Focus on Israel

1. Israel's 'Arbitrary' Airstrikes on Syria Must Stop, Russia Warns - HAARETZ

Russia said on Wednesday that Israel should stop carrying out what it called arbitrary air strikes on Syria days after the Israeli air force targeted Iranian forces there.

Israel, which regards Iran as its biggest threat, has repeatedly attacked Iranian targets in Syria and those of allied militia, including Lebanon's Hezbollah.

"The practice of arbitrary strikes on the territory of a sovereign state, in this case, we are talking about Syria, should be ruled out," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, in answer to a question from Russian news agency TASS about recent Israeli air strikes on Syria.

2. Netanyahu mocks top Iranian general: 'Look at the state of your bases in Syria'- Times of Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu derisively warned top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani Wednesday to examine "the state of Iranian bases he is trying to establish in Syria" instead of "interfering in the [Israeli] elections."

Netanyahu appeared to be responding to an unconfirmed report in a Kuwaiti paper according to which Soleimani, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards al-Quds Force, told Iranian leaders that strikes deep inside Israeli territory could bring down Netanyahu in the April 9 vote.

According to the report in al-Jarida, during a meeting with the Supreme National Security Council in Tehran Monday, Soleimani said that Netanyahu will likely only seek to escalate tensions along the Israeli-Syrian border in order to boost his popularity in the elections.

3. Putin and Erdogan agree to coordinate actions in Syria - Israel National News

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, met in Moscow on Wednesday and vowed to coordinate their actions more closely in Syria.

"Cooperation between Russia and Turkey is a touchstone for Syrian peace and stability," Erdogan said in translated comments at a joint press conference after their talks, which lasted around three hours, reported AFP.

"With our Russian friends we intend to strengthen our coordination even more," he added.

"We agreed how we'll coordinate our work in the near future," Putin said, calling the talks which included the countries' defense ministers "effective".

4. Iran reportedly behind latest escalation on Gaza border - Israel Hayom

Israeli tanks shelled Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, killing one Hamas terrorist after an IDF officer was shot and wounded by a Palestinian sniper near the border. Armed Palestinian factions in Gaza later convened "to discuss a proper response to the crimes of the Zionist occupier."

Later Tuesday, Israeli aircraft carried out multiple strikes on a Hamas military site in northern Gaza.

Reports that largely cited Hamas sources inside the coastal enclave, however, said the commander of Iran's Quds Force, Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, is behind the current efforts to escalate hostilities in Israel's south.

5. Netanyahu threatens Gaza, Iran after flareups on two fronts - Times of Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday threatened the Gaza Strip after an escalation of violence on the border, saying that Israel was ready for all possible scenarios.

"Maybe there is someone in Gaza who thinks they can raise their head, but I suggest they understand that the response will be serious and very painful. We are prepared for every scenario and every escalation," he told soldiers during a visit to the Shizafon army base in the south of the country.

Netanyahu, who also serves as defense minister, also threatened Iran and vowed to fight the country's forces in Syria.

The Daily Brief

1. BREAKING! Trump says he will give State of the Union after shutdown is over - Fox News

President Trump announced on Twitter late Wednesday that he will deliver a "great" State of the Union address after the partial government shutdown is over, ending a tense day in Washington where Republicans criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for blocking the president from giving the speech.

Pelosi told Trump that the House won't approve a resolution allowing him to come to Capitol Hill until the government reopens.

Trump said he is not going to look for an alternative venue due to the long tradition of the speech being delivered in the chamber of the House of Representatives.

White House officials told Fox News they were preparing for two tracks for next week's speech. The preferred track is an address at the Capitol. The second track is a backup plan for a speech outside of Washington, D.C.

"There is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber," he tweeted. "I look forward to giving a "great" State of the Union Address in the near future!" (Read more)

- Father, we continue to lift up the State of the Union address and pray this event will happen in the time and place of Your choosing.

- Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.
(Proverbs 16:3)

2. Trump nominates 51 judges at once, enough to fill one-third of all court vacancies - Washington Examiner

In a sweeping move to further influence federal courts with conservative picks, President Trump on Wednesday renominated 51 judges who saw no action in the last Congress. The list showed 37 nominees to district courts, nine to circuit courts, two each to the International Trade and Federal Claims courts, and one to the Military Commission Review.

One, Naomi Rao, was picked to replace the opening left when federal appeals court Judge Brett Kavanaugh won a seat on the Supreme Court.

The president is already on a historic pace to change the courts and fill vacancies with conservative picks. According to one tally, he has put 30 judges on the United States courts of appeals and 53 judges for the United States district courts. Should the Senate move quickly to approve his picks, as it has done so far, the 51 picks would fill one-third of the 146 vacancies. (Read more)

- Father, we pray these judicial nominees will receive quick confirmation in the new Senate.

- He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. (Proverbs 2:7-8)

3. Pompeo for Senate? Pressure mounts for secretary of state to join 2020 race in Kansas - Fox News

Pressure is mounting for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to throw his hat into the ring for the open Senate seat in Kansas in 2020 - at least in Washington, D.C. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is reportedly pursuing Pompeo to run for the seat which will be vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Pat Roberts.

Some Kansas Republicans have already touted Pompeo as an alternative to the controversial former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach who lost his bid for governor in the 2018 midterm elections. He has said he's seriously considering running for the Senate seat. Kobach led Trump's short-lived commission on election integrity and took a strict stance on immigration policies in his gubernatorial race. Multiple Kansas Republicans ultimately backed his Democratic opponent, Laura Kelly, who won the race. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt, former Gov. Jeff Colyer, Rep. Roger Marshall, former Rep. Kevin Yoder and Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the American Conservative Union, are among other possible contenders. (Read more)

- Father, we pray Secretary Pompeo will not leave his office until he has finished the good works You have given him to do. We pray for Your peace . . . Your shalom . . . to rest upon all who work now inside the Department of State, in Your name, amen.

- For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

4. Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives named to House Oversight Committee - Washington Examiner

Four progressive Democrats were named to the House Oversight Committee Tuesday night, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Ro Khanna of California.

Democrats have pledged to open several investigations into the Trump administration after taking back a majority in the House. Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said that he is excited about the addition of the progressive Democrats on the committee.

"If I based the choices going on the committee based on what people said or their reputations or whatever, I probably wouldn't have a committee," Cummings told Politico. "I am excited - there were a lot of people that wanted to come on our committee." (Read more)

- Father, we cancel the plans of these progressive members of the Democratic Party to overwhelm this committee and to take control of its agenda. Through the Blood of Jesus, we cancel all plans by this Committee to investigate any alleged illegal activities by the President of the United States. We thank You, O Lord, that as we ask for Your oversight to rule over this Oversight Committee, it shall be done, in Jesus' name, and through His Shed Blood, amen.

- "If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." (John 14:14)

5. Lawyer for Covington Catholic Families Gives Media 48 Hours to 'Retract and Correct' Smears - PJ Media

Robert Barnes, the lawyer representing the Covington Catholic High School kids who were smeared by the media, is warning reporters, celebrities, and others with large media platforms that they have until Friday to correct the record, or they will be sued.

On Fox and Friends Wednesday morning, Barnes, who is representing the families at no cost, explained that because the kids are private citizens and minors, anything someone says about them that is false can be libel, according to the law. Rather than proving malice, "all you have to prove is negligence," he said.

Barnes said he was representing the families in a possible class-action lawsuit pro bono because libel lawsuits are difficult for average citizens to bring as they are very expensive. "They cost between a quarter of a million and a million dollars in legal fees to bring," he explained. "So I wanted to equalize the playing field. These are people who couldn't afford to bring this claim on their own behalf. That's why I offered my services for free because somebody needed to stop this from reoccurring." (Read more)

- Father, we pray those who attacked the Covington teens will repent and seek forgiveness. If they refuse, we pray they will experience the full measure of civil and criminal penalties for their actions.

- Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. (Matthew 5:25)

6. 'A Sad and Evil Day': New York Legalizes Abortion Up to Baby's Birth Day on Anniversary of Roe v. Wade - CBN News

New York legislators cheered and applauded Tuesday night after the state Senate removed restrictions on late-term abortions, allowing unborn babies to be aborted on the day of birth. The Reproductive Health Act passed with a 38-28 vote and was signed into law by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

The law erases New York's previous limitations on abortion which restricted the fatal procedure past 24 weeks. The law also removes abortion from the definition of homicide and New York's criminal code altogether. Previously, New York law treated the murder of an unborn child in its third trimester as a felony offense punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Abortion will be regulated under public health law and a variety of medical professionals, not just licensed physicians, will be allowed to perform abortions without penalty. Pro-life activists are horrified by the legislation. (Read more)

- Lord Jesus, we lift up the state of New York and ask You, in Your mercy, to show them the error of their ways. We pray Your faithful servants who advocate for Life will be encouraged by Your Spirit and for You to bring about a great turnaround in public opinion. We repent that this has happened, in Your name, amen.

- Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes. (Romans 3:15-18)

7. Green Cards For DREAMERS? Report Says White House Is Prepared To Make Big Immigration Offer - DailyWire

Axios reports Wednesday that the White House is considering offering a "path to permanent residency" for the more than 700,000 "DREAMers," in return for extending funding on the border wall and an end to the partial government shutdown.

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner reportedly came up with the idea as a way to break the "congressional deadlock," but the idea appears to have been circling for some time among more moderate congressional Republicans looking to pass a comprehensive immigration reform package rather than simple funding for President Donald Trump's signature anti-illegal immigration method, the border wall.

The Trump administration has also offered to help revise the rules of the "Temporary Protected Status," giving more seasonal and guest workers the ability to avoid deportation while they hold down a job for a federally recognized employer. (Read more)

- Father, we ask You to give President Trump wisdom as he navigates the shutdown negotiations. We pray the final legislation will be good for all U.S. citizens as well as the people who wish to make our nation their home.

- And I charged your judges at that time, "Hear the disputes between your people and judge fairly, whether the case is between two Israelites or between an Israelite and a foreigner residing among you." (Deuteronomy 1:16)

8. Microsoft Teams with Establishment 'NewsGuard' to Create News Blacklist - Breitbart

Without consulting with its users, Microsoft has installed an establishment media browser extension, purportedly designed to rate the accuracy of news websites, as a default setting on mobile versions of its Edge browser. In practice, it creates a news blacklist by warning users away from sites including Breitbart News, The Drudge Report, and the Daily Mail.

The browser extension, called "Newsguard," presents users with a red warning label if they navigate to a website that it judges to be unreliable. A "green" rating is given to websites that NewsGuard considers trustworthy. A number of pro-Trump websites, including Breitbart News, are given a "red" rating by the extension.

Among the websites given a "green" rating [are] BuzzFeed, CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. Also "green" - Media Matters, the Clintonite Democrat website that regularly publishes hit-jobs against conservative media publications and personalities. Rolling Stone, is also given a "green" rating. Some left-wing sources are given "red" ratings by Newsguard. However, they tend to be on the anti-establishment side of Democratic politics: ShareBlue and the Daily Kos, for example, both have "red" ratings. (Read more)

- Father, we pray Microsoft will reprogram "Newsguard" and remove incorrect information about all news outlets.

- Scoundrels use wicked methods, they make up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just. (Isaiah 32:7)

9. Trump Recognizes Opposition Leader as Venezuela's Interim President - Free Beacon

The Trump administration ratcheted up pressure on Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro on Wednesday, announcing U.S. recognition of the country's opposition leader as interim president and signaling potential new sanctions against its vital oil sector.

The administration had been waiting to issue its announcement after Guaido had been sworn in as the country's temporary president on Wednesday, people familiar with the matter told Reuters. Guaido, a newcomer on the national scene who was elected to head Congress on Jan. 5, had said earlier he was willing to replace Maduro if he had the support of the military, with the aim of then calling for free elections.

