1. House Fails To Override Health Bill Veto - NY Sun

For the second time in three months, the House failed yesterday to override President Bush's veto of a bill that would greatly increase spending on a popular children's health insurance program.

· Lord, with a grateful heart, we thank You for answered prayer. We praise You for the protection against this bill. Thank You for exposing the details of the long term effect this bill would have on the American people. Bless those who continue to watch over our system to spend money wisely.

· You who love the Lord, hate evil! He preserves the sould of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name. (Ps. 97:10-12)

2. Cheney Urges Congress To Act on Surveillance Law - NY Sun

Vice President Cheney prodded Congress yesterday to extend and broaden an expiring surveillance law, saying "fighting the war on terror is a long-term enterprise" that should not come with an expiration date.

· Father, move over Congress to extend the surveillance law for the duration of the war on terror. We ask that this tool be sustained, so that the plots of the terrorists against our nation can be discovered. · You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; . . . . I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. ( Ps. 32:7a-8)

3. Drought Could Force Nuke-Plant Shutdowns - AP

Nuclear reactors across the Southeast could be forced to throttle back or temporarily shut down later this year because drought is drying up the rivers and lakes that supply power plants with the awesome amounts of cooling water they need to operate.

· Lord, we pray for our nation to be aligned in repentance with Your will, so that we might receive the blessing of rain. We understand that You alone command the rains; we ask for Your mercy to visit us and to replenish our water reservoirs. We ask all of this in Your Name, amen.

· God thunders marvelously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend. He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work. Also by watering he wearieth the thick clouds: he scattereth his bright cloud: And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth. 4. New Al Qaeda Tape Calls for Global Jihad' - Fox News

An Al Qaeda spokesman this week called for unity among Islamic militants worldwide in a new recorded message, according to a U.S. intelligence official.

· Lord, as hatred is stirred up and the enemies against liberty arise, Your people stand united exalting Your Name. We pray for salvation in the enemies' camp. We ask for the kingdom of God to expand. Our trust and protection is in You, therefore we do not fear.

· Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. ( Ps. 2:1, 7,8)

5. Stimulus deal reached - Washington Times

The White House and House leaders yesterday agreed on a $146 billion financial stimulus package that will attempt to stave off a recession by delivering rebate checks to lower- and middle-class Americans of $300 to $600 per person, in addition to child credits of $300.

· Father, thank You that a bipartisan agreement was reached on a stimulus package. We pray that wisdom and unity would come to our beleaguered government, and both parties would begin to cooperate in Your will on the serious issues before us.

· "That they may see and know, and consider and understand together, that the hand of the Lord has done this. . ." (Isaiah 41:20)

6. Bush to Make His Last State of the Union Address on Monday - Voice of America

President Bush's final State of the Union address before both houses of Congress this Monday continues a long-standing tradition in the relations between the executive and legislative branches of the United States government. This year's nationally- televised address comes as several key issues are foremost in the minds of many Americans.

· Pray for President Bush as he works this weekend to finish the details of this very important address to the nation on Monday night. Some are reporting that the President will address -- and support -- the "two-state solution" in Israel . . . the creation of a Palestinian state. Pray that our president will hear, know, and do the will of GOD on this very important matter.

· It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. (Zech. 12:9)

A third day of discussions at the UN Security Council failed to produce a compromise statement that would press for an end to the Israeli lockdown of the Gaza Strip as well as to rocket firing into the Jewish state.

2. Fatah: More attacks to come - Ynet News
-- Hamas leader says attacks 'must continue' - UPI

Fatah activists belonging to the "Brigades of Return" and to "Black September" claimed responsibility for carrying out the shooting attack in Shoafat Thursday evening. The attack left one Israeli dead and another one seriously wounded. A senior Hamas official said in Syria the conflict with Israel must continue until the Israeli siege ends and "the liberation of Palestine" is realized.

3. Border policeman killed by terrorists outside Jerusalem - Jerusalem Post

A border police officer was killed and another female officer was seriously wounded Thursday night in a shooting attack near the entrance to the Shuafat refugee camp in northern Jerusalem.

