The Daily Brief - Wednesday, October 31, 2007

"This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24)

Today's Daily Brief -- "We report. You pray."

1. Peake Picked To Run Veterans Affairs - The Hill

Retired Lt. Gen. James Peake was nominated by President Bush Tuesday to run the Department of Veterans Affairs. Peake, a Vietnam veteran who was wounded twice in action, returned from the war to become a doctor. "As a medical officer and combat vet who was wounded in action, Dr. Peake understands the view from both sides of the hospital bed - the doctor's and the patient's," Bush said in introducing the nominee. The president noted that, if confirmed, Peake would be the first physician and the first general to serve as head of the VA.

· A human combination of a general and a physician to lead the Veterans Administration? Only You would pick this man to help our nation's retired military after their service to America! May Gen. Peake know that his nomination was known by You before he was born, and may he bring about a positive change in the military's attitude towards You. We pray that he will be confirmed, and that his administration will reflect Your Principles, with many being saved alive spiritually and physically during his tenure!

· "The righteousness of Your testimonies is everlasting; give me understanding, and I shall live." (Psalm 119: 144 NKJV)

2. Bush: Congress 'Not Getting Its Work Done' - AP

President Bush on Tuesday chided the Democratic- led Congress for not sending him any of the required annual spending bills needed to fund the federal government. He also charged that the leaders of the House and Senate instead "wasted valuable time" on political maneuvers.

· Lord God, may this Congress who stands for everything You oppose, be used to glorify You throughout the world! May our president continue to turn his heart toward You for wisdom and guidance in every part of his life!

· "But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive." (Genesis 50: 20 NKJV)

3. Analysis: 1 In 10 Schools 'Dropout Factories' - Fox News

It's a nickname no principal could be proud of: "Dropout Factory," a high school where no more than 60 percent of the students who start as freshmen make it to their senior year. That dubious distinction applies to more than one in 10 high schools across America.

· Abba, we cry out to You as our Daddy to ask You to please indwell our nation's schools for Your glory. May they no longer be a murderer's killing fields or a place to dump children during the workday! May the school boards, administrators, and teachers once again have a heart for You and their students. May all children be able to choose the schools that they would like to attend, and not be forced to enroll at inferior schools that have failed because of indifference towards You!

· "Whoever causes the upright to go astray in an evil way, he himself will fall into his own pit; but the blameless will inherit good." (Proverbs 28: 10 NKJV)

4. Egypt To Build Nuclear Plants - AP

Egypt's president, Hosni Mubarak, announced plans Monday to build several nuclear power plants -- the latest in a string of ambitious such proposals from moderate Arab countries. The United States immediately welcomed the plan, in a sharp contrast to what it called nuclear "cheating" by Iran.

· Dear Lord, only You know what the Egyptians plan to do with these nuclear power plants, and may it be for nuclear power only! President Mubarak has tried to be a friend to our country over the years in the most difficult of circumstances. May He come to know Your Son as his Savior, along with his wife Suzanne, his family and country! Reward and draw Egypt to You for providing refuge for Your son, Jesus as He escaped Herod! These dear people, along with Jordan, also yearn to be called Your Holy Land.

· "Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one's praise will come from God." (1 Corinthians 4: 5 NKJV)

5. U.S. Hands Over Karbala Province To Iraqi Forces - Bloomberg
..complete War Zone Diary - very graphic! An accurate report of what our men and women are fighting for and against in Irag ... for you.

Karbala province, scene of some of the worst sectarian attacks since the fall of Saddam Hussein, was handed over to Iraqi forces after the U.S. judged them ready to take responsibility for security in the Shiite Muslim area. · Dear Lord, we can't help but believe that You will work a great work in Iraq, and this land will eventually be set free for the spreading of Your Gospel. May many be saved alive in this country that has been home to both Abram and Nebuchadnezzar, men of faith each in their own way, but true believers in the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob! Please let the Iraqi army and police know that they need to call on You for help and You will be there to save!

· "The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17 NKJV)

6. Christian Broadcaster's Missionaries Survive Kidnapping In South Africa - TRW News
Doug and Madeleen Schumacher and children.
Two missionaries, Swaziland couple Doug and Madeleen Schumacher, working in South Africa for global Christian broadcaster Trans World Radio were recovering Friday, October 26, after they survived a kidnapping in South Africa "because of prayers." Witnesses sent e-mails to TWR staff and friends around the globe, "asking for prayer for the couple" while other TWR-Africa searched for their then-captive colleagues. TWR's Human Resources Director for Africa, Ray Alary, said the prayers worked. "The man who was holding them at gunpoint said to them, 'I was going to kill you, but you obviously have people praying for you and I am not going to kill you.

· Dear Lord, we humbly thank You for spaing the Schumacher's lives and truly personifying the verses from "Amazing Grace," "I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see." Thank You for the childlike faith of their friends who sent up fervent prayer to You asking for their release! May their captors and others come to know You as their Savior. Praise You for who You are, the Christ!

· "For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost." (Matthew 18: 11 NKJV)

7. Christian Groups Claim Pro-Atheist 'Stealth Campaign' in Nicole Kidman Fantasy Film 'The Golden Comp - Fox News

A children's fantasy film that stars Nicole Kidman and features a little girl on a quest to kill God has some Christian groups upset over what they believe is a ploy to promote atheism to kids.