With street protests against Maduro underway across Venezuela, Trump said the United States recognized Juan Guaido, head of the opposition-controlled Congress, as the country's leader and called socialist President Nicolas Maduro's government "illegitimate." (Read more)

- Father, we pray the longsuffering people of Venezuela will be delivered from Nicolas Maduro and his regime. Hear their prayers and bring them Your Peace.

- The Lord has heard my supplication, the Lord receives my prayer. (Psalm 6:9)

10. China Is Losing The Trade War In Nearly Every Way - Forbes

China is still the world's No. 2 economy and is still the monster of emerging markets, but regardless of those bonafides, Xi Jinping's country is losing the trade war in nearly every way imaginable. The Shanghai Composite is down around 30% in the last 12 months. Only Turkey is doing worse.

China is losing the PR battle. For years, U.S. companies have been complaining that China does not honor intellectual property rights. Washington believes tech powerhouses like Huawei owe much of their growth to IP theft.

Exports to the U.S. fell 3.7%, the first nonseasonal decline since October 2016. "The Chinese trade numbers released today got all the alarm bells ringing," says Naeem Aslam, chief market strategist for Think Markets in London and a Forbes contributor. "If you need any evidence how the trade spat is impacting a country's economic health then look no further than China trade. The lower export number means lower jobs, which means another direct impact on the (Chinese) economy. Donald Trump can be pleased. His policies have brought China to its knees." (Read more)

- Father, we lift up the nation of China and declare Your desire to receive her as Your inheritance. We pray specifically for President Xi to have a personal encounter with You, enlightening his heart and mind to the reality of Your holiness.

- Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. (Psalm 2:8)

Anatomy of deception

Discernment in perilous times is extremely important that we are able to heed the warning of Christ in Matthew 24:4, "Take heed that no man deceive you." Last week, there was a story that originated from Buzzfeed citing anonymous sources saying that President Donald Trump directed his personal lawyer to lie about his business dealings in Russia. In particular, the story said that Trump told Michael Cohen to say that he had no business dealings in Russia. All the while, the story says, Trump was working with Russian officials to reach agreement on putting a hotel in Moscow. In the immediate aftermath, the mainstream media and Democrats called for Trump's impeachment over 200 times.

Trouble is, the story is not true. The Daily Jot held back from reporting on this news because it didn't meet our criteria. First, the facts in the story didn't add up--it didn't appear that Trump instructed a lie. He had no business deal on a hotel in Moscow, although his business team was trying to reach one, according to the story. So where is the very basis for the story-the lie? Seasoned businessmen know that there is no deal until the deal is signed, raising a red flag in discerning this story. The headline said Trump instructed a lie; the story didn't support the claim. And just because someone is told to lie, the person is responsible for his own actions. Then there was a new twist. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Trump for Russian collusion in the 2016 election, rebuked the story.

Peter Carr, spokesman for Mueller's office, said. "BuzzFeed's description of specific statements to the Special Counsel's Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen's Congressional testimony are not accurate." Buzzfeed also was first to publish the infamous "pee" dossier on January 10, 2017 that started the Russian election investigations. That dossier was found to have been fabricated by a former British Intelligence officer working for Fusion GPS. Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee hired Fusion GPS to produce the now discredited dossier. That Buzzfeed broke the lie instruction and the pee dossier stories was another red flag.

The news media and the Democratic Party leadership went into full gear calling for more investigations of Trump and his impeachment following Buzzfeed's story. Then Mueller's office issued its statement. The news media had to pivot, but the impeachment calls and investigation threats remain. This is the anatomy of deception: Put the false story in the public, let the media cover it repeatedly, the story is found to be untrue, the damage is already done, move on to the next fake story. Neither Mueller nor the President nor anyone else can undo the damage already done. As a nation, as countrymen, we should be as David in Psalm 101:7, "He that works deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that tells lies shall not tarry in my sight." We need to banish the liars from our houses and from our sight that we are not deceived in the time ahead.

