(Psalm 85:6)

URGENT! Hezbollah members, including commander, killed in Israeli strike . . . war said to be unlikely . . . [See Middle East section, below, for details]

"And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse . . ." (Rev. 19:11)

The Daily Brief

1. Obama to appoint a "Designated Survivor" during Tuesday night's address - Wikipedia

Obama to appoint a "Designated Survivor" during Tuesday night's address - Wikipedia A designated survivor (or designated successor) is a member of the United States Cabinet who is appointed to be at a physically distant, secure, and undisclosed location when the President and the country's other top leaders (e.g., Vice President and Cabinet members) are gathered at a single location, such as during State of the Union addresses and presidential inaugurations. This is intended to maintain continuity of government in the event of a catastrophic occurrence which kills many officials in the presidential line of succession. Were such an event to occur, killing both the President and Vice President, the surviving official highest in the line, possibly the designated survivor, would become the Acting President of the United States under the Presidential Succession Act. (Read more)

- Sometime later today, the media will announce the name of the Cabinet member who will not be present in the Capitol Building tonight for the State of the Union address. Please cover that member in prayer, as well as all members present inside the Capitol, too. Capitol Hill will be a "no-fly zone," as well. Pray that all security measures will function to their maximum level of effectiveness; pray for protection over Capitol Hill tonight. In Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection." (Psalm 91:4)

2. Ernst to deliver GOP response to State of the Union - The Hill

Freshman Sen. Joni Ernst (Iowa) will deliver the Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union address next week. "I am truly humbled and honored to have this opportunity to deliver the Republican address. It is a long way from Red Oak to Washington, DC," she said. "Growing up on a southwest Iowa farm years ago I never, never would have imagined that I would have this opportunity." She said voters sent her to the nation's capital with a mission to "craft and implement good policies, good solutions which will enable to get America on a better path." (Read more)

- Lord God, we thank You that the Republican Party has chosen a new voice out of the heartland of our nation to state their own position after the State of the Union address tonight. We ask for Your hand of protection and blessing to rest upon Senator Ernst as she delivers her own address, and for Your wisdom to guide her as she prepares her remarks. Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayer, in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." (Psalm 32:8)

3. Obama to call for new tax increases in State of the Union address - Fox News

President Obama plans to call for billions in tax increases on top earners - including a hike in investment tax rates -- in order to fund new tax credits and other measures the White House claims will help the middle class. The president's proposals, which also include eliminating a tax break on inheritances, are likely to be cheered by the Democratic Party's liberal base when they are announced Tuesday night in his State of the Union address. However, the tax increases are all but certain to be non-starters with the new Republican majority on Capitol Hill. (Read more)

- Father, deliver us from tyranny! We ask You to block any tax increase on the people. We ask You to give clarity to this administration that they have to stop spending.

- "You will be secure under a government that is just and fair. Your enemies will stay far away. You will live in peace, and terror will not come near." (Isaiah 54:14 NLT)

4. Shots fired Saturday night near Biden's Delaware home - Fox News

Shots were fired Saturday night near Vice President Biden's home in Delaware, the Secret Service said Sunday. The agency said multiple shots were fired from a vehicle being driven on a public road outside the security perimeter of the Wilmington, Del.-area home. The vice president and wife Jill Biden were not home at the time of the incident.(Read more)

- Dear Lord, we ask that You would send both angelic and natural protection to surround the Vice President in light of this recent incident. We pray that the Secret Service would be alert to anything out of order in their surroundings. We pray that the Bidens, too, are looking to You for their safety.

- "My God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence." (2 Samuel 22:3)

5. Administration lawyers argue Hobby Lobby ruling on birth control doesn't apply to religious groups - Fox News

The Obama administration says faith-based nonprofits should comply with ObamaCare's birth-control mandate because they have more leeway than the corporations that won a Supreme Court ruling on the issue last year. Government attorneys made the argument on Thursday to the Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, after pro-life ministry Priests for Life asked the court to reconsider a ruling it made last fall that requires religious nonprofits to object in writing to regulations that require employer health care plans to insure contraceptives, as reported by The Washington Times. (Read more)

- Father, we pray that the Hobby Lobby ruling will benefit all religious groups. Give wisdom and victory to overcome ObamaCare's birth-control mandate. We ask in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "But thanks [be] to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1Corinthians 15:57)

6. New Congress divided over Iran sanctions, Guantanamo Bay, ISIS in Syria - Fox News

Two top U.S. senators -- one Democrat, one Republican -- agreed Sunday about the urgent need to address the global terror threat and Iran's nuclear program, but disagreed on possible solutions and other issues, underscoring the reality that Washington remains as divided as ever. (Read more)

Father, we pray for this Congress to come into agreement over these important issues. Decisions need to be made quickly regarding Iran, ISIS, and Guantanamo Bay. We ask You to bring forth a plan that both sides can agree on.

