"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

1. WATCH: Jerusalem Day riots at the Nablus Gate - Jerusalem Online

It is a tense Jerusalem Day in the Israeli capital city. Dozens of people clashed this evening with Israeli security officials near Nablus Gate in the Old City of the Israeli capital city of Jerusalem. Two Palestinian rioters were arrested. The Police are preparing for the arrival of reinforcements to come to the area of the Jerusalem Day celebrations near the Western Wall due to the increased fear of disturbances.

In the afternoon, several dozen Arabs from East Jerusalem arrived to the area of Nablus Gate and started clashes with Jews. The demonstrators waved Palestinian flags. They threw stones and glass bottles at security forces. One of the policemen was wounded from a stone that hit his head.

2. Minister Ariel: Jerusalem Will be Rebuilt, Not Divided - Israel National News

Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel (Jewish Home) on Sunday evening participated in a rally at the Western Wall, after the traditional Rikudegalim ("flag dance") in honor of Jerusalem Day.

In his remarks at the rally, Ariel spoke of Rabbi Moshe Levinger of blessed memory, who was laid to rest earlier Sunday in Hevron, and promised to continue his legacy of building in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and all of Israel.

"These days we lost Rabbi Moshe Halevi Levinger, the rabbi of the settlement movement in Judea and Samaria and in all parts of the Land of Israel. We are all his disciples," he said.

"I ask you - will Jerusalem will be divided? No. Will Jerusalem be built? Yes," continued Ariel. "We are all united in continuing the rebuilding of Jerusalem. I ask all of you, look at the Temple Mount and see what a great miracle it was when it was liberated."

3. Meet the ministers of Israel's 34th government - Israel Hayom

While the major Israeli television channels, which provided live coverage of the swearing in of the government last week, focused mainly on the drama behind the scenes, the new ministers spent an evening of festivities and excitement with their families.

Some of them had waited a long time to become part of the top echelon of the government, first spending years serving the public as ordinary MKs. Others, like Kulanu members Yoav Galant and Avi Gabai, jumped directly into the deep end, and were appointed ministers while taking their first steps in politics.

4. PA, Hamas Blast Netanyahu Over Comments on United Jerusalem - Israel National News

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's pledge during Jerusalem Day that the capital will never be divided again was not well accepted by Palestinian Arabs.

"I pledge that as Prime Minister I will continue to develop the city. The city was united, and will never be divided again," Netanyahu said at the Jerusalem Day celebration at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva on Sunday.

He made similar comments on Monday during a special Knesset session in honor of Jerusalem Day, saying Jerusalem will remain united regardless of any future negotiations with the PA.

"Jerusalem will not be divided again, it will not return to becoming a battlefield and a city of storybooks," Netanyahu said, adding, "We are building all over the city, including in the Arab neighborhoods. We do not build in Jerusalem to confront the international community, we do it responsibly and judiciously and that is our natural right."

Later Monday, both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Hamas movement slammed Netanyahu over his remarks, according to the IANS news agency.

5. Tel Aviv anti-racism rally marred by infighting, but not violence - Times of Israel

Some 1000 protesters gathered again in Tel Aviv Monday for a second time in recent weeks to demonstrate against police brutality and discrimination against the Ethiopian-Israeli community. But while Monday's zigzagging march across the city center was undisturbed by violence, it was beset by infighting.

Many participants expressed disappointment at internal disagreements and at the event's overall tame nature compared to the May 3 protest in Rabin Square, in which dozens of police and protesters were arrested and injured.

Ethiopian Israelis and their supporters have staged demonstrations across the country in response to video footage released last month showing a policeman and a police volunteer assaulting Ethiopian-Israeli soldier Yosef Salamsa in Holon.

6. Top EU diplomat heads to Mideast to reboot peace talks - Times of Israel

The European Union's top diplomat said Monday that she's going to the Mideast to try to revive the moribund peace process, and to challenge Israel and the Palestinians to share their ideas on how to break the deadlock.