4. Israeli Official: Israel Wants to Cut Ties With Gaza - Fox News

Israel wants to abandon all responsibility for the Gaza Strip, including the supply of electricity and water, now that the territory's southern border with Egypt has been blasted open, Israel's deputy defense minister said Thursday.

5. PM completely freezes new construction in W. Bank settlements - Ha'aretz

Israel has completely frozen all new construction in West Bank settlements, despite recent comments by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that Israel would treat construction in the major settlement blocs differently from building in most settlements.

KENYA'S VIOLENCE DELAYS CHRISTIAN GROUPS' AID

Families "too scared" to return home.

600 dead, 250,000 displaced.

Violence in the once-hailed democratic oasis continued Thursday between angry young demonstrators and police, making it difficult for Christian aid groups to provide help to affected victims.

More than 600 people have died and 250,000 displaced in Kenya since violence erupted following the disputed presidential election Dec. 27. International aid groups working with local churches have responded to the instability by distributing food and relief supplies to sustain vulnerable children and adults.

Christian aid agency World Vision has provided humanitarian supplies to more than 150,000 people in Kenya. A WV spokesman from Nairobi noted that the humanitarian situation is likely to get worse the longer families are "too scared" to return home because they will be without basic needs such as food and clean water. Christians account for 78 percent of Kenya's 37 million people, while 10 percent of the population is Muslim. (Christian Post 1/17/08)

ATTACKS ON INDIAN CHRISTIANS EXPLODING

Reports surpass 1,000 for 2007, worst toll ever for nation

A new report confirms what Christians in India already feared: 2007 was the worst year since their nation's independence in 1947 for attacks on Christians. The report from Compass Direct cited statistics compiled by the All India Christian Council in confirming that the number of attacks on Christians in 2007 surpassed 1,000 for the first time in India's history.

At least 200 anti-Christian attacks, including four murders, had been documented before the recent violence erupted in Orissa State's Kandhamal district, the report said. There, at least another four Christians were killed and about 800 attacks were reported. At least 730 homes and 95 churches were burned.

The series of attacks prompted Christians to stage a rally to demand government intervention to halt violence against members of the minority religion. A recent rally in Delhi drew an estimated 1,000 Christians and was organized by the All India Christian Council. (WorldNetDaily.com 1/11/08)

Imam offers prayer at Iowa Statehouse
Asks Allah for "victory over those who disbelieve"

The Iowa Legislature started just over a week ago and some people were upset before the first issue was ever addressed. When the session began, a Muslim Imam began the prayer in the Iowa Legislature. This is where the controversy begins. The prayer asked of "Victory over those who disbelieve," and "Protection from the great Satan" among other things.

Pastor Steve Smith of the Evangelical Free Church in Albert City is among those concerned about the Muslim prayer. Rev. Smith admits that he doesn't know about all the levels of Muslim but knows that the Jihadists believe those in the U.S. are the great Satan.

Rev. Smith also wants to point out the mention of "victory over those who disbelieve." He feels "this is a request in the Iowa Legislature for God to grant the Muslims victory over every non-muslim. Not a request for salvation." Smith takes it as a gesture not of prayer but more as a political statement, especially with the wars that have been going on in the Middle East.

"I'm not concerned about a Muslim Imam opening the Legislature in prayer but it concerns me with the statements that were made. He interpreted this prayer from his understanding of Islam." (Storm Lake Pilot Tribune)

COMMENTARY FROM ACT FOR AMERICA

Over the past few months we have sent out reports and articles providing insight into "Cultural Jihad" - the Islamist subversion of a society from within. Cultural Jihad is at a very advanced stage in countries like France and Great Britain, and it is on the march here in America.

What is insidious about Cultural Jihad is that it is not obvious, like acts of terrorism are. But its "end game" is the Islamization of a society and the replacement of existing law with strict Islamic sharia law.