· Offer praise that this movie, which will not be released until December, is being revealed now by Christian groups for its stealth agenda. May MANY be warned, take heed, and steer clear of this film -- protecting our children, too, from deception.

· "Go, set a watchman; let him proclaim what he seeth." (Isaiah 21:6)

8. Biggest Quake since '89 Hits Bay Area - CBN News

A magnitude-5.6 earthquake shook the San Francisco Bay area Tuesday night, rattling homes and nerves, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

· It is being reported that the epicenter of this quake struck at a church in San Jose, moving it off of its foundation. Might this be prophetic that the Spirit of our LORD GOD ALMIGHTY might be moving now, to move the "church" off any false foundation, and onto the Blood-washed Cross of Christ? May it be so, O Lord!

· "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone." (Psalm 118:22)

3. Palestinian opponents to Annapolis: We'll elect new president - Ynet News

Palestinian organizations in opposition to the Annapolis peace conference are weighing the possibility of electing a replacement body for the PLO in order to present an alternative to the leadership of current Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, a senior Palestinians official has told Ynet.

Today in Israel's History

Today is a big day for the Negev. There will be a huge celebration marking the 90th anniversary of a great victory in Beersheva. On October 31st, 1917, six hundred soldiers of the Australian 4th and 12th Light Horse Brigade, under the command of Brigadier General William Grant led a daring attack against the Ottoman army in Beersheva.

Armed with only horses and bayonets -- they charged the deeply entrenched Ottoman army. As machine guns fired, and men and horses were dying, the Lighthorsemen dug in their spurs and continued to press forward for victory. The bewildered enemy failed to adjust their sights and soon their gunfire was passing harmlessly overhead. Quickly, the lighthorsemen overran the Ottoman army and the battle was won in less than an hour. This is often described by historians as the last successful calvary charge in history.

Sometimes the battle around us seems overwhelming. We feel inadequately armed and too weak to attack. But with the Lord, we have the weapons we need and there will be victory!!! Not only that, the battle can be won quicker that we think! We need only press forward and put our trust in Him! A man with God at his side is an army undefeatable!

Let's be courageous as we press forward for the Kingdom today! There's so much work to be done!

CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!

"Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you." (Deut. 3:22)

REVERSE THE CURSE ON OCT. 31st!

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow marks another October 31st on all of our calendars, and we know what that means.

We recently received a note from one of our partners, Patty H., in Tucson, Arizona, addressing this topic, which we would like to share with all of you now. First Patty cites several verses of Scripture, including Leviticus 13:31, 20:6,27, Deut. 18:9-14.

"It is very clear what God has to say about this kind of thing. The celebration of the dead has it roots in paganism. What does light have to do with darkness? We, like the Israelites are to not take on the culture of the nation we find ourselves in. We are to be an example to the nations. We are to be lights in an ever darkening world leading culture to the Truth of Christ. Satan has always attempted to mix truth with error to diffuse the purity of God's Word.

The only thing I think we as believers need to do is preserve the purity of God's Word, the Gospel and present the Gospel. As many are out at that time, this would be a great opportunity to go to where many people congregate at, Malls, Movies and the like and give out good Gospel tracts, speaking with others about the Good News of Jesus Christ and Salvation."

Patty -- WE AGREE and together, we ask our Lord to REVERSE THE CURSE ON OCTOBER 31st!

..The devils fingerprints are all over our culture...

Let's take what Satan means for EVIL and turn it to GOOD!!

Here are some points for prayer and action:

1. Stand in repentance before our Lord for those who will dedicate tomorrow to the enemy. EVERY DAY BELONGS TO HIM -- INCLUDING OCTOBER 31ST!

2. Ask our Lord to forgive those who follow the traditional practices of this night, for they know not what they do. (Luke 23:34)

3. Pray and cry out for the souls of all who are ensnared by occult practices: witchcraft, sorcery, New Age teachings and others. Jesus came to set the captives free!!

4. BREAK ALL THE CURSES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DATE, ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF GOD. At the Cross, Jesus bore our curses for us, that we might be set free.

DECLARE THAT OCTOBER 31ST IS A DAY UNTO THE LORD! Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. (Gal. 3:13)

5. Pray for PROTECTION of all children who may be wandering the streets of our cities tomorrow, searching for candy and other "treats."

"He will give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all they ways." (Psalm 91:11)

6. Pray for all law enforcement officers. Ask our Lord to grace them with the ability to find and to arrest all child predators.

"Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known." (Mark 10:26)

7. Many, many churches hold alternative acitivities tomorrow night for neighborhood children. PRAY THAT THESE EFFORTS WOULD FIND GREAT SUCCESS, and that MANY would be drawn to "enter in" and join these planned Harvest parties -- for righteousness' sake.

He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." (Luke 10:2)

8. Finally, (repeating Patty's words, above) this would be a great opportunity to go to where many people congregate at, Malls, Movies and the like and give out good Gospel tracts, speaking with others about the Good News of Jesus Christ and Salvation.

