(I Corinthians 16:13,14)

The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" (Rev. 22:17)

Abide in Me . . .

Abide in Me . . .

"Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."
(Mark 6:31)

Saturday, January 16, 2016

A Thought for Today:

Find rest in Me alone, dear one; Your hope comes from Me. It skips and scampers about continually, rarely taking time to be still. Listen, and you will hear Me saying, "Come to Me."

I am the only resting place for your mind that will truly satisfy and strengthen you. Take time - make time - to direct your thoughts to Me. Whisper My Name and rest in My sacred Presence. You are on holy ground. This provides refreshment not only for your mind, but also for your soul.

A Verse for Today:

"Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him." (Psalm 62:5)

Join us tomorrow night as we abide together in His presence.

The Middle East in Focus

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you." (Isaiah 54:10)

GOD SENDS A SIGN OF LIFE IN THE SKIES OVER ISRAEL

Amazing. Above Israel, "Chai" shines -- the Hebrew symbol of life!

Please note:

Even though some of the headlines we bring you are naming "Palestine" as a state, in the Word of God there is no "Palestine." Rather, the correct terminology is "the West Bank" or "Judea and Samaria." The only state is the state of Israel.

Due to legal constraints, we are not allowed to change text we are forwarding to you. Thank you for hearing our heart in this critical matter.

1. Iran-backed jihadi group claims it's operating in West Bank, Jerusalem - Times of Israel

Palestinian jihadi group with close ties to Iran claimed on Wednesday that it has expanded out of the Gaza Strip and is now operating in the West Bank and Jerusalem as well.

"We have an armed branch whose goal it is to wage war on the Israeli occupation everywhere," Hisham Salim, founder of the Harakat al-Sabireen, told the Palestinian Ma'an news agency.

"Within this framework we have members in the West Bank and Jerusalem who will soon receive financial and military support from us," he said. (Read more)

2. Israeli Foreign Ministry Director: Expansionist Iran Wants to Turn Syria Into Iranian Province - Algemeiner

Iran wants to turn Syria into a province of Iran," said the director-general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Dore Gold, on Monday, according to Business Insider. Iran, said Gold, is "involved in creating a social and political change that incorporates Syria into the Iranian state."

And Iran's religious outreach to Syria is not just "a question of building Shi'ite mosques. It's a question of a permanent deployment against Israel from the north," he said, referring to the Iranian presence in the Syrian Golan Heights.

"That's something we cannot accept," he said, at a talk for the Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington, DC, according to Business Insider. (Read more)

3. Israel to bar Sweden from any role in future diplomatic process with Palestinians - Jerusalem Post

Sweden will not have any role to play in the Israeli-Palestinian diplomatic process as a result of Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom's hostility toward Israel, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

The statement came as the ministry announced that its deputy director-general for Western Europe, Aviv Shir-On, called in Swedish ambassador Carl Magnus Nesser to protest Wallstrom's comments.

The decision to summons Nesser was made by Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who directed Shir-On to protest not only the statements, but to register the government and the country's anger at what they see as Sweden's imbalance and hostile attitude toward Israel. (Read more)

4. "If UN positions on Syria border fall to radicals, Israel will have to respond' - Jerusalem Post

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force must retain control of its positions on Mount Hermon on the Syria-Israel border, since their capture by Sunni terrorist factions, or by elements from the radical Shi'ite axis, would form a "severe threat to IDF posts" in the area, a former senior military official warned.

In a paper published in recent days at the Institute for National Security Studies, where he is a senior research fellow, Brig.-Gen. (res.) Assaf Orion said the IDF would have to "respond accordingly" if UNDOF's border posts on Mount Hermon in Syria fall to radical elements.

Between 2010 and 2015, Orion headed the Strategic Division of the IDF's Planning Directorate, and had previously spent two decades in Military Intelligence's 8200 signal intelligence unit. (Read more)

5. Amid fighting in Sinai, Israel evacuates Gaza crossing - Times of Israel

Israel closed the Kerem Shalom border crossing into the Gaza Strip and pulled out operating crews on Thursday as the Egyptian Army engaged terrorist forces in the adjacent Sinai Peninsula.

Egyptian soldiers, backed with airstrikes, were reportedly operating in the area of Rafah, Sheikh Zuweid, and el-Arish which lie just seven kilometers (4.2 miles) from the Kerem Shalom gateway. Thirteen jihadis were killed in the fighting, reports said.