The news story above reports how a Muslim imam opened the Iowa legislative session with a prayer that included an appeal for "victory over those who disbelieve" and "protection from the great Satan." The "great Satan," of course, is the United States. "Victory over those who disbelieve" is consistent with Islamic teaching that Allah is to be dominant over all religions, government, laws and people. This is to be accomplished through "Jihad" - which can take the form of violent conquest or cultural subversion and ultimate subjugation.

That some Muslims are becoming so bold as to proclaim their ultimate objective and declare us their enemy - in such a public forum as a state legislative opening session - speaks volumes as to how far Cultural Jihad has already advanced in America.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is why we continue to issue warnings, alerts and information. This is why we are calling concerned citizens to action and organizing across the country. Those who wish us harm, those who wish to steal our liberties and change our society, are not only "over there." They're in our midst. (Read more)

More Primary News in January

So far this month, we have survived primaries in several states, including Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina (Republican), Michigan and Nevada. The remaining schedule for primaries in January is:

On February 5th, more than 20 states, representing a total of 2,075 delegates, have scheduled their contests for the earliest date allowed by the party without special exception.

· Earnestly intercede against media and special interest manipulation during this primary season. Pray that moral, God-fearing, pro-life, pro-marriage, and pro-family men and women be selected, supported, and find favor in local, state, and national campaigns. Intercede that the Lord reveal His choices, expose corruption, immorality, bribery, the occult, and hidden anti-biblical agendas.

1. New Iran action agreed, officials say - CNN

The U.N. Security Council's permanent members and Germany agreed Tuesday on a new draft resolution on sanctions against Iran, strengthening existing measures over the country's refusal to suspend its nuclear program, officials said.

· Father we pray that these sanctions will actually produce the desired result. But we put our trust in You and Your ability to tear down kings who refuse Your truth.

· "He removes kings and raises up kings;" (Daniel 2:21)

2. US opens personnel files on al-Qaeda recruits - London Times

The photograph shows a young man sporting a red-and-white checkered head-dress, a wispy beard and a zealot's eyes. Majed Hamoud Mubarak al-Harithy, a 23-year-old student from the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca, was smuggled into Iraq from Syria sometime before August 2007. He was carrying a passport, 252 Saudi riyals (£35) and US$101, and was eager to become a martyr.

· Lord we continually thank You for revealing hidden secrets, and that wisdom will guide the security forces assigned to protect our interests.

3. Tentative Deal To Put More $$ In Your Pocket- Fox News

Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a tentative deal Thursday on tax rebates of $300 to $1,200 per family and business tax cuts to jolt the slumping economy.

4. Math Doesn't Add Up For Victors to be Crowned on Super Tuesday- AP

Don't look to crown any presidential nominees on Super Tuesday. The race for delegates is so close in both parties that it is mathematically impossible for any candidate to lock up the nomination on Feb. 5, according to an Associated Press analysis of the states in play that day.

· Lord we continue to ask that Your candidate be chosen from among the wide range of challengers. We bind the plans of our enemy who would have us flounder in division and confusion, and pray for repentance and humility for our candidates.

5. The Battle for Talk Radio: Powerful Foes Want to End the Gabfest - Newsmax.com

The 2008 election has yet to be decided, but one thing is clear: If the Democrats win the White House, expect an all-out attack on talk radio. Political talk, as we know it, could end.

· Lord we cover the privilege of radio with Your Blood, and ask preservation from all attacks. Lord, our constitution guarantees freedom of speech, and its writing was done in honor of You. We stand firmly on Your Word and Your Name as the Lord of America, and pray against all plans to destroy what You gave us.

6. Methodists to Mull Divestment from Israel- NW Sun

The nation's largest and most prominent mainline Protestant denomination, the 11 million-member United Methodist Church - whose members include both President Bush and Senator Clinton - is set to take up the issue of whether to divest from companies that do business with Israel.

· Father as we see part of the platform of deception that is within Your own people, we humbly ask forgiveness and revelation for our brethren. May Your Holy Spirit come to show the truth, and break through the fog placed in their minds and hearts by Satan, who maquerades as an angel of light.