"How will they hear without a preacher?" (Romans 10:14)

AND ALL GOD'S CHILDREN SAID:

AMEN!!

..This ... is the winning hand!

1. Waterboarding Issue Slows Down Mukasey's Appointment - AP

Attorney general nominee Michael Mukasey's evasive answers two weeks ago to Senate Judiciary Committee members about one controversial form of interrogation have so eroded support for his nomination that one committee member said Mukasey would fail a key vote unless he provided a better answer. Senate Judiciary Committee members on both sides of the aisle are anxiously awaiting Mukasey's answer to their questions about waterboarding, a form of interrogation in which a subject is made to believe he or she is drowning.

· Come against any obstructionist tactics in the confirmation of Mr. Mukasey to this vital post. Our God is a God of breakthrough; cry out to Him now for a breakthrough in this hearing and in this confirmation.

3. Much of U.S. Could See a Water Shortage - AP

An epic drought in Georgia threatens the water supply for millions. Florida doesn't have nearly enough water for its expected population boom. The Great Lakes are shrinking. Upstate New York's reservoirs have dropped to record lows. And in the West, the Sierra Nevada snowpack is melting faster each year.

· When we have come to the end of our rope, it is You Lord, that upholds us! We pray for Your people to intercede for the end of the droughts in our land and in our spirits! Let us be fruitful and fervent again!

· 'If disaster comes upon us--sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine--we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.' (2 Chronicles 20:9)

· We pray Lord that You will always give us Your wisdom about the things we need to do in order to protect our nation! We pray that we will be united in those things. Lead us and protect us, Oh, Lord!

· And it will be said in that day: "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation." (Isaiah 25:9)

5. Al-Qaida Presence "Reduced" in Baghdad - CBN News

The threat from al-Qaida in several former strongholds in Baghdad has been significantly reduced, but criminals who have established "almost mafia-like presence" in some areas pose a new threat, the top U.S. commander in Iraq said Sunday.

· We thank You, Lord for Your intervention and for answering our prayer to have the citizens of Iraq take more control for their security. Please keep them working to end the violence and faithful to the U.S. and to our troops!

· For You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat; for the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall. (Isaiah 25:4)

6. U.S. Military: Iranian-Made Rockets Hit Base Near Baghdad - Fox News

Rockets fired at a U.S. base southeast of Baghdad were manufactured in Iran, showing again that country's continued logistical support for insurgents inside Iraq, U.S. military officials said on Saturday.

· Heavenly Father, we pray that You will begin to raise up people in Iran that will turn against the plans of Ahmadinejad who has in his heart the annihilation of Israel and all the Jews! Protect them Lord as they do this!

· You will reduce the noise of aliens, as heat in a dry place; as heat in the shadow of a cloud, the song of the terrible ones will be diminished. (Isaiah 25:5)

7. Oil Sets Record, Surpassing $93 a Barrel - Washington Post

Oil prices surpassed $93 a barrel Monday in Asian trading to hit a new trading high amid concerns about political tensions in the Middle East and the weakening U.S. dollar.

· Lord, we submit the high oil prices, the political tensions in the Middle East, and the weakening of the U.S. dollar for You to fix. We humble ourselves in recognition that You alone are the one Who gives all we need! Hear us, Oh Lord!

· We will rejoice in Your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions . . . Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. (Psalms 20:5, 7)

1. Word of Olmert's Cancer Eases Israeli Political Tensions - NY Sun

With fast-approaching peace talks in America that are unpopular at home and several ongoing investigations into his conduct -- not to mention a near- rebellion in his own party and parliamentary no- confidence motions -- Prime Minister Olmert hardly needed more hardship. Yesterday's disclosure that he is suffering from prostate cancer, however, may have cured, at least temporarily, some of his political ailments.

5. IDF: Terrorists on the defensive - Ynet News

Gaza Division commander Brig.-Gen. Moshe Tamir said Monday that the IDF forces under his command are preventing terrorists from carrying out attacks on the Israeli side of the security fence and are forcing them to "be on the defensive".

Action Needed NOW on LOST!

Senate Foreign Relations Committee to Vote on LOST (Law of the Sea Treaty) TOMORROW!

LOST creates a commission to oversee the rights and access that all signatory countries have in regard to international waters: the International Seabed Authority. Those sitting on the board of the International Seabed Authority would decide which countries can gain access to which waters. Given the anti-American sentiment already prevalent at the United Nations, a second governing body would likely fare no better.

Ratification of this treaty would also subject the U.S. to a foreign tribunal with unaccountable, unelected judges. One can assume the court would not favorably judge U.S. interests such as military activity and business developments when it has expressed its dedication to giving preference to developing countries.

Furthermore, military and intelligence activity may also be subject to LOST and the International Seabed Authority. Military intelligence is necessary to protect U.S. borders and prevent terrorist attacks. Yet if the governing bodies of the treaty decide otherwise, U.S. military operations could be severely hindered. The convention is also designed to promote industry in developing countries by forcing developed countries to give them access to technology. Our military abilities would be compromised and freely given to developing, and potentially hostile countries that could then use our technologies against us.

Please call your Senators on the Foreign Relations Committee at 202-224-3121 and urge them to oppose LOST.