Federica Mogherini, the EU's high representative for foreign affairs, said, "I believe that one thing is clear to everybody in the region, that the status quo is not an option."

"My very early visit has a political meaning," Mogherini told a press conference, according to a Reuters report. She took over as the head of EU foreign policy last November, taking over for Catherine Ashton.

Mogherini was set to meet with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during her two-day visit.

1. PRAY: ISIS Seizes Iraqi City of Ramadi; Christians among Thousands Fleeing for Their Lives -ASSIST News Service

The Iraqi city of Ramadi has fallen to Islamic State (ISIS) after government forces abandoned their positions, officials say. The police and military made a chaotic retreat after days of intense fighting, leaving many of its population, including Christians, to flee for their lives, knowing the deadly fate that awaited them if they remained.

One media report said that bodies, some burned, littered the streets as local officials reported the militants carried out mass killings of Iraqi security forces and civilians. Online video showed Humvees, trucks and other equipment speeding out of Ramadi, with soldiers gripping onto their sides. "Ramadi has fallen," said Muhannad Haimour, a spokesman for the governor of Anbar province. "The city was completely taken. . . The military is fleeing."

- Father God, we cry out to You for the suffering people of Ramadi, especially the Christians. Lord, do not let Your light and witness go out in this area. We pray for warring angels to surround the innocent people there as they flee, and that in the midst of persecution Your Church would grow stronger than ever. Bless You, Lord, for hearing our prayer and intervening in this serious matter.

-"For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever; but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off." (Psalms 37:28)

2. White House: Ramadi capture by Islamic State a 'setback' - CNSNews.com

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) - The White House calls the capture of the Iraqi city of Ramadi by Islamic State militants a "setback" and vows to help Iraqis reclaim it. White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Monday the United States is supporting Iraqi forces with precision airstrikes and military advice. He would not comment on whether the victory by the militants would prompt a change in U.S. strategy.

Schultz said the Obama administration knew that the fight against Islamic State would be long and have ebbs and flows. He said there had been 32 airstrikes in Ramadi in the last three weeks, including eight over the past 24 hours. He said the strikes would continue "until Ramadi's retaken."

- Lord, we pray for our leaders to speak strong words that will bring Your kind of order in this area of the world, and that these words would be backed up by forthright action to correct the injustices that exist there. 3. Biker Gang Fight Leaves Nine Dead in Texas - Breitbart

Waco police say they had a swat team on scene along with Texas Department of Public Safety troopers before violence broke out because of intel that there would be trouble. At least five biker gangs involved including local chapters, statewide chapters and national biker gangs, according to Sgt. Swanton. A physical altercation broke out during an argument in the men's room. The fight moved to the bar area and then outside. Swanton said these were criminal gangs that were engaged in criminal behavior and had criminal intent.

- Praise, You, our Lord, for the knowledge the police had ahead of time about the planned violence. Lord, we pray that any further incidences of violence would be met with a police force which is prepared ahead of time. In the name of Jesus, we bind up all plans for destruction and violence for Waco and all other law-abiding communities.

4. Smoking gun! Hillary knew Benghazi attack planned 10 days in advance - WND

Judicial Watch has obtained previously classified documents from the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of State revealing that DOD almost immediately reported that the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was planned and carried out by al-Qaida and Muslim Brotherhood-linked terrorists.

A federal court ordered the government hand over more than 100 pages of previously secret documents that showed then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other senior Obama officials were given reports within hours of the Sept. 11, 2012, attack. In those memos, the DOD described details of a plan 10 days in advance "to kill as many Americans as possible." The plans for attack had nothing to do with a provocative YouTube video by an obscure filmmaker, which the administration repeatedly blamed for the attacks.

They had everything to do with terrorists from the "Brigades of the Captive Omar Abdul Rahman," the so-called "Blind Sheikh." Rahman is serving life in prison for his involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and other terrorist acts. The new documents also provide the first official confirmation that shows the U.S. government was aware of arms shipments from Benghazi to rebels trying to bring down the government of Bashar Assad in Syria.

