arrested 67 suspected traffickers.

"The FBI is fiercely focused on recovering child victims and arresting the sex traffickers who exploit them," FBI Director Christopher Wray said. "Through operations like this, the FBI helps child victims escape the abusive life of sex trafficking."

Because of a national initiative, the FBI had a longer time window to implement their plan to save victims. The Houston Field Office worked with the Houston Police Department to search out social media and escort sites for juvenile victims being advertised for commercial sex. Officers set up a fake-date, met at a pre-arranged location, and brought victims in for an interview.