Wrong About Global Warming

In their desperation to seize control of our economy and our country, the Left has seized the issue of global warming and turned it into an existential threat to mankind. But, as usual, the Left is wrong about global warming, and all its hysterical rhetoric does not match the facts.

Recently, Senate Democrat Leader Harry Reid suggested that the California wildfires were connected to global warming. Well, we now know that arson likely played a bigger role, and Reid's remark was rebuked by scientists at the National Interagency Fire Center.

While Southern California is currently experiencing a drought, which is exacerbating the fires, "tree-ring records show there have been far drier periods during the last millennium," suggesting climate change patterns are cyclical and perhaps not so strongly linked to the burning of fossil fuels.

And do you recall that immediately after Hurricane Katrina, Al Gore and others predicted gloom and doom from more frequent and more powerful hurricanes caused by global warming? According to the Center for Ocean- Atmospheric Prediction Studies, "Unless a dramatic and historical flurry of activity occurs in the next 9 weeks, 2007 will rank as a historically inactive year for the Northern Hemisphere as a whole. During the past 30 years, only 1977 has had less activity." 2006 was also a below average hurricane season.

Remember, friends, 30 years ago the media were fretting about an impending ice age.

Dollar Slide, Oil Prices Show Consequences
Of Turning Away From God

Two records have been hit at the same time, neither good for America-oil topped out at a record $93.80 on the world markets and the U.S. dollar slid to record lows against major currencies. These economic realities will place a squeeze on the pocketbooks of middle class America as anything to do with oil- transportation, production, heating-will cost more, and with the dollar being valued at less, purchasing power will be weaker. In addition, gold prices are moving near 28 year highs. Gold is a hedge against inflation as well as a security that is used by investors when there is instability in the world.

The weakness in the dollar does have some good news-that U.S. exports are cheaper to purchase on the international markets. The "buying" of American goods and products could help to offset a weaker economy that is sure to come if oil and dollar value continue to move in opposite directions. The U.S. economy has grown handsomely in recent years, increasing the demand for oil, which now stands at nearly 21 million barrels a day. At the same time, environmentalist-led efforts have influenced Congress to prohibit oil exploration in the U.S. In fact, no new oil refineries have been built since 1976.

New federal rules requiring oil companies to add an ethanol additive to gasoline at the pump has raised the gasoline prices by 30 to 40 cents a gallon across the country. But the real factor in current pump prices is the cost of oil. And some 40% of the world's oil supply is controlled by the OPEC nations of Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. The Energy Information Administration reports that these 11 nations hold two-thirds of the world's oil reserves. In addition, Russia is the second largest oil exporter and holds the world's largest natural gas reserves, the second largest coal reserves, and the eighth largest oil reserves.

The countries holding the keys to oil prices are not friends of America. Due to its trade surplus with the United States, another enemy, China, holds over $1 trillion in surplus currency and has been suspected of dumping dollars on the foreign markets to boost the value of its own currency and buy cheaper American exports. The United States dependency on its enemies for oil and trade has seemed to place the country in an untenable position of risk to the citizens and to the national security. Psalm 33:12 says, "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." Leadership is a reflection of the nation. Electing wise and moral leaders is imperative to the survival of this nation going forward.

1. CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES STILL BURNING; BUSH DECLARES DISASTER AREA

President Bush moved quickly to respond to the massive dislocation and humanitarian crisis caused by the California wildfires, visiting the area and declaring it a Federal disaster area. The AP reports President Bush "promised Wednesday that Washington 'will do everything it can' to help Southern Californians fearing the worst from wildfires blazing through canyons and neighborhoods for a fourth straight day." (US News)

State officials say some 500,000 acres have burned since last Sunday, with 64 reported injuries (most of them firefighters) and twelve confirmed deaths. More than 2,000 homes were destroyed in the fires, among the worst in modern history; 12,000 firefighters are battling flames. 810 square miles burned, an area more than twice the size of New York City. In San Diego, evacuees are leaving QualComm Stadium, with many returning to communities where their homes have been damaged or destroyed. Meanwhile, on the fire lines, cool, damp weather helped firefighters gain the upper hand on Friday in their six-day-long struggle with wildfires across Southern California. No rain is expected in the next week . (USA Today, Reuters)

· Offer thanksgiving for the church buildings, family homes and businesses which have survived the fires. Pray for those that did not survive. Ask the Lord to provide Churches with places to meet until they rebuild or relocate. Pray for the thousands of people who lost everything - they are in need of food/clothing/shelter and cash. [Intercessors for America]

· "Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence." (Psalms 42:5)

· Pray, too, that any arsonists be found and brought to justice.

· "Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known." (Matt. 10:26)

2. MEET THE NEW SCHIP, SAME AS THE OLD SCHIP

The Democratic Leadership made another effort to expand socialized medicine yesterday, ignoring pleas to postpone a House vote on their child health insurance bill to accommodate Republican members dealing with the deadly fires in California. While the Democrats picked up a few votes, it appears the timing of the vote was coordinated with liberal groups like America Coming Together and MoveOn.org who plan to air new hit ads against members who voted against the new bill.