- "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" (Amos 3:3)

7. House Votes to Roll Back Obama's Immigration Order - Western Journalism

According to breaking reports Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed a resolution overturning Barack Obama's executive action granting deferred deportation for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who arrived in the country as children. The amendment was included in a larger bill aimed at funding the Department of Homeland Security through the remainder of the year.

The bill is now set to be presented for a Senate vote, where supporters will face an uphill battle for passage. Even with a majority in the new session, the 54 Senate Republicans would need the help of at least six Democrats to pass the bill. (Read more)

- Lord God, once again we thank You for this victory last week, demonstrating the fact that the president cannot simply do as he pleases by means of an "executive action," but instead must be held accountable to congressional authority. We ask for the same victory now as this bill reaches the Senate floor, and we ask for a veto-proof majority to "hold the line" against this lawless deed. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "Let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end . . . "{Psalm 7:9)

8. Visa waivers could help terrorists enter US - Stars and Stripes

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson acknowledged concerns Friday that terrorists might use the visa waiver program to enter the United States . . . But he noted that some of those countries also have citizens or legal residents who have left to fight or train with terrorist groups . . . The concern is that those fighters will return to their home countries and from there travel to the U.S. (Read more)

- Lord God, every time a terrorist tries to implement a scheme to bypass security, You are there. We ask You to quicken to Jeh Johnson and all other agents within the Department of Homeland Security to see and discern these wicked plots before they can bring destruction to our land. We ask that Your wisdom would guide these government officials, that they can then close these loopholes in our security and keep us safe. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me. Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name." (Psalm 18:48,49)

9. Israeli intelligence says it has arrested first known local Islamic State cell - Fox News

Israel's Shin Bet security service says it arrested the first known Islamic State cell operating inside the country. The intelligence agency said Sunday that the seven cell members belong to the country's Arab minority. It said they were caught just before executing an attack and were practicing on animals how to behead people. (Read more)

- How wonderful, Lord, to hear that the Israelis have apprehended this cell before their wicked work could be done. We ask for You to give the Israeli intelligence services supernatural information on all wickedness being planned ahead of time so that they may save lives and property. Put a hedge of protection around this tiny country surrounded by those who hate them. We ask this prayer in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent," (Isaiah 62:6)

10. Europe plunged into energy crisis as Russia cuts off gas supply via Ukraine - Daily Mail UK

Russia cut gas exports to Europe by 60 per cent today, plunging the continent into an energy crisis 'within hours' as a dispute with Ukraine escalated.

This morning, gas companies in Ukraine said that Russia had completely cut off their supply.

Six countries reported a complete shut-off of Russian gas shipped via Ukraine today, in a sharp escalation of a struggle over energy that threatens Europe as winter sets in.

Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and Turkey all reported a halt in gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine. Croatia said it was temporarily reducing supplies to industrial customers while Bulgaria said it had enough gas for only 'for a few days' and was in a 'crisis situation'.

The European Union in Brussels called the sudden cut-off to some of its member countries 'completely unacceptable'. (Read more)

- Oh Lord, we bind up, in the name of Jesus, this cruel and retaliatory action of the Russian bear! Lord, we pray with compassion for the whole continent to be able to stay warm and conduct life as usual. Touch this situation with Your mighty Hand to relieve the suffering that this action is causing now. Please show Russia that this is not the way to handle the disputes over the Ukraine. We pray for all of Europe to look to You for their needs at this time, and we ask this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.

- "Do not rejoice over me, my enemy; when I fall, I will arise; when I sit in darkness, the Lord will be a light to me." (Micah 7:8)

2. Muslims Burn French Flag On The Temple Mount - Jewish Press

Hundreds of Israeli and Palestinian Authority Muslims used the sacred Temple Mount Friday to burn the French flag in protest of the Charles Hebdo satirical magazine caricature this week of the Prophet Mohammed.

The cartoon depicts him crying over the murders of 12 people at the magazine's office and shows a banner proclaiming, "All is forgiven."

While Muslims in Jerusalem protested by burning the French flagon the Temple Mount, their brethren in Asia, Africa and Europe set fire to churches and raided shops run by Christians in Niger, attacked police n Algiers and Jordan, and burned the French flag in Pakistan.