5. Senate fight looms as law allowing NSA to collect Americans' phone data set to expire - Fox News

A major supporter of the National Security Agency's anti-terrorism surveillance program, which allows the bulk collection of Americans' phone records, is pushing for an extension of the program, setting up a battle with critics who argue that Congress must fix the current law or let it expire. "This has been a very important part of our effort to defend the homeland since 9/11," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Sunday while defending the program in an interview on ABC's "This Week." "We know that the terrorists overseas are trying to recruit people in our country to commit atrocities in our country."

McConnell, R-Ky., introduced a bill Thursday night that would temporarily renew the expiring provisions of the Patriot Act for two months. The renewal would buy time for the Senate to debate, specifically, Section 215 of the Patriot Act, which authorizes the government to collect personal records without a warrant and has been the target of controversy since NSA contractor Edward Snowden revealed in 2013 that it was being used by the NSA to capture and retain millions of Americans' personal phone records. The provisions are currently scheduled to sunset on June 1. (Read more)

A prophetic people and persecution

Americans are worried about persecution. They see many of the religious freedoms dwindling away by the actions of the leaders who have been elected to represent the people, but represent the self interests of the devil himself. But persecution in the United States is not at the level it is around the rest of the world. We become upset and worried if the government uses the force of law on someone who refuses to go against their religious beliefs. In the Middle East, however, women and children are being raped, sold into slavery, tortured, even beheaded or burned to death by Muslims because they are considered infidels. In China, homes are bull-dozed if Christians are found to be meeting in them.

If not for America, the world would be a dark place. We send aid, protection, food, and the gospel around the world. Even though our country is in a moral decline, and the leadership we elect are often evil deceivers, Americans have stood the test of time, using religious freedom and freedom of speech to advance the kingdom of God. No matter how convoluted and circuitous the path America has taken, Americans more often than not have stood in the breach and have held the line for what is right and good. For a generation, it appears we have taken leave of our good senses and have allowed our nation to slowly decline. We are now starting to face the consequences of this lack of proper standing and engagement.

But take courage, and be encouraged. As is written 1 Peter 2:9,"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light." You, yes you, are a prophetic person who was born specifically for this time. When you accepted Christ, you may not have understood about counting the cost. Jesus said that we would have to take up the cross to follow him. Those costs are becoming more evident in this day and age for those of us who live in America. Our leadership is poor. Our nation is in decline. Our Christianity is being challenged. As is our faith. But you are a chosen generation.

Peter had a lot to say about persecution. He knew it well. He writes in 1 Peter 3:12, "For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous. And his ears are open unto their prayers: But the face of the Lord is against them that do evil." He asks, "And who is he that will harm you, if you be followers of that which is good." Peter said it is better to suffer for righteousness' sake, verses 14-15, "happy are you: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ." You are a prophetic person. Rise up. Stand as so!

End time clock moves another tick

Thanks to the meddling of the current US "president" in deploying unauthorized military and air support, Libya was handed over to the Administration's foreign policy partner, the Muslim Brotherhood and its military wing, al Qaeda. This all resulted in the barbaric death of an American Ambassador and three others, something in which current candidate for President, Hillary Clinton, played an enormous role. Now Libya is becoming the African foothold for the new Islamic Caliphate, the Islamic State. Libya is one of the nations mentioned by the prophet Ezekiel as coming against Israel in a colossal end time battle. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that US military sources are perplexed on how to stop the IS juggernaut.

WSJ reports: "Islamic State leaders in Syria have sent money, trainers and fighters to Libya in increasing numbers, raising new concerns for the US that the militant group is gaining traction in its attempts to broaden its reach and expand its influence. In recent months, US military officials said, Islamic State has solidified its foothold in Libya as it searches for ways to capitalize on rising popularity among extremist groups around the world...US military officials see few good options for halting Islamic State's growth in Libya." WSJ quoted a US military official saying, "How do we stop it?"It's a huge concern." The concern is that IS will use Libya as a base to expand operations globally.