This collaboration exposes Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-Calif.) ploy to use partisan means to gain more power. The "new" bill itself is really not that much different from the previous bill, which President Bush vetoed. Speaker Pelosi's new SCHIP costs the same (a $35 billion expansion), allows for taxpayer-funded health care to those who can afford it and to people who aren't children, and is an obvious first step towards socialized medicine at the cost of private coverage. A new Congressional Budget Office analysis found that over two million people would leave private coverage and join this tax-funded system. (Family Research Council)

· The move to bring more and more socialism into this nation is gaining momentum, especially in this Congress. Actually, it is the role of the church to care for those who are sick and needy, and everyone wants to help the helpless. But do we want the federal government to tax us for that purpose? Pray for a law that serves those who are truly needy, a law that is drafted without deception, and leadership in Congress that is open in its intents. Continue to pray for President Bush to stand for truth.

· "He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good; and whoso that trusteth in the Lord, happy is he." (Proverbs 16:20)

3. IMMIGRATION DREAM ACT KILLED IN SENATE VOTE

Anti-amnesty forces predict Wednesday's Senate defeat of the DREAM Act won't prevent Democrats in Congress from introducing a slew of similar pro- immigration measures in coming months. The Senate vote of 52-44 fell eight votes short of the 60 required to invoke cloture and move the bill to a final vote. The action effectively kills the bill. DREAM ACT (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) is S. 2205. (NewsMax.com)

· Lord we thank You for this defeat, and ask that You will continue to block amnesty in any form. We pray that You will set the watchmen in Congress to see and block any further attempts to pass this type of legislation.

· "For they intended evil against thee; they imagined a mischievous device, which they were not able to perform." (Psalm 21:11)

4. VOTE ON ENDA POSTPONED "INDEFINITELY"

This week the House was scheduled to take up the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which covers sexual orientation discrimination in employment. However, a continuing dispute about whether the bill should cover "gender identify" (i.e. transgender) individuals in addition to sexual orientation has once again delayed the bill's progress. It is now postponed indefinitely. (Sources on the Hill)

· While we offer great PRAISE for this report, we remain on watch over ENDA. Continue to press in, in prayer, asking that this bill NOT be placed on the Rules Committee Calendar -- next week or ever again! Ask God to put an END to ENDA.

· "Thus far shall you come but no further, and here shall your proud waves be stopped!" (Job 38:11)

5. JUDGE LESLIE SOUTHWICK CONFIRMED BY U.S. SENATE

After 10 months waiting, Judge Leslie Southwick won confirmation from the U.S. Senate today to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, 59-38, following a 62-35 cloture vote. Southwick had been accused of racism, supporters say, not because of flaws in his distinguished career, but because of the history of the court, which serves Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Republicans and Democrats have fought over the seat for years, filled by President Bush's recess appointment of Judge Charles Pickering in 2004 after Democrats successfully blocked Pickering from a permanent seat. Another Bush nominee, Michael Wallace, withdrew after concluding that Democrats would not confirm him. There are still many qualified nominees that Senate Democrats are blocking. This year the Senate has confirmed only five Circuit Court nominees, compared to an average of seventeen during the same timeframe in other administrations. (FRC Prayer Alerts)

President Bush said following the vote: "The confirmation of Judge Leslie Southwick to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit is a victory for America's judicial system and for the citizens of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Today's bipartisan vote resolves a long-standing judicial emergency and will help ensure that the Fifth Circuit can operate more effectively. Judge Southwick is a man of character and intelligence who will apply the law fairly. I appreciate the Senate's approval of his nomination." (Christian Coalition of America)

· Praise God for this breakthrough. May God continue to work within our Senate to confirm upstanding candidates for the federal judiciary, and may the obstruction not be allowed to continue.

· "But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight,a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which THE LORD gave thee" (Deuteronomy 25:15)

6. SENATE COMMITTEE MAY APPROVE LOST TREATY NEXT WEEK

As Americans are beginning to wake up to the dangerous Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) supported by the internationalists in the United States Congress, and unfortunately, supported by many in the Bush Administration, these Americans are contacting their Senators to urge them to vote NO on this abominable LOST treaty. This is a treaty which President Ronald Reagan despised and ensured would not pass the United States Senate. The last Republican Senator Majority Leader, Bill Frist blocked LOST from even getting a vote in the Senate.

Republican opponents in the Senate, several of whom have derailed the treaty twice in the past, discount even the Bush administration's backing. On Wednesday, they blocked a preliminary ratification vote, and in doing so declared it an auspicious date for foes of international institutions. "There is no better time to celebrate the 62nd birthday of the United Nations than to say we don't want it," said Jim Inhofe, the Oklahoma Republican senator who leads an annual effort to withhold US funds from the UN.

The Senate foreign relations committee now is poised to approve the treaty next week, after which two- thirds of the full chamber must vote in favor to ensure ratification. Mr Bush has dispatched John Negroponte, the hawkish deputy secretary of state, and senior navy officials to help lobby Republicans. That may not be enough to overcome the Republicans' famous mistrust of the UN. Trent Lott of Mississippi, the Republicans' second in command in the Senate, said he has studied seafaring treaties since law school. His advice to the military: "Have a strong and robust navy so you're not going to have somebody tell you where you can't go."

