The Daily Brief Wednesday, December 17, 2008

"And the government shall rest upon His shoulder." (Isaiah 9:6)

The Daily Brief

1. Rep.Jackson Jr. Went to Authorities about Illinois Governor - CNN

Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who was cited in a criminal complaint against Rod Blagojevich, went to the U.S. Attorney's office about alleged wrongdoers, including the Illinois governor, a Jackson spokesman said Tuesday. Jackson rejected being labeled with the term "informant" in a message to CNN contributor Roland Martin. Spokesman Kenneth Edmonds described Jackson's interaction with federal authorities this way: "As a responsible citizen and elected official, Congressman Jackson has in the past provided information to federal authorities regarding his personal knowledge of perceived corruption and governmental misconduct."

· Praise the Lord that Rep. Jesse Jackson has the integrity to report corruption to the proper authorities. However, there is a smack of "getting even" in the whole story, for the Illinois governor did try to exact money for a political favor for Jackson's wife -- money that Jackson did not give. Pray that Jackson is led by the Lord to rise above all the political corruption in Illinois and be an honest and effective representative in the US Congress.

· "Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of Hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph." (Amos 5:15)

2. President Bush Considering 'All Options' on Auto Bailout - Fox News

Big 3 Idling to Save MoneyPresident Bush, in a wide-ranging interview with FOX News on Wednesday, said he's "looking at all options" for staving off a meltdown in the U.S. auto industry. After a $14 billion bailout bill failed in the Senate last week, the administration is considering several options. Aside from letting the automakers file for bankruptcy, the administration could tap funding from the $700 billion financial bailout bill. The urgency was underscored by word Wednesday from Chrysler, one of the Big Three, that it will shut down production for a month starting Friday. Ford and General Motors also have announced short-term plans to shut down many of their plants to save money.

· There is a tangled web in this scenario: big business, labor, and government -- all struggling to keep the economy afloat and to save the jobs of these American workers. Pray for wisdom for President Bush as he works, along with his advisors, to sort through this tangled web in order to make the correct decsion for the American people and for the auto industry.

· "Give the king knowledge of Your way of judging, O God . . ." (Psalm 72:1 AMP)

3. Catholic Files Suit to Stop Bailout of AIG - CR Daily Online

A Roman Catholic is challenging the government's bailout of American International Group, claiming it's illegal because AIG has financial products that promote Islam and are anti-Christian. The federal lawsuit was filed this week in Detroit on behalf of Kevin Murray, Jr. - an Iraq war veteran - by the Thomas More Law Center, which pursues cases on behalf of Christian causes. It says the government is unconstitutionally supporting religion with billions of dollars of aid for AIG, because the company offers financial services that comply with Islamic (Sharia) law.

· Praise the Lord that He has set a watchman over financial institutions such as AIG, who are pursuing Islamic countries' money for sheer greed. Pray that Murray wins his lawsuit and prevents the disbursement of taxpayers' money to a company that thinks so little of its allegiance to the USA. Pray for the CEO and other high officials of AIG so that they may find salvation in Jesus Christ. Pray for the removal of all Sharia compliant monies in the USA.

· "All the ways of man are clean in his own eyes, but the Lord weigheth the spirit." (Proverbs 16:2) "I will stand at my watch . . ." (Habakkuk 2:1)

4. Muslim Woman Arrested for Allegedly Refusing to Take Off Headscarf at Georgia Courthouse - FOXNews.com

A Muslim woman arrested for refusing to take off her head scarf at a courthouse security checkpoint said Wednesday that she felt her human and civil rights were violated. A judge ordered Lisa Valentine, 40, to serve 10 days in jail for contempt of court, said police in Douglasville, a city of about 20,000 people on Atlanta's west suburban outskirts. Valentine violated a court policy that prohibits people from wearing any headgear in court, police said after they arrested her Tuesday. She said she was unexpectedly released after the Washington-based Council on American- Islamic Relations urged federal authorities to investigate the incident as well as others in Georgia.

· Pray for this woman that she might be saved through Jesus Christ. She is not subject to the laws of Islam in the United States, and her reference to civil rights tends to be a red herring. She is using American freedoms to perpetuate Islam. She is a captive that Jesus came to set free.

· ". . . to preach deliverance to the captives. . . " (Luke 4:18)

5. Accelerant Poured Around Palin's Church - CR Daily Online

An accelerant was poured around the exterior of Gov. Sarah Palin's church before fire heavily damaged the building, Federal Investigators said Monday. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives said the accelerant was poured at several locations around the church, including entrances. The blaze was set last Friday night at the main entrance of the Wasilla Bible Church while a small group, including two children, were inside. No one was injured. Gov. Palin was not at the church at the time but visited Saturday morning. During her visit to the church, Palin told an assistant pastor she was sorry if the fire was connected to the "undeserved negative attention" the church as received since she became the vice presidential candidate for the Republican Party during the election.

· Praise the Lord that angels must have been watching, alerting those inside of the danger. Pray for the congregants so that no fear enters their hearts, especially the children. Pray that the finances are readily available to repair the church. Ask the Lord to reveal the arsonist so that justice may be served; and pray that he would come to repentance, leading to his salvation. Continue to pray for peace for Gov. Palin and her family.

· "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me." (Psalm 23:4)

6. Bush Honors Hanukkah, Israel's 60th Birthday - CR Daily Online

President George W. Bush has recognized Hanukkah six days early on Dec.16. At the White House ceremony with Jewish leaders, Bush also paid tribute to the state of Israel's 60th anniversary earlier this year. Hanukkah commemorates the ancient Jews' successful rebellion led by the Maccabee family against suppression of their religion under the Syrian- Greek empire. Bush compared the Maccabees' victory with the founding of modern Israel, which he called "another miraculous victory." After the lighting of the menorah, a Jewish choir performed a medley.