It no longer is the "occupation" and the "Zionist enemy" that are the targets of angry Muslims. (Read more)

3. US Strongly Backs Israel over ICC Move to Probe Israel for War Crimes - Jewish Press

The U.S. State Dept. has strongly attacked the International Criminal Court (ICC) for opening a probe of alleged Israeli war comes and left open the question whether the ICC even has the a right to conduct a probe of last year's war with Hamas.

The State Dept. called the ICC announcement a "tragic irony," a statement that was further bolstered by praise for the ICC decision by Hamas, which may find itself under the ICC microscope.

Jeff Rathke, director of the State Dept. press office, stated: We strongly disagree with the ICC Prosecutor's action today. As we have said repeatedly, we do not believe that Palestine is a state and therefore we do not believe that it is eligible to join the ICC. It is a tragic irony that Israel, which has withstood thousands of terrorist rockets fired at its civilians and its neighborhoods, is now being scrutinized by the ICC. (Read more)

- Abba, we are thankful that the US State Department is backing Israel on this issue. We pray that this would be a sign of full future support of Israel and against any support of a Palestinian state. Father, we ask for protection for our government officials who publically speak out against the ICC in favor of Israel. We ask that You send angels to surround them and keep watch over them. May the enemy have not one inch to cause harm. We pray in the name of Yeshuah, amen.

4. URGENT! Hezbollah members, including commander, killed in Israeli strike - Jerusalem Post

Following the Palestinian bid to have Israeli officials convicted on war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court, Jerusalem sought international support in defunding the tribunal. Meanwhile, Israeli security agencies announced the arrest of seven residents of northern Israel on suspicion of forming an Islamic State cell with the aim of carrying out terrorist attacks in Israel. Top politicians from Japan and Canada visited, and the pre-election campaign continues to heat up.

An Israeli helicopter strike in the Syrian Golan Heights killed as many as ten Hezbollah and Iranian officials. Among the dead was Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of Imad Mughniyeh, a senior Hezbollah commander killed in Damascus in 2008. Jihad Mughniyeh had been serving as the Shi'ite terrorist group's Golan District commander, and was reportedly plotting attacks against Israel. The Times of Israel liveblogged developments through Sunday. (Read more)

5. War unlikely, but some Hezbollah response certain, experts say after strike -Times of Israel

On February 16, 1992 an Israeli Apache helicopter tracked the car of Hezbollah leader Abbas Moussawi and released a missile, killing him, his wife, his son, and four other people. It was reportedly Israel's first assassination by helicopter.

The operation was not fully planned. It had begun as intelligence work and had morphed, hastily, into a targeted killing.

It is still unclear whether this is what happened in the town of Mazrat Amal near Quneitra Sunday, when an Israeli helicopter was said to have attacked a convoy of senior Iranian and Hezbollah leaders, killing the son of Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah's slain commander of military operations; Mohammed Issa, a Hezbollah commander responsible for the organization's operations in Syria and Iraq; and Ali Reza al-Tabatabai, an Iranian adviser to Hezbollah, among others, according to reports. 6. Japan PM Begins 3-Day Trip to Israel, Ramallah - Israel National News

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe flew into Tel Aviv on Sunday at the start of a three-day official visit to Israel and the areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority.

He flew in from Jordan to begin the final leg of a six-day tour of the Middle East aimed at promoting regional stability and peace as well as boosting economic ties.

In Israel, he will hold talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin on Monday before heading to Ramallah to meet Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas on Tuesday. (Read more)

7. Report: Hezbollah Nearing Bankruptcy - Israel National News

Lebanese terror group Hezbollah is on the verge of bankruptcy, according to a report in Newsweek.

The terror group's financial troubles are a fallout from the dramatic slide in the price of oil, the report claimed. Hezbollah receives most of its funding from Iran, but Tehran - which is losing tens of millions weekly because of the lower prices for what is virtually its sole export - has been forced to cut allocations to "special projects," like funding Hezbollah terrorism.(Read more)

- Heavenly Father, we pray for You to fully defund Hezbollah and all other terrorist organizations. We thank You that through this slide of oil prices, it may have an impact to weaken and break down terrorists. We also pray for Your continued provision for Americans who are affected by the lowering oil prices and may be facing job loss. In the name of Yeshuah we pray, amen.

8. Rivlin Calls on Abbas: Come to Jerusalem Instead of Going to ICC - Israel National News

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin on Sunday urged Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to renew peace talks instead of pursuing efforts at the International Criminal Court (ICC) or United Nations.

