The Middle East in Focus

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

1. UN to Explore New Israel-PA Peace Effort - Israel National News

The United Nations will explore options with Israel's new government for a return to negotiations on creating a Palestinian state within a reasonable time frame, the body's new envoy said Tuesday, according to AFP.

Nickolay Mladenov, the UN special Middle East coordinator, told the Security Council that "the coming period will be critical to the future of the peace process."

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) have been comatose since a major American push for a final deal ended in failure in April 2014.

UN efforts to revive the peace process were effectively on hold in recent months as Israel held elections and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu formed a new government that was announced last week.

Mladenov said he and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon "will be engaging the new government to explore realistic options for a return to meaningful negotiations towards a two-state solution within a reasonable time frame."

2. IMF Calls for Donor Support for PA Territories - Israel National News

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) called on Tuesday for more donor aid to support the economic recovery of the Palestinian Authority (PA) -assigned areas of Judea and Samaria and of Gaza, AFP reported.

The IMF said in a report that the reconstruction process in Gaza following last summer's war between Israel and Hamas "is moving far more slowly than expected."

The economic cost of the 50-day war is estimated at $4 billion for Gaza, the IMF noted.

"While notable progress has been made recently with the provision of materials for the repair of individual homes, larger construction projects that are required for a job-creating economic recovery are still pending," the report said.

According to the IMF, of the $3.5 billion promised for the reconstruction of Gaza at the Cairo Conference in October, only about 27 percent had been disbursed by mid-April.

The Washington-based crisis lender, which provides technical assistance to PA-controlled territories, said the economic outlook for them is "highly uncertain". The economy fell into recession in 2014 for the first time since 2006.

3. US, Israel said to discuss 'compensation' in wake of emerging nuke deal - Times of Israel

Israel and the US were reportedly holding preliminary and unofficial talks over a "compensation" package for Jerusalem that would include the delivery of advanced weapons in exchange for the Netanyahu government's quiet acceptance of the emerging nuclear deal with Iran.

The package could include an increase of the amount of F-35 fighter jets the US was set to supply Israel with and additional batteries for Israel's anti-missile defense systems, according to reports in both Haaretz (Hebrew) and Yediot Ahronoth this week.

A senior Obama administration official told Yediot that "the White House is willing to pay a hefty price to get some quiet from the Israelis at this point. We are surprised the demand has not been made."

But the newspaper also quoted an unnamed Israeli source as conveying a more ambivalent stance about the reported talks.

4. Iran-backed jihadi threat is top priority for new government, Netanyahu says - Times of Israel

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally presented his new cabinet at the President's Residence in Jerusalem on Tuesday, and vowed to put the fight against Islamist extremists at the top of his agenda.

"This government has been established at a time of great challenges and opportunities," Netanyahu said. "Our first challenge is to ensure the security of Israel in the face of accumulating threats around us. Radical Islam is lapping at all our borders, nearly all in the form of factions and forces led by Iran and other radical elements."

He said, however, that the country would seek to forge new alliances given the regional turmoil, hinting at Israel's shared interests with Sunni states against Iran's nuclear program.

5. Defying US, Iranian warships escort cargo vessel toward Yemen -Times of Israel

Two Iranian warships have joined a cargo ship that Tehran says is carrying supplies to Yemen.

US Army Col. Steve Warren said the ships linked up overnight Monday, setting up a possible conflict as the US insists the supplies go to Djibouti, where the United Nations is coordinating humanitarian aid for Yemen.

A US official said there's no evidence the Iranian ship is carrying lethal or military aid. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The vessel, the Iran Shahed, is carrying nearly 2,800 tons of aid including flour, rice, canned food, medical supplies and bottled water, all urgently needed in the conflict-wracked and impoverished state, according to Iran. It is expected to reach port on Thursday, and entered the Gulf of Aden on Sunday.