7. Massive California Snowstorm Strands Hundreds on Major Highway- AP

Authorities were helping hundreds of motorists stranded in the snow in Tejon Pass after a powerful storm forced the closure of California's major north-south interstate in the mountains north of Los Angeles.

· Lord we ask Your mercy over America, as we discover more and more places where we have sinned. You are the God of mercy, Lord, and we pray You will help the people stranded in snowstorms or other severe weather incidents from coast to coast.

1. Hamas 'spent months cutting through Gaza wall in secret operation' - London Times

As tens of thousands of Palestinians clambered back and forth between the Gaza strip and Egypt today, details emerged of the audacious operation that brought down a hated border wall and handed the Islamist group Hamas what might be its greatest propaganda coup.

2. Ahmadinejad: Global government, mankind's gravest need - Islamic Republic News Agency

IRI President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said here Monday evening at the inauguration ceremony of new head of National Center for Globalization Studies, "mankind's gravest need today is a global government."

3. In Response to an Israeli Attack, Iran Can, With Syria's Help, Wipe Out Half of Israel - Worthy News

In the event of a conflict with Israel, Iran would use its strategic alliance with Syria to fire missiles at Israel from Syrian territory. It also hinted that, in addition to assistance from Syria, any attack by Israel would also bring retaliation by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hizbullah.

1. Bangladesh: Elderly Christian Woman's Home Set Ablaze - Compass Direct

Unknown attackers tried to burn a 70-year-old woman to death on January 7 after learning that she would be baptized as a Christian next month. Rahima Beoa, who was planning to be baptized on February 13 in Muslim-majority Rangpur district, 248 kilometers (154miles) northwest of the capital city of Dhaka, suffered burns on 70 percent of her body.

"The unknown people wanted to burn alive the elderly woman because they came to know that she would be a Christian in the next month," said Khaled Mintu, a regional supervisor of the Rangpur district of the Isha- E-Jamat Bangladesh denomination. "It was a devilish conspiracy to stop her being a Christian." (Read more)

2. India: Hindu Extremists Plot "Mission 2008" - Compass Direct

Amid reports of forced conversion of Christians to Hinduism following an unprecedented spate of violence over Christmas in Orissa state's Kandhamal district, federal intelligence sources have warned churches of the likelihood of more attacks. (Read more.)

Six Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) extremists stormed a house church, abducted two Christians and severely beat them last Thursday (January 17) in Madhya Pradesh state's Rewa district. (Read more.)

Chaos on Gaza-Egyptian Border

The U.S. blamed Hamas on Wednesday for the plight of Gazans.

"The Palestinians living in Gaza are living under chaos because of Hamas," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. "The blame has to be placed fully at their feet." Palestinian rocket attacks. "One of the reasons that Israel has taken the action it has is because it was sustaining upwards of 150 rockets falling on its territory a day. And so Israel is defending itself," Perino said.

Palestinians (the terror organization Hamas) blew holes in the Gaza-Egypt border wall Wednesday, and tens of thousands of Gazans trapped in the Strip by a tight blockade poured into Egypt to buy food, fuel and other supplies that have become scarce. Egyptian border guards and Hamas police took no action as Palestinians hurried over the border and began returning with bags of food, boxes of cigarettes and plastic bottles of fuel.

The chaotic scenes came on the sixth day of a complete closure of Gaza, imposed by Israel and backed by Egypt, in response to a spike in Gaza rocket attacks on Israeli border towns. Hamas has orchestrated daily demonstrations on the Gaza-Egypt border, in an apparent attempt to appeal to Arab public opinion and pressure Egypt to open the passage. (Jerusalem Post 1/23/08)

Israel Army officials on Wednesday described the situation at the breached Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt as "a first-class security risk."

According to a military source, "The free passage of Palestinians into Egypt and back significantly increases the security threat coming from Gaza." "It's clear that each time civilians cross the border, terror activists are also there, taking advantage of the situation for their own needs," said an Israeli defense official. Israel recently expressed its anger over a similar incident, when hundreds of Palestinian pilgrims, returning from Saudi Arabia, entered Gaza unsupervised. (Ynet News 1/24/08)

PRAY FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM

Lord, despite the promises from President Bush, we reject America as being Israel's protector and proclaim that You - the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - were, are and always will be Israel's strength and shield (Psa. 28:7; 33:20; 115:9). Thank You for the Israel Defense Force (IDF) Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi. Protect him from all political ambitions and surround him with wise counsel (Prov. 20:18; 24:6).