The IDF said it closed the crossing, through which goods are transported into the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, as a precautionary measure, and that there was no imminent security threat in the area. (Read more)

6. French Jews ask: Is wearing your faith a risk, or a right? - Times of Israel

PARIS (AP) - Religious Jews in Marseille are facing a wrenching choice: Whether to wear the skullcap that proclaims their religion or tuck it away in hopes of staying safe.

It's a dilemma about identity and freedom of faith that has confronted religious communities elsewhere in Europe and the US. It's becoming especially acute in France, from where a record number of Jews emigrated to Israel as it grapples with anti-Semitic violence increasingly inspired by the Islamic State group.

An attack this week was the last straw for the Marseille Jewish community's religious leadership: A machete-wielding 15-year-old slashed a Jewish teacher in the street. Under police questioning, the boy invoked IS. (Read more)

The Daily Brief

1. Report: Western European immigration to Israel hits unprecedented levels in 2015 - Jerusalem Post

Immigration from Western Europe to Israel hit all-time highs in 2015 as the perception that Jews feel threatened in the continent continues to grow, according to The Daily Mail Thursday.

Nearly 10,000 Jews, mostly from France, made aliya in 2015 after instances of anti-Semitic attacks reached record numbers.

According to The Daily Mail, while instances of anti-Semitic attacks have occurred in Belgium, Denmark and other European countries, Jews in France feel the most vulnerable to potential threats and dangers. (Read more)

- Lord, it saddens us to know that the level of anti-semitism has now increased to such a degree, that the Jews are feeling threatened and are now emigrating to Israel. But Lord God, we see Your redemptive purpose in this move, for Scripture is now being fulfilled. The time of the fulfillment of all things is at hand, including the return of the Jewish people to their homeland as they make aliyah. We praise You, Lord, in Your name, amen and amen.

- "The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the outcasts of Israel." (Psalm 147:2)

2. Dow Sinks 390 Points in Global Selloff, Crude Falls Nears $29 - Bloomberg

Stocks tumbled around the world, with U.S. equities sinking to their lowest levels since August, and bonds and gold jumped as oil's plunge below $30 sent markets reeling. Treasuries extended gains as economic data and earnings added to concern that global growth is faltering. (Read more)

- Lord God, in times of stress, You, Tender Shepherd, would have us come to you as little children. Father, we do not look at the figures on Wall Street as the source of our anchor and our strength . . . we look to You. For those who have invested in these markets, we ask Your wisdom, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." (Psalm 20:7)

3. Wal-Mart to shutter 269 stores, 154 of them in the US - CNSNews.com

Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores, more than half of them in the U.S. and another big chunk in its challenging Brazilian market. The stores being shuttered account for a fraction of the company's 11,000 stores worldwide and less than 1 percent of its global revenue. More than 95 percent of the stores set to be closed in the U.S. are within 10 miles of another Wal-Mart. The Bentonville, Arkansas, company said it is working to ensure that workers are placed in nearby locations. The store closures will start at the end of the month. (Read more)

- Lord, at first glance, this headline seems to be disastrous, not only for Wal-Mart, but also for its 10,000 employees who will now lose their jobs. But Lord God, upon closer inspection, this change is merely a "drop in the bucket" compared to the overall picture of the strength of Wal-Mart's business. We thank You that senior management has promised to help these employees to find other work, and we ask Your guidance as they attempt to do so. We thank You for hearing our prayers, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:19 NLT)

4. Growing number of police chiefs, sheriffs join call to arms - Fox News

It's Florida Sheriff Grady Judd's duty to protect the citizens of Polk County -- but he figures it's their job, too.

One of a growing number of rural and big-city law enforcement officials who openly encourages responsible gun ownership, Judd believes guns allow citizens to defend themselves when police cannot.

"If you are foolish enough to break into someone's home, you can expect to be shot in Polk County," Judd said in a statement after a homeowner shot a would-be home invader earlier this month. "It's more important to have a gun in your hand than a cop on the phone."