6. US Must Ensure Israel Can Destroy Iran's 'Deeply Buried Nuclear Sites,' Reps Say - Algemeiner

The U.S. must provide Israel with 37,000 pound bunker-buster bombs to ensure the Jewish state has the means to "destroy Iran's most deeply buried nuclear sites," two congresspeople wrote on Monday.

"A longstanding component of America's Iran policy has been a credible military threat to ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon . . . Providing Israel with a stronger capability to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities would help deter Iran from ever trying to break any [nuclear agreement] it may sign," wrote representatives Grace Meng (D-Queens) and Lee Zeldin (R-LI) in an opinion piece for the New York Post.

The two called for the U.S. to boost Israel's cache of bunker-busting bombs, which the representatives said no longer could destroy Iran's most fortified nuclear sites, by providing the Jewish state with GBU-57 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs, alternately known at Massive Ordnance Penetrators or MOPs.

7. Promising nonviolence, Ethiopian-Israelis rally in Tel Aviv - Times of Israel

Ethiopian-Israeli protest against police brutality and discrimination was taking place in Tel Aviv on Monday evening with police expecting crowds of several thousand and with activists pledging that it would not turn violent.

The rally got off to a slow start with some several dozen protesters in attendance. It slowly grew to several hundred over the first hour. It was being held on one of the hottest days of the year so far.

"This is a national protest, not just an Ethiopian one. We are saying 'enough,'" one of the organizers, Eyayae Avraham, from a group called Dor Amitz (Brave Generation), told The Times of Israel.

"I hope the police don't shoot us, don't use [tear] gas, don't use stun grenades. This is a national problem. . . If the law doesn't protect us, what's it good for?"

The Daily Brief

1. President Barack Obama Bans Some Military-Style Equipment Provided To Police - Huffington Post

In an unexpected move, President Barack Obama on Monday will ban the federal government from providing certain military equipment to police departments. Effective immediately, the government will no longer provide local law enforcement with tracked armored vehicles, grenade launchers and bayonets. Other items like explosives and riot equipment will be transferred to police only if they provide additional certification and assurances that the gear will be used responsibly.

The president's action is part of a broader effort to relieve tensions between law enforcement and minority communities after the deaths of several black men at the hands of police in Ferguson, Missouri; Baltimore; and other cities. . . (Read more)

- Lord of the Nations, we thank You that You keep Your eye on the sparrow, and You certainly are watchful over us. We find it difficult to have faith that Obama has any good intentions in limiting military equipping of local law enforcement agencies to control the proper use of such equipment. Our trust, however, is in You. We pray that You will show Yourself strong on our behalf, and desire to truly bring peace to our streets, and hearts. We pray for revival to sweep our streets and cities, and bring many to You as Saviour. Amen.

- "Then, if My people, who bear My name, will humble themselves, pray, seek My Face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14)

2. Obama, GCC Leaders Forge Consensus on Iran - US News & World Report

No one expects the GCC countries to embrace a nuclear agreement with Iran, given the well-earned animosity and mistrust between Iran and some of the GCC countries, especially Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and the bloodletting taking place in Syria and Yemen. And there will of course be leaks about the understandable anxieties of certain Arab leaders with Iranian behavior whether there is a nuclear agreement or not, as change is neither immediate nor smooth, let alone assured.

But the detailed US-GCC Joint Statement following the May 13-14 Washington Summit should now be the benchmark for the positions of the United States and the GCC in addressing Iran and the broader issues of regional security in the Middle East. The summit statement should nullify the tired talking point by US critics that the Barack Obama administration is somehow selling out its Arab allies by pursuing a deal with Iran. Following the Camp David Summit, the United States and the GCC are, at least for now, and with eyes wide open about Iran, on the same page. (Read more)

- Father, we come against spirits of deception that wish to cause confusion and put these Arab Gulf States at risk from their own fellow Muslims. We ask that You would continue to expose those evil plans and motives and hidden things plotted in secret, and shine the Your light on their true objectives. We pray for Your discernment, and wisdom to be given, and that Your hand will roll back the scroll to reveal truth and real motivations. Protect those who call upon Your Name. Amen.