· Praise the Lord for President Bush's recognition of the statehood of Israel and of an important celebration of a miracle in Jewish history - God in action. Pray that the president never again mentions dividing Israel. Pray that the Bible becomes the literal Word of God for George W. Bush. Give glory and thanksgiving to the Lord for His miracles.

· "Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed Thy commandments." (Psalm 119:66)

The chief US delegate to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned Syria on Saturday that it had until March to begin showing signs of cooperation over its nuclear plan or the country would face punishment. Gregory L. Schulte presented Damascus with the ultimatum ahead of an IAEA meeting scheduled to take place in three months. Schulte told the London-based Arab daily Asharq Alawsat that "Syria must choose whether it plans to follow in Iran's footsteps or to cooperate." Schulte said that according to an American investigation, North Korea had not denied involvement in the construction of the alleged Syrian reactor that was reportedly destroyed by Israel in a September 2007 air strike. If Damascus chooses not to cooperate "there will be a negative reaction and serious questions will be raised," the US envoy cautioned.

· Give thanks to the Lord that the nations have finally taken a stand again Syria and her nuclear plans. Syria thinks that it can hoodwink everyone with her behaviors. Pray that any punishments will be applied with the Lord's wisdom. Syria has been a thorn in the side of Israel for 60 years and an ally with Russia and Iran, while trying to look honest to the West. The people of Syria suffer under corruption and careless leaders.

Pray for a final show of great wisdom from President Bush in these closing days of his administration. The race is not over yet, and he needs our prayers for increased strength. Pray for wisdom for the words of Secretary Rice.

1. Obama Rounds Out Environmental Team With Vilsack, Salazar - Fox News

Barack Obama rounded out his environmental team Wednesday, naming former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as his agriculture secretary and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar as his interior secretary. The president-elect said his nominees would serve as "guardians of the American landscape," and help invigorate the economy by fostering the creation of green jobs. Also on Tuesday, Obama tapped Chicago schools chief Arne Duncan to be his education secretary, calling Duncan a hands-on and unyielding advocate who would help craft a "new vision" for education in America. Duncan has been in charge of the country's third- largest school district for the past seven years, and has focused on improving struggling schools, closing those that fail and getting better teachers.

· As the president-elect continues to appoint his cabinet, lift up a prayer for each man or woman who is named. Pray that they will be forged quickly into an effective team, ready to carry out the plans of this new president after January 20th.

· "The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." (James 5:16)

3. Bush Prepares Crisis Contingency Briefings for Obama - Fox News

President George W. Bush's administration will brief president-elect Barack Obama and his team on more than a dozen contingency plans in case an international crisis breaks in the days after his inauguration, The New York Times reported Wednesday. The memorandums for the Obama administration cover several crisis scenarios including a North Korean nuclear explosion, a cyberattack on American computer systems, a terrorist strike on a U.S. facilities overseas, or an outbreak of instability in the Middle East, people briefed on them told the newspaper.

Each contingency planning goes beyond what other administrations have done and outlines options Obama can consider, they added."This is very unusual," Roger Cressey, a former Clinton White House counterterrorism official told the Times. "We certainly did not do that. When the transition happened from Clinton to Bush, remember it was a totally different world. You had some documents given that gave them a flavor of where things were at. But now you've got two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a hot war against Al Qaeda."

· Offer up a chorus of praise for this excellent working relationship between the outgoing administration and the one that will soon be in place. Clearly, President Bush still has the safety and the security of the American people foremost in his mind, even in this season of great transtion. Pray that, as his security team attempts to leave "no stone unturned" in helping the new president in his key role, they will be fully effective in doing so. Praise God!

· "Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord." (Psalm 150:6)

4. Illinois High Court Rejects Challenge to Remove Blagojevich - Fox News

Attorney General Lisa Madigan had argued Blagojevich's legal and political troubles are keeping him from performing his duties. She expressed disappointment over the court's decision. "Because of Gov. Blagojevich's refusal to resign, the state of Illinois is in an unsustainable situation," she said in a statement, adding that the charges against Blagojevich "strike directly at the heart of his decision - making process and seriously impede his ability to legitimately exercise the powers of his office." Madigan said she hopes the state General Assembly, which started impeachment proceedings against Blagojevich this week, moves fast.

· Pray that God's Kingdom government would prevail over the current power structure in the State of Illinois. Its citizens need help.

· "Let his days be few; and let another take his office." (Psalm 109:8)

5. Obama's inaugural choice sparks outrage - CNN

Chooses Evangelical pastor Rick Warren to Deliver Inauguration InvocationProminent liberal groups and gay rights proponents criticized President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday for choosing evangelical pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the presidential inauguration next month. Warren, one of the most influential religious leaders in the nation, has championed issues such as a reduction of global poverty, human rights abuses and the AIDS epidemic. But the founder of the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, has also adhered to socially conservative stances -- including his opposition to gay marriage and abortion rights that puts him at odds with many in the Democratic Party, especially the party's most liberal wing. · The president-elect certainly has been gifted with unusual political insight. Pray for Rick Warren as he prepares his remarks for the Inauguration. May his words be graced with the truth, the love, and the mercy of our Savior.