Such full-throated embrace of the Second Amendment as a crime-fighting tool isn't confined to red states like Florida. . . (Read more)

- We thank You, Lord, for the courage of these sheriffs and police chiefs who must protect the safety of our citizens. Lord God, they see the wisdom in allowing our people to retain the right to bear arms, for our own protection as well. We continue to lift up the Blood of the Lamb over our Second Amendment, and we thank you for our Constitution, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- And He said to them, "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one." (Luke 22:36)

Then the LORD said to me, "You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it." (Jer. 1:12)

5. Hostages taken after gunfire erupts near hotel in Burkina Faso capital, police say - Fox News

Suspected Islamist fighters held hostages Friday after storming an upscale Burkina Faso hotel used by foreigners, witnesses and police in the country's capital told Reuters.

There was no immediate official word on casualties, but Agence France Presse reported 20 dead, citing Robert Sangare a local hospital chief.

The number of hostages taken was also unknown.

Witnesses in Ouagadougou said gunfire and explosions erupted nearby as four or five militants stormed the four-story Splendid Hotel in the city center.

"It is continuing at this time. We are trying to know how many attackers they are to better coordinate our actions. Hostages have been taken. The operation could take several hours," a senior gendarmes official told Reuters.(Read more)

- Lord God, ISIS violence is now erupting on every continent on the earth . . . which tells us that You are about to arrive on the scene. Lord God, help us to keep looking up and to not walk in fear as these alerts keep pouring through the news. Once again, we ask that you comfort the families of those who have lost loves ones in this latest tragedy, and if they do not know You as Savior, that they would be drawn to Your love and Your'embrace at this time. Help us, O Lord, we pray, amen and amen.

- "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)

6. Jakarta Attack Raises Fears of ISIS' Spread in Southeast Asia - NY Times

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a terrorist attack in the Indonesian capital on Thursday, raising the specter of an expanded presence by the group in Southeast Asia.

The Syrian civil war has been a source of inspiration for violent Islamists in Indonesia, and hundreds have traveled to Syria to join the Islamic State over the past several years. But recently they appear to have sought targets closer to home. Extremists claiming to represent the Islamic State carried out small-scale attacks in Indonesia and the Philippines last year.

"In the last six months, we've seen a spike of planning for violence in Indonesia," said Sidney Jones, a terrorism expert and the director of the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict in Jakarta. "It's a desire to prove that jihadi groups are still alive and well in Indonesia and are committed to carrying out the ISIS agenda." (Read more)

- Father, we pray You bring to light all locations where ISIS has spread. Give us plans to stop them before they attack. We speak confusion to their camp, and pray You scatter them and break up their organization.

"The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD drives you." (Deuteronomy 4:27)

7. Officials: China will join the war against ISIS - israelnationalnews.com

Defense officials revealed on Wednesday that China's military will likely dispatch troops to take part in the global campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

China is worried about a growing trend among the Uyghur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of western China, which has increasingly become a hotbed of support for ISIS. The Turkish army announced last month that of the 913 ISIS terrorists captured illegally crossing the border with Syria since January 2015, the vast majority have been Chinese Muslims.

"The real question is whose side will they be on," one defense official familiar with internal Chinese discussions on the matter told the Washington Times, regarding China's intentions to take part in the campaign against ISIS.

According to the officials, China will likely join in Russia's airstrike campaign against ISIS which began last September, as opposed to joining the US-led international coalition fighting ISIS. The Russian strikes have also hit Western-backed rebels, sparking tensions. (Read more)

- Father, for those of us who know Your Word, this is alarming news. As the "kings of the north" (Russia) join forces with the "kings of the east" (China) and begin marching towards Syria, they will be taking a position on the border of Israel at the Golan Heights. The time of Your coming must surely be at hand, for there is very little of Your Word that must be fulfilled before we are caught up to join You in the air.

Lord God, as Russia and China join forces at that border, we ask that Your Mighty Hand of Protection would rest, once again, upon Your beloved land and its people . . . Israel. In the name of Yeshua we pray, amen.

- "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled." (Luke 21:32)

8. Pentagon lays out plan to take back Mosul, Raqqa from ISIS - Washington Post

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Defense Secretary Ash Carter laid out broad plans Wednesday to defeat Islamic State militants and retake the group's key power centers in Iraq and Syria. And he announced that a special commando force has now arrived in Iraq. Speaking to troops from the 101st Airborne Division who will soon deploy to Iraq, Carter also said he would meet in Paris next week with his defense counterparts, mainly from Europe, and will challenge them to bring more capabilities to the fight.