-"Everything that is hidden will be shown, and everything that is secret will be made known. 3) What you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an inner room will be shouted from the housetops. I tell you, my friends, don't be afraid of people who can kill the body but after that can do nothing more to hurt you." (Luke 12:2-4)

3. ISIS Made an Extremely Disturbing Threat Against Obama. Here's Why People Should Take It Seriously - IJReview

ISIS militants issued a harrowing threat against President Barack Obama and the U.S., following a raid on an ISIS compound over the weekend that took out the organization's chief financial operative Abu Sayyaf. In a tweet posted on Saturday, an ISIS militant said that the terrorist group would kill President Obama as well as "worshipers of the cross." He even tweeted a statement of the group's intentions . . . Vocativ translated the tweet: "If your goal is killing Abu Sayyaf then our goal is killing Obama and the worshipers of the cross. We have attacks coming against you." While such threats are extremely unlikely of success, they aren't necessarily bluffs: ISIS won't get to Obama, but terrorists are able to carry out attacks on high-ranking American officials. (Read more)

- Lord, we thank You that You know the thoughts and intents of the Heart, and You hold the hearts of the kings in Your hands, and turn them whichever way You desire. We come against spirits of fear that would endeavor to frighten Your people, and ask for peace and steadfast endurance. Thank You for Your protection over us. Please ensnare these evil feet in the nets of their own making, and may they experience their own destruction by Your hand. Amen.

-"Rejoice in union with the Lord always! I will say it again: rejoice! Let everyone see how reasonable and gentle you are. The Lord is near! Don't worry about anything; on the contrary, make your requests known to God by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving. Then God's shalom, passing all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with the Messiah Yeshua." (Philippians 4:4-7)

4. British 'White Widow' rises in Al-Shabaab, reportedly had role in 400 murders - Fox News

The British woman known as "the white widow" has risen through the ranks of the Somalia-based Islamic terrorist organization Al-Shabaab, and has had a hand in more than 400 murders, according to counter-terrorism officials in the African nation.

Samantha Lewthwaite, a 31-year-old Muslim convert and mother of four whose husband was one of the London 7/7 suicide bombers, has the confidence of Al-Shabaab leader Ahmad Umar and played a key role in last month's slaughter of 148 people at a university in Kenya, according to Somali security chiefs. "This lady sits at the right hand of the leader directing attacks," a Somali security chief told The Mirror. (Read more)

- Abba,we come to You asking specifically for the heart and soul of Samantha Lewthwaite. She has been used as a weapon against Your people, and we therefore ask You to disarm her, and turn her heart to You. May she be used by You to save Your people, not destroy them. May she realize the awesomeness of being able to sit at Your right hand as Your Bride, rather than the right hand of the leader of this murderous terrorist group. We ask that You arrest her heart and command her to "cease and desist" from her evil doings, and reveal the Light of Your Truth to her, we pray, Amen.

-"Draw out also the spear, and block the way against them that persecute me. Say unto my soul, 'I am thy salvation.'"(Psalm 35:3)So no weapon that is used against you will defeat you. You will show that those who speak against you are wrong. These are the good things My servants receive. Their victory comes from Me, says the Lord." (Isaiah 54:17)

5. U.S. Senate is Unanimous: Countries Must Promote Religious Freedom . . . Or Else! - CBN

The Senate has unanimously approved legislation promoting international religious freedom. The measure, sponsored by Sen. James Lankford, R-OK, requires the White House to take religious freedom into account when negotiating trade deals with other countries.

"Our greatest export is our American value. The dignity of each person, hard work, innovation, and liberty-that's what we send around the world. It has the greatest impact," Lankford said during a floor speech on the amendment.