When the treaty will come to a vote remains to be seen. The treaty would come to the floor with procedural privileges that prevent a filibuster, leaving conservatives little choice but to broadcast their warnings as loudly as possible. In 2004, then-majority leader Bill Frist refused to bring the treaty for a vote, but new Democratic majority leader Harry Reid is unlikely to do the same.

In the meantime, opposition to the Law of the Sea Treaty has picked up steam as the conservative base evaluates Republican presidential candidates. Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, and former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson have pointedly broken with Mr Bush on the treaty. "At a time when customary international law in this area has proven sufficient, I believe the efforts of treaty proponents would be better spent reforming the United Nations," Mr Thompson said yesterday. John McCain, the Arizona senator and decorated navy pilot, declined to answer a question about the treaty.

· For more information on the dangers of LOST to our national sovereignty, please visit The Heritage Foundation at this link. We urge all of our readers to not only PRAY that this treaty fails in the Senate, but also to TAKE ACTION on this issue. Call your own Senators and voice your opinions on LOST -- and please do this quickly! (Christian Coalition of America; The Guardian)

7. CHILD PORN LAW STRUCK DOWN: COURT CITES FREE SPEECH CONCERNS

A federal appeals court on Tuesday struck down as unconstitutional a law intended to fight child pornography, saying it restricts protected speech by setting reporting requirements that are overbroad. Producers of certain sexually explicit photographs are required to maintain extensive records regarding the individuals depicted, according to the Child Protection and Obscenity Enforcement Act of 1988, as amended by Congress. The problem with the law is that the term "producers" can refer to anyone who creates a visual representation of sexually explicit conduct through videotaping, photographing or computer manipulation, said a panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. The law makes no provision to exempt photographs not intended for a commercial purpose, or those never intended to be transferred.

The ruling is a "very, very significant victory for freedom of expression," said J. Michael Murray, which made the constitutional challenge on behalf of Connection Distributing Co. of Cleveland. He said it may bar government agents from entering publishing places and demanding to inspect photo records. Connection publishes a number of pornographic magazines. "We are disappointed in the court's ruling," said Justice Department spokesman Charles Miller. "The statute was enacted to protect those who are underage from being used as performers in sexually explicit media. We are currently reviewing the ruling and in the process of determining what the government's next step will be in this matter."

Child abuse is already illegal, the court noted. "Adult sexual conduct is not illegal and it is, in fact, constitutionally protected," the court said. The ruling reversed a judgment in favor of the government and sent the case back to U.S. District Court in Cleveland with instructions to find the statute overly broad and enter a judgment for Connection. (AP)

· Pray that these judges who think freedom of speech protects pornography, especially that explicitly using children, will be convicted in their minds and spirits. Pray for protection of children targeted for use in these photographs, films, etc., that God will divert attention from these children and place them "under His wing." Ask the Lord to give strategies to the Justice Department for drafting statutes that protect all of us from pornography and will receive His approval from the judges.

· "When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever." (Psalm 92:7)

8. BROWNBACK COMMENDS BUSH FOR STRONG STAND ON IRAN

U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today congratulated the Bush administration for its steps to fight Iranian- backed terrorism and called on the president and Congress to take additional actions. "I am pleased that the administration will treat the Qods Force as a terrorist organization and take strong steps against Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a whole," Brownback said. "This is a first and long-overdue step in ensuring Tehran pays a price for its sponsorship of terrorism." The Bush administration announced today the designation the Qods Force as a terrorist entity and the entire IRGC as proliferators of weapons of mass destruction. The move will allow the United States to financially isolate the IRGC and its supporters.

Brownback called on the administration to take additional steps against Iran because of its support for terrorism. "The administration should also announce its support for legislation that would help investors divest their assets from those entities that provide financial support to the Iranian regime. Congress should take up and pass such legislation immediately." In fact, in May, Senator Brownback (R- KA) and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) introduced the Iranian Sanctions Enabling Act, which would authorize state and local governments and institutional investors to do so.

Brownback also called for robust funding of Iran's pro- democracy movement. "Congress should match the administration's effort on Iran by providing full funding of programs to promote democracy in Iran. As we penalize the regime for supporting terrorists, we should send a clear signal of support to the Iranian people who struggle for a better future for their country." In July, the Senate passed an amendment introduced by Brownback and Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) which restored full funding for Iran democracy programs in the Foreign Operations bill. A conference committee is now ironing out differences between House and Senate versions of that legislation before it is sent to the president. Brownback is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee's Foreign Operations Subcommittee.

· Pray that Sen. Brownback's bills become law. Already the Bush administration has applied financial sanctions on Iran, sanctions that should bring change in Iran's plans. Continue to pray for the Iranian people who suffer under the radical Islamist leadership.

· "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy." (Psalm 107:2)

9. US UNILATERALLY SANCTIONS IRAN
LABELS MILITARY WING TERROR SUPPORTER

With UN sanctions on Iran bogging down, the United States is increasing its pressure on the Islamic regime to end its nuclear program, announcing its own sanctions on Thursday [October 25], according to the Washington Post. The decision labels the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the Quds Force, the Guard's foreign operations branch, as a supporter of terrorism. The WMD designation, which cited the Iranian ballistic missile program, means that the United States can freeze assets for the IRGC and its supporters. The move not only hinders the Iranian military's top wing, it also affects the Iranian economy, as the IRGC controls companies and plants that range from construction to pharmaceuticals. The Guard is also connected, according to US officials, to the acquisition of nuclear technology.