· " . . .pray without ceasing . . ." (I Thess. 5:18)

The Real Story Behind the Rushed Blagojevich Bust

How the Feds Are Frustrated by Losing (Maybe) Half of Their Case

Conventional wisdom holds that U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald ordered the FBI to arrest Rod Blagojevich before sunrise Tuesday in order to stop a crime from being committed. That would have been the sale of the Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

But the opposite is true: Members of Fitzgerald's team are livid the scheme didn't advance, at least for a little longer, according to some people close to Fitzgerald's office. Why? Because had the plot unfolded, they might have had an opportunity most feds can only dream of: A chance to catch the sale of a Senate seat on tape, including the sellers and the buyers.

On December 4, according to the feds, here's what they heard: Blagojevich told an adviser he was giving "greater consideration" to one pick for the Senate seat, named "Senate Candidate 5″ by the feds, because of that politician's willingness to raise money. That man has since been identified as U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., the Chicago Democrat affectionately known in his hometown as Triple J. Jackson has denied any involvement in such schemes and says he never authorized anyone to deal in such a manner on his behalf. He also said Fitzgerald's office informed him that he's not a target in the investigation.

The next morning, on Friday, Dec. 5, it all came crashing down for the FBI agents underneath the headphones. There appear to have been fears in Fitzgerald's office that those caught on tape might now seek to "undo" other "things." Hours were logged over the weekend. Paperwork was pounded out. And before sunrise Tuesday, Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested simultaneously. At that same moment, FBI agents also knocked on the doors of witnesses. These were just a few of the people agents wanted to interview before cell phones started ringing across the city and others who had been caught on tape had a chance to get their stories straight. . . · Pray that the honest details of this situation will be revealed to authorities and to the public. While Illinois politics has had a reputation of corruption for several decades, obviously this is not the only state that is tainted with corruption. Pray that the Lord continues to clean up American society, for many citizens are apathetic about politics and fail to examine each candidate for office. Pray for the souls of those involved, so they will meet Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

· "For I [the Lord] know your manifest transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate at their right." (Amos 5:12)

The Daily Brief Tuesday, December 16, 2008

"And the government shall rest upon His shoulder." (Isaiah 9:6)

The Daily Brief

1. President Bush Visits Iraq - The Wall Street Journal

"The War Is Not Over, But It Is Decisively On Its Way To Being Won"

"President George W. Bush made a surprise trip to Baghdad this weekend to highlight a new security agreement intended to form the basis for a long-term alliance with Iraq. Mr. Bush, on his fourth and almost certainly final visit to the country, met Sunday with Iraqi leaders and praised efforts to establish a democratic government there In a meeting with President Jalal Talabani. Mr. Bush said he had come to Iraq to tout the passage of the security agreement. The security agreement, covering military relations and broader cooperation, replaces a series of United Nations Security Council resolutions as the legal basis for foreign troops' presence in Iraq.

· Lord, we thank You for answered prayer. As a now stronger nation in defending itself, we pray that Iraq will remember the sacrifices of our troops and continue to be allies with us in the war against terrorism. Bless Iraq with salvation in Jesus Christ.

· "You pushed me violently, that I might fall, but the Lord helped me. . . .The voice of rejoicing and salvation Is in the tents of the righteous; the right hand of the Lord does valiantly. (Psalm 118:13, 15)

2. President Bush Visits Afghanistan - Agence France-Presse

"The United States Has Stood With" The People Of Afghanistan "And Will Stand With Them" US President George W. Bush landed in Afghanistan early Monday on a surprise visit to meet President Hamid Karzai and dispel any fears of flagging support when he leaves office. "I want to be in Afghanistan to say 'thank you' to President Karzai, to let the people of Afghanistan know that the United States has stood with them and will stand with them," Bush said en route here.

"These nations need to know that the United States has been with them, is with them, and will be with them," said Bush. Bush said Washington was working with Pakistan to halt cross-border strikes in Afghanistan, and praised Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, the widower of slain former premier Benazir Bhutto, as "determined to help", "He's said so publicly and he's said so to me privately. He looked me in the eye and said 'you don't need to talk to me about extremist violence, after all my wife got killed by extremists,''' said Bush.

· Continue to pray for the protection of our troops and those of all allied countries that are now positioned inside Afghanistan to ensure the peace and the stability of this nation. Repent for the manufacture and sale of opium that continues to flourish in that nation under the new regime, and ask our Lord to cancel any curse that would prosper against those people -- or our own troops -- as a result of this trafficking. Pray that the current president of Afghanistan will be strengthened in his desire to rule against lawlessness and for peace

· Love covers a multitude of sins. (I Peter 4:8)

3. It's official: Barack Obama Elected 44th President - AP

Presidential electors have formally elected Barack Obama the nation's 44th president. More than 131 million voters cast ballots - the most ever in a presidential election. But Obama's election will not be complete until Congress tallies the outcome of Monday's Electoral College vote at a joint session scheduled for Jan. 6.

· Thank You, Lord, that we live in a nation that peacefully transfers our government to new officials. We pray for President-elect Obama to have Your wisdom, restraint, and discernment to not instigate laws that violate your laws, Lord! We request that any questions about the President-elect citizenship will be revealed and resolved before the Jan.6.counting of the electoral college votes.

· Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. (1 Timothy 2:1, 2)

4. Government Financial Report Shows 'Fiscal Cancer,' Deficit Tops $1 Trillion With New Method - Fox News

The federal deficit for 2008 would top $1 trillion if the government had to use the same accounting methods as private companies. The government is promising $49 trillion more than it can deliver on Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid over the next 75 years unless Congress steps in to shore up the system. Some combination of tax increases, benefit cuts or other policy changes is needed to stave off unsustainable deficits.