The measure was added as an amendment to the overall negotiating objectives outlined in Trade Promotion Authority legislation. The Senate approved the amendment by a vote of 92 to 0. If signed into law, it would be the first time in history that religious freedom considerations would be required for international trade discussions. (Read more)

- Father God, we rejoice today at the news of the passage of this bill, by a unanimous vote, which will advance the cause of religious freedom worldwide. Thank You, Lord, in Jesus' name, amen and amen!

- "You are my God, and I will praise you; you are my God, and I will exalt you." (Psalm 118:28)

6. AFA Calls on the US Senate to Pass This Pro-life Bill, as the House Did Just Last Week - American Family Association

(Tupelo, MS)-After the House of Representatives passed the historic Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act last week, American Family Association (AFA) is calling on the Senate to follow the example and do the same to protect unborn babies.

On Wednesday, the House passed the bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. "The House of Representatives stepped up last week to protect innocent lives and possibly begin to reverse the ugly mark that abortion has left on America's landscape," said AFA President Tim Wildmon. "Now, the Senate must follow suit and pass this measure as well, in a unified voice to respect and protect life." (Read more)

- Lord, we continue to lift up the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act before You, praising You for its passage in the House and asking for its swift passage in the Senate. We call forth a veto-proof margin in both chambers, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways." (Job 22:28)

7. AP misquotes pope on 'angel of peace' - WND

Pope Francis evoked shock when it was widely reported he called the Holocaust-denying Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "an angel of peace."

Praise poured in from left-leaning quarters, while outrage erupted on the right. It turns out, however, the pope didn't say that.

The establishment media put those words in his mouth by widely using a misquote from the Associated Press.

In fact, what the pope actually said Saturday may have had the exact opposite meaning of what was attributed to him. (Read more)

- Lord God, we are relieved that this record has now been corrected. We pray that this new report will be heard by all who need to know the true facts about the visit by Abbas with the Pope. In Jesus' name, amen.

- "Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven." (Matthew 6:10)

8. Anxiety grips Hill over US strategy for ISIS, possibility of Iran fueling violence - Fox News

The fall of Ramadi to Islamic State forces -- despite Obama administration efforts to downplay it as a short-term setback -- has kicked up a sandstorm of problems for the White House: 1) The possibility that Iran-backed Shiite militias will take a lead role in the fight to retake the city; 2) Fresh political fallout over President Obama's decision to withdraw virtually all troops in 2011 -- against the advice of his top military commanders -- only to watch hard-fought U.S. gains undone by ISIS; and, 3) Congressional pressure from both sides of the aisle to rethink the current anti-ISIS military strategy.

Taken together, the problems pose a political and strategic migraine for an administration trying to manage the Iraq-Syria madness -- while also forging a nuclear deal with Iran, seeking a resolution in war-torn Yemen and keeping tabs on the rest of the tumultuous post-Arab Spring nations, including Egypt and Libya.

On Tuesday, congressional pressure mounted over the course of the U.S. military's anti-ISIS strategy. . . (Read more)

- Father God, if we ever needed Your wisdom, it is now. We do praise You for the safe return of the Navy Seals from their raid this weekend, but we are grieved to see ISIS retake a city that our own troops fought so long and so hard to gain for a "free Iraq."

Lord God, only You know the way ahead for these nations that You -- not man -- would ordain in the days ahead. We ask that our leaders in Congress and in the White House would now come to You, on bended knee, freely confessing our need for You. Help us, Lord, we pray, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding . . .
For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding."
(Proverbs 2: 2,6)

9. US interrogation team in Iraq to grill wife of ISIS leader - Fox News

A special team of CIA, FBI and Pentagon interrogators has been dispatched to Iraq to grill the wife of the key ISIS leader killed in a daring commando raid last Saturday -- but sources told Fox News that the questioning, which will include queries about murdered American aid worker Kayla Mueller, will stop short of using rough techniques. "We are not going to be slapping her around," the official said, but would not disclose any more details.