He said he will be meeting with defense leaders from France, Australia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and "will not hesitate to engage and challenge" them to get them to do more. "Each of these nations has a significant stake in completing the destruction of this evil organization, and we must include all of the capabilities they can bring to the field," he said. (Read more)

- Father, give Defense Secretary Ash Carter successful strategic plans to defeat this enemy. Inform Ash Carter of the plans of the enemy before they happen. We do pray that the leaders from Europe will be determined to do more in the fight. In Jesus Name, amen.

- The king of Aram became very upset over this. He called his officers together and demanded, "Which of you is the traitor? Who has been informing the king of Israel of my plans?" (2 Kings 6:11)

9. Ebola virus: New case emerges in Sierra Leone - BBC

Sierra Leone officials have confirmed a death from Ebola, hours after the World Health Organization declared the latest West Africa outbreak over.

The country was declared free of the virus on 7 November, and the region as a whole was cleared when Liberia was pronounced Ebola-free on Thursday.

Tests on a person who died in northern Sierra Leone proved positive, an Ebola test centre spokesman told the BBC. The WHO has warned, however, that more flare-ups are expected.(Read more)

- O Lord, just when we thought this terrible disease was under control, we now see a new, potential outbreak. Lord God, we thank You, our Great Physician, for Your mercy. We ask Your help for those who must now combat this disease once again in Sierra Leone, and we place our trust in You, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD." (Jer. 17:7)

10. Alex strengthens into a hurricane, a rarity for winter in the Atlantic - CNN

It has been nearly four decades since a winter storm in the Atlantic earned a name, and the National Hurricane Center went a step further Thursday, upgrading Alex to a hurricane.

At 10 p.m. ET Thursday, Hurricane Alex packed sustained 80-mph winds as it spun some 275 miles (about 433 kilometers) south of Portugal's Azores islands, parts of which are under a hurricane warning. Earlier the storm had maximum winds of 85 mph.

Tropical storm force winds already were reported in the eastern Azores, where it was early Friday morning. Alex's strength is surprising, because tropical storms thrive most over warm waters, something that's unexpected in the North Atlantic in the middle of winter. The water was indeed cool -- about 68 degrees Fahrenheit -- but the air was super cold at minus 76 degrees and the 144-degree difference helped give the storm enough energy to be a hurricane, CNN Severe Weather Expert Chad Myers said.(Read more)

- Father, we pray Hurricane Alex will lose its strength. We speak protection over Portugal's Azores islands. In Jesus Name, amen.

- "And awaking up he rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Silence; be mute. And the wind fell, and there was a great calm." (Mark 4:39)

Jewish European exodus may be prophetic signal

The Jewish Agency, a nonprofit group that serves as the main link between the Jewish State and Jewish communities around the world, told Associated Press that Jews are leaving Europe in record numbers because of anti-Semitic attacks. The organization told AP that "9,880 western European Jews immigrated to Israel in 2015 - the highest annual number ever. The figure is more than 10 percent over the previous year and over double the 2013 level. The vast majority, close to 8,000, came from France, where a rise in anti-Semitic attacks has shattered the sense of security of the world's third-largest Jewish population." This hostile environment created by Islamic immigration to Europe may be prophetic.

Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky is quoted saying, "That a record number of European Jews feel that Europe is no longer their home should alarm European leaders and serve as a wake-up call for all who are concerned about the future of Europe. At the same time, the fact that Israel has become the number one destination for European Jews seeking to build a better future elsewhere is a tribute to the appeal of life in Israel and the values the Jewish state represents." AP says Jews have been targeted in Belgium, Denmark and other European countries, but France has seen the worst of it. Jews have increasingly reported assaults and intimidation, mostly from Muslim extremists."

AP reports, "France's Jewish community of some 500,000 is the largest in Europe. Jewish schools and synagogues are often surrounded by soldiers in combat fatigues who patrol the streets with automatic rifles. Though Jews make up less than 1 percent of the population, French officials say more than 50 percent of all reported racist attacks in 2014 were directed against them. Concerns about anti-Semitism in France had already been high, but 2014 saw a record number of French Jews immigrate to Israel. That figure was easily eclipsed in 2015, prompting French authorities to warn about a steeper decline and saying a future France without Jews would "no longer be France.""