· Lord, we pray that as officials chosen by President-elect Obama try to devise strategies to bring our economy back into balance, they will not consider any ideas that would further harm our weakened economy. Give them frugality and Your divine wisdom to correct the problems.

· For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. (Colossians 1 :9)

5. U.S. Troops' New Mission: America's 'Special Events' - WND

New rules published in the Federal Register would allow certain civilians to call American soldiers into action inside the U.S. to prevent environmental damage or respond to "special events" and "other domestic activities." Under the U.S. Constitution, soldiers inside the country essentially are tasked with the responsibility of quelling "insurrections" and repelling invasions as well as making sure each state has access to the republican form of government. But the new rules go far beyond that, essentially establishing a plan to activate the U.S. military inside the country to deal with social issues under provisions that appear to be devoid of any connection to the Constitution, according to an expert, Herb Titus, founding dean of the College of Law and Government at Regent University.

"Instead of prosecuting somebody charged with murder, we should profile people who are likely to commit murder, round them up and prevent them from endangering lives," he said, citing the plan's apparent permission for the government to restrain liberties when there is concern about potential damages or injury.

· Father God, we pray that You will not allow those plans of profiling people to be enacted. Our own government should not be used to persecute anyone - especially those of Christian faith. We pray for an immediate end to these plans.

· When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan. (Proverbs 29:2)

6. Detroit Automakers Await Deal on Auto Loans - AP

The administration, following the legislative defeat, said it was considering several options, including using money from the $700 billion financial bailout fund to provide loans to the car makers. Bush reiterated Monday that tapping the financial bailout fund remains an option. It also could do nothing, leaving open the possibility that one or more of the automakers could go bankrupt. The White House has warned a collapse of the auto industry would severely hurt the economy.

· We pray that in the new year, we will have a new beginning in our economy, in a return to the standards established in the Constitution, and especially in our lives so that we may be Your people demonstrating the fruits of the Spirit - especially of goodness and self-control.

· But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22, 23)

7. Icy Weather Rips Through U.S. - AP

A series of winter blasts whipped across the country Monday, slamming California with storms, chilling New Mexico, Texas and setting sub-zero records in the upper Midwest. Frigid temperatures stunned even the heartiest in the upper Midwest. Rapid City, S.D., broke a 107-year-old record of minus 19; Cheyenne, Wyo., set its own record at minus 13.

· Lord, You are lord over all creation and it all obeys You. We come to You for respite from all these storms that are hitting our nation. You said that You would be our refuge in times of trouble. And so we run to You for Your mercies.

· The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works . . . The Lord is near to all who call upon Him; He also will hear their cry and save them (Psalm 145:9,19)

The $15 billion bailout loan for Detroit automakers that the House passed Wednesday is still far from a done deal as a collection of Senate Republicans is raising roadblocks to the taxpayer-funded handout brokered by Democrats and the White House.

- As rhetoric begins to heat up, we pray for cooler heads to prevail and for all parties to sit down and act in the interests of the people of this nation.

- For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain. (Titus 1:7)

- One who is greedy stirs up strife; but one who trusts in Yahweh will prosper. (Proverbs 28:25)

7. Greek violence spreads across Europe - Times Online

Suspected anarchist protests which have dogged Greece for the last week spread outside the country today, with mobs causing violent scenes in Italy, Spain, Russia, Denmark and Turkey. Greek diplomatic missions were vandalized in the attacks, while police, local authority and media representatives were also targeted in what appeared a co-coordinated escalation.

- This is a continued outpouring of violence by those who are undermining governments throughout the world. May the police in Europe be able to control these protests and may the police in America be able to ward off similar attacks here.

B. Bill Lists Environmental Goals Above Boosting U.S. Auto Sales - CNSNews.com

The draft legislation that would enshrine in federal law the agreement that President Bush and the Democratic Congress have made to bailout U.S. automakers lists the environmental purposes of the bill above the purpose of increasing sales of American-made automobiles.

· Lord, in all of the legislation that is brought before Congress, the news media only reports the headlines and fails to tell us the hidden agendas. We ask that You defeat bills which carry underlying plans that would harm America in the long run. And we ask that these secrets be revealed to the wider range of the people.

· "Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell." (Proverbs 9:17,18)

· Father, while You have called us to love our fellow men and women, You have also called us to righteousness. We have fallen away from that truth, Lord, and are actively promoting lifestyles that are repugnant to You, so we pray for mercy. We ask that you help us to stand firm in Your truth, while we lovingly extend salvation to those who desperately need to know You.

· "Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God." (2 Cor 5:20)

3. Senate Finance Chairman- Congress Must Spend Money to Show it Cares - CNSNews.com

Sen. · It's also true that you have actually have money to be fiscally sound. Pray for God to literally deliver sound, Godly wisdom to our leaders. May they find the financial principles of the Bible as their guide to correct the current economic problems.

California Set to Adopt Sweeping Global Warming Plan - APOn Thursday, the California Air Resources Board was expected to adopt what would be the nation's most sweeping global warming plan, outlining for the first time how individuals and businesses would meet a landmark 2006 law that made the state a leader on global climate change.

· Lord, California is but a microcosm of the rest of the nation's inability to walk in wisdom. They have supported the gay community, pushed the global warming agenda, treated our troops poorly in areas, tried to legislate home schools out of the picture, and tried to control their people on nearly every front. All of that is seriously expensive, not just financially, but spiritually as well. Lord, instead of bailout for CA, let there be an awakening of truth and a move of Your Holy Spirit to right the upside down thinking of its leaders.