In addition to taking out a key ISIS leader and the man responsible for the terrorist army's black market oil trade and capturing his wife, the raid netted a "treasure trove" of sensitive information, according to Rep. Mike McCaul, R-Texas. Officials believe the terrorist leader's wife may know even more about ISIS' operations. (Read more)

- Lord God, we cringe to think of the methods that are available to our intelligence agencies to extract information from our enemies. We thank You that it is being reported that the interrogators will "stop short" of using the most drastic measures to glean whatever information this woman may be hiding.

We do thank You, Lord, for her capture, and we ask for her salvation, in Jesus' name. We thank You, too, for the "treasure trove" of sensitive information that we have secured during this raid. May it be used to advance our war on terror and against the ISIS organization, to the fullest extent, by Your hand of grace and of mercy. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "By this I know that You are pleased with me, Because my enemy does not shout in triumph over me." (Psalm 41:11)

10. Severe storms speed across Texas and Oklahoma, at least two tornadoes confirmed - Fox News

At least two tornadoes touched down late Tuesday as a series of severe storms caused damage and flooding in parts of north Texas and southern Oklahoma.

One tornado touched down in Mineral Wells, Texas, about 80 miles west of Dallas, at approximately 7 p.m. local time Wednesday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but a police dispatcher told the paper that the twister had caused the collapse of an abandoned bank building, damaged two churches, and torn the roof off a government building.

A second tornado was reported to have passed through the town at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time, but that was not immediately confirmed by the National Weather Service.

Earlier Tuesday, a tornado touched town in the town of Giddings, Texas, approximately 55 miles east of Austin. (Read more)

- Lord God, the main headline on Fox News describes this as "wicked weather," and we agree. Thank You, Lord, that there are no reports of fatalities in this full report, and injuries are minimal. We call forth Your angels to protect America in this season of violent storms, and we do this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways." (Psalm 91:11)

Early election results

While it is very early in the presidential election cycle, there are some things that are coming clear pretty quickly. As a veteran and successful political media consultant for over 14 years, one thing I have learned is how to "smell a rat." In Christian circles, we might call it "discernment." There are so many times these days that Christians sit on the sidelines because the candidate choice does not come close to the Biblical standards of character and leadership. Not wanting to vote for the "lesser of two evils" is then the vote. Hence, America suffers a continuous sliding scale of increasingly poor leadership, not only at the presidential level, but also at the local and state levels. Christians can change all that.

Even with PEW Research saying that Christianity is on the decline in America, down to 70.8% of the population, this is a very powerful voting block. Unfortunately, the weakness in the pulpit, the emotional, self-indulgent, and extra-biblical state of the church, and the unwillingness of many to preach the word as it pertains to sin and accountability, has resulted in Christianity being divided. This has allowed cunning politicians to unite diverse voting blocks--women's rights, racial equality, gender/gay rights, animal rights, environmentalists, etc., and marshall them into election victories. As Christ said in Mark 3:25, "And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand."

My approach is to line up my two or three best choices for each office and weigh them against Biblical standards, especially of character and leadership, then choose the closest one. In my opinion, this is one of the ways we are going to incrementally get this nation back to any standard of biblical morality. The other ways include getting involved in the party of your choice (also one that should fit biblical standards) and take part in selecting the candidates--local, state, national. Christians, as a united block have a lot of power. This is why the major candidates for the Republican Party are making their rounds to the churches and speaking about God and country. You don't hear that much from the Democratic Party.