Besides taking punitive measures against a foreign military-an unprecedented move by the United States-the sanctions also call for the international community to shut down business with three Iranian banks. This could force foreign groups to stop doing business with Iran or else risk losing business with the United States. US Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. said the IRGC "is so deeply entrenched in Iran's economy, that it is increasingly likely that if you are doing business with Iran, you are doing business with the IRGC." The sanctions were also in response to US accusations that Iran is supporting terrorists in Iraq.

The moves follow recent statements to France's Le Monde newspaper by International Atomic Energy Agency Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei that called for diplomacy and sanctions, as he said Iran was three to eight years away from creating a nuclear bomb. The international powers have been divided on the Iranian issue. Russia and China have opposed US calls for tougher UN sanctions, while British Prime Minister Gordon Brown recently said he would push for additional sanctions. (Bridges for Peace)

· Pray that these new US sanctions will bring a halt to the Iranian nuclear program.

· "So you, son of man: I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; therefore you shall hear a word from My mouth and warn them for Me." (Ezekiel 33:7)

10. REPORT: FOUR NATIONS FLIRT WITH PROPHETIC DISASTER RE: JERUSALEM

The Bush Administration is leveling a new set of sanctions against Iran that will likely designate the Qods Force, an Iranian special forces unit that has infiltrated parts of Iraq and is responsible for killing American troops, as a sponsor of terrorism. In addition, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard will be designated as a group that seeks the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The Revolutionary Guard controls about 35 percent of Iran's economy, and the sanctions will tighten the grip on Iran's financial freedom. But at the heart of these events is the prophecy-laden city of Jerusalem and what it holds for the nations.

Security analyst DebkaFile reports, "Iranian sources recall that the Islamic regime announced in advance that approval of these measures would be deemed tantamount to an American declaration of war on Iran and call forth retaliation. Tehran would target U.S. interests in the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan or Israel by means of Special Groups, i.e. Iran's foreign intelligence networks, Hezbollah or Hamas." Iran operates through a secret terrorist coordinating committee called the Committee of Nine, which includes top level Iranian officials and al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and other major terrorist groups, as exposed by former Vice Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Curt Weldon.

The Bush sanctions are expected to hit over 1,000 companies throughout Europe and the Middle East. DebkaFile believes the sanctions will have a "crippling effect" on Iran's economy which is already hard hit by America's systematically blocking of Iran's financial dealings with international banks. This is all part of a complicated web of international danger between Iran, Russia, Syria and America that ultimately strikes at the heart of apocalyptic prophecies found in the Biblical books of Isaiah, Ezekiel and Zechariah, where Damascus, Syria will be destroyed, Israel will be attacked by Iran and Russia, and those who try to divide Jerusalem will face destruction.

Iran is operating an undeclared proxy war against U.S. soldiers in Iraq through the Qods Force and the Revolutionary Guard. Iran, as protected by Russia and in cooperation with Syria, is supporting Palestinian terrorist groups who want control of the holy city of Jerusalem. The Bush Administration's insistence that Jerusalem be divided between Israel and a future Palestinian state is flirting with prophetic disaster. These end time prophetic nations are interlocked in a deadly predestined struggle over control of Jerusalem. And as Zechariah 12:3 says, "And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces." (Bill Wilson, The Daily Jot, Oct. 25, 2007)

11. REPORT: BUSH AND RICE AT ODDS OVER ANNAPOLIS; SYRIA

For the first time since they began working together, President George W. Bush and his secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice are visibly divided on two major foreign policy issues, both related to Israel: The Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, which is still sans date, participants or agenda, and Israel's attack on the North Korean nuclear project in Syria on Sept. 6, which the president approved. As she feared, the resulting exposure of North Korea's proliferation activities stirred a hornets' nest against her bid to bring diplomacy on Pyongyang's nuclear program to a successful conclusion with signed US- North Korean contracts for its liquidation.

DEBKAfile's Washington sources disclose that this week Bush questioned Rice on the prospects of the Annapolis meeting. "Can you do it?" he asked. "I'm trying," she replied, thereby acknowledging it was far from being in the bag. The president was already skeptical, but he cooled further to the conference plan, those sources report, after listening to two American- Jewish delegations who visited the White House last week.

· Offer praise to the Lord for this report, for it shows that prayer and action is making a difference in the direction of U.S. policy towards pressuring Israel to give up her "land for peace." Continue in prayer that President Bush will hear the LORD in all matters relating to Israel, bringing not a curse upon our own nation, but a blessing, instead.

· "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes." (Prov. 21:1)

12. JERUSALEM CHURCH SET ABLAZE BY ARSONISTS

Late Tuesday night, October 23, arsonists set fire to a central Jerusalem church, causing damage to the main sanctuary. Located on Narkis Street and commonly known as the Baptist House, the church is currently home to some three congregations meeting there on different days throughout the week.