· "Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance." (Proverbs 29:3)

The White House in Transition

1. Report: Obama to Offer Israel "Nuclear Umbrella" Against Attack - Ha'aretz

President-elect Barack Obama will offer Israel a strategic pact designed to fend off any nuclear attack on the Jewish state by Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday.

· Father, if this report is true, we rejoice that Mr. Obama has realized the importance of Israel. We pray Your blessing over such a pact that it be properly worded and administered.

· "And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee . . ." Genesis 12:3

2. Bork: Obama Will Move Courts Sharply to the Left - Newsmax.com

Former Supreme Court Justice nominee Robert Bork predicts that President-elect Barack Obama's judicial nominees will orchestrate a profound sea change in U.S. jurisprudence, legalizing same-sex marriage, restricting or eliminating the death penalty, and tying the hands of the military so severely that "commanders in the field will have to be gathering evidence while they're fighting."

· Lord we pray that none of these bleak scenarios will come to pass. We ask that You bring the fear of the Lord into our legal system, and grant the Supreme Court the wisdom to judge in righteousness no matter who is appointed.

· "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride, and arrogance, and the evil way do I hate. Counsel is Mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength." (Proverbs 8:13,14)

3. Indian Appointments to the Transition Team - Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL)

President-Elect Barack Obama has appointed six Native Americans to his transition team. One of them, Keith Harper (Cherokee), was an attorney who represented Elouise Cobell in her lawsuit against the federal government. In her suit, Cobell (Blackfeet) accused the government of mismanaging $176 billion in Indian trust assets. The other Native Americans on Obama's transition team are Yvette Roubideau (Rosebud Sioux), John Echohawk (Pawnee), Robert Anderson (Chippewa), Mary C. Smith (Cherokee), and Mary McNeil (Winnebago). These Native appointments are auspicious for Indian Country. If they translate into real Indian leadership, they could lead to greater attention for issues like Indian health, tribal justice, and land rights.

· Pray that the president-elect continues to be guided by the wisdom of Almighty God as he builds a new administration. Offer praise for this positive report among native peoples from those who are "in the know" about the needs of this very special group of people in the land.

· "If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." (John 14:14) 4.

Economic Stimulus for Native Americans

Indians, like all underserved Americans, are being hit the hardest in these tough financial times. Native American advocates are working to ensure that Obama's promised economic stimulus package addresses their community's needs. Meanwhile, several senators are seeking to increase the financial resources for Indian Country in the budget for fiscal year 2010. Obama's budget proposal is due to Congress the first week of February. Sens. John Thune (SD), Jon Kyl (AZ), Jon Tester (MT), Lisa Murkowski (AK), Pete Domenici (NM), Tim Johnson (SD), and Indian Affairs Committee Chairman Byron Dorgan (ND) signed a letter to President George W. · "And seek the peace of the city . . . and pray unto the Lord for it; for in the peace thereof, ye shall have peace." (Jeremiah 29:7)

The Daily Brief Wednesday, December 10, 2008

"Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon." (Isaiah 55:7)

The Daily Brief

1. White House, Congress near deal on auto bailout
- AP

A government "car czar" with the power to force U.S. automakers into bankruptcy would dole out $15 billion in emergency loans to the failing industry under an emerging deal between the White House and congressional Democrats, but bill could still face obstacles from congressional Republicans.

· Pray for the Lord's wisdom to dominate these plans of men. Only the Lord knows whether this bailout should take place and if so, under what regulations and conditions. Is there too much government control proposed? Pray for the Lord's will and also for the souls of the CEO's of the automotive industry.

· "Whom shall He teach knowledge and whom will He make to understand doctrine?" (Isaiah 28:9a)

2. BREAKING: House Approves Auto Bill - Fox News

House approves $14B rescue package by vote of 237 - 170, but bill still faces opposition from Senate Republicans.

· Continue in prayer over this very vital matter. May Congress and the White House find the correct balance between another "bailout" of an endangered inustry; and a loan that, in time, must be repaid.

· "Pray without ceasing." (I Thess. 5:17)

3. D.C. 'nightmare' looms for inauguration - Washington Times

Area business and government leaders warned Monday that the District is not prepared to handle the record crowds expected to converge on the capital for Barack Obama's presidential inauguration. At a briefing organized by the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the leaders expressed concern that the District will be overwhelmed by the influx and that visitors will find shortfalls in everything from milk and bread to parking for an estimated 10,000 buses. Even cell phone reception could be hampered by a lack of transmission towers. Between 4 million and 5 million visitors are expected during the four-day inaugural celebration next month. That number represents about 20 percent of the 20 million visitors who came to Washington during all of last year, said Board of Trade President Jim Dinegar. As a result, Mr. Dinegar said, the inauguration will be "a logistical nightmare."

· Our nation's capital needs significant prayer to handle such an influx. Because many will become impatient with the clogged city, the worst could happen. All hotel accommodations are already reserved. Bind any spirits of lawlessness.

· "And seek the peace of the city . . . and pray unto the Lord for it; for in the peace thereof, ye shall have peace." (Jeremiah 29:7)

4. Abortion Foes Open a New Front - Wall Street Journal

Abortion opponents are pressing state and local govenrnents to stop sending taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood, arguing that the nonprofit group has plenty of cash and shouldn't be granted scarce public funds at a time of economic crisis.

· Give thanks unto the Lord for His revealing a new strategy to eliminate abortion in America. Pray that many will join this strategy, calling for the complete end to funds for Planned Parenthood, a major abortion force in this nation.