There is one candidate, however, that stands out among all the rest. It is Hillary Clinton. No other candidate in the current field is as morally bankrupt, unethical and corrupt. Her involvement in the deaths of those men in Benghazi alone should land her in jail. Her latest scandal of using a private email for her official State Department correspondence would land most anyone except the privileged in jail. Who knows what State secrets are in the hands of America's enemies. The list of her corrupt dealings span decades. In my personal opinion she is no less than Belshazzar, the son of Nebuchadnezzar, who in Daniel 5:27, is "weighed in the balances, and art found wanting." The devil is a liar and deceiver, and Clinton aligns accordingly. For me, the early election results are in, and Hillary Clinton stands alone.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Rev. Graham on 'Transgender' Policy

Rev. Graham on 'Transgender' Policy:

It's 'Wicked,' and 'They Want to Brainwash Our Children'

The plan by the Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia, one of the largest school systems in the nation, to implement a "transgender" policy and teach middle school kids about "gender fluidity" -- that there is a sexuality spectrum -- is "wicked," it is "a lie," and clear evidence that "misguided educators" want to "brainwash our children," said Rev. Franklin Graham, an evangelical leader and son of world-renowned preacher Billy Graham.

"Can you believe these idiots? Gender fluidity?" said Rev. Graham in a May 16 Facebook post. "Here's an example of some of the wicked things misguided educators today want to expose our children to--look at this Fox News story."

"It should make your blood boil that they want to brainwash our children!" said Rev. Graham.

"Teaching them that there is no difference between boys and girls is nothing more than a lie," he said. "We are different because God made us different. School districts should not allow this poison anywhere near the classroom!"

As CNSNews.com reported on May 7, "The U.S. Department of Education is demanding that the Fairfax County Public Schools, in the Virginia suburbs just outside Washington, D.C., "revise their non-discrimination policies to include gender identity" or risk losing the federal funds they receive for their schools. The "nondiscrimination" would apply to transgender students and teachers.
Actions like this, which were largely done under the radar and without any significant notice to parents beforehand by the Fairfax County Public Schools, indicate the need for Bible-believing Christians to be involved in local politics," said the reverend.

"Christians upholding biblical principles on school boards could help put a stop to outrageous initiatives like this," he said. "Let's fight back by getting the names of Christians on the ballots and working to make a difference for the future of our nation." (Read more)

Geologists: Hidden Cascades volcano may pose a threat

SEATTLE - Monday marks the 35th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens that killed 57 people.

Mount Rainier is considered the world's most dangerous volcano because of its size and how close it is to the population centers of Tacoma and Seattle.

But there's another mountain you've probably never seen that's getting attention for the risks it poses to the Seattle area. . . Unlike most of the volcanoes in the Cascade Mountains that are viewable from Interstate 5 or even Seattle, few people notice Glacier Peak. It lurks within in the northern Cascades in Snohomish County and has a record of violent, even extreme eruptions. (USA Today) Read more.

The Good News Corner

Do These Eerie Trumpet Noises Coming From the Sky Point to Christ's Return?

This strange sound has been heard around the globe for nearly a decade, but nobody has an explanation.

"And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they shall gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other." -Matthew 24:31

It's been happening around the world for almost ten years: strange trumpet-like sounds that are so eerie they've caused people to stop dead in their tracks and look up to the sky to find the source.

A report in the Daily Mail, noted that encounters with the noise has "caused some people to have vivid nightmares for days" following the event. No doubt when the angels sound their trumpets, it will strike fear into the hearts of those unprepared to face eternity.

Aaron Taylor of Montana, who was able to catch the sounds on a recording on February 18, 2012, told the Daily Mail: "I was taking my daughter out for her daily exercise along with my dog. I started to hear the sounds. . . my dog perked her ears up and my daughter stopped in her tracks."

"The whole 'End of the World' thing popped instantly into my head," he continued. "What if this was one of those sounds?"

The Daily Mail report listed several possible theories to the sound ranging from tectonic plates grinding to atmospheric pressure, to "The Apocalypse and the Seven Trumpets of Heaven."

But NASA, which says the Earth has "natural radio emissions," notes that "if humans had radio antennas instead of ears, we'd have a remarkable symphony of strange noises coming from our own planet."

Still the natural speaks of the invisible and when the "Great and Terrible Day of the Lord" comes as a Thief in the Night, many will be thankful to hear the trumpet call.