Give to the IDF wisdom on how to stop the weapons smuggling through the tunnels the terrorists have dug on the Egyptian-Gaza border. Help the IDF to protect S'derot and all the southern communities and cities from the Kassam rocket attacks from Gaza. Continue to defend Israel from terror attacks. The Deception of Islam in America is a Threat to National Security

Debate among American leadership over whether Islam is a peaceful religion or a warring theocracy is like the proverbial observation about Nero fiddling while Rome burns. While politicians, religious leaders and bureaucrats debate among themselves the benefits and problems of Islam in America, Islam moves forward with its plans to occupy and destroy this country. The latest public warning flag is the indictment of former Republican Congressman Mark Siljander as part of a terrorist fundraising ring that was laundering tens of thousands of dollars through the Islamic charity Islamic Relief Agency to al Qaeda. The money was taken from the U.S. Agency for International Development

Recently, the federal government named the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) as an unindicted coconspirator in a case tried in Texas regarding the funding and channeling of charity money to Islamic terrorists. The government named several Islamic charities in the case. Texas authorities are still trying to capture an Islamist father who carried out his own Honor killings on his two daughters for having boyfriends-Honor killings are often allowed and encouraged by Islamic law. Federal authorities recently thwarted a plan by Islamists to attack Fort Dix in New Jersey. And there are many other arrests and incidents across the United States of Islamists committing crimes or plotting illegal activities.

CAIR has gained stature among the news media similar to that of the ACLU. Anyone who criticizes Islam in America is opening themselves up for bullying by CAIR. CAIR has tried to shut down free speech in America by organizing a sponsorship boycott of talk show host Michael Savage, who is often outspoken and critical of Islam. In this case, however, Savage has turned the tables on CAIR by filing a lawsuit alleging copyright violations by CAIR. Savage recently expanded his suit to charge CAIR with using extortion, threats, abuse of the court system, and obtaining money via interstate commerce under false and fraudulent circumstances.

Savage's lawsuit charges CAIR is a "political vehicle of international terrorism" and even links the group with support of al Qaeda. Islam is trying to colonize and destroy America. People like Michael Savage have no doubt. It is obvious that Islam should not be allowed to exist in America because of its threat to national security. Islam is using the guise of religion and religious freedom to advance its anti-American agenda as part of the world war of Islamic Aggression. In Matthew 24:4, Jesus warned, "Take heed that no man deceive you." America's leadership is deceived regarding Islam. But our leadership is a reflection of our people. Its time to wake up before its too late.

TOMORROW! DAY OF PRAYER FOR KENYA

Dear Prayer Partners,

Most of you know about the unrest and upheaval going on in Kenya. I was sent this e-mail today and felt it a great opportunity for united focused prayer with other brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ.

Kenya has been one of the most stable nations in this area of Africa. Through the recent election process the enemy is trying to bring this nation under fear, chaos and torment. Let's pray that God will use this to bring transformation to Kenya. Not just peace from the violence, but for the nation to become transformed from the leadership down to every aspect of society.

DAY OF PRAYER FOR KENYA

'If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray, and turn away from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, I will forgive them and will HEAL THEIR LAND.' ( 2 Chronicles 7:14 ).

On January 25th 2008 , we are asking Every Kenyan, Every Friend of Kenyans, Everywhere to take time to make a concerted prayer for Kenya.

We want EVERY Kenyan and Every Friend of Kenyans in EVERY CONTINENT on the face of the earth to be praying together on this one day on behalf of our country.

1. Bush, Lawmakers, Eye Quick Stimulus Package - AFP

Congressional leaders emerged from crisis talks at the White House saying that they hoped to pass, within three to four weeks, a plan for priming the sputtering US economy with an infusion of roughly 140-150 billion dollars.