· "I cried unto the Lord with my voice; with my voice unto the Lord did I make my supplication. I poured my complaint Him; I showed before Him my trouble." (Psalm 142:1,2)

5. Virtual World for Muslims Debuts - BBC

The first virtual world catering to practicing Muslims has made a trial launch in cyberspace, thanks to Muxlim, a English-language, Finland-based Web site devoted to Muslims living in the West. "We are not a religious site - we are a site that is focused on the lifestyle," site founder Mohamed El- Fatatry tells the BBC. "This is for anyone who is remotely interested in the Muslim culture and the Muslim lifestyle." The virtual world, called Muxlim Pal, isn't as high-tech as "Second Life." Its three-quarter viewing angle and blocky cartoonish figures make it look like an older version of the "Sims" series.

· Ask the Lord to keep watchmen attentive to this website so that we can follow what is being taught to Moslem children and others who look at the website. If any of you have seen the DVD entitled "Obsession," you know what horrific ideas are taught to children in the name of their god. Pray that the hearts of children will be fire-proofed against any wickedness.

· "But Jesus said,' Suffer little children and, forbid them not, to come unto Me for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.'" (Matthew 19:14)

6. Video: Hovering 'Multiple Kill Vehicle," Straight Outta Star Wars - Trunews.com

The Pentagon is investing big in an interceptor that can take out any countermeasures. But for this "Multiple Kill Vehicle" to work right, it has to be able to radically maneuver and reposition itself in mid- air. Earlier this months, a prototype payload was tested at Edwards Air Force Base in California. And the result, as Ares notes, was something that looked like the target droid that "zapped a blindfolded Luke Skywalker during lightsaber training." "The MKV isn't designed to 'knock down several missiles at once,'" Rick Lehner, with the Missile Defense Agency, notes in the comments. "It is being designed as a way to intercept and destroy all objects from a single ballistic missile -- warhead, countermeasures, booster debris, etc."

· Petition the Lord to find His will for this project. Does the USA really need such a device? Russia certainly seems to be intimidated by these American plans. Of course, only true revival in the USA and repentance by millions of citizens who deny their need for God and think that their actions have caused the blessings that we enjoy will bring the Lord's umbrella of protection over this nation.

· "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide in the shadow of the Almighty." (Psalm 91:1)

7. President Bush Says "It Is Time For Robert Mugabe To Go" - United Press International

Pledges To Help Rebuild ZimbabweU.S. President George Bush says it is time for Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe 'to go,' joining an international chorus of criticism. "As my administration has made clear, it is time for Robert Mugabe to go," Bush said. . . 'We urge others from the region to step up and join the growing chorus of voices calling for an end to Mugabe's tyranny." Bush said the United States "stands ready to help rebuild Zimbabwe" once a government is established that includes members of the Movement for Democratic Change opposition party."

· Pray for the citizens of Zimbabwe that they may be freed of the oppressor Mugabe. This man is a dictator in his homeland and a squanderer of his nation's resources and people. Pray that the people find hope in President Bush's declaration and in the criticism of other nations.

· "Deliver me [Zimbabweans], O Lord, from the evil man; preserve me from the violent man." (Psalm140:1)

8. Jet Crash Widower Begs for Help Coping - AP

Overwhelmed with anguish, Dong Yun Yoon walked unsteadily to a pile of rubble where his home once stood and pleaded for advice on how to cope after losing his family. His wife, two children and mother-in-law were killed when a fighter jet lost power and crashed through their home and burst into flames. A day after the tragedy, Yoon held a news conference to ask guidance from people who have suffered "more terrible things." . . . "Please tell me how to do it," he said Tuesday, surrounded by his pastor, sister and brother. "I don't know what to do."

Yoon, sobbing into a tissue at the foot of his destroyed house, also asked for prayer for the jet's Marine pilot, who ejected safely from the F/A-18D Hornet after his training mission went awry Monday."I don't have any hard feelings," Yoon, 37, told reporters. "I know he did everything he could."

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, called on the Marine Corps on Tuesday to release the maintenance records of all its F/A-18D Hornet fighters.

· Take a minute tonight, pause, and lift up a prayer for this precious man who has just lost everyone -- so suddenly -- that he held dear in his life. May the people of the world be moved not only by his plight, but also by his tremendous witness, as Mr. Yoon forgave the pilot who caused this, and asked that everyone pray for this man, too.· Pray, too, for "all in authority" in this case, including the members of the House Armed Services Committee, as they seek to learn the exact cause of this disaster -- so it never will be repeated again. Pray.

· "Comfort ye, comfort ye, My people," saith your God." (Isaiah 40:1)

1. Israel Worried By Report Iran Has Tripled Its Missile Arsenal - Haaretz

Reports on Monday suggesting Iran has recently tripled its missile arsenal have exacerbated concerns that the Islamic Republic remains tireless in its efforts to step up defensive capabilities against Israel. The number of Shihab-3 missiles in Iran's possession has gone from roughly 30 at the start of 2008 to more than 100. The long-range Shihab-3 missiles are capable of striking any point in Israel. At this point, they are armed with one-ton conventional warheads but are also capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

· If we ever needed to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and the whole nation of Israel, it is now. Pray for the Lord's protection of Israel's borders. The Lord can dispatch mighty angels who can send those missiles back to their place of origin. Iran does not know what curses it is bringing on itself with these plans to eradicate Israel. But He does love the Iranian people and wants them to be saved in His Son Jesus Christ.

1. Just $15B left of first $350B of government bailout - USA Today

The government has $15 billion left to spend from the first $350 billion of financial bailout money, the Treasury Department said Monday. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who is overseeing the program, is weighing tapping the second $350 billion. The main goal of the program is aimed at getting financial institutions to lend money more freely again, which would help revive the economy.