Meanwhile, another region that would be involved in the Ezekiel-prophesied battle is that of the former Assyrian Empire in what today stands in parts of Turkey and Iraq. The IS has taken the Iraqi city of Ramadi, a heavily contested trade crossroads that leads to Jordan and on to the Mediterranean Sea. While this conquest is not mentioned in Ezekiel, it is indicative of the strength of the IS and its military organization. The IS is following the Muslim Brotherhood plan of connecting all the weaker Islamic jihadi forces into one powerful Caliphate. It appears to be building toward that end time coalition of nations mentioned in Ezekiel, even Turkey is supporting IS with logistics and infrastructure, while condemning it publicly.

In Ezekiel 38:3-8, the Lord says, "Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: and I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army...Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them...against the mountains of Israel..." These areas mentioned in the verses of Ezekiel 38 coincide with modern Turkey, Iran, Sudan, Libya, and parts of Iraq, even Saudi Arabia. The US "president's" foreign policy of supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in Arab Spring and beyond has accelerated the advance of the Islamic State and has allowed it to solidify as a major force pointing the world to the prophetic end times. Pray. Watch. Discern.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Netanyahu: We Will Keep Jerusalem Undivided

"We Will Forever Keep Jerusalem Unified . . ."

Netanyahu Vows and More, on Israel's Jubilant Jerusalem Day

"Jerusalem has been and will always be the capital city of the Jewish nation, and not of any other nation. This is where we have begun our path as a nation, this is our home and we are here to stay. Jerusalem will never again become a wounded and divided city; we will forever keep Jerusalem unified and under Israeli sovereignty." -Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

(Israel)-Tens of thousands of Israelis thronged the streets of Jerusalem on Sunday, celebrating Yom Yerushalayim, Jerusalem Day, marking the 48thanniversary of the unification of Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967. The eastern part of the city had been occupied by Jordan for 19 years.

The day was celebrated with parades, marches and street concerts played out throughout the city.

The official state ceremony took place at the Ammunition Hill site, a former Jordanian bunker where the IDF fought a crucial and courageous battle against Jordanian legionnaires.

President Reuven Rivlin spoke at the official Jerusalem Day ceremony at Ammunition Hill National Memorial Site. He lauded Jerusalem's development into "a state capital with bustling streets filled with young men and women, boys and girls."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of the "Islamic fanaticism" threat to Jerusalem, the Middle East and the entire world.

"Extremist Sunni and Shi'ites are fighting each other, but they have a common enemy-the West and the culture of freedom and progress that it represents, said Netanyahu. "Extremists cannot be allowed to achieve their aims, not in Iran, not in Yemen and not in Jerusalem."

Beyond that, "we have another eternal answer to terrorism-we will continue to develop the city, to build it, to make it a superpower in education and science, the center of the Torah. I pledge that as prime minister I will continue to develop the city. The city was united and will never be divided again."

"Jerusalem has been and will always be the capital city of the Jewish nation, and not of any other nation. This is where we have begun our path as a nation, this is our home and we are here to stay," he added. "Jerusalem will never again become a wounded and divided city; we will forever keep Jerusalem unified and under Israeli sovereignty."

35 Years Ago Today: Mount St. Helens' Deadly Eruption
-Could it Erupt Again Soon?

"We will know right away when there's some abnormal activity," -U.S.G.S.

(Seattle, WA)-It was the morning of May 18th, 1980, when the most active volcano in the Cascade Mountain Range of the Pacific Northwest, shot a plume of volcanic ash more than 80,000 feet in the air, after a 5.1 earthquake and landslide which preceded the historic eruption.

About 230 square miles of forest land were "scorched and flattened" in the lateral and vertical volcanic blasts, and the ash cloud reportedly encircled the entire globe in the next 15 days.