"I'm confident that we can get an agreement passed, and we can get an agreement passed in relatively short order," Bush said after meeting with lawmakers and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, his lead negotiator.

2. World Stock Markets Assess U.S. Rate Cut - ABC News and International Herald Tribune

The U.S. Federal Reserve, responding to an international stock sell-off and fears about a possible U.S. recession, cut its benchmark interest rate by three-quarters of a percentage point Tuesday, an aggressive move that came a week ahead of a regularly scheduled meeting of the central bank. For the shaken world markets, the move seemed to provide some relief. When trading resumed Tuesday after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Wall Street initially joined in the plunge that had shaken Europe and Asia for two days.

For example, Korean stocks suffered a major blow, ending down 4.4 percent Tuesday, following a 3.3 percent fall the previous day. It was the biggest percentage loss in five months. Trading started with a panic sell-off in reaction to the global equities turbulence and was later suspended for five minutes as the benchmark KOSPI index plunged more than 6 percent. The market picked up by the close, which analysts said was due to solid economic fundamentals.

3. Senate Passes Revised Defense Bill - USA Today

The Senate voted Tuesday to approve a revised defense bill authorizing a 3.5% pay raise for troops while sidestepping a veto showdown with President Bush. The 91-3 vote sends the $696 billion measure to Bush for his expected signature.

4. Thompson Quits Presidential Race - Associated Press

Republican Fred Thompson, the actor-politician who attracted more attention as a potential presidential candidate than as a real one, quit the race for the White House on Tuesday after a string of poor finishes in early primary and caucus states.

This week in Florida, Sen. John McCain, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani are battling for the lead ahead of its January 29th primary. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is evaluating his campaign amid money troubles.

5. Hillary-Obama Feud Alarms Party Officials - Washington Times

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama are increasingly going after each other, prompting top Democrats to warn they are muddying the party's image in advance of the general election.

In an e-mail to supporters, Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic nominee whose campaign was hurt by Republican-funded "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" ads, told voters he will help Mr. Obama fend off attacks. His message does not mention Mrs. Clinton, but notes the anonymous e-mails that are circulating that question Mr. Obama's Christian faith and said, "We're fighting back.

6. Thousands Rally On U.S. Abortion Law Anniversary - AFP

Thousands of anti-abortion activists rallied in Washington Tuesday to mark the 35th anniversary of the Supreme Court's landmark decision, "Roe v. Wade," that legalized the procedure in the United States. Throngs of protesters, many of them young, sang the US national anthem as a wintry drizzle swept the National Mall.

A recorded message from U.S. President George W. Bush blared across the Mall before the rally set out for the Supreme Court. "You're here because you know that all life deserves to be protected. And as you begin your march, I'm proud to be standing with you," Bush said.

Around a quarter of Americans have consistently backed on-demand abortion, a quarter have called for a ban, and half have said abortion should be legal but restricted.

A rainbow appeared during the rally, arching over the U.S. Supreme Court building.

* As You lead, Lord, may those affected by abortion come forward to share their testimonies to help them and even more babies to be saved and restored unto You! May Norma McCorvey, the "Roe" in this heinous ruling, be used mightily by You to help overturn this bad law. We pray that this will be the last year of any remembrance of "Roe v. Wade, " and that those who support it will be saved. In Your Holy Name, we pray these things and ask for Your Holy Spirit to intercede for abortion to be removed from the earth and its peoples that You created. Amen.

Pushes change to infiltration law to cover African humanitarian cases To catch and deter infiltrators, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak recommended on Sunday to erect a security barrier along the border between Israel and Egypt. He also is approaching Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to endorse a Knesset bill regarding the thousands of Africans entering the country who are looking for work compared to those who are considered a security threat.

2. Peres: Peace should be 'decision of the people' - ICEJ News

"In my opinion, the government conducting the negotiations should formulate its position, and bring it to the decision of the people," Israeli President Shimon Peres told the gala opening of the Herzliya Conference, an annual gathering of Israel's top political, military and economic leaders to shape national policies and priorities. The meeting occurred ahead of the upcoming UN Security Council meeting of its five permanent delegates set for late January to discuss the Iran sanctions issue.