· Lord, we have elected officials who have forgotten that they are to represent us and that the budget of our government has to be like our own at home. We cannot overspend. We pray that You will give them Your wisdom and restraint.

· Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls. (Proverbs 25:28)

2. Accused 9/11 plotters say they want to confess - AP

The war-crimes detainees said they decided on Nov. 4 - the day Obama was elected - to abandon their defenses against the capital charges. Obama opposes the military trials and has pledged to close Guantanamo's detention center, which holds some 250 men.

· Lord, we pray for the salvation of these terrorists who have great designs to attack not only our nation but others; we pray for justice for the families of those who have been killed. Give us wisdom on how to punish these terrorists.

· The great God who formed everything Gives the fool his hire and the transgressor his wages. Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. (Proverbs 26:10, 12)

3. Bush Says Creation 'Not Incompatible' With Evolution - Fox News

President George W. Bush said his belief that God created the world is not incompatible with the scientific theory of evolution. Asked about creation and evolution, Bush said: "I think you can have both. I think evolution can -- you're getting me way out of my lane here. I'm just a simple president. But it's, I think that God created the earth, created the world; I think the creation of the world is so mysterious it requires something as large as an almighty and I don't think it's incompatible with the scientific proof that there is evolution."He added, "I happen to believe that evolution doesn't fully explain the mystery of life."

· Lord, many good people like President Bush have confusion over the inerrancy of the Bible. It is true - every word of it. You are able to guard over it so we have confidence to believe it is all true. Help these people to learn that.

· "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to His words, or He will rebuke you and prove you a liar. (Proverbs 30:5, 6)

4. Study: Americans pray just to get through the day - Washington Times

Ninety percent have a spiritual interlude with God every day, according to a study released Thursday by Brandeis University. Half pray several times a day, in fact. "Most prayer writers imagine a God who is accessible, listening, and a source of emotional and psychological support, who at least sometimes answers back," said Wendy Cadge, a sociologist who directed the research. The experience is intensely personal, with eight out of 10 beginning their prayers with a familiar greeting, like "Dear Lord" or "Hello Jesus."

· Let our hearts and minds never forget, Lord, that it is You who have made us and not we ourselves! All creation worships You. We pray that we shall also worship You with all our hearts, minds, and our strength.

· "Beware that you do not forget the Lord your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, lest - when you have eaten and are full . . . then you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gained me this wealth.' (Deuteronomy 8:11, 17) NIV

5. Poll: Netanyahu most likely to advance peace

War and Peace Index shows 31% of Kadima voters believe Netanyahu can promote peace while safeguarding Israel's interests. The index further showed a solid majority among the Jewish public of 58% (vs. 36%) who support the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, and a slightly larger majority (61% vs. 35%) who see the Palestinians' claim to an independent state of their own as justified. Most of the Jewish public is prepared to accept the idea of an independent Palestinian state while, at the same time, assuming that the Palestinians' intentions toward Israel are not to accept its existence but rather to destroy it.

· Lord, there seems to be confusion in the minds of Israelis about creating an independent Palestinian state. We pray that You will reveal to them and other nations Your desire for Israel and Your plan for their future.

· For all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. (Genesis 13: 15) It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zechariah 12: 3, 9)

6. Illinois Governor Arrested for Trying to Sell Barack Obama's Vacant Senate Seat - AP

Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the renowned federal prosecutor who won the conviction of both Daily Telegraph chairman Conrad Black and the US vice-president's chief of staff Lewis "Scooter" Libby, said in a statement that "the breadth of corruption laid out in these charges is staggering." They allege that Blagojevich put a 'for sale' sign on the naming of a United States senator, involved himself personally in pay-to-play schemes with the urgency of a salesman meeting his annual sales target; and corruptly used his office in an effort to trample editorial voices of criticism," Mr. Fitzgerald said. The prosecutor alleged that Blagojevich is heard on tape demanding a corporate board seat for his wife worth as much as $150,000 a year; promises of campaign funds, including cash up front; and the post of secretary of health and human services or an ambassadorship for himself in the Obama administration.

· Lord, we thank You for revealing the hidden things that corrupt officials are doing in our government. We pray that You will continue to remove those who are doing harm to our nation! We pray for officials that will uphold righteous laws!

· "Also today the Lord has proclaimed you to be His special people, just as He promised you, that you should keep all His commandments, and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken." (Deuteronomy 26:18, 19)

7. Democrats Hopeful of Auto Bailout Deal - Fox News

Weary Democratic congressional leaders pushed to clear the final obstacles to a $15 billion bailout of U.S. automakers Tuesday night, but the rescue plan faced new snags as Republicans raised deep concerns.

Top Democrats said they were still hopeful of a deal by the end of the night -- with a vote to follow by the end of the week -- though significant sticking points remained. Still unresolved were the precise requirements to be placed on carmakers by a new "car czar" who would be named by President George W. Bush and could ultimately force the carmakers to reinvent themselves. Republicans also were demanding -- so far unsuccessfully -- that Democrats scrap language that would force the carmakers to drop lawsuits challenging tough emissions limits in California and other states. Still, leading Democrats voiced optimism that a deal would emerge.

· As Congress prepares to enter into another marathon, late-night session tonight, intercede for each member -- and for your own congressman, in particular -- that in the heat of the battle and the weariness of the hour, mistakes will not be made that would be difficult to correct later on. Pray for wisdom as the 110th Congress meets to consider yet one more bailout at the end of this difficult economic year. Pray for "wisdom from above" to prevail in this very serious debate.

