New U.S. Coin Marginalizes "In God We Trust"

Pushing Faith To The Fringe

The U.S. Mint is set to introduce a new dollar coin next year. But this time the national motto, “In God We Trust,” and “E Pluribus Unum” will not appear on either face, but will instead be printed on the thin edge of the coin.

Whether or not the mint meant it, the symbolism can’t be missed: Once again, government is pushing God and common bonds to the fringes, while most Americans would prefer that faith and patriotism be a central part of our lives. I predict the coin will flop.