Have a blessed and powerful day,

IN THE SWEET BY AND BY

"In My Father's house there are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you." (John 14:2)

Lyrics

There's a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain

In the sweet by and by
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

Refrain

To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.

About the Author:

Words: Sanford F. Bennett, 1868.

Melody: Joseph P. Webster, 1869

About the Hymn:

Mr. Webster, like many musicians, was of an exceedingly nervous and sensitive nature, and subject to periods of depression, in which he looked upon the dark side of all things in life. I had learned his peculiarities so well that on meeting him I could tell at a glance if he was melancholy, and had found that I could rouse him up by giving him a new song to work on.

He came into my place of business [in Elkhorn, Wisconsin], walked down to the stove, and turned his back on me without speaking. I was at my desk. Turning to him, I said, "Webster, what is the matter now?" "It's no matter," he replied, "it will be all right by and by." The idea of the hymn came me like a flash of sunlight, and I replied, "The Sweet By and By! Why would not that make a good hymn?" "Maybe it would," he said indifferently.
Turning to my desk I penned the words of the hymn as fast as I could write. I handed the words to Webster. As he read his eyes kindled, and stepping to the desk he began writing the notes. Taking his violin, he played the melody and then jotted down the notes of the chorus. It was not over thirty minutes from the time I took my pen to write the words before two friends with Webster and myself were singing the hymn.

Signs and Wonders

A METEOROID HITS THE MOON DURING LUNAR ECLIPSE:

On Jan. 21st at 04:41:43 UT, a meteoroid slammed into the Moon. We know this because so many people witnessed the explosion. It happened during a total eclipse of the Moon, visible from five continents. Dr. Fritz Helmut Hemmerich photographed the eclipse from the Canary Islands of Spain and captured the fireball:

"This is a happy shot!" says Hemmerich. "The shot just before and the shot just a few seconds later show nothing. The fireball was short-lived and I'm glad I caught it in this 2-second exposure."

Dozens of reliable images and videos of the impact have surfaced in the days since the eclipse. Analyzing one sharp image taken by Christian Fröschlin of the Netherlands, geologist Justin Cowart has estimated the selenographic coordinates of the impact site: 29.47S, 67.77W +/- 4km. This puts it just to the west of the lunar crater Lagrange H. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter may be able to use such coordinates to target its cameras and photograph the crater.

Meteoroids hit the Moon all the time. Literally. NASA has been observing impact flashes since 2005. Recently, other groups in Europe have joined the hunt. Flashes are typically recorded once every 2 to 3 hours of observing time. Impactors range in size from softballs to boulders, liberating energies equal to tons of TNT when they strike

The rare thing about this strike is that it was photographed during a full Moon, when lunar glare usually overwhelms the glow of any fireball. During the eclipse, Earth's shadow turned lunar day into almost-night for an hour, allowing the fireball to be seen.

Readers, were you taking pictures of the eclipse around 04:41 UT? Check your photos. You might have captured an explosion. Submit images here. (Spaceweather.com) Read more.

The Good News Corner

His Father brought Him to the Middle East to Deepen His Islamic Roots,
But There He Met Christians "Raising Their Hands and Worshiping God,
Singing to Someone They Knew Was Real"

His father brought American-born Hazem Farraj back to Jerusalem to teach him the ways of Islam. But the then-12-year-old stunned his parents by adopting a different path, one that would lead to his family's rejection.

Farraj committed himself to his father's plan to rediscover his roots. But the more he prayed and practiced the rituals of Islam, the more his doubts grew.

"If you're praying to Allah, and you don't see any response from Allah, then you need to figure out who's listening or who's answering that prayer," he says on a Road to Jesus video. "That's what I had to do. Praying prayers to Heaven it was like Heaven was brass. They would fall back to me. I was searching."

But in his quest to know Allah, he grew frustrated and angry. "It made me mad because here we came as a family halfway around the globe from America to the Middle East," he says, "and the god I came to follow was not responding."

It only made him angrier to meet upstairs neighbors in his building that were Christian. Why did they have joy and peace while Farraj had nothing? He describes the one and a half years quest for truth as "an identity crisis."