"There is no other way than direct negotiations. Unilateral steps will not solve the conflict, but just give more power to the extremists," Rivlin was quoted by AFP as having said during a visit by a delegation of U.S. senators headed by Republican John McCain.

"I call upon President Abbas: instead of going to The Hague or to the United Nations, come to Jerusalem. Come to talk directly to the Israeli government and people," Rivlin said. (Read more)

The scales of color and character

On August 28, 1963, Baptist minister Martin Luther King, Jr., stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC and proclaimed: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." This is a very Christian principle. In Acts 10, the Apostle Peter received a vision from the Lord that showed him "What God has cleansed, that call not thou common." This means what Peter said in Acts 10:34, "Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons." The fiery words used these days to describe leadership in government are often characterized as racist, when in effect they are born of truth.

Part of the problem is that many people believe that when criticism is aimed at people of a certain race or ethnicity that it indicates racism. Certainly, God only knows the heart of the person leveling the criticism. But before the race card is played, perhaps those hearing the criticism should investigate the veracity of the charges. Another Biblical principle is that "the truth shall make you free." Former President Bill Clinton grabbed some headlines years ago when he said that words have meaning and that we all need to mind our words when passionately arguing our positions. But then, he went on to imply that anyone disagreeing with the current regime was akin to the Oklahoma City bomber. Character matters, right?

Indeed, supporters of the president often characterize criticism as racism. Further, if one passionately disagrees with his agenda, it is not only racists, but also an act of sedition. And one step more, if one disagrees because of a belief that the leadership is ungodly, then you are considered a possible religious terrorist. Case in point: Time columnist Joe Klein on April 18th's, "The Chris Matthews Show" said that "sedition" is defined as "a revolt or an incitement to revolt against established authority." He then all but accused Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck of sedition. Klein further said that racism and fears about the economy were motivators of the criticism.

Truth is: Both of our most recent presidents reflect poorly on American Christians. Both George W Bush and the current "president" believe there is more than one way to heaven. Both pressured Israel to split its nation in two parts, giving land to proven terrorists. One took a hard public stand against abortion, but did nothing to stop government funding of Planned Parenthood. The other continues to open the floodgates of abortion and calls blessings onto Planned Parenthood. There are many other examples where America's leadership has been weighed in the balance and has been found wanting. Character has no color or political party. Our standards should reflect those of God, then so would our leadership.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Remembering Dr. King

Remembering Dr. King

Today is a federal holiday honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. President Obama is encouraging Americans to observe the day by performing acts of community service. I would like to add to that suggestion: Let's honor the man by remembering his cause and what inspired him.

I encourage you to read King's Letter from a Birmingham Jail. His words are a reminder that our great social movements, including the very founding of this nation, have been led by men and women of faith striving to make America "a shining city upon a hill."

Dr. King's cause was freedom and equality; his inspiration was the word of God and our Declaration of Independence. Yet the cultural and political left keeps trying to kick God out of the public square.

With a black man twice elected president, a black attorney general, a black Supreme Court justice, a black man representing the state of South Carolina in the United States Senate, it would seem there is much to celebrate this Martin Luther King Day.

Unfortunately, a recent Rasmussen poll found that only 17% of Americans believe race relations in America today are "good or excellent," down from 34% a year ago. Sadly, our country has missed a tremendous opportunity in the past six years. (Gary Bauer)

Traditional Marriage at the Supreme Court (I)

At Last: Time for the Supreme Court to Uphold the Freedom of the People
to Uphold Natural Marriage

Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins released the following statement after the announcement this afternoon by the U.S. Supreme Court that it would hear an appeal of a ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. This ruling upheld the freedom of voters to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Commenting, Perkins said:

"The U.S. Supreme Court now has the opportunity to issue a long-overdue ruling to restore the freedom of the people to uphold marriage in their state laws as the union of a man and a woman. Lower court judges have robbed millions of people of their voice and vote on society's most fundamental relationship - marriage. "There is nothing in the Constitution that empowers the courts to silence the people and impose a nationwide redefinition of marriage.

"Voters in thirty states have adopted, by referendum, state constitutional amendments to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. In exercising their right to vote, they sent a message that that they want to see society rebuild and strengthen marriage - not have it redefined by unelected judges. At present, courts have overturned the peoples' votes on marriage in 20 states. This is unacceptable in a nation that prides itself on being a place where the people rule.