According to History.com, the eruption continued for 9 hours and the force was said to have been 500 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. It triggered the largest debris-avalanche in history.

The eruption killed 57 people, including 83-year-old resident Harry R. Truman, who refused to evacuate, saying, "If the mountain goes, I'm going with it."

Thirty-five years later, Mt. St. Helens is still considered to be "active," however, it is no longer erupting, according to the US Geological Survey. "We will know right away when there's some abnormal activity," assured U.S.G.S.' Carolyn Driedger.
Meanwhile the landscape, left eerie and barren by the volcano, continues to recover as a large array of plants, fish and wildlife have "returned and rebounded" in the area.

Report from Herrnhut, Germany

Report from Herrnhut, Germany

- praying for His restoration and revival!

(Submitted on Monday, May 18th)

"But the Lord said to me, 'Do not say, "I am only a child." . . . Now I have put my words in your mouth. See today, I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant." (Jeremiah 1:7, 10)

"When God gets ready to do a new thing with His people, He always sets them a-praying!" - J. Edwin Orr, scholar on the history of revivals

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thanks for your prayers of support for the Arab Europe prayer event which concluded strongly on Saturday. It was invigorating- with dynamic, Spirit-filled worship and faith-inspired praying together for all the nations of Europe where these Arab immigrants are now living. They came to understand that they are not refugees but sent by the Lord to pray and work for His restoration and revival of this continent that in the past has so much blessed the world through its strong spiritual legacy and now needs to recover that legacy with the help of these on-fire immigrant believers. Pray with us that they will be able to start prayer groups in their towns and unite with the nationals so that they can continue the process of united intercession they began in Wiesbaden.

Yesterday, Berthold Becker, founder of Intercessors for Germany, and I were in Hernnhut meeting with the church that has begun 24/7 prayer, renewing the practice of the Moravians and Count Zinzendorf who founded this place in the 18th century. As we worshipped, I noticed lovely young children, entering into worship with joy, and some were dancing freely in the presence of the Lord in front of us. The pastor then asked us to pray fatherly blessings over the whole congregation. Berthold and I felt moved to pray that from this fabled place a new and great revival would flow out to Germany and Europe.
Later, we stood amongst the 6000 graves of Zinzendorf and the godly saints who prayed in "the Lord's watch" (the meaning of Hernnhut in German) from 1727 for 100 years. Out of only 600 people in this small village, they sent 300 missionaries to the ends of the earth. I was overcome with weeping as they told me about the children of that day who went out in the fields in the night and cried out to the Lord as adults in neighboring homes tried to get them to shut up. However, they were irrepressible and kept on praying! Along with three Hernnhutter women, one of whom is with YWAM, we prayed for the children of Germany and for the raising up of a new generation like this former one.
These same Moravian children who cried out to God in the fields at night later went out as the first Protestant missionaries, many of them never coming back to their homeland but laying their lives down for the Lord among the unreached peoples. Others returned and are buried here as well. The women who were guiding us showed us their graves and those of the great and godly Zinzendorf and his family. This humble noble was the benefactor of the much-persecuted Moravians, followers of Jan Hus, the great reformer from Prague, a Pentecostal charismatic Bible teacher who was burned at the stake for his ministry efforts to bring reform and encourage the study of Scripture. As a child, Zinzendorf was deeply influenced by Francke and Spener who were leaders of the German Pietist revival, as well as by his own godly grandmother with whom he spent some years in this same area of Saxony.
I felt the Lord stirring me that this ground still has powerful, earned spiritual authority, so that like Jeremiah was called to do, they could pray, speaking out things that the Spirit puts in their mouths for the revival and transformation of nations and it will happen. This struck me, especially after Berthold shared with them that in 1989 he was here in Hernnhut leading a prayer gathering with hundreds of intercessors who proclaimed the end of the Berlin Wall from this part of East Germany. It came down that very time as they were praying this! A young woman who now has 5 lovely children and was one of those guiding us around, told us that she had been there as a nine-year old girl and witnessed what Berthold described. "History belongs to the intercessors, who believe the future into being!"
Today, we go to Berlin along with Sam Hofmann, a YWAM leader and colleague in many past initiatives to meet with prayer leaders there and also to pray for the government of Germany that has become so politically correct as to say that "Islam belongs to Germany" and to adopt sex education for little children, including introducing them to homosexuality. I am filled with indignation and revulsion. It is the same in the USA, the same wicked, perverted agenda that some in our own government are seeking to introduce to our nation while much of our "Christian majority" is occupied with our own comfort and entertainment. May the Lord shake us all out of our sleepy, complacent state to pray and prophesy to unjust, corrupted power like Jeremiah did!