Tensions are still running high and the situation is still unstable outside of Nairobi, Kenya, following the disputed elections of December 27. Rival gangs from opposing tribes are roaming the streets, looking for revenge.

2. Penalize 'Re-conversion,' Egyptian Fatwa Says - Assyrian International News Agency

Egypt's top religous body has called for tough penalties on people who convert to Islam for personal reasons, only to re-convert to their old religion, Quds Press news agency reported on Saturday.

The religious ruling, issued by the fatwa committee at Al Azhar, affects mostly Coptic Christians, who often convert to Islam in order to get a divorce, to remarry, or to marry a Muslim. They then convert back to Christianity once they have achieved the desired result. According to the fatwa, the practice of re-converting after converting to Islam is "a grave crime that cannot be met with leniency."

3. Mediterranean EU Members Call for Firm Stance towards Syria - International Christian Concern

Mediterranean EU foreign ministers on Friday urged the European Union to "define a consistent policy towards" Lebanon's neighbor Syria, which has been accused by opponents in Beirut and Western governments of blocking the vote.

The ministers from 10 nations voiced support for Arab League efforts to help rival Lebanese leaders overcome their differences and elect a president, to fill a seat vacant for nearly two months.

"On Lebanon, we pledged our full support to the Arab League initiative to resolve the current political impasse," a statement said. "We also acknowledge the importance of the role played by Syria. Consequently the EU should define a consistent policy towards Syria," it added.

4. Pope Calls for Religious Freedom in Arab Countries - Reuters

Pope Benedict on Friday issued a strong call for religious freedom in Arab countries, saying everyone should have the right to practise their faith openly and to convert to other religions if they wanted.

The Pope, making his call in an address to Catholic bishops from Arab regions, also said he was concerned that parts of the Middle East risked becoming just "an archaeological site" if an exodus of Christians forced out by violence continued.

"I dearly hope that authentic religious freedom could become reality everywhere and that everyone's right to practise their religion freely, or to change it, should not be impeded," he told the bishops working in the Middle East and Africa. "This is a primordial right for every human being," he added in his French-language speech.

President Bush Says He Will Return to Israel During His Presidency

Browse the world media today and you will find the headlines have President George W. Bush instructing Israel to "end the occupation. Now is the time to make difficult choices," he said in newspaper and TV reports around the world. "The agreement must establish a Palestine as a homeland for the Palestinian people just as Israel is a homeland for the Jewish people" Bush says in a favored quote.

While journalists show their personal agenda by the portions of a speech they choose to report, the question for the President and the various negotiators remains: Who are the Palestinian people? Are they not a creation of the late Yasser Arafat rather than an ancient people? Is it not true, "the Palestinian people" are simply Arabs making a claim to the ancient land of Israel?

Bush is walking a fine line. He is speaking so as to cajole the Arab network, nations like Saudi Arabia and Egypt, who have been created to be the US influence in the region. He is also trying to be responsive to his Christian teaching on the importance of Israel and its connection to his faith. But can he have it both ways?

Bush said, a deal establishing the Palestinian state could be finalized during his term. Then to do the political thing he changed emphasis and insisted Arab countries should reach out to Israel. "I call upon the Arab countries to reach out to Israel, a step that is long overdue," he said.

Bush requested he visit Bethlehem and Capernaum, locations important in the life of Christ. But geography is not the evidence of faith, love is.

"I will return," said the President. Through his spokesman, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, Bush announced he would return at least once more before his term expires in January, 2009. Nabil Abu Rudeina, a spokesman for Mahmoud Abbas said the announcement by Bush was "the first step toward a real peace." He added, "Israel must understand that the settlements are illegal."

My question to President Bush and the Arab delegation remains: "What will happen if Kassams are still falling on Sderot, a year from now?" Will this visit be assessed as a failure? Oh there is one other question, "What will be the name of the Israeli Prime Minister at that time?"