Police and fire services responded to the blaze, containing the fire before it could do serious damage to the structure. The arsonists entered the main sanctuary and placed flammable substances on chairs in three locations inside the room. As a result, several chairs were burned and the inside of the sanctuary suffered from smoke and soot damage, as well as water damage from the firefighters' hoses. Church officials stressed that no holy books were burned in the fire, as was initially reported by several news sources. Israel Police Spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told Bridges for Peace that they consider this a very serious matter. He said that an investigation is underway and was confident that the perpetrators would be arrested and brought to justice.

Mordechay Lewy, Adviser to the Mayor for Religious Communities in Jerusalem, said on Thursday, "The mayor [Uri Lupolianski] is outraged, and we hope that this will not happen again. What we should do is to increase the notion of being together here, so many communities which we have to coexist and live together, unharmed, undamaged, everyone according to his own faith." The damage in this attack is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of shekels. Several volunteers began cleaning the church sanctuary on Thursday, and the Baptist Village in Petach Tikva sent chairs to replace the more than 60 that were damaged or totally consumed by the fire. (Bridges for Peace)

· Praise God that this attack did not cause loss of life. Praise God for His protection. Pray that attacks of this nature will not escalate in Jerusalem.

· "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 'May they prosper who love you.'" (Psalm 122:6)

This Week, Worship Our Lord As . . .

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) has unveiled his tax reform plan, saying it will "fix" the Alternative Minimum Tax and provide tax relief to millions of Americans, but House Republicans say the bill is the "mother of all tax hikes" and will stymie economic growth.

· Heavenly Father, only You know if this "fix" for the Alternative Minimun Tax is good or bad. We ask that You grant Your wisdom to these legislators, so that creative ways can be found to CUT THE BUDGET rather than to increase it. Show those who are voting what is right for the people, and may that be accomplished, In Jesus Name, amen.

5. Iran Sanctions Are Meant to Prevent War, Bush Aides Say - Washington Post

In approving far-reaching, new unilateral sanctions against Iran, President Bush signaled yesterday that he intends to pursue a strategy of gradually escalating financial, diplomatic and political pressure on Tehran, aimed not at starting a new war in the Middle East, his advisers said, but at preventing one.

· Offer thanks to the Lord for the wisdom He bestows upon President Bush in dealing with Iran. Ask our God to strengthen the hands of our president, as he continues to confront this dangerous and deadly enemy.

6. Putin Warns Against More Iran Sanctions - AP

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned strongly Thursday against imposing new international sanctions on Iran, in words that appeared to be a response to newly announced U.S. measures to punish Tehran.

· The Russian president clearly has an agenda which may not be in the best interests of our own nation. Take authority over every lying and deceiving spirit that may be influencing the president of that great nation, taking every thought captive to obedience to Christ. Our God reigns!

Harry Potter in the News

Massachusetts Pastor Orders Harry Potter Books Removed From Catholic School

A Catholic pastor at a Massachusetts parochial school has made all the Harry Potter books there disappear, saying they are spiritually dangerous for children and could encourage them to engage in witchcraft. The Rev. Ron Barker of St. Joseph's School in Wakefield, Mass., said he stripped the library there of the fantasy series by British author J.K. Rowling in the last month after discovering the novels were among the 10,000 volumes on the shelves. "This is a parochial school and I have the moral authority to do this," he said in an interview with FOXNews.com. "For some people, reading those books is a vehicle to become involved in the occult. My basic premise is for the spiritual protection of the children." (Fox News)

· Thank you, Lord, for the courage of this Pastor. We ask Your protection over him and over his position as he stands against true demonic forces. We pray that other school authorities would follow suit -- especially in this time of the year.

· "And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them; he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him." (Psalm 37:40)

School Violence in the News

4 Students Shot at Middle School Football Game

Gunfire erupted during halftime at a middle school football game on Wednesday afternoon, wounding two teenagers and two adults, police said. The injured teenagers were not students at South Middle School, in Saginaw, Michigan, where the shootings took place about 5:15 p.m. The other victims were an adult male and an adult female, Vanderhaar said. He declined to provide more details.

About 100 people were attending the game when the shooting erupted a short distance from the school's football field, where the team was playing Central Middle School, Vanderhaar said.

Safiya Mosley, a Saginaw Public Schools spokeswoman, said players and spectators were moved toward the center of the football field immediately after the shootings. They were allowed to leave after police indicated the situation was under control. (AP, Fox News)

Students Strap on Empty Gun Holsters to protest Gun Restrictions on Campus

College students across the country have been strapping empty holsters around their waists this week to protest laws that prohibit concealed weapons on campus, citing concerns over campus shootings.

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, a group of college students, parents and citizens who organized after the deadly shootings at Virginia Tech University in April, launched the protest.

"People who would otherwise be able to defend themselves are left defenseless when on campus," said Ethan Bratt, a graduate student wearing an empty holster this week on the campus of Seattle Pacific University. (Fox News)

· Father we take authority over and bind the spirits of fear and anger that have invaded schools across America. We ask that You move on the hearts of students and parents alike to bring peace. Give us all rational thoughts led by Your Spirit of wisdom, and may Your Spirit blow across every campus from elementary schools to universities to bring revival and change.

· "For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)