Thanks for your continuing prayers as the Lord leads you for His revival, restoration and transformation to come upon Europe and other "developed" nations that have lapsed into paganism from the light they once knew.

Blessings from Hernnhut, Germany,
John

Our Grandmothers' Songs

Songs Our Grandmothers Sang:

THERE IS A FOUNTAIN FILLED WITH BLOOD

""A fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity." (Zechariah 13:1)

Lyrics:
There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel's veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.

The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.
Washed all my sins away, washed all my sins away;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.

Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.
Be saved, to sin no more, be saved, to sin no more;
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.

E'er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
And shall be till I die, and shall be till I die;
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.

Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I'll sing Thy power to save,
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
Lies silent in the grave, lies silent in the grave;
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.

Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared, unworthy though I be,
For me a blood bought free reward, a golden harp for me!
'Tis strung and tuned for endless years, and formed by power divine,
To sound in God the Father's ears no other name but Thine.

Earthquakes on active Hawaii volcano could signal new eruption

HONOLULU - A series of earthquakes and shifting ground on the slopes of Kilauea have scientists wondering what will happen next at one of the world's most active volcanos.

A lake of lava near the summit of Kilauea on Hawaii's Big Island had risen to a record-high level after a recent explosion. But in the past few days, the pool of molten rock began sinking, and the surface of the lava lake fell nearly 500 feet.

Meanwhile, a rash of earthquakes rattled the volcano with as many as 20 to 25 quakes per hour, and scientists' tilt meters detected that the ground was deforming.

"Clearly the lava, by dropping out of sight, it has to be going somewhere," said Steven Brantley, deputy scientist in charge of Hawaiian Volcano Observatory of the U.S. Geological Survey. One possibility is that a new lava eruption could break through the surface of the mountain, Brantley said.
The flurry of earthquakes that peaked in intensity Friday have been rattling Kilauea's southwest rift zone, so it's possible that a new eruption could occur southwest of the Halemaumau Crater, or even in the crater itself, Brentley said. Or, the tilting, shifting ground could lead to nothing.

"We don't know what the outcome of this activity might be," Brantley said. "That is the challenge, is trying to interpret what this activity really means in terms of the next step for Kilauea." (Fox News) Read more.

Jerusalem Celebrates 48 Years of Being an Undivided Capital

(Israel)-On Sunday, Israel celebrated 48 years since the reunification of Jerusalem during 1967's Six Day War. The day was declared a religious holiday by the Chief Rabbinate in recognition of the miracles that took place during the war.

In 1948, the Jordanians conquered the eastern part of Jerusalem, including its Old City, forcibly expelling its Jewish residents. For the next 19 years, Jews were denied access to the Western Wall (Kotel), one of the Jewish nation's most holy prayer sites. The Jordanians destroyed 48 of the 49 historic synagogues within the Old City and desecrated ancient graves located on the Mount of Olives by using them as latrines.

In 1967, Israeli paratroopers liberated the eastern half of the city, making their way to the Kotel at the base of the Temple Mount. Their experiences have inspired song and literature, and a photograph of forces standing at the Wall, taken mere hours later, is one of the city's most famous images.