· "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5)

Pennies add up to abortion message

Pennies add up to abortion messageChurch fills glass house with symbolic protest

There's a half million dollars sitting on the corner of Mississippi and President streets in Jackson, but no one could possibly steal it.The Memorial to the Missing outside the Mississippi Baptist Convention building in downtown Jackson, Miss., is filled with pennies representing the approximately 50 million abortions performed in the U.S. since 1973.

That's because the cash is in the form of pennies -- 50 million of them -- that collectively weigh 156 tons. The coins, which fill a glass house outside of the Mississippi Baptist Convention building, provide a visual reminder of the number of abortions performed in the United States since the Roe vs. Wade decision in 1973.

"We just needed something to memorialize and help people see the magnitude of abortion over the last several decades," said Rev. Jimmy Porter, executive director of the Mississippi Baptist Convention's Christian Action Commission.Called the "Memorial to the Missing," the penny-filled structure is a project of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, which set out more than two years ago to collect one penny for each child who would have been born were it not for legal abortion.

The plaque says the coins not only represent aborted babies but "the difficult process of decision-making, fear and loneliness" involved with abortion. It asks passersby to "stop, pray, consider what we are doing as a nation, ask God to forgive us, seek ways to help those who are struggling with the decision and look to the Lord to restore each of us."

The coins are piled 6 feet deep in the 13-by-7 glass house. The structure weighs more than 300,000 pounds, or the equivalent of 100 sedans stacked on top of each other. Now that the convention reached its goal of collecting 50 million pennies, it plans to invest the money in a fund dedicated to anti-abortion causes. Anh Cao: A New Member from Louisiana

House Now a Home for Louisiana's Anh Cao

A Vietnamese refugee at the tender age of eight, Louisiana's Anh Cao remembers a letter he received from his father, who spent more than a decade in prison after the fall of Saigon. "Give back to the community," it read. After an improbable victory over House incumbent William Jefferson (D), Cao is poised to do just that. Our sister organization, FRC Action, endorsed the long-shot candidate, who unseated Jefferson with 50% of the district's vote to his 47%, putting a Republican in the Second District seat for the first time since 1890. "I think people just ran out of gas a bit," the Democrat said in his concession speech.

More likely, voters ran out of patience with their ethically-challenged leader. Until now, Jefferson had been all but untouchable in New Orleans, despite allegations of money laundering, corruption, and racketeering. Even the $90,000 in bribes that authorities allegedly found in his freezer in 2005 did little to dent Jefferson's political invincibility. It took an outspoken pro-lifer, a compelling story, and a thirst for real leadership to finally oust a man whose scandals were an embarrassment to the U.S. House. In Cao, the city finally has a chance to move forward. When asked about his priorities, Cao said, "The only thing I am certain of is that I am anti-abortion."

We applaud his courageous campaign and look forward to working with him in defense of life. Social conservatives, now deep in the minority, will need all the help they can get from giant-slayers like Cao if they hope to challenge the House's liberal Goliaths. (Family Research Council)

MT Judge: Assisted Suicide a Legal Right

Treasure State Judge Ignores Life's True Riches

If Friday's ruling is not overturned, Montana could become the third U.S. state to legalize assisted suicide -- and the first to sanction it from the bench instead of the voting booth. Last week, state district Judge Dorothy McCarter issued her opinion in the case of Robert Baxler, who, according to Billings' KULR, died late Friday of incurable cancer. Using "human dignity" as justification, Judge McCarter created a "right" to euthanasia citing the state's privacy laws. In oral arguments, McCarter was unsympathetic from the start, equating euthanasia with putting down pets. "[Y]et, if we want to do it to our loved ones, it's considered murder," she said. For now, the ruling will allow "mentally competent" patients to take their lives through lethal prescriptions. State Attorney General Mike McGrath has indicated that his office will appeal.

If McCarter's opinion stands, Montana would be the only state to legalize euthanasia through the courts. In both Oregon (1997) and Washington (2008), voters approved their assisted suicide laws directly through ballot initiatives. According to the Oregon Department of Health, 341 patients have taken their own lives under the state's law. One hundred twenty-two of those deaths were funded by taxpayers through Medicare or Medicaid. Twenty experienced complications from the drugs.

Proponents of assisted suicide laws say the government should have no authority to interfere in patients' lives. Sound familiar? Here the authority at issue is really a temptation: will cash-strapped governments turn more and more to euthanasia and limits on life-saving care to protect the bottom line? Montana may not wish to open such a Pandora's Box and unleash the evils of a culture of death. (Family Research Council)

Water Crisis in Israel

Leaders Meet to Discuss the Regional Water Crisis

Delegates from Israel, Jordan, and the so-called Palestinian communities will meet this week to consider the severity of the current water crisis. The Friends of the Middle East will convene their fifth annual conference and mayors from the three regions will attend. Nader Khateeb, a Director of Friends of the Middle East said Israel is reducing agricultural water quotas and in the village of Auja, the entire agricultural sector has come to a complete halt due to the drying of the Auja Stream. Nader said these restrictions have also dried up local resources for income.

Gidon Bromberg, Israeli Director of Friends of the Middle East, said "while the national leadership seeks supply-side solutions such as desalination of sea water and various canals, the local leadership which experiences the impact directly, is focused on demand-side management, conservation and wise water use."

The conference held in the framework of Good Water Neighbors has the participation of the Ambassador of the EU delegation to the state of Israel, the Director of the US Agency for International Developments, numerous mayors, diplomats, community leaders and residents. The conference will be held at Baka Gharbia, at Al Kasami College-November 25-26. (By Ron Ross,