France may no longer be France anyway. According to muslimpopulation.com, in Western Europe, the percentage of the Muslim population is the largest in France, at 9.6% (64 million). French Jews know this better than anyone. This phenomena is causing European Jews to flock to Israel in record numbers. Several prophets of the Bible, including Isaiah, Ezekiel, Zechariah and others, prophesied that the Lord would gather God's people to their homeland in the time of the end. For example, Isaiah 11:12 says, "And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth." As the layers of prophecy unfold, the current record exodus of Jews from Europe to Israel may be a significant beginning.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Brother of Slain Christian Cabinet Member Continues Fight Against Notorious Blasphemy Laws

ROME - Paul Bhatti, a Roman Catholic, worked as a surgeon in his home country of Pakistan and in Europe, while his brother, Shahbaz, went into politics and became Pakistan's only Christian Cabinet member as the country's first minister of minority affairs.

Then, on March 2, 2011, Shahbaz was cut down in a hail of bullets in an attack by a militant group that called him "a blasphemer."

"My life and profession changed after the assassination of my brother," Paul Bhatti said in an interview with RNS.

"That was a situation I never expected to be in," he added calmly. "I was not aspiring to be a politician, but it happened. I think God's ways are different, and it happened." (Washington Post) Read more.

WONDERFUL PEACE

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27)

Lyrics

1 Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight
Rolls a melody sweeter than psalm;
In celestial-like strains it unceasingly falls
O'er my soul like an infinite calm.

Refrain:

Peace! peace! wonderful peace,
Coming down from the Father above;
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray,
In fathomless billows of love.

2 What a treasure I have in this wonderful peace,
Buried deep in the heart of my soul;
So secure that no power can mine it away,
While the years of eternity roll. [Refrain]

3 I am resting tonight in this wonderful peace,
Resting sweetly in Jesus' control;
For I'm kept from all danger by night and by day,
And His glory is flooding my soul. [Refrain]

4 And I know when I rise to that city of peace,
Where the Author of peace I shall see,
That one strain of the anthems the ransomed will sing,
In that heavenly kingdom shall be: [Refrain]

5 O soul, are you here without comfort or rest,
Walking down the rough pathway of time?
Make Jesus your friend ere the shadows grow dark;
O accept this sweet peace so sublime. [Refrain]

Most Powerful Supernova Ever Discovered Blasts Away Competition

A blazing-bright object appears to be the most luminous supernova ever witnessed, and it's blowing the top off researchers' models of how such explosions are powered.

When certain stars reach the end of their fuel supply, or gain a sudden influx of new material, they explode into a brilliant last stand called a supernova. This new object appears to be 200 times more powerful than the most commonly found type of supernova, likely belonging to a rare class of "super-luminous supernovas."

The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) searches for changing spots of light in the sky, and caught the glowing feature when it brightened in June. The researchers announced on Thursday that the bright spot is 3.8 billion light-years from Earth, in the sky at the border of the southern constellations Indus and Tucana.

It can't be seen with the naked eye at this distance - but if this object were 8.6 light-years away like Sirius, the brightest star in Earth's sky, it would appear to shine as brightly as the sun, researchers said. Their research was published Thursday in Science.

All told, the object put out about 570 billion times more light than the sun at its peak, and has more than twice the luminosity of the next-most-powerful supernova ever found. (When researchers say "most powerful" here, it's referring to the total radiation blasting out into space.)

Identifying the supernova was only the beginning of the mystery. The researchers are also exploring what could be powering the massive explosion. . . (NBC News) Read more here.

The fast ends on February 25, the national Collegiate Day of Prayer. The prayer circle meets Thursdays, 5 PM at the Overseas Students Mission headquarters on Ivy Road, Charlottesville, and also at UVA and other campuses.
Annual prayer reunions have been held ever since on many campuses. Student-led campus prayer movements were revived during the Jesus People revivals in the last century and are now led by a broad coalition of campus ministries including IVCF, the Luke 18 Project and groups like the International House of Prayer.
During the presidential election year and as a result of global terrorism, many are joining the student prayer movement. Fasting is increasingly important this year. Millions of additional Christians are expected to join in the national prayer movement as Lent begins on February 10, 2016. Christians in the larger community can sponsor campus prayer movements and adopt a campus at www.collegiatedayofprayer.org and jointhefast@collegiatejesusfast.com.