"The union between one man and one woman will continue to be uniquely important to society because it is timeless and universal. This is a discussion that now has made its way to the nation's highest court, whose ruling will speak loudly to whether self-government still matters in a country claiming that 'We, the People' rule," concluded Perkins.

Traditional Marriage at the Supreme Court (2)

Will Supremes Redefine Marriage?

The Supreme Court announced Friday afternoon that it will hear cases this term challenging state constitutional amendments defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. I must confess, my friends, that I have little confidence that the court will do the right thing.

Two years ago, the justices debated the issue of same-sex "marriage," and essentially punted. They ruled that the federal government had to recognize same-sex marriages in states that legalized it, but they stopped short of declaring same-sex marriage to be a fundamental right that every state had to recognize.

However, lower federal courts didn't see it that way. Left-wing judges took the 2013 Windsor decision as a green light to strike down state marriage protection amendments. But two federal courts bucked the trend and upheld the right of the people to define marriage in their states. Now the Supreme Court is stepping in to decide the issue.

Some hold out hope that Justice Anthony Kennedy may be persuaded to leave the regulation of marriage, including its definition, to the states. That would be a huge victory.

While trying to predict how the justices will rule is a tricky business, past behavior is often the best predictor of future behavior. And Justice Kennedy's past opinions in Romer, Lawrence and Windsor give me little hope he will restrain himself this time.

It seems far more likely that the majority that prevailed in Windsor will prevail once again, to the detriment of the family, religious liberty and our representative democracy. Millions of Americans who voted to preserve the normal meaning of marriage in their states will be told that they are bigots, that their values are irrational and that their votes do not matter. That will be a sad day indeed for a nation founded on the principle of ordered liberty under God. (Gary Bauer)

Turkey and Al Qaeda

Turkey caught smuggling weapons to al-Qaida

Turkish intelligence, under the apparent direction of then Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, allegedly has been authorizing the smuggling of arms to al-Qaida cells in Syria, according to informed Turkish sources.

The weapons, said to include rocket warheads, were allegedly smuggled in up to seven container trucks under the direction of Turkish Intelligence, or MIT, but were ordered halted by Aziz Takci, the public prosecutor for the southern Turkish city of Adana.

Takci, however, was subsequently removed from his post, and 13 of his soldiers involved in searching the trucks were charged in court with "espionage," a charge that can carry up to 20 years in prison.

Huseyin Celik, the deputy chairman of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, reportedly was adamant in claiming the trucks were from the MIT.

"What is inside [the trucks] doesn't concern anyone. Who are these prosecutors working for? Stopping MIT trucks means not knowing your limits," Celik said. "The prosecutors who make such mistakes will be held accountable."

. . . Turkey, a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has refused to join the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition, along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.

Turkey also continues to be a conduit for laundering money and providing fighters for ISIS and other jihadist radical groups fighting in Syria. (Read more)

Terror alerts throughout Europe

Terror alerts throughout Europe

Support for terrorism in the hundreds of millions

With terror alerts throughout Europe, Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, touches on how many Moslems support some form of Jihad today.

Based on the 2013 Pew study, as many as 351 million, of the world's 1.6 billion Moslem population, support Jihad in some form. Even if we considered that a high estimate, and removed 150 million, it still leaves a figure of 200 million people - a number that would be equal to the amount of those in the Axis countries who supported the Nazis in 1939 when they declared war on western civilization.

Icy roads cause hundreds of accidents
from Philly to New York and Connecticut

The mayor of Danbury, Connecticut, appears to be the first to give the Northeast's ice storm a hashtag: #Icezilla.

Mark Boughton tweeted updates to his constituents about the icy weather; some of them were enduring interruptions on the metro this weekend as freezing rain coated Connecticut and Pennsylvania and pelted New Jersey and New York.

[In Pennsylvania] Two people have died in accidents related to black ice in the Philadelphia area, state police said.

After crashing into at least 20 cars piled up on Interstate 76, one person was killed after getting out of a car and being hit by an oncoming vehicle, authorities said. Black ice coated Interstate 95 near the city, law enforcement told CNN, and there was an accident at every mile marker.

Pile-ups shut down parts of both interstates, a dispatcher said.

At least one person has died in Harford County, Maryland, said State Police spokesman Greg Shipley. Statewide, Shipley estimates that at least 100 car accidents have occurred. "The State Highway Administration is out in force salting" bridges, ramps and overpasses, he said. (CNN) Read more.
- Father, we ask that You hover over those who are in the midst of these dangerous ice storms. We ask Your wisdom to be released to those who must drive in these conditions. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen and amen.
